The toxic and teratogenic effects caused by the highly biologically active (all-E)-retinoic acid and its derivatives prompted us to synthesize a number of retinoids. We developed synthetic approaches to (all-E)-retinyl β-D-glucuronide 3, methyl (retinoyl β-D-glucopyranoside)uronate 5, (all-E)-retinoic acid β-D-glucopyranosyl ester 8 and (all-E)-retinoyl β-D-glucuronide 6 in high purity and yield. Compound 3 was synthesized under Koenigs-Knorr conditions from (all-E)-retinol and an α-halogenose. Two ATP molecules are used in the reaction catalyzed by carbamoyl-phosphate synthetase I. One molecule (ATPA) phosphorylates HCO3- and the other (ATPB) phosphorylates carbamate. Carbamoyl-phosphate synthetase I is a 160-kDa polypeptide consisting of a 40-kDa N-terminal moiety and a 120-kDa C-terminal moiety, the latter being composed of two similar halves of molecular mass 60 kDa. Search for supersymmetric particles with R-parity violation in Z decays

Searches for supersymmetric particles produced in e(+)e(-) interactions at the Z peak have been performed under the assumptions that R-parity is not conserved, that the dominant R-parity violating coupling involves only leptonic fields, and that the lifetime of the lightest supersymmetric particle can be neglected. In a data sample collected by the ALEPH detector at LEP up to 1993, and corresponding to almost two million hadronic Z decays, no signal was observed. As a result, supersymmetric particle masses and couplings are at least as well constrained as under the usual assumption of R-parity conservation.

C12(γ,p)11B cross section from 80 to 157 MeV

The $^{12}\mathrm{C}$(\ensuremath{\gamma},p${)}^{11}$B differential cross section has been measured over proton angles ranging from 58\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} to 128\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}, using tagged photons of energy 80--157 MeV, for low-lying regions of residual excitation energy in $^{11}\mathrm{B}$. The data have been compared with four different types of calculation. It is shown that scaling of the cross section with momentum mismatch occurs for both the ground-state and excited-state data.

Familiarization process in cardiorespiratory fitness testing for persons with mental retardation

The purpose of this article is to review the familiarization protocols and other factors used in laboratory and field testing studies implemented to measure the cardiorespiratory fitness of persons with mental retardation. Test selection issues, pretest familiarization procedures, and motivational strategies will be discussed. Little information is available to identify specific guidelines for familiarizing a subject with a specific protocol prior to cardiorespiratory fitness testing. The recommendations suggested in this article provide valuable and necessary information for researchers interested in the measurement of cardiorespiratory fitness of persons with mental retardation.

The effect of external applications of gibberellins (GA3) and abscisic acid (ABA) on the growth, carbohydrate content, and net photosynthesis of heavy metal-stressed rice plants (Oryza sativa cv. Bahia) was investigated. Treatment with cadmium (0.1 mm) and nickel (0.5 mm) inhibited rice growth and stimulated carbohydrate accumulation, especially in seeds from which seedlings were developing, stems, and first leaves. Scaling property of variational perturbation expansion for a general anharmonic oscillator with xp-potential

We prove a powerful scaling property for the extremality condition in the recently developed variational perturbation theory which converts divergent perturbation expansions into exponentially fast convergent ones. The proof is given for the energy eigenvalues of an anharmonic oscillator with an arbitrary $x^p$-potential. The scaling property greatly increases the accuracy of the results.

Role of Octreoscan and Correlation with MR Imaging in Graves' Ophthalmopathy

Since the identification of somatostatin receptors on lymphocytes, orbital infiltration with mononuclear cells in Graves' ophthalmopathy has provided a rationale for receptor imaging with the radiolabeled somatostatin analog Octreotide. In 40 patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy and 10 controls, 110 MBq indium-Octreotide were administered i.v., and scans were performed at 4 and 24 h after injection. An uptake ratio between the orbits and the brain was determined. In the hypothesis of small displacements and combined time-variable/steady loads, the geometrical-mechanical properties of the shakedown load boundary are investigated. The complete cDNA for rat mammary-gland transferrin (Tf) has been sequenced and also the native protein isolated from milk in order to analyse the structure of the main glycan variants present. We report on a family with a severe form of X-linked dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Two brothers, the elder requiring heart transplantation, and a maternal cousin presented elevated creatine kinase levels, increased right ventricular diameters and electrocardiographic abnormalities. All complained of exertional cramping myalgia, but none had muscle weakness or a pathological electromyogram. Muscle biopsies of these individuals revealed a mild myopathic picture with atrophic type I and hypertrophic type II fibers. We have used a conventional model for the $pp \rightarrow pp \pi^{0}$ reaction consisting of the Born term plus the $s$-wave rescattering term. As a novelty we have introduced the off shell dependence of the $\pi N$ $s$-wave isoscalar amplitude. This amplitude is appreciably enhanced when one moves to the off shell situations met in the problem and, as a consequence, the $pp \rightarrow pp \pi^{0}$ cross section becomes considerably larger than with the use of the $\pi N$ on shell amplitudes. In this study we reinvestigate the early development of the freshwater mussel Dreissena polymorpha, previously studied by Meisenheimer (1901). The data include video time-lapse recordings of living embryos and bisbenzimide stains of fixed embryos as well as morphometry on fixed, serially-sectioned embryos. QCD effects and $b$-tagging at LEP I

We analyze the impact of using $b$-tagged samples in studying non-Abelian effects due to QCD in $e^+e^-\ar 4$jet events at $\sqrt s=M_{Z^0}$, using angular variable analyses and comparisons with $e^+e^-\ar 3 \mbox{jet}\gamma$ events. We find that QCD effects are largely enhanced in $b$-quark samples with respect to `unflavoured' ones, where energy-ordering is used to distinguish between gluon and quark jets. We show that the $b$-quark mass influences the angular distributions significantly and should not be neglected

We present an experimental study of inter-Landau-level excitations in undoped GaAs/${\mathrm{Al}}_{\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{Ga}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$As multiple quantum wells in high magnetic fields by means of Raman scattering. Electric-field-induced Raman scattering in GaAs: Franz-Keldysh oscillations

We have studied the influence of strong electric fields on the Raman scattering intensity from LO phonons in GaAs (100) at room temperature using laser excitation energies above the fundamental ${\mathit{E}}_{0}$ gap. Striking oscillations are found in the scattering intensity for configurations where either the deformation potential or Fr\"ohlich electron-phonon interaction contribute. The oscillations in the deformation-potential-mediated scattering intensity can be related to Franz-Keldysh oscillations derived from the ${\mathit{E}}_{0}$ gap, whereas a more complicated mechanism has to be invoked for processes where Fr\"ohlich interaction is responsible.

Stationary problems for equation of the KdV type and dynamical r-matrices

We study a quite general family of dynamical $r$-matrices for an auxiliary loop algebra ${\cal L}({su(2)})$ related to restricted flows for equations of the KdV type. This underlying $r$-matrix structure allows to reconstruct Lax representations and to find variables of separation for a wide set of the integrable natural Hamiltonian systems. As an example, we discuss the Henon-Heiles system and a quartic system of two degrees of freedom in detail.

Abstract In this study, we report the molecular cloning of a novel Drosophila melanogaster small heat-shock (HS)-homologous gene, l(2)efl, identified on the right arm of the second chromosome at locus 59F4,5. We describe the temporal expression of l(2)efl in the wild-type and present its structure. The deduced amino-acid sequence of the Efl protein shows significant homology to all known small HS proteins identified in Drosophila and vertebrates, and to mammalian α-crystallin.
