Conventionalism and Law

1995

The defining property of those theories which are usually collected under the label “legal positivism” is the thesis that certain social facts form a sufficient condition for the existence of law and legal systems. The acceptance or rejection of this thesis has important consequences, but there are other issues in legal theory which are of equal importance. Thus, the positivism-antipositivism issue is only one possible way of classifying different theories.

A taylor series model to evaluate the interelemental effects in X-ray fluorescence analysis, applied to the iron-zirconium-diluent system

1995

A semi-empirical model has been developed to quantify the interelemental effects in X-ray fluorescence analysis. The measured X-ray fluorescence intensity has been expressed as a function of the different fluorescence elements composing the sample. this complex function has become an operative function via a Taylor series development. An explication has been given for the significance of the different terms of the series. These terms respond to mathematical functions known as characteristic functions for each chemical system. A parameter (B) has been defined which makes it possible to quantify the influence of the interelemental effect as a function of the analyte concentration (C) and that…

Analogia i canvi morfològic : a propòsit de les formes verbals velaritzades

1995

An important series of verbs of the second conjugation exists in Catalan, characterized by a velar obstruent between the radical and the inflectional affixes. This velar segment, which in modern Catalan acts as an extension of the radical, has a heterogeneous historical origin. In short, in certain cases it stems from the strengthening of the glide of the Latin strong perfects in -UI (where w > gw > g); in others, it is justified by the maintaining of the final consonant of the radical in certain forms of the present in verbs such as dico or stringere (DICO > dic, DICAM > diga ...); in others, finally, it is due to changes of a purely analogical nature. In order to explain the l…

Els aplecs «ts» i «dz» en valencià. Una anàlisi des de la teoria de l'optimitat

1995

This article intends to demonstrate that the final form of the clusters /ts/ and /dz/ in the Valencian dialect depends upon the behaviour of a series of universal principles referring to the syllabic structure. The author assumes that such restrictions are ranked on a language particular basis, according to the postulates of Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky 1993). Then, the outputs for the alveolar clusters will be the result of applying the constraint hierarchy to the set of possible candidates consistent with every input. The different results of the clusters /ts/ and /dz/ in Valencian, and this dialect' s divergences from other Catalan varieties are explained by the differences …

Topological considerations in composing teams of learning machines

1995

Classes of total recursive functions may be identifiable by a team of strategies, but not by a single strategy, in accordance with a certain identification type (EX, FIN, etc.). Qualitative aspects in composing teams are considered. For each W ∉ EX all recursive strategies can be split into several families so that any team identifying W contains strategies from all the families. For W ∉ FIN the possibility of such splitting depends upon W. The relation between these phenomena and “voting” properties for types EX, FIN, etc. is revealed.

Different Permanent-Magnet Structures and their Influence on the Torque of Small DC Motors

1995

The design of permanent-magnet DC micromotors implies solving a number of problems. A few of them belong to all DC micromotors, i.e. size and number of rotor slots, width of air gap, external stator and internal rotor diameter, ratio of length to rotor diameter etc.1. One problem, certainly not the lowest in importance is, however, specific2, i.e. the choice of the most convenient permanent magnet for prescribed specifications of the micromotor. To date the progress in the production of permanent magnets has made it possible to work out different structures of motors and, for each structure, the most suitable permanent magnet for specified applications. Rare-earth permanent magnets and, in …

Differences in mechanical efficiency between power- and endurance-trained athletes while jumping

1995

Mechanical efficiency (ME) of jumping exercises was compared between power-trained (n = 11) and endurance-trained athletes (n = 10) using both a biomechanical and a physiological approach. In drop jumps and in stretch-shortening cycle exercise on a special sledge (sledge jumps), the subjects performed 60 muscle actions from a dropping height of optimum minus 40 cm (O − 40), as well as from dropping heights of optimum (O) and optimum plus 40 cm (O + 40). Thus, they were tested in six different tests which lasted for a total of 3 min for each. The mean ME values in the drop jumps from the lowest dropping height upwards were as follows: 23.8 (SD 5.3)%, 35.5 (SD 10.8)% and 39.2 (SD 6.6)% for th…

Artroplastias y detección de metales en aeropuertos

1995

A series of 15 patients with different configurations of hip and knee arthroplasty were analyzed with a metal arch detector similar to those used in airports. Metal detection was negative in patients having only one implant. In 75% of patients wearing at least two implants, metal detection was positive.…

Molecular Dynamics Computer Simulation of Cooling Rate Effects in a Lennard-Jones Glass

1995

We present the results of a molecular dynamics computer simulation of a binary Lennard-Jones mixture. We simulate a quench of the system from a liquid state at high temperatures to a glass state at zero temperature by coupling the system to a heat bath that has a temperature that decreases linearly (with slope -γ) with time. We investigate how the residual density of the system varies as a function of the cooling rate γ and rationalize our results by means of the dependence of the coordination number of the particles on the cooling rate.

Double Pion Photoproduction on the Proton up to 800 MeV

1995

The total cross sections for the three γp → N ππ reactions have been measured for photon energies from 450 to 800 MeV. The γp → pπ0π0 and γp → nπ+π0 rcross sections have never been measured before while the γp → pπ+π− results are much improved compared to earlier data. These measurements were performed with the large acceptance hadronic detector DAPHNE, at the tagged photon beam facility of MAMI microtron in Mainz.

Population dynamics of oxiclinal species in lake Arcas-2 (Spain)

1995

‘Oxiclinal’ rotifer species show high concentrations just above the oxic-anoxic interface in the hypolimnion of some lakes. The stratification of their populations is best shown by sampling at close depth intervals and quantifying their densities by the Utermohl technique. With this technique we were able to count males which otherwise pass through filters and more accurately count egg production. We evaluated female, male and egg numbers of the two main oxiclinal species of lake Arcas-2: Filinia hofmanni and Anuraeopsis fissa, during two annual cycles (1990–91). F. hofmanni was an exclusive oxiclinal species. It had an exponential growth phase at the onset of stratification giving a distin…

Neuromuscular performance in voluntary bilateral and unilateral contraction and during electrical stimulation in men at different ages.

1995

A group of 33 men divided into three different age groups, M30 years (n = 11), M50 years (n = 12) and M70 years (n = 10) volunteered as subjects for examination of their maximal voluntary isometric bilateral and unilateral forces and force-time curves of the knee extensor muscle group as well as electromyogram activity of the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis and rectus femoris muscles of the right and/or left leg contractions. Electrical stimulation (ES) of 50 Hz was also given by two surface tin electrodes for each subject and each leg separately with the maximal tolerable intensity for recording the isometric force evoked. The maximal force produced by the voluntary isometric unilateral …
