Tangent Measures, Densities, and Singular Integrals

1995

We introduce tangent measures in the sense of David Preiss. We discuss their applications to the density and rectifiability properties of general Borel measures in ℝ n as well as to the behaviour of certain singular integrals with respect to such measures.

Comparative Studies on Vascular Endothelium in vitro

1995

Endothelial cells (EC) are very responsive to proinflammatory cytokines, e.g. interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha), as well as to bacterial lipopolysaccharide. EC are stimulated by these substances to secrete chemotactic factors and to increase expression of cell adhesion molecules (CAM), leading to dramatically altered interactions with leukocytes, e.g. granulocytes and monocytes. In these interactions E-selectin, ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 are known to play an important role, as they are presented by the EC and interact with corresponding ligands on the white blood cell membranes. These adhesion molecules have been studied worldwide in a variety of in vitro experiments …

The Impact of Climatic Change and Land Use on the Hydrological Response of Mediterranean Soils; a Study along a Climatological Gradient in Crete (Gre…

1995

Abstract To help understand the impact of Climatic Change on the soils of the Mediterranean area, measurements of physical soil properties were carried out in a mountain zone in Crete (Greece), following a climatological gradient. Four experimental slopes were chosen, south facing and situated on limestone lithology. Soil hydrological properties including infiltration, runoff and sediment concentration, were measured and the percentage of waterstable microaggregation in the soil was calculated and used as an indicator of soil degradation. It was found that as well as climate, soil properties were highly affected by the extensive land use of the area, intensive grazing by goats and small sca…

Mictic patterns of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis Müller in small ponds

1995

Populations of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis were monitored in three small ponds in a marsh on the Mediterranean coast. Samples were taken approximately every three weeks from July 1992 to November 1993. Salinity, temperature, conductivity, pH and oxygen concentration were measured in the field. Population density was determined from preserved quantitative samples. Individuals were classified as mictic females, amictic females, non-ovigerous females, and males, differentiating between two morphotypes (‘S’ and ‘L’). From these counts, a level of mixis was calculated. We also determined the proportion of mictic females in natural populations by culturing females isolated from fresh sample…

Uptake of Bead-Adsorbed Versus Soluble Antigen by Bone Marrow Derived Dendritic Cells Triggers Their Activation and Increases Their Antigen Presentat…

1995

The property to internalize particles has for long time been ascribed primarily to macrophages. DC in contrast were considered generally as phagocytosis negative. Fully mature DC which can be isolated from various tissues of the body do indeed not take up particulate material; however immature DC which arise in differentiating bone marrow cultures do exhibit phagocytic capacity1. Consistent with their immature phenotype epidermal Langerhans cells were also described to possess phagocytic potential2.

Occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma and decompensation in western european patients with cirrhosis type B

1995

To examine the morbidity of compensated cirrhosis type B, a cohort of 349 Western European, white patients (86% men; mean age, 44 years) with biopsy-proven cirrhosis was followed up for a mean period of 73 months and was studied for occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and decompensation. At entry into the study all patients were tested for hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg; 34% of patients were HBeAg-positive) and antibody to hepatitis delta virus (anti-HDV; 20% of patients were anti-HDV-positive); 48% of 252 patients tested were hepatitis B virus (HBV)-DNA-positive. During follow-up HCC developed in 32 (9%) of the 349 patients and decompensation was observed in 88 (28%) of 317 tumor-fr…

Measurement of $\Delta^{++}$(1232) production in hadronic Z decays

1995

A measurement of the \Delta^{++}(1232) inclusive production in hadronic decays of the Z at LEP is presented, based on 1.3 million hadronic events collected~ by the DELPHI~ detector in the 1994 LEP running~ period. The DELPHI ring imaging Cherenkov counters are used for identifying hadrons. The average \Delta^{++}(1232) multiplicity per hadronic event is 0.079 \pm 0.015 which is more than a factor of two below the JETSET, HERWIG and UCLA model predictions. It agrees with a recently proposed universal mass dependence of particle production rates in e^{+}e^- annihilations.

Hyperfine structure andg-factor measurements in ion traps

1995

We report about measurements on ground-state hyperfine splitting constants of stable Eu+ isotopes in radio frequency ion traps and experiments on the electronicg-factor of Ba+ in a Penning trap. From the precision of both measurements, which ranges between 3·10−6 and 5·10−7, we conclude that precise determination of the differential Bohr-Weisskopf effect in chains of isotopes will be possible in the near future.

Variability of the African convection centre as viewed by outgoing longwave radiation records and relationships with sea-surface temperature patterns

1995

International audience; The main African convection centre (ACC) is delimited by the 5"-square areas with outgoing longwave radiation less than 235 W m-' in the domain 17.5°N-17.5"S and 18"W-46"E. Four parameters (latitude and longitude of the centre of gravity, mean intensity, and extension) were analysed during the period June 1974 to December 1991. The relationships between the variability of the ACC and the main sea-surface temperature (SST) patterns were then studied. Correlation and composite analyses demonstrate that the first principal component of SST, representing mainly the variability of the eastern and the central tropical Pacific, is associated strongly with the extension and …

Studies on the Correlation of Putrescine and Potassium Contents in the Needles of Spruce Trees

1995

Summary The correlation between the polyamine putrescine and the nutritional element potassium was examined in Picea abies trees at numerous natural stands in Germany. The amounts of potassium and putrescine in needles was analyzed and a linear negative correlation between the K + and putrescine contents was found, which is significant in the bulk of all stands as well as in subsets. The negative correlation becomes even more pronounced when only sites situated over 600 m with trees older than 60 years are included. While former investigations were concerned with experimental conditions of potassium concentrations in soil or nutrient solutions, the data presented here derive from natural ha…

Beiträge zur Bevölkerungsgeschichte und Prosopographie der Kiever Rus' bis zum Tode von Vladimir Monomah

1995

The multinational Kievan Rus' state consisted of East Slavic peoples in the central region, Finno-Ugric tribes in the north, and Turkic tribes in the south. Foreigners also played a decisive role during the formation of the Kievan Rus' state (from the late 9th century onwards). First, the Vikings founded centres, one of which, Kiev, subjugated the others. Then the western, as well as eastern, empires extended their activities to the area. This was followed by contacts with the nomadic tribes of the steppe. In the process the population of Kievan Rus' became multinational. From all known sources (Latin, Greek, Arabic, Slavic, Scandinavian ... ) I have collected the names of every person ment…

Influence of Agents Used for Topical Wound Treatment on Phagocyte Stimulation and Fibroblast Growth

1995

Wound healing has always been a fascinating phenomenon for physicians and surgeons. Wounds usually close by forming new granulation tissue, contracting, and re-epithelializing. Before granulation begins, polymor-phonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and monocytes/macrophages (MCs) are chemotactically attracted to sites of injury. Upon contact with various stimuli in the wound including bioactive lipids, complement components, certain cytokines, e.g., tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) [1], granulocyte/ monocyte-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interferon-γ (IFN-γ), and interleukin-8, and particles such as microorganisms, phagocytes respond by a respiratory burst consisting of a markedly enhanced upt…

Inclusive Pion Double Charge Exchange on Light Nuclei above 0.5 GeV

1995

Inclusive double charge exchange (DCX) reaction A(π −, π +) X on 6Li and 16O was for the first time measured at incident kinetic energy T 0 = 1.1 GeV ( ≈ 5°) for outgoing particle momentum region where additional pion production is kinematically forbidden. The experiment was performed at secondary π − beam of the ITEP proton synchrotron using the 3m magnet spectrometer. The measured double differential cross section at 1.1 GeV together with our previous results at 0.6 and 0.75 GeV [1] and with the lower energy data [2] and [3] shows rather slow decrease with energy. This result is in contradiction with the fast fall of small angle DCX cross section calculated [4] in the standard mechanism o…

Ventura Rodríguez versus Fray Francisco Cabezas, arquitecto valenciano

1995
