Potential hazards are inadequate alveolar ventilation and inflation of the stomach with air, leading to subsequent regurgitation and aspiration. Shift and scale-invariant correlator using a radially stretched phase-only filter

A radial stretching of the phase only filter depending on the energy angular distribution of the target spectrum is used to perform shift and scale invariant pattern recognition. The complex conjugate of a basic size target Fourier transform and the cumulative energy angular distribution are calculated. Then the radially stretched filter providing the same energy contribution to the correlation peak independent on the target size is prepared and used in a conventional correlator, with spherical-wave illumination. The maximum scale ratio of recognizable objects equals 1:1.5. Computer simulations and experimental results, showing the performance of the filter are presented.

Beyond the standard model with effective lagrangians

We discuss some applications of the effective quantum field theory to the description of the physics beyond the Standard Model. We consider two different examples. In the first one we derive, at the one-loop level, an effective lagrangian for an extension of the Standard Model with a charged scalar singlet by ``integrating out'' the heavy scalar. In the second example we illustrate the use of general effective theories at the loop level.

Cardiomyopathic lentiginosis: an echo-Doppler report

We report a case of a 64-year-old woman with cardiomyopathic lentiginosis. All the echocardiographic features of a hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy were detected, with an accurate noninvasive measure of the left ventricle outflow gradient.

Non-decoupling of Heavy Neutrinos and Lepton Flavour Violation

We consider a class of models predicting new heavy neutral fermionic states, whose mixing with the light neutrinos can be naturally significant and produce observable effects below the threshold for their production. We update the indirect limits on the flavour non-diagonal mixing parameters that can be derived from unitarity, and show that significant rates are in general expected for one-loop-induced rare processes due to the exchange of virtual heavy neutrinos, involving the violation of the muon and electron lepton numbers. DNA single strand break analysis in mononuclear blood cells of petrol pump attendants

DNA single strand breaks, including DNA adducts that lead to alkali-labile sites, were measured in peripheral mononuclear blood cells of 35 petrol pump attendants by alkaline filter elution. Blood samples from petrol pump attendants were taken on Monday and Friday. Additionally, DNA single strand breaks of smoking and non-smoking control persons were examined. For the smoking (n = 12) and the non-smoking controls (n = 20) a mean normalized elution rate of 1.49 +/- 0.52 (mean value +/- 95% confidence interval) and 1.32 +/- 0.28, respectively, was obtained. This study investigates whether a disturbance of extraintestinal autonomic function occurs. Evidence that water transmits Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 infections to eels

Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 is classically considered an obligate eel pathogen. However, it has recently been associated with one human septicemic case. In this paper, the opportunistic behavior of this pathogen is discussed. The bacterium can survive alone in brackish water or attached to eel surfaces for at least 14 days. It is able to spread through water and infect healthy eels by using skin as a portal of entry. These results suggest that water and infected eels may act as reservoirs of infection. Structure function as a tool in AE and Dst time series analysis

A new method to analyse the structure function (SF) has been constructed and used in the analysis of the AE time series for the years 1978-85 and Dst time series for 1957-84. It is shown that this SF analysis makes a clear distinction between affine and periodicity dominated time series, and it displays the essential periodicities of the series in a range relevant to its characteristic time scale. The AE time series is found to be affine such that the scaling exponent changes at a time scale of 113 (±9) minutes. On the other hand, in the SF function analysis, the Dst data are dominated by the 24-hour and 27-day periods. The 27-day period is modulated by the annual variation.

Early-onset ataxia with cardiomyopathy and retained tendon reflexes maps to the friedreich's ataxia locus on chromosome 9q

Absence of lower limb tendon reflexes has been considered an essential diagnostic criterion for Friedreich's ataxia (FA). However, preservation of knee and ankle jerks has been reported in a few patients. Linkage analysis to FA locus (FRDA) on chromosome 9q13-21.1 was performed in 11 patients from 6 families with FA phenotype, including cardiomyopathy, but retained reflexes (FARR). A maximal lod score of 3.38 at recombination fraction theta equal to 0.00 was obtained demonstrating that FARR maps to the FRDA locus. These results suggest that FARR is a variant phenotype of FA.

Abstract This paper deals with experimental and theoretical investigations on the compatibility of binary of polymer blends in solution. The experimental phase boundary of a crystalline polymer such as poly(vinylidene fluoride) with polystyrene (an amorphous polymer) in dimethylformamide as solvent has been determined by size-exclusion chromatography at 25°C. Benzimidazolones and renzapride facilitate acetylcholine release from guinea-pig myenteric plexus via 5-HT4 receptors

The effects of the 5-HT4 receptor agonists BIMU 8, BIMU 1, renzapride and of the 5-HT1p receptor agonist 5-hydroxyindalpine on basal and electrically evoked outflow of tritium were studied in guinea-pig longitudinal muscle myenteric plexus preparations preincubated with [3H]choline. Muscle contractions were recorded simultaneously. BIMU 8 caused a calcium dependent and tetrodotoxin sensitive increase in basal [3H]outflow that was assumed to represent release of [3H]acetylcholine. Level scheme ofZr101and structure of theN=61 Sr, Zr, and Mo isotones

The neutron-rich nucleus $_{40}^{101}\mathrm{Zr}_{61}$ has been studied at the isotope separator ISOLDE via the \ensuremath{\beta} decay of $^{101}\mathrm{Y}$. A detailed level scheme has been obtained from \ensuremath{\gamma}-ray singles, \ensuremath{\gamma}-\ensuremath{\gamma}-t and \ensuremath{\beta}-\ensuremath{\gamma}-t coincidence measurements. The level structure of $^{101}\mathrm{Zr}$ is similar to that of its isotone $^{103}\mathrm{Mo}$ showing that, in contrast to their Sr neighbors, the Zr isotopes do not reach maximum of deformation immediately at its onset. Search for CP violation in the decay Z → τ+τ−

Data collected by ALEPH in the years 1990, 1991 and 1992 have been used to update a previous search for CP violation in the decay of the Z into tau(+)tau(-). The measurement of the weak dipole form factor of the tau lepton has been performed by studying correlations between the tau leptons. No signal of CP violation was found. The weak dipole form factor is found to be ($) over tilde d(tau) = (+0.15 +/- 0.58(stat) +/- 0.38(sys)) 10(-17)e . cm, obtained with 19628 identified tau(+)tau(-) events. This gives an upper limit on the weak dipole form factor of j\($) over tilde d(tau)\ < 1.5 . 10(-17)e . cm at the 95% confidence level.

Experimental data are presented concerning a large transient viscosity surge occurring in the course of spinodal demixing of agarose aqueous solutions. The study includes the effects of water perturbation by minor proportions of compatible cosolutes. Three observations are noteworthy. Quadrupole excitation of stored ion motion at the true cyclotron frequency

Abstract The motion of an ion in a Penning trap has been investigated in the presence of an azimuthal quadrupole radio frequency field and a damping force provided by buffer gas collisions. Analytical expressions are derived which describe the line shape of the cyclotron resonance as well as the properties of the mass-selective cooling mechanism for heavy ions. Excellent agreement is observed between theoretical results and experimental data obtained with the tandem Penning trap mass spectromer ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE (CERN).

The value of morphological investigations of airway mucosa should be compared to a functional method when estimating the toxicity of airborne pollutants. In 34 guinea pig tracheas, mucociliary activity was measured using a modified light beam reflex method before and following exposure to sulfur dioxide for 30 minutes in concentrations ranging between 7.5 and 37.5 mg/m3. Exposure to air served as a control. Simultaneously, specimens were taken for light and electron microscopy. Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) offer an alternative to transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) as an audiological test. The former can be used as a screening technique, and may also provide frequency-specific information about the functional state of the cochlea. We recorded DPOAE in a group of healthy newborns to establish the Characteristics of a DPOAE “audiogram” (DP-gram) in this population.
