Isolation of endothelin A receptor from bovine lungs.

We isolated endothelin receptor A (ET A ) from bovine lungs in a single-step purification procedure using antibodies raised against synthetic peptides that correspond to extra- and intracellular domains of the rat bradykinin receptor. Two receptor species of 55 and 35 kDa were isolated and subjected to N-terminal microsequencing. The difference between the observed and expected molecular weight species suggests that bovine ET A receptor is glycosylated.

La pseudoartrosis del cóndilo humeral en niños es una complicación que ocurre con una frecuencia del 14% a pesar de un tratamiento adecuado de la fractura. El presente estudio evalúa dos casos de pseudoartrosis del cóndilo humeral en fracturas tipo I y II de Milch en dos niños de 12 y 7 años respectivamente. En la fractura tipo I el tratamiento realizado consistió en osteosíntesis a compresión interponiendo un injerto de ala ilíaca en el foco. La consolidación y desaparición de la sintomatología se obtuvo a los tres meses. A description is given of the K-matrix formalism. The formalism, which is normally applied to two-body scattering processes, is generalized to production of two-body channels with finalstate interactions. A multi-channel treatment of production of resonances has been worked out in the P-vector approach of Aitchison. An alternative approach, derived from the P-vector, gives the production amplitude as a product of the T-matrix for a two-body system and a vector Q specifying its production. This formulation, called Q-vector approach here, has also been worked out. Examples of practical importance are given.

Abstract The statistical mechanics of phase transitions is briefly reviewed, with an emphasis on surfaces. Flat surfaces of crystals may act as a substrate for adsorption of two-dimensional (d=2) monolayers and multilayers, offering thus the possibility to study phase transitions in restricted dimensionality. Critical phenomena for special universality classes can thus be investigated which have no counterpart in d=3. Transcranial Doppler and Cortical Microcirculation at Increased Intracranial Pressure and during the Cushing Response

The effect of increased intracranial pressure on the flow velocity of the basilar artery was measured with transcranial ultrasonic Doppler in New Zealand White rabbits under alpha-chloralose anesthesia and artificial respiration. Laser Doppler flowmetry served to study changes of the cortical microcirculation. The results confirm a high inverse correlation of the diastolic flow velocity, the pulsatility index, and the resistance index with the cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP). During acute intracranial hypertension, however, these parameters do not show a good correlation with the local cortical blood flow. The study was a replication of DeGenova’s (1992) study, aiming at identifying what elderly people would do differently if they had their life to live over. The Ss were 174 retired women (56%) and men (44%) born in 1927 or 1929, residing in urban areas. The subjects completed a questionnaire, Life Revision Index (LRI), developed by DeGenova (1992), assessing life revision in the areas of friends, family, work, education, leisure, religion, and health. The results show that education and leisure enjoyment are the areas with the greatest amount of desired change. The determination of trimethoprim in the presence of dyphylline, proxyphylline, theophylline and caffeine by the linear absorbances method is described. Collinear couples of wavelengths, for the interfering dyphylline-proxyphylline-theophylline-caffeine system (in H2SO4, 0.05 mol/L), are provided in order to allow the determination of the analyte in the presence of these interfering substances.

Epidemiology of retinitis pigmentosa in the valencian community (Spain)

The purposes of this study are to determine the frequencies of the different genetic forms of retinitis pigmentosa and to perform segregation analysis in the different genetic subtypes. Retinitis pigmentosa was diagnosed in 263 persons from 132 families. The frequency of the autosomal recessive type was the highest (31.8%) while the X-linked type was very rare (1.5%). The frequency of autosomal dominant type was 14.4% and the simplex cases constituted half of the total cases of RP registered in our community. Development of new centrifuges for fast solvent extraction of transactinide elements

The H-0.3 liquid-liquid centrifuge applied for rapid and efficient separation of two liquid phases, and the HG-0.1 gas-liquid centrifuge used to separate the gas phase stemming from a gas jet transportation system and the liquid phase, have been further improved. New centrifuges have been produced of PEEK, a plastic material, which makes them resistant to most aqueous and organic solutions. The performance with respect to time behavior and phase purity is comparable to the titanium centrifuges used so far. The H-0.3 centrifuge has been applied to solvent extraction studies of Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, W and Pa from HF solutions into tri-n-octylamine.

El Sarcoma de Ewing representa del 10 al 15% de los tumores óseos malignos primarios y es el segundo en frecuencia en la edad pediátrica. Hasta la introducción de la quimioterapia adyuvante en los años 60, la supervivencia era inferior al 10%. En la actualidad se administra en todos los casos poliquimioterapia utilizando como fármacos esenciales: ciclofosfamida, ifosfamida, etoposido, vincristina, doxorrubicina y actinomicina D, con lo que la supervivencia se ha elevado hasta el 70% de los casos. Abstract The FIA-spectrofluorimetric determination of adrenaline was carried out by reaction of the drug with manganese dioxide entrapped in a polymeric material in a solid-phase reactor; the oxidized drug was monitored fluorimetrically at 540 nm (Ioxg. 330.0 nm). The calibration graph for adrenaline was linear over the range 0.5 - 20 μg ml−1 with a relative standard deviation of 2.0% (at 5 ug ml−1) and the sample throughput of 65 h−1.
