El expresionismo: de la plástica al cinematógrafo

1995

1995

The majority of works on the history of the Military Order of Montesa are based on classic works referring to the Modern Ages and therefore they assign to the Middle Ages meaningless scherna and organizational outlines. The purpose of this paper is to find out the territorial distribution of the Montesa manors in the Kingdom of Valencia at the time of its foundation, and its changes through the Middle Ages, emphasizing the distribution of powes and competences between the Friars memberships of the Order and the Master, owner of the rights of the “Mesa Maestral". We know that during the XIV and XV Centuries there was a concentration of power in the hands of the Master. With this authority, h…

Les crânes déformés de Saint-Etienne (Beaune, Côte d'Or, Ve-VIe siècles). Données archéologiques et anthropologiques

1995

The sector of the Saint-Étienne necropolis (Beaune), reveals the existence of two clearly separated zones which are characterized by different funeral and cultural practices: tomb architecture, archaeological material and artificially deformed crania. This seems to provide evidence of two distinct groups. A preliminary morpho-metrical study of four skulls and the examination of several CT scans of three of them, allow us to confirm the presence of artificial antero-posterior cranial deformations.

Wpływ wodoru na polimeryzację etylenu wobec katalizatorów Zieglera-Natty

1995

The effects of hydrogen on both degree and rate of polymerization were investigated with the catalytic system (TiCl4 + Et2AlCl) supported on modified alumina. Hydrogen is little active as a chain-terminating agent in the presence of the investigated catalyst. It also lowers the activity of the catalyst due to deactivation of a part of active centres. The influence of hydrogen on the viscosity-average molecular weight was analyzed by Natta's equations and it was found that the chain transfer reaction of polymer took place via molecular and not via atomic hydrogen. The molecular weight control by hydrogen was described by equation (22) using the kinetic model of this polymerization process de…

Sulphur Stored in Forest Soils and the Relative Importance of Organic and Inorganic Forms. Examples from Mont-Lozère (Southern Massif Central)

1995

From studies initiated in 1981, the mean annual hydrochemical budget established in three experiment watersheds at Mont-Lozere demonstrated that sulphur is retained in soils and in arenaceous formations (Lelong et al. 1990). Soils were developed on weathered granite materials that were strongly reworked by periglacial processes. One watershed is covered with grasses (Bassin de la Cloutasse) and the two others by forest. A beech coppice (Fagus sylvatica L.) and a Norway spruce forest (Picea abies (L.) Karst., hereafter shortened to “spruce”) occupy the Bassin de La Sapine (54 ha) and the Bassin of La Latte (20 ha), respectively. Unfortunately, as a result of a parasite attack, a large part o…

Thermal remote sensing of land surface temperature from satellites: Current status and future prospects

1995

Abstract In this paper we review the current status for deriving land surface temperatures (LSTs) by remote sensing from satellites in the thermal infrared. Because of its widespread use and global applicability, we concentrate on the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). The theoretical framework and methodologies used to derive LSTs are reviewed and amplified. Practical algorithms are described and their accuracy and application critically evaluated through sensitivity studies and by inter‐comparison. The important effects of the atmosphere, surface emissivity and instrument noise are considered and the current practice for removing these effects is specified. The accuracy cur…

Xenobiotic metabolizing enzyme activities and viability are well preserved in EDTA-isolated rat liver parenchymal cells after cryopreservation

1995

Rat liver parenchymal cells (PC) were isolated by EDTA perfusion and were purified by a subsequent Percoll centrifugation. The isolated PC had a viability of 95%, as judged by trypan blue exclusion. Freshly isolated PC were cryopreserved with an optimized protocol in a computer-controlled freezer. After thawing, the PC still retained a viability of 89%. The activities of representative xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes were compared between freshly isolated and cryopreserved PC after thawing. The cytochrome P450 content and the cytochrome P450 2C11 isoenzyme activity, determined by hydroxylation of testosterone in intact cells, were not affected by the cryopreservation. The following phase II…

The deficit syndrome in schizophrenic and nonschizophrenic patients: preliminary studies.

1995

One hundred and eighty-seven patients suffering from DSM-III-R schizophrenia, schizoaffective, schizophreniform (psychotic group), unipolar, bipolar and other disorders were interviewed 5 years after discharge. Deficiencies were assessed by means of the Schedule for Deficit Syndrome (SDS) and the Scale for Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS). Binocular thresholds for discomfort to high luminances (TDHL) were assessed in 17 patients with a deficit syndrome. Results suggest that patients with psychotic disorders are in a high-risk group for deficit syndrome. Nevertheless, 9-28% and 9-30% of the 'nonpsychotic' group according to the SANS and the SDS, respectively, showed primary enduring ne…

Measurement of the Effective b quark Fragmentation Function At the Z resonance

1995

Using a sample of about 1.46 million hadronic Z decays collected between 1991 and 1993 with the ALEPH detector at LEP, the energy distribution of the B-0 and B-+/- mesons produced at the Z resonance is measured by reconstructing semileptonic decays B --> l nu(l)D(X) or B --> l nu(l)D*(+)(X). The charmed mesons are reconstructed through the decay modes D-0 --> K(-)pi(+), D-0, --> K(-)pi(+)pi(-)pi(+),D+ --> K(-)pi(+)pi(+), and D*(+) --> D-0 pi(+). The neutrino energy is estimated from the missing energy in the lepton hemisphere. Accounting for B* and B** production, the shape of the scaled energy distribution x(E)((b)) for mesons containing a b quark is compared to the predictions of differen…

El tractament de les formes nominals 'invariables' quant a nombre

1995

The starting claim of this paper is that it is not accidental that in Catalan, as in Spanish, invariable nominals regarding number end in the same form as the regular plural marker, i.e., s, and thus any analysis willing to explain these words has to take this fact into account. Under this assumption, different proposals are evaluated: the existence of a `zero'-plural morph, the blocking of s (plural marker)-insertion, the deletion of s-plural marker, the ambimorphic interpretation of -s+s, the unspecified blocking of one of the two ss, and the deletion of the s-stem. The latter analysis is favoured, except for compounds whose second element is already plural, in which case the ambimorphic …

Advances in the statistical methodology for the selection of image descriptors for visual pattern representation and classification

1995

Recent advances in the statistical methodology for selecting optimal subsets of features (image descriptors) for visual pattern representation and classification are presented. The paper attempts to provide a guideline about which approach to choose with respect to the a priori knowledge of the problem. Two basic approaches are reviewed and the conditions under which they should be used are specified. References to more detailed material about each one of the methods are given and experimental results supporting the main conclusions are briefly outlined.

Health-Related Quality of Life in Old Age: How to Define it, How to Study?

1995

Quality of life, in the words of Alvan R. Feinstein is something like intelligence. “Everyone knows it exists and thinks they can identify it in various ways, but we may not be able to evoke universal agreement on what it is” (Feinstein, 1987, p. 639). This is also true of quality of life when we consider it from a health point of view. The concept itself seems to be perfectly useful, but at the same time there is something very confusing and even irritating about it. What are we talking about when we talk about health-related quality of life? Do we really need this concept if we think of all the countless number of terms and concepts that refer to different dimensions of health-related phe…
