An optimized mass storage FFT for vector computers
1995
Abstract The performance of a segmented FFT algorithm which allows the out-of-core computation of the Fourier transform of a very large mass storage data array is presented. The code is particularly optimized for vector computers. Tests performed mainly on a CONVEX C210 vector computer showed that, for very long transforms, tuning of the main parameters involved leads to computation speed and global efficiency better than for FFTs performed in-core. The use of tunable parameters allows optimization of the algorithm on machines with different configurations.
High-temperature series expansion for the relaxation times of the two dimensional Ising model
1995
We derive the high temperature series expansions for the two relaxation times of the single spin-flip kinetic Ising model on the square lattice. The series for the linear relaxation time τl is obtained with 20 non-trivial terms, and the analysis yields 2.183±0.005 as the value of the critical exponentΔl, which is equal to the dynamical critical exponentz in the two-dimensional case. For the non-linear relaxation time we obtain 15 non-trivial terms, and the analysis leads to the resultsΔnl = 2.08 ± 0.07. The scaling relationΔl −Δnl = β (β being the exponent of the order parameter) seems to be fulfilled, though the error bars ofΔnl are still quite substantial. In addition, we obtain the serie…
Physical model, theoretical aspects and applications of the flight of a ball in the atmosphere. Part III: Theory in the case of vertical angular freq…
1995
If a ball is viewed as a rigid body, its flight in the atmosphere can be described by six ordinary differential equations, which has been derived in the first part of this paper. In this following third part, some further theoretical aspects in the case of vertical angular frequency will be pointed out using an unknown transformation of the original independent variable, i.e. the time, as indicated in Part II. Last, but not least, the general case of angular frequency is to be treated. A rough qualitative discussion of the solutions is given as well as—if the equations are viewed as a three-dimensional dynamical system—the unique stable equilibrium, which depends on the spin. This equilibri…

The distinct gene expression of the pro-hormone convertases in the rat heart suggests potential substrates
1995
The present study examined the distribution of the pro-hormone convertases PC1, PC2, furin, PACE4 and PC5 in the rat heart. Northern blot analysis of RNA extracted from cardiac tissues showed high levels of furin and PACE4 mRNA in the atria and ventricles, while PC5 mRNA was found to be expressed at high levels in the dorsal aorta. Although undetectable by Northern blot analysis, both PC1 and PC2 mRNA were detected by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry in discrete regions of the intracardiac para-aortic ganglia. In situ hybridization studies also showed that furin mRNA was observed in all cardiac tissues and cells, consistent with the previously reported ubiquitous expression of…
Influence of the focusing effect on XAFS in ReO3, WO3−x and FeF3
1995
Abstract The role of the focusing effect in the formation of X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) is considered for ReO3, non-stoichiometric tungsten oxides WO3−x and FeF3 having the perovskite-type structure. Two cases are mainly discussed: (1) an admixture of rhenium and tungsten L2-edge XAFS in ReO3 and WO3−x crystals to the one above rhenium and tungsten L1-edge and (2) high-order superfocusing effect in Fe0F1Fe2F3Fe4 atomic chain in iron K-edge XAFS of FeF3 which is analysed using an ab initio multiple-scattering approach.
Trienediolates of hexadienoic acids in synthesis. Addition to unsaturated ketones. A convergent approach to the synthesis of retinoic acids
1995
Abstract The regioselectivity of the addition of the lithium trienediolates generated from hexa-2,4dienoic acids 1 and 2 or the dihydropyran-2ones 4 and 5 to unsaturated ketones 6 is studied. Equilibration conditions favour reaction of the trienediolates through their ω carbon, and the ketones according to 1,2- and 1,4-additions. β-Ionone 6a and the aryl-butenone 6b lead to the 1,2-ω-adducts 8 , which undergo a facile acid catalyzed dehydration to retmoic acids 11 . On reaction with the unsaturated ketone 6b or with the aryl ketones 21 , the trimethyldihydropyran-2one S leads to γ-adducts derived from deprotonation of the chain methyl mbstituent along with the 1,4-ω-adducts.
Brain Slow Potentials Reflecting Successful Shooting Performance
1995
Preparatory brain activity from frontal, centro-lateral, and occipital areas were recorded from top-level rifle shooters during shooting performance. The aim of the study was to examine the relation of brain slow potentials to qualitative (rifle holding) and quantitative (hit) aspects of superior shooting performance. For this purpose, a typology of slow potentials (SPs) was developed. The resulting SP types were used for unraveling the associations between the electrocortical activity and behavioral output. The main finding was that frontal positivity was associated with successful performance, but only if the central-right SP was more negative than the central-left one. This finding was e…
Significant correlations between certain spectra of atmospherics and daily periodic activities of Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus L.).
1995
We describe significant correlations between 10 and 28 kHz atmospherics (according to Baumer) and the running activities of ten Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus L.) depending on their circadian rhythm over a 42-day period (August/September 1988).
A rationale for macroeconomic policy coordination: Evidence based on the Spanish peseta
1995
Abstract In the present paper two types of monetary model for the determination of the peseta/DM exchange rate have been specified for the period 1980–1989. One includes the fundamental variables corresponding to the two countries concerned (Germany and Spain) and the other is an aggregate model, where the explanatory variables are the ratios between the fundamentals from the countries inside the ERM of the EMS, and the Spanish fundamentals. The empirical results show that the aggregate model has greater explanatory power, supporting (indirectly) further monetary policy coordination.
Autoantibodies to the islet antigen ICA69 occur in IDDM and in rheumatoid arthritis.
1995
Islet cell antigen (ICA) 69 is a newly-recognized islet cell antigen to which autoantibodies have been observed in prediabetic relatives of patients with insulin-dependent-diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Here we extend the earlier analysis of ICA69 antibodies to patients with recent-onset IDDM and to patients with other immune-mediated diseases. ICA69 antibodies were determined by Western blot using an affinity purified recombinant fusion protein of ICA69 and maltose binding protein. ICA69 antibody quantities were determined as titres using a titration curve of a standard serum as reference. Mean logarithmic ICA69 antibody titres were 3.4 (+/- 1.4) in 99 patients with acute IDDM compared to 2.8 (…

XAFS study of short range order in the heavily disordered MoxW1−wO3 oxides
1995
We have done comparative XAFS analysis on the MoK and WL 3 edges of polycrystalline Mo x W 1-x O 3 solid solutions. It was found that their structures are closely related to corner-shared WO 3 -type for x<0.9 while α-MoO 3 -type structure is present for x≥0.9. The obtained structural parameters for the first shell around metal ions allow to distinguish several structural phase transitions due to the change of composition. A set of subshells within the first shell was found, and they are in good agreement with Raman data
Prejunctional M1 and postjunctional M3 muscarinic receptors in the circular muscle of the guinea-pig ileum.
1995
The effects of subtype-selective muscarinic receptor antagonists on electrically evoked release of acetylcholine and muscle contraction were compared in circular muscle preparations of the guinea-pig ileum. Incubation of the preparation with [3H]choline resulted in the formation of [3H]acetylcholine. Electrical stimulation caused the release of [3H]acetylcholine which was abolished by tetrodotoxin and omission of calcium from the medium. 5-Hydroxytryptamine (10 microM) and the nicotinic agonist 1,1-dimethyl-4-phenyl-piperazinium (300 microM) did not change acetylcholine release. The muscarinic antagonists pirenzepine (M1 selective), AF-DX 116 (M2 selective) and hexahydrosiladifenidol (M3 se…

Multi-nucleon mechanism for subthreshold antiproton production in proton-nucleus reactions
1995
We study a many-body (multipion) mechanism for ¯p subthreshold production in proton-nucleus collisions. The incoming proton and the interacting nucleons in the target act as sources of pions that merge to produce a nucleon-antiproton pair. The calculation takes fully into account the initial state interaction and antiproton absorption in the final state. The cooperation of several nucleons in the initial state reduces the threshold for the reaction allowing for production rates that may account for 15–50% of the total ¯p production. We point out that this contribution should be added to the primary ¯p production mechanism due toΔ formation and rescattering, as found by other groups, and sho…
Determination of the branching ratiosΓ(K L→3π0)/Γ(K L→π+ - 0) andΓ(K L→3π0)/Γ(K L→πev)
1995
Improved branching ratios were measured for theKL→3π0 decay in a neutral beam at the CERN SPS with the NA31 detector: $$\Gamma ({\rm K}_L \to 3\pi ^0 )/\Gamma ({\rm K}_L \to \pi ^ + \pi ^ - \pi ^0 ) = 1.611 \pm 0.037$$ and $$\Gamma ({\rm K}_L \to 3\pi ^0 )/\Gamma ({\rm K}_L \to \pi ev) = 0.545 \pm 0.010.$$ From the first number an upper limit for ΔI=5/2 and ΔI=7/2 transitions in neutral kaon decay is derived. Using older results for the Ke3/Kμ3 fraction, the 3π0 branching ratio is found to beΓ(K L →3π0)/Γ tot =(0.211±0.003), about a factor three more precise than from previous experiments.
Identifizierung unbekannter Leichen durch Röntgenbildvergleich
1995
Between 1987 and 1993, 30 unknown bodies were identified by means of pre- and postmortem radiographs at the Forensic Institute in Mainz. Our experience indicates that radiological identification comprises a useful, rapid and cheap method, at least as valuable as dactyloscopy or odontological comparisons. The ages of available radiographs were up to 25 years; the most suitable regions are the skull (11), pelvis and lumbar spine (6), lower femur and knee (5) and distal leg with the ankle joint (5). In respect of the problem of objectifying the probability of identity, possibilities for solutions are shown.

Soil CO2 degassing on Mt Etna (Sicily) during the period 1989?1993: discrimination between climatic and volcanic influences
1995
Wide variations were measured in the diffuse CO2 flux through the soils in three selected areas of Mt Etna between August 1989 and March 1993. Degassing of CO2 from the area of Zafferana Etnea-S. Venerina, on the eastern slope of the volcano, has been determined to be more strongly influenced by meteorological parameters than the other areas. The seasonal component found in the data from this area has been excluded using a filtering algorithm based on the best fitting equation calculated from the correlation between CO2 flux values and those of air temperature. The filtered data appear to have variations temporally coincident with those from the other areas, thus suggesting a common and pro…
p-Chlorophenylalanine treatment depresses the number of synaptic ribbon profiles in the rat pineal gland, but does not abolish their day-night rhythm
1995
It is largely unknown as to how the day/night rhythm of pineal synaptic ribbon number is regulated. Transcriptional events related to the nocturnal formation of new synaptic ribbons occur early in the morning, when pineal serotonin levels begin to increase. The present study was carried out in order to elucidate as to how altered serotonin levels affect the day/night changes in the number of synaptic ribbon profiles. To this end, male Sprague-Dawley rats received a single dose of p-chlorophenylalanine (pCPA, 300 mg/kg body weight, 72 hours before sacrifice), which depresses tryptophan hydroxylase activity and hence pineal serotonin levels. Control animals received saline injections. Experim…
Sedimentology and isotope geochemistry of Carnian deep-water marl/limestone deposits from the Sicani Mountains, Sicily: Environmental implications an…
1995
Abstract The upper Triassic Halobia-bearing marl/limestone deposits from the Sicani Mountains (Sicily) record the sedimentary evolution of the Sicanian Basin through the middle and late Carnian time. Dark marls and interbedded grey calcilutites of Julian age are characterized by abundant pyrite, sparse bioturbation and negative carbonate carbon δ13C values. They accumulated in a basin with dominantly anoxic to dysaerobic bottom waters. Lower Tuvalian dark-grey pyritic marls and calcilutites, which contain carbonate minerals with relatively high Mn contents and widely fluctuating δ13C signatures, were deposited under dysaerobic conditions. Middle and upper Tuvalian cherty limestones show int…
Diel vertical migration by Daphnia longispina in a Spanish lake: Genetic sources of distributional variation
1995
Individuals of many zooplankton species undergo diel vertical migration in which they move toward the surface after sunset and return to deeper waters at dawn. However, even when vertical migration can be clearly demonstrated by mapping the distributions of individuals at noon and midnight, at any given time the population is usually scattered over ‘a broad range of depths. This paper focuses on a major potential source of the variance associated with depth distributions. We have used electrophoretic analysis of isozymes to identify “clones” of Daphnia longispina in a Spanish lake. In September 199 1, two clones constituted 5 5% of the individuals collected at noon and midnight on each oftw…

Market for ideas and reception of physiocracy in Spain: some analytical and historical suggestions
1995
This essay aims to situate the phenomenon of the international spread of the economic ideas of a particular school of thought within the framework of the ‘market for ideas' approach outlined by George Stigler. On the one hand, the paper attempts to amplify the theoretical model of a demand-driven market for ideas, introducing the concepts of public goods, utility, transaction costs and other institutional variables, and on the other this analytical approach is applied to the Spanish market for ideas of the 18th century and its reception of physiocracy, obtaining a new perspective on the spread of ideas of the iconomistes in comparison with the existing literature.

Degradation of passive layers of iron studied by conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy
1995
Integral electron Mossbauer spectroscopy (ICEMS) and additionally some electrochemical methods were used to characterize the passivation process of iron (low carbon steel) in sulfate, sulfate+sulfite (a possible model solution of acid rain) solutions and in phosphate buffer. The phase compositions and thicknesses of the passive layers formed due to the electrochemical polarizations were analyzed in dependence on the duration of the anodic passivations and on the pH of the used electrolytes. The passive layer, as determined from the Mossbauer spectra, consists mainly of γ-FeOOH, however in sulfite confining sulfate aqueous solution at pH 3.5 Fe 3 C and despite ex-situ circumstances FeSO 4 .H…
Torrential precipitations on the Spanish east coast: The role of the Mediterranean sea surface temperature
1995
Abstract Floods constitute one of the most important natural risks on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Although it is very difficult to avoid them, a correct understanding of their principal cause, which is torrential rain, can facilitate their prediction and in this way avoid, at least partially, their catastrophic effects (both loss of human lives and material damage). The work presented here is part of a more extensive study underway in the CEAM (Centro de Estudios Ambientales del Mediterraneo). Its objective is the analysis of the conditions that produce torrential precipitations. These can be explained by the hypothesis of the Back Door Front, a mechanism which on its own permits the d…
Correlation of pharmacological properties of a group of beta-blocker agents by molecular topology.
1995
Abstract The molecular connectivity method has been applied to the study of pharmacological properties, among which are found the angor treatment dose, α-distribution half-life and intravenous LD50 in mouse, of a group of β-blocker agents, verifying its application in the prediction of theoretic values for said pharmacological properties. To do this, the obtained multiple regression functions of the corresponding connectivity indices were used in relation with the experimental values of the properties, which are accompanied by the statistical parameters used in their selection criteria, as well as the corresponding random and cross-validation studies of said functions, which corroborate the…
Michel Parameters and tau neutrino Helicity From Decay Correlations In Z->tau+tau-
1995
The Michel parameters and the average tau-neutrino helicity are measured using correlations between the decays of the tau(+) and tau(-) produced on the Z resonance and observed in the ALEPH detector at LEP. The Michel parameters, rho(e), eta(e), xi(e), (delta xi)(e), are determined from tau --> e ($) over bar upsilon(e) upsilon(tau) with e = (e, mu), and the average tau neutrino helicity, (h(upsilon(tau))), from tau --> h tau with h = (pi, rho, a(1)). The results obtained with e-mu universality are: rho(e) = 0.751 +/- 0.039 +/- 0.022, eta(e) = -0.04 +/- 0.15 +/- 0.11, xi(e) = 1.18 +/- 0.15 +/- 0.06, (delta xi)(e) = 0.88 +/- 0.11 +/- 0.07, and the average tau neutrino helicity (h(upsilon(tau…
Studies on pathways of ring opening of benzene in a Fenton system
1995
Ring-opened products of benzene metabolism have been postulated to play a role in hematotoxicity and leukemogenesis. The reaction of benzene in the Fenton system was reexamined to determine the presence of compounds which might serve as intermediates in the formation of trans, trans-muconaldehyde (MUC), a microsomal hematotoxic metabolite of benzene. Benzene dihydrodiol (DHD) was found in this system based on coelution with authentic standard, ultraviolet (UV) absorption characteristics, and molecular weight. Incubation of DHD in the Fenton system resulted in the formation of phenol (PH), catechol (CAT), and products which reacted with thiobarbituric acid to form chromogens absorbing at 495…
Contribution of vitamin A to the oxidation resistance of human low density lipoproteins.
1995
This study investigated the antioxidant contribution of vitamin A in protecting human low density lipoprotein (LDL) against copper-stimulated oxidation. The presence of small amounts of retinol (0.033 ± 0.012 nmol/mol LDL) and retinyl palmitate (0.036 ± 0.021 nmol/mol LDL) was routinely ascertained in the LDL. A single oral supplementation with 20,000 IU vitamin A caused a two- to three-fold increase of retinol and retinyl palmitate in the LDL isolated 8 h after the supplementation. In comparison to autologous-control LDL, vitamin A-enriched LDL were more resistant to oxidation, as expressed both by a clear delay in the onset of lipid peroxidation and by a reduction of the rate of conjugate…
In situ XAFS study of phase transitions and hydrogen intercalation in WO3-MoO3 system
1995
Abstract The WO 3 -MoO 3 system has several reconstructive and displacive phase transitions which can be induced by temperature and/or by change of stoichiometry or valence state of metal ions under hydrogen intercalation. We have studied in situ the local electronic and structural changes arising in WO 3 -MoO 3 system with hydrogen intercalation and temperature. In situ XAFS measurements at the Mo K and W L 3 edges in H y Mo x W 1− x O 3 compounds, performed at different hydrogen intercalation level and temperatures (from RT to 500°C), allowed us to determine the rearrangement in the first and second coordination shells of Mo and W cations during phase transitions. It was found that hydrog…
