An experiment on the electroproduction of multi-hadron final states

1995

Abstract Electroproduction of final states including protons and pions was measured on 12C in close to 4π geometry using a BGO crystal ball at the 3-spectrometer facility at MAMI. The energy transfer regime studied at three incident electron energies ranged from the quasielastic proton knockout to the quasifree Δ excitation region. The 3-momentum of the virtual photon ranged from about 400 to 800 MeV/c. The performance of the experimental setup is discribed and missing energy distributions of the reactions 12C(e,e′p) and 12C(e,e′pp) are presented.

Sphingomyelin inhibition of Ciona intestinalis (Tunicata) cytotoxic hemocytes assayed against sheep erythrocytes

1995

Hemocytes from the ascidian, Ciona intestinalis, are capable of lysing erythrocytes in vitro following cell membrane contact. With the aim of examining the mechanism of cytotoxicity, we performed inhibition experiments with lipid components of erythrocyte membranes. Cholesterol is not an inhibitor, whereas, among the phospholipids tested, (sphingomyelin, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylethanolamine) sphingomyelin inhibits the hemolytic activity of hemocytes. However, thin layer chromatography showed that sphingomyelinase activity was not contained in the chloroform-methanol extracts from hemocyte debris. The inhibition capacity of the components ceramide and phosphorylc…

Two-dimensional echocardiographic evaluation of left ventricular ejection fraction by the ellipsoid single-plane algorithm: a reliable method for ass…

1995

The reliability of two-dimensional (2D) echocardiographic estimation of left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) is commonly recognized, but no satisfactory data are available about the accuracy of low or very low EF values determined by 2D echocardiography (ECHO-EF). The purpose of our study was to assess the reliability of low ECHO-EF values obtained using a simple time-economical algorithm such as the ellipsoid single-plane area-length method. Radionuclide angiography (RAD-EF) was taken as the standard of comparison. We studied 59 consecutive patients (31 women and 28 men) referred to our echocardiographic laboratory. Both 2D echocardiography and radionuclide angiography were blindly perf…

Algebraic Quantization, Good Operators and Fractional Quantum Numbers

1995

The problems arising when quantizing systems with periodic boundary conditions are analysed, in an algebraic (group-) quantization scheme, and the ``failure" of the Ehrenfest theorem is clarified in terms of the already defined notion of {\it good} (and {\it bad}) operators. The analysis of ``constrained" Heisenberg-Weyl groups according to this quantization scheme reveals the possibility for new quantum (fractional) numbers extending those allowed for Chern classes in traditional Geometric Quantization. This study is illustrated with the examples of the free particle on the circumference and the charged particle in a homogeneous magnetic field on the torus, both examples featuring ``anomal…

On the intrinsic complexity of learning

1995

A new view of learning is presented. The basis of this view is a natural notion of reduction. We prove completeness and relative difficulty results. An infinite hierarchy of intrinsically more and more difficult to learn concepts is presented. Our results indicate that the complexity notion captured by our new notion of reduction differs dramatically from the traditional studies of the complexity of the algorithms performing learning tasks.

Two-Dimensional Assembly Formation of Hydrophobic Helical Peptides at the Air/Water Interface: Fluorescence Microscopic Study

1995

Monolayer formation of hydrophobic α-helical peptides, X-(Ala-Aib) 8 -Y (X=Boc-, HOOCCH 2 CH 2 CO-, biotinyl, biotinyl-(Sar) 3 -; Y=OMe, OBzl, OH), at the air/water interface was studied by the fluorescence microscopic method. Some peptides showed a mound in the π-A isotherm. When the monolayer containing a small amount of FITC-labeled peptide was held at the surface pressure corresponding to the top of the mound, bright and dark domains were observed by fluorescence microscopy. Domain formation was also observed by the addition of a cationic dye (DiIC 1 ) into the subphase underneath the peptide monolayer. The mound in the π-A isotherm is, therefore, ascribed to the phase transition from a…

Production of a cheese model for sensory evaluation of flavour compounds

1995

Summary - A cheese model used to perform sensory evaluation of flavour compounds extracted from various cheese varieties was made with caseins, low heat milk powder, deodorized milk fat, NaCI and renne!. Its composition and physicochemical properties were close to mature hard cheese, apart from a lower dry matter content and sodium concentration, and a higher lactose concentration. Its preparation was established in arder to avoid drainage for at least 24 h, which should allow the incorporation of not only sorne lipophilic substances such as aromas but also some water-soluble substances such as amino acids and peptides. The rheological behaviour of the cheese model measured by a compression…

Heredity and obesity-associated hypertension: impact of hormonal characteristics and left ventricular mass. J Hypertens

1995

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of heredity on obesity-associated hypertension, we evaluated casual and 24-h blood pressure, left ventricular mass and some metabolic and hormonal measurements in normotensive obese subjects. DESIGN: Healthy, normotensive obese subjects (n = 81) with positive or negative family history of hypertension were studied. Both groups were also subdivided according to a positive or a negative family history of obesity. Accordingly, 45 obese subjects had a positive family history of hypertension, 25 of these having a positive (subgroup A) and 20 having a negative family history of obesity (subgroup B). The other 36 obese subjects had a negative family history…

[15] Glutathione and protein kinase C in peripheral nervous tissue

1995

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the Glutathione and Protein Kinase C (PKC) in peripheral nervous tissue. It has long been known that the redox state of thiols in peripheral neural structures might play an important role in electrophysiological function. Former studies suggested that the integrity of certain sulfhydryl groups in nerve fibers would be essential for conduction. This classic work showed data strongly suggesting that the blockade of SH groups resulted in a loss of excitability and a reduction of the resting potential, and proposed for the first time the role of SH groups in the relationship between structure and function in nerve. The histochemical localization of glut…

First Versus Second Order Phase Transitions in the Three-Dimensional Three-State Potts Model in Random Fields

1995

The ordering of three-states Potts ferromagnets on the simple cubic lattice exposed to random fields is investigated by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. Evidence is presented that the transition is second order for intermediate strength of the fields, while it presumably is first order for large field strength. The implications for various theoretical predictions are briefly discussed.

Biometric variability of Hadwenius tursionis (Marchi, 1873) (Digenea, Campulidae) from the intestine of the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus (Mo…

1995

The species discrimination in the family Campulidae is largely based on morphometric characters (absolute measurements and ratios). To assess the variability of this characters we have studied the campulid species Hadwenius tursionis from four Mediterranean bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus from the Western Mediterranean. In H. tursionis most absolute measurements differed significantly across the infrapopulations, showing high coefficients of variation. Only egg dimensions appeared to be fairly conservative. Body ratios were less variable than absolute measurements, but growth patterns did vary significantly between the infrapopulations studied. None of the ratios previously used in r…

Estimating the difference between brightness and surface temperatures for a vegetal canopy

1995

Abstract The difference between the surface temperature T S and the brightness temperature T b , which can be measured with a thermal infrared radiometer, has been calculated for different surface emissivity values and different atmospheric conditions. These calculations show that T s − T b is often significant even for high surface emissivities and that the spectral band in which the measurements are performed is a key factor in the interpretation of T s − T b . In particular, it is not a simple matter to use the characterisation of the whole spectrum atmospheric radiation to derive T s from T b when the measurements are performed in the 8–14 μm atmospheric window.

Modulation of Spatial O2Tension Distribution in Experimental Tumors by Increasing Arterial O2Supply

1995

Tumor oxygenation has been measured polarographically in s.c. implanted DS-sarcomas on the dorsum of the hind foot of male Sprague-Dawley rats. pO2 was determined in all 3 spatial dimensions and 3-dimensional pO2 distributions as well as the mean extent of confluent areas with pO25 mmHg were calculated. Finally, the effect of elevating arterial pO2 (by carbogen breathing) as well as of increasing tumor blood flow (by angiotensin infusion) on the spatial pO2 distribution was analyzed. Depending on the tumor volume, the spatial pO2 distribution is more or less anisotropic. In smaller tumors, areas with physiological pO2 values are found adjacent to large hypoxic areas whereas larger tumors ar…

Application and assessment of IDEF3‐process flow description capture method

1995

The IDEF techniques have been developed in projects sponsored by the US Air Force in order to describe, specify and model manufacturing systems in a structured graphical form. These techniques can be classified in two categories: the “modelling” and the “descriptive” varieties. Compares two IDEF methods (one of the modelling type and one of the descriptive type) in order to represent (model or describe) two different aspects of an industrial organization. The methods compared are IDEF0, function modelling method, and IDEF3, process flow description capture method. Concludes that when considering the sequencing of the activities in process, aiming at highlighting their eventual simultaneity,…

Trapped metal cluster ions

1995

An overview is given of experiments with stored metal cluster ions in a Penning trap system. The setup allows axial injection of clusters produced in an external source and a time-of-flight mass analysis of the reaction products after axial ejection. The system's options include the selection of stored ions, the manipulation of their orbits, addition of reactant and buffer gases and axial optical access for laser spectroscopic studies. As described by various examples, investigations have been made with respect to the development of trapping techniques and the characterization of metal clusters in terms of their physical and chemical properties.

Fracturas de estrés en la infancia

1995

Molecular phylogeny of the Old World representatives of Papaveraceae subfamily Papaveroideae with special emphasis on the genus Meconopsis

1995

The RFLP-analysis of PCR amplified cpDNA fragments of 42 representatives of Papaveraceae subfam. Papaveroideae resulted in six most parsimonious cladograms. The subfamily can be divided into a New World group (Arctomecon, Argentone, Canbya, Romneya and Platystemon) and an Old World group (Meconopsis, Papaver s.l. and Roemeria) containing Stylomecon heterophylla and Papaver californicum as New World taxa. In the Old World group neither Meconopsis nor Papaver are monophyletic. Whereas Meconopsis consists of three clades, Papaver comprises five clades, with Roemeria as sister group to P. sect. Argemonidium and Stylomecon as sister group to P. californicum. Various lines of evidence suggest tha…

1995

Diphenylmethyl cations formed by benzylic cleavage of the molecular ions of ortho heteroalkyl substituted 1,1-diphenylalkanes undergo the double rearrangement process (H to C followed by C to C) previously reported for ortho-methoxy derivatives. Hence the formation of substituted benzyl (or tropylium) ions allowing this double rearrangement process constitutes an interesting type of fragmentation reaction characteristic for 1,1-diphenylalkanes bearing ortho substituents (OMe, OEt, OiPr, SMe, NHMe, NMe2) which are able to transfer a hydride to the charged benzyl carbon of diphenylmethyl cations formed by benzylic cleavage of the molecular ion.
