Starting with a look at the outstanding role of the hydrogen atom in modern physics, this work reviews aspects of an extension of precision spectroscopy to the ground-state hyperfine structure of highly charged hydrogenic ions. In this connection, the preferences of heavy-ion storage rings are outlined and illuminated by the laser-spectroscopic measurement (the first of that kind) of the 1s hyperfine splitting of 209Bi82+, stored in the heavy-ion storage ring at GSI. The preoperative assessment of stroke risk in lesions involving the internal carotid artery.

Patients with vascular or tumourous lesions involving the internal carotid artery are at risk of damage or occlusion of this vessel during surgical or endovascular procedures. To assess the stroke risk transcranial Doppler aided carotid compression tests were performed in 82 patients. Based on changes of blood flow velocity (BFV), pulsatility index, systolic/diastolic ratio and length of transient hyperaemic response three groups could be differentiated. Patients in group A (31%) showed only a slight reaction of BFV and were at minimal risk in case of carotid occlusion. The quadrupole moment ratio of 9Li and 11Li was measured by a combination of in-beam laser induced nuclear polarization and β-NMR in LiNbO3. The result |Q(11Li)/Q(9Li)| = 1.14(16) is consistent with cluster models describing 11Li as composed of a 9Li core and a far extended halo of two loosely bound neutrons.

Improved comparison of bar P and P charge-to-mass ratios

The measured ratio of charge-to-mass ratios for the antiproton and proton is 1.000 000 001 5 ± 0.000 000 001 1. This 1 part in 109 comparison (1 ppb) is possible because a single or p is now directly observed while trapped in an open access Penning trap. The comparison is the most accurate mass spectrometry of particles with opposite charge and is the most sensitive test of CPT invariance for a baryon system. It is 40 times more accurate than our earlier comparison with many trapped antiprotons and protons, and is more than 45 000 times more accurate than earlier comparisons made with other techniques.

Polybutadienes modified by a small number of 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione form thermoreversible networks via hydrogen bonding between the polar stickers. The molecular dynamics of systems with different contents of polar stickers are investigated by broadband dielectric spectroscopy in the frequency regime of 10−1–109 Hz. Unmodified polybutadiene shows two relaxation processes, the α-relaxation which is correlated to the dynamic glass transition of the polybutadiene, and a β-relaxation corresponding to a local relaxation of polybutadiene segments. Machining Economics in FMS by a Fuzzy Approach

Abstract In a conventional manufacturing system, cutting parameters have to be fixed in order to pursue the economical and productive target related to each cutting operation. In a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS), as a consequence of the unbalanced workload due to the mutual interaction among the shared resources, the optimization of each operation does not allow the optimum of the global production system to be reached. A fuzzy programming model is developed in this paper in order to select cutting speeds of the operations in the production plan as a satisfying compromise solution between single operation and the integrated system targets.

Pressurized flow electrochromatography (PEC) is a hybrid of capillary LC and capillary electroendosmotic chromatography (CEC). Both a pressure gradient and an electric field are applied across a packed capillary. The feasability of a simple, easy to handle PEC instrumentation is demonstrated. The intensities of the Raman transitions were modeled using a dyad scheme for the two interacting bands with a first-order polarizability expansion. The involved polarizability parameter; have been adjusted to fit about 800 measured intensities of transitions reaching upper states up to J = 18. The resulting standard deviation is about 10%. Beta decay of the new isotope101Sn

The very neutron-deficient isotope 101Sn was produced in a 50Cr(58Ni, 2p5n) reaction and its decay properties were determined for the first time. By using chemically selective ion sources of an on-line mass separator, the energy spectrum and the half-life (3 ± 1 s) of beta-delayed protons of 101Sn were measured. These results are compared to theoretical predictions.

Abstract An overview of physics at the Mainz Microtron facility MAMI is given. After a short description of the essential parameters of the accelerator, selected results of three different collaborations A1, A2, and A3, each centered around one major experimental facility, are presented. The A1 collaboration has installed a setup of three large acceptance magnetic spectrometers. Results presented are high momentum components (pm ≤ 700MeV/c) in 16O(e, e′p), L T separation and LT interference structure functions in p(e, e′π+), and angular distribution of p(e, e′p)π0 at π0 threshold. The purpose of this paper is to give a description of one of the Catalan reduplication processes: the reduplication of one light syllable at the left edge of the word. This process exhibits some prosodic conditions in the output as well as in the input. The input must be one heavy syllable, and the output cannot exceed two syllables. Both are subject to Minimality: base words contain minimally one foot, reduplicative words contain maximally one foot. The reduplicative template is a light syllable, its segmental melody being mapped from the base. The description of this process provides evidence for a templatic approach within Prosodic Morphology.
