An effective field theory approach to the QCD corrections to the large-$m_t$ $Zb\bar b$ vertex

Using effective field theory techniques we discuss the QCD corrections to the large-$m_t$ contributions to the process $Z\rightarrow b \bar b$. In particular we obtain the $\a$ correction to the non-universal $\log m_t$ contribution to the $Zb\bar b$ vertex.

Constraints from lepton universality at the z-peak on unified theories

We suggest the use of a universality-breaking observable based on lepton asymmetries as derived from the left-right asymmetry and the $\tau$ polarization at the $Z$ peak, which can efficiently constrain the parameter space of unified theories. The new observable is complementary to the leptonic partial width differences and it depends critically on the chirality of a possible non-universal $Z$-boson coupling to like-flavour leptons. Polyelectrolyte Molecule in an Elongational Flow

The theory describing the stretching of a weakly charged polyelectrolyte molecule by elongational shear flow is developed. It is shown that for a polyelectrolyte immersed in a salt-added solution two critical values of shear flow gradient exist: the lower critical point corresponds to the chain stretching on the scale of superblobs of size equal to the Debye screening length and the upper critical point corresponds to the complete stretching of the chain on the scale of monomer units.

Hippocampal auditory evoked potentials (AEP) were recorded in 10 rabbits when pitch deviant tones occurred in a series of standard tones (oddball situation). In control recordings, deviant tones were presented without intervening standard tones (deviant-alone situation). All AEP deflections observed in the oddball situation were found also in the deviant-alone situation. Thus, it appeared that none of the AEP deflections to deviant tones in the oddball situation was specific to a memory trace of preceding standard tones. The urea cycle takes place in the hepatocyte of ureothelic animals. The conversion of ammonia into urea involves five reactions. The first 2 take place in the matrix of the mitochondria, the last 2 occur in the cytosol. Argininosuccinate synthetase (AS) is the third reaction of the urea cycle. It catalyses the condensation of citrulline and aspartate into arginonosuccinate. We have previously reported that rat AS activity was present in the cytosol and the outer membrane of the mitochondria. Effects of inhibitors of cGMP-dependent protein kinase in atrial heart and aortic smooth muscle from rats

Several activators of cGMP-dependent protein kinase (protein kinase G) such as 8-Br-cGMP reduced force of contraction in rat left atria. Inhibitors of protein kinase G antagonized the negative inotropic effect of 8-Br-cGMP but not of acetylcholine in atria. However, the acetylcholine-induced relaxation in aortic rings was significantly inhibited by protein kinase G inhibition. It is concluded that the reduction by 8-Br-cGMP of force of contraction in atria is related to activation of protein kinase G. In response to acetylcholine, activation of protein kinase G is probably a major step in smooth muscle relaxation but is not involved in the reduction of force of contraction in atria.

Constraints on Coupling Constants through Charged $\Sigma$ Photoproduction

The few available data for the reactions $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{0} \Sigma^{+}$ and $\gamma n \rightarrow K^{+} \Sigma^{-}$ are compared to models developed for the processes $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+} \Sigma^{0}$ and $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+} \Lambda$. It is found that some of these phenomenological models overpredict the measurements by up to a factor of 100. Fitting the data for all of these reactions leads to drastically reduced Born coupling constants.

Novel Scalar Boson Decays in SUSY with Broken R-Parity

R parity violation can induce mixing of the supersymmetric Higgs bosons with the sneutrinos at the tree level. We study the effect of this mixing on the decays of Higgs scalars as well as sneutrinos in an effective model where the violation of R parity is included in the minimal supersymmetric model through bilinear lepton number violating superpotential terms. We show that a small violation of R parity can lead to a sizeable branching ratio for the supersymmetric Higgs boson decay mode $H \to \chi \ell$ (where $\chi$ denotes an electroweak gaugino and $\ell$ is either a tau neutrino or a tau lepton). Abstract Isothermal and isobaric adsorptions of p -xylene and m -xylene on NaY, KY, and BaY are studied by thermogravimetry between 25°C and 400°C, and 10 Pa and 1014 Pa. At low filling BaY shows a stronger affinity for xylenes than the other zeolites. At high temperature and low pressure its adsorption capacity is greater than those of NaY and KY. These two zeolites have a similar behavior and adsorb more m -xylene than p -xylene. We have previously suggested that hyperglycemia per se may contribute to diabetic hypertensive and vascular disease by altering cellular ion content. To more directly investigate the potential role of glucose in this process, we measured cytosolic free calcium in primary cultures of vascular smooth muscle cells isolated from Sprague-Dawley rat tail artery before and after incubation with 5 (basal), 10, 15, and 20 mM glucose. Numerical Taxonomy of Aerobic, Gram-negative Bacteria associated with Oysters and Surrounding Seawater of the Mediterranean Coast

Abstract A numerical taxonomic study was performed on 245 strains of heterotrophic, aerobic, marine bacteria, plus 26 reference strains. The isolates were obtained from oysters and seawater sampled monthly over one year, by direct plating on Marine Agar. The strains were characterised by 93 morphological, biochemical, physiological and nutritional tests. Clustering yielded 46 phena at 0.60 S level (S J coefficient). Some could be identified as species of Alteromonas, Shewanella, Deleya, Flavobacterium, Oceanospirillum, Pseudomonas and marine Agrobacterium -like organisms, others were unidentified groups. Several phena seem to correspond to as yet undescribed taxa.

Abstract Leaves from 145-year-old and 44-year-old beech trees were harvested during 1991-1993. Chlorophyll (Chl) and redox components of the thylakoid membrane, including P-700, cytochrome f (Cyt f) and D1 protein, were determined with the following results. Chl a + b, P-700 and Cyt f per unit of fresh weight (FW), dry weight (DW) and leaf area (LA) increase significantly during leaf development. This can be attributed to a massive membrane syn­thesis and new thylakoid formation in the cells. The aim of the present study was to explore possible prejunctional effects mediated by impulse activity of sympathetic terminals on evoked acetylcholine release in an organ innervated by the autonomic ground plexus. Rabbit atria were isolated with the extrinsic right vagus and sympathetic nerves intact and perfused with Tyrode solution. Acetylcholine overflow was determined after labelling of the transmitter stores with [14C]choline and fractionation of the radioactivity on cation exchange columns. The capability of the path-integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) method to describe thermodynamic and structural properties of solids at low temperatures is studied in detail, considering the noble-gas crystals as examples. In order to reduce the systematic limitations due to finite Trotter number and finite particle number we propose a combined Trotter and finite-size scaling. As a special application of the PIMC method we investigate $^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$ at constant volume and in the harmonic approximation. The heat shock response of Chironomus polytene chromosomes was reexamined. The in vivo effects of heat shock on chromosomal [3H]uridine labeling, RNA polymerase II distribution and ribonucleoprotein (RNP) formation were investigated. One primary result is a clarification of the number and location of chromosomal sites strongly induced by treatment at 37 degrees C for 60 min. Mechanisms of ligand binding by monoclonal anti-coproporphyrin antibodies are studied by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy by use of a picosecond laser system. The antibodies quench the coproporphyrin (CP) fluorescence, but the CP fluorescence spectra show a strong shift of maxima at high concentrations of antibodies (Ab) or their Fab fragment. This can be explained by a special type of Ab or Fab dimerization. Fluorescence decays of CP are measured at different concentrations of Ab and different pH values.
