Chaotic Scattering in the Gaussian Potential

1995

It is well known that general classical Hamiltonian dynamical systems have as a rule chaotic behaviour. By such a term one usually understands a sensitive dependence on initial conditions which manifests itself in the topology of phase space. For the most studied case of bounded motions this behaviour is detected, for example, by analysing the Poincare surfaces of section and by calculating Lyapunov characteristic exponents. The question then naturally arises of what are the effects of this complexity on the unbounded motions, i.e., on scattering phenomena. The signature of chaotic dynamics in these scattering regions of phase space has been the object of several papers appeared mainly in t…

Study of the four-fermion final state at the Z resonance

1995

The process e+e−→, where l is a charged or a neutral lepton and f any charged fermion, is analyzed. The study uses the ALEPH data collected at LEP from 1989 to 1993 at centre-of-mass energies between 88 and 95 GeV, corresponding to almost two million hadronic Z decays and to a total integrated luminosity of 79 pb−1. For all channels, the data agree well with the standard model expectation both in shape and normalization. The indication of an excess in the\(e^ + e^ - \to \tau ^ + \tau ^ - f\bar f\) channel, reported by ALEPH in 1991, is not confirmed.

Light Ion Induced Reactions at Intermediate Energies

1995

We study the light ion induced reactions at intermediate energies theoretically. We show that (3He, t) reactions on unstable nuclei are useful tool to investigate the surface of the unstable nuclei and isospin dependence of the ∆ excitation mechanism in nuclei. We also show that (α, α′) reactions on proton target are interesting since we can observe Roper resonance excited by σ-meson exchange. In both cases we can get interesting results by making use of properties of the light ions.

First-Principles Simulations of Interstitial Atoms in Ionic Solids

1995

The atomic and electronic structure of the radiation-induced interstitial atoms in MgO and KCl crystals representing two broad classes of ionic solids are calculated and compared. The first-principles full potential LMTO method is applied to a 16-atom supercell. For both crystals the energetically most favourable configuration is a dumbbell centered at a regular anion site. Its (110) and (111) orientations are very close in energy which permits the dumbbell to rotate easily on a lattice site. The mechanism and the relevant activation energy for thermally activated diffusion hops from the dumbbell equilibrium position to the cube face and cube center are discussed in the light of the availab…

Generalization of the Lorenz-Haken model to atomic systems with different relaxation rates for the two laser levels

1995

Abstract The fundamental Lorenz-Haken laser model is generalized to the case of a two-level amplifying medium with different external relaxation rates for the two levels and with internal relaxation. This represents one further degree of freedom, and important quantitative differences in the laser dynamics. i.e., in the stationary solutions, linear stability analysis, and timedependent solutions, are found. No significant qualitative differences, however, are observed.

Upper limits on the branching ratios tau-]mu-gamma and tau-]e-gamma

1995

The DELPHI collaboration has searched for lepton flavour violating decays tau -> mugamma and tau -> egamma using a data sample of about 70 pb-1 of integrated luminosity corresponding to 81 000 produced tau+tau- events. No candidates were found for either of the two modes. This yields branching ratio upper limits of B(tau -> egamma) mugamma) < 6.2 × 10-5 at 90% confidence level.

Evaluation of the Fate of Aldicarb and Its Metabolites in Oranges

1995

Abstract The accumulation, persistence and fate of systemic pesticide aldicarb was melencholy evaluated in orange crops. The concentration of this pesticide and its two toxic metabolites, aldicarb sulfoxide and aldicarb sulfone was determined in leaves, rind and pulp of three orange varieties (Satsuma, Navelina and Clemetina de Nules) and in the top soil of the orange groves. The groves were located in two different places in the Valencia Community (Spain). The analysis showed that the aldicarb concentration was lower than those of aldicarb sulfoxide and aldicarb sulfone. In all cases, the residues persisted at least 160 days in vegetable samples and between 157 and 227 days in soil samples…

Measurement of the D∗± cross section in two photon collisions at LEP

1995

Abstract The inclusive production of D ∗± mesons in photon-photon collisions has been measured by the Aleph experiment at LEP with a beam energy of 45 GeV. The D ∗+ are detected in their decay to D 0 π + with the D 0 observed in three separate decay modes: (1) K − π + , (2) K − π + π 0 and (3) K − π + π − π + , and analagously for the D ∗− modes. A total of 33 events was observed from an integrated luminosity of 73 pb −1 which corresponds to a cross section for Σ( e + e − → e + e − D ∗± X ) of 155 ± 33 ± 21 pb. This result is compatible with both the direct production γγ → c c in the Born approximation and with a more complete calculation which includes both radiative QCD corrections and co…

Production of charged particles, K0(s), K+-, p and Lambda in Z --> b anti-b events and in the decay of b hadrons

1995

sample of events enriched in bb̄ quark pairs was selected in the data recorded by the DELPHI experiment at LEP during 1992 and 1993, by the presence of secondary decay vertices from short-lived particles. Using this sample, the average multiplicities of Ks0, K±, p(p̄), Λ(View the MathML source) and of charged particles in bb̄ events have been measured, distinguishing the component from fragmentation and the component coming from the decay of b-hadrons. The measurement of the average charge multiplicity in bb̄ events was used to compute the mean fractional beam energy carried by the primary b-hadron, and the difference in charged particle multiplicity between bb̄ events and light quark (uū, …

Aluminum-27 double-rotation NMR investigations of SAPO-5 with variable silicon content

1995

Summary Double-rotation NMR (DOR) studies of 27 Al species in SAPO-5, a silicon aluminophosphate molecular sieve with a one dimensional channel system, have revealed a minimum of three aluminum sites resulting from the synthesis. The DOR technique was used specifically to increase the spectral resolution by removing the broadening influences from second-order quadrupolar interactions associated with the spin 5/2 27 Al nuclei. The DOR investigations of SAPO-5 crystals with variable Si/Al ratios resulted in the identification of three aluminum species, two consistent with the reported isotropic shift values for AlPO 4 -5; however, these two resonances are only observable when small quantities…

Form Factors for B -> pi l nu-bar_l and B -> K* gamma Decays on the Lattice

1995

We present a unified method for analysing form factors in B --> pi l ($) over bar nu(l) and B --> K*gamma decays. The analysis provides consistency checks on the q(2) and 1/M extrapolations necessary to obtain the physical decay rates. For the first time the q(2) dependence of the form factors is obtained at the B scale. In the B --> pi l ($) over bar nu(l) case, we show that pole fits to f(+) may not be consistent with the q(2) behaviour of f(0), leading to a possible factor of two uncertainty in the decay rate and hence in the value of /V-ub/(2) deduced from it. For B --> K*gamma, from the combined analysis of form factors T-1 and T-2, we find the hadronisation ratio R(K)* of the exclusiv…

Sheet Bending Modelling for AA 5083 Aluminium Alloy

1995

An extensive investigation of the V- and U-die bending processes of AA 5083 aluminium alloy has been performed by means of the finite element method and the experimental tests. The predicted results, in terms of elastic springback and loads, were compared with the experimental ones in similar conditions. At a given punch stroke, the springback ratio K increases with the sheet thickness, and, at a constant sheet thickness, K increases with the punch stroke. The comparison between predicted and experimental K values shows an excellent agreement in all the ranges of punch stroke and sheet thickness investigated. A very good agreement between the predicted bending forces and the experimental on…

Teacher stress and coping over an autumn term in Finland

1995

Abstract Psychological stress, coping process and the relationships between stress and coping were examined among 66 teachers representing comprehensive and upper secondary schools in Finland. The research design was longitudinal. Each person was studied four times during the autumn term of 1991 using questionnaires, which were focused on teachers' stress feelings, ways of coping and social relations to colleagues and pupils during Mondays to Thursdays and Friday morning lessons. The results showed a clear accumulation of stress during the autumn term. Four different teacher groups emerged according to the type of stress reported: (1) teachers who were only moderately stressed, (2) those wh…

Religia i religijność a problemy narodowe i cywilizacyjne na Górnym Śląsku na przełomie XIX i XX wieku

1995

The 19th century, particularly the second half, proved to be of importance to the Silesia of today. A period of rapid industrialization, the introduction of the mechanisms geared towards mass European culture, and the presence of acute political and social problems affecting a highly diversified ethnic population all had a tremendous iniluence on the region. An individual and collective religiousness, presented in professional literature is considered to be the constitutive quality of Silesian culture for both Poles and Germans alike. The formative processes produced reactions ranging from placid to militant opposition. Notable was the religiousness strictly connected with social activism s…

Double-delta production in the gamma-d-]pn-pi(+)pi(-) reaction

1995

We have studied the gamma d ---> Delta++ Delta- reaction which requires the collaboration of the two nucleons in deuteron. By means of a model previously developed for the gamma p ----> p pi+ pi- reaction, the two body exchange currents leading to double delta creation are derived. A fair agreement is obtained with a recent experiment, but more precise measurements and the extension to higher photon energies look advisable in order to see the limits of the present theoretical approach

Mapping discounted and undiscounted Markov Decision Problems onto Hopfield neural networks

1995

This paper presents a framework for mapping the value-iteration and related successive approximation methods for Markov Decision Problems onto Hopfield neural networks, for both discounted and undiscounted versions of the finite state and action spaces. We analyse the asymptotic behaviour of the control sets and we give some estimates on the convergence rate for the value-iteration scheme. We relate the convergence properties on an energy function which represents the key point in mapping Markov Decision Problems onto Hopfield networks. Finally, an application from queueing systems in communication networks is taken into consideration and the results of computer simulation of Hopfield netwo…

Spherulites in Calcrete Laminar Crusts: Biogenic CACO3 Precipitation as a Major Contributor to Crust Formation

1995

ABSTRACT Spherulites (calcitic fibro-radial spherulitic polycrystals) are a major component of calcite layers in Quaternary calcrete laminar crusts. To explain the formation of spherulites, petrographic and chemical studies were performed on Pleistocene calcrete laminar crusts, Holocene biological crusts, and laboratory (in vitro) cultures of cyanobacterial strains. Spherulites were found to be formed of acicular and radiating crystals, either smooth and regular-edged, or twisted and irregular-edged. Spherulites were composed of low-Mg calcite, the concentration of Mg in the spherulites increasing from nucleus to periphery. The shape and chemistry of the in vitro spherulites and laminar cru…
