On the occasion of the bicentenary (1795-1995) of the publication oMepart antbe AgraHan Law by Jovellanos, we present a retrospecti…

Quantum Spin-Tunneling:A Path Integral Approach

1995

We investigate the quantum tunneling of a large spin in a crystal field and an external magnetic field. The twofold degeneracy of the corresponding classical ground state is removed due to tunneling. The tunnel splitting ΔE o of the ground state is calculated by use of a path integral formalism. It is shown that coherent spin state path integrals do not yield a reasonable result. However a “bosonlzation” of the spin system yields excellent results in the semiclassical limit. This result follows from the coherent spin state approach from replacing the spin quantum number s by s + 1/2 which causes a renormalization of the preexponential factor of ΔE o .

Spatial Mark-Recapture Method in the Estimation of Crayfish Population Size

1995

The mark-recapture method is considered for estimation of population size of slowly moving animals like crayfish. The Petersen type estimator for closed population is generalized for situations where recaptures are spatially dependent between the capture sites, and its variance approximation is derived using point processes as models for the population. The method of quadratic forms is suggested to be used as variance estimator. Finally, a trapping design is proposed where onc trap at recapture is replaced by four adjacent traps. A simulation experiment is performed to explain the robusticity of the new trapping design against movements of animals.

Inclusive measurements of the K+- and p / anti-p production in hadronic Z0 decays

1995

This analysis, based on a sample of 170000 hadronic Z0 decays, provides a measurement of the K± and p/View the MathML source differential cross sections which is compared to string- and cluster fragmentation models. The total multiplicities for K± and p/View the MathML source per hadronic event were found to be: NK = 2.26 ± 0.18 and Np = 1.07 ± 0.14. The positions ξ* of the maxima of the differential cross sections as a function of ξ = ln(1/xp) for K± and p/View the MathML source were determined to be 2.63 ± 0.07 and 2.96 ± 0.16 respectively. A comparison of the ξ* values for various identified particles measured at LEP with the prediction of the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation wit…

Results from the Real Photon Programme at MAMI

1995

The accelerator MAMI (Mainzer Mikrotron) with its excellent beam properties and its duty factor of 100% allows to apply coincidence techniques in intermediate energy nuclear physics, which has led to a variety of results with high precision. The real photon collaboration (A2) uses energy tagged bremsstrahlung photons with energies up to 800 MeV. We have results on total photon absorption (proton, deuteron, 3He and U), on Compton scattering (proton, 4He and 12C) and on meson production, especially on π°- and η-photoproduction. Double pion production on the proton and the deuteron was measured. The two and three body breakup of 3He was investigated as well as the reactions (γ,NN) and (γ, π ± …

From Theatre to Theatricality—How to Construct Reality

1995

At the end of the nineteenth century, the dominance of language, so typical of Western culture since the Renaissance, was increasingly challenged. As early as 1876, Nietzsche wrote on Richard Wagner in Thoughts Out of Season:He was the first to recognize an evil which is as widespread as civilization itself among men; language is everywhere diseased, and the burden of this terrible disease weighs heavily upon the whole of man's development. Inasmuch as language has retreated ever more and more from its true province— the expression of strong feelings, which it was once able to convey in all their simplicity—and has always had to strain after the practically impossible achievement of communi…

Vulnerability of Mediterranean ecosystems to Climatic Change, study of soil degradation under different climatological conditions in an altitudinal t…

1995

Abstract To investigate the potential response of soils to climatic change, measurements of soil physical and chemical properties were carried out during a year in a mountain zone in Alicante (Spain), along an altitudinal and climatological gradient. Hydrological properties (infiltration runoff and sediment concentration) were measured under winter and summer conditions. Chemical and physical soil properties were analyzed for reference soil profiles along the transect. The erosional response of the soils as well as soil properties like organic matter and CEC are found to be under the direct influence of the climate, and as a result they have to be considered as important factors in the dese…

Effects of Cytokines on the Expression of Cell Adhesion Molecules by Cultured Human Omental Mesothelial Cells

1995

Cultured mesothelial cells (HOMES) are very responsive to the proinflammatory cytokines, interleukin (IL)-1 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). E-selectin, ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 are known to play an important role, because they are presented by diverse cell types, for example endothelial cells (ECs), and interact with co-responding ligands on white blood cell membranes. In this study, the expression of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, E-selectin as well as PECAM-1 on cultured HOMES was studied over 5, 24, 48 and 72 h exposure to IL-1 beta, interferon-gamma and TNF-alpha. In previous studies we have shown that IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha increase the expression of ICAM-1, E-selectin and VCAM-1 on the cytopl…

Renormalization of the effective theory for heavy quarks at small velocity

1995

The slope of the Isgur-Wise function at the normalization point, $\xi^{(1)}(1)$,is one of the basic parameters for the extraction of the $CKM$ matrix element $V_{cb}$ from exclusive semileptonic decay data. A method for measuring this parameter on the lattice is the effective theory for heavy quarks at small velocity $v$. This theory is a variant of the heavy quark effective theory in which the motion of the quark is treated as a perturbation. In this work we study the lattice renormalization of the slow heavy quark effective theory. We show that the renormalization of $\xi^{(1)}(1)$ is not affected by ultraviolet power divergences, implying no need of difficult non-perturbative subtraction…

Organophosphonate utilization by the wild-type strain of Penicillium notatum

1995

We studied the biodegradation of compounds containing phosphorus-to-carbon bonds by using a wild-type strain of Penicillium notatum. The substrate specificity of this strain was studied, and we found that it is able to utilize structurally diverse organophosphonates as sole sources of phosphorus. This ability seems to be inducible, as indicated by the presence of a lag phase during growth. A popular herbicide, glyphosate, inhibited fungal growth, but it was also degraded by the fungus if it was applied in sublethal doses. This indicates that P. notatum may play an important role in biodegradation of organophosphonates. The strain which we used did not metabolize any of the phosphonates whic…

Peroxisomes and Hepatotoxicity

1995

Peroxisomes are ubiquitous organelles of eukaryotic cells and are present in significant amounts in hepatic liver cells. Peroxisomal enzymes contribute to several metabolic pathways including fatty acid, purine and amino acid catabolism or bile acid synthesis. The peroxisomal oxidative reactions produce hydrogen peroxide, mostly degraded by catalase which prevents oxidative stress. Moreover, peroxisomes are involved in arylderivative drug detoxification through its epoxide hydrolase activity.

On the construction of classes of suffix trees for square matrices: Algorithms and applications

1995

Given an n × n TEXT matrix with entries defined over an ordered alphabet σ, we introduce 4n−1 classes of index data structures for TEXT. Those indices are informally the two-dimensional analog of the suffix tree of a string [15], allowing on-line searches and statistics to be performed on TEXT. We provide one simple algorithm that efficiently builds any chosen index in those classes in O(n2 log n) worst case time using O(n2) space. The algorithm can be modified to require optimal O(n2) expected time for bounded σ.

Genetic Heterogeneity and Phenotype Variation of Schizophrenia

1995

It is well proven that the manifestation of schizophrenia is under genetic control (Kendler and Diehl 1993). It is however less clear: 1. How relevant environmental factors are, and how they operate and interact with genetic factors. 2. If the genetic susceptibility is identical across the total population of schizophrenics (or at least across all subjects with familial schizophrenia), or if the specific genetic components vary across families. 3. What is transmitted in families of schizophrenics and how co-familial traits are related to genetic and genetic risk factors; are only disorders and symptoms that belong to the schizophrenic sepctrum transmitted or are neurophysiological, neuropsy…

Fibrosis glútea: ¿esencial o secundaria?

1995

Three patients affected with gluteal fibrosis are colected by the a…
