Shakedown optimum design of reinforced concrete framed structures

1994

Structures subjected to variable repeated loads can undergo the shakedown or adaptation phenomenon,-which prevents them from collapse but may cause lack of serviceability, for the plastic deformations developed, although finite, as shakedown occurrence postulates, may exceed some maximum values imposed by external ductility criteria. This paper is devoted to the optimal design of reinforced concrete structures, subjected to variable and repeated loads. For such structures the knowledge of the actual values taken by the plastic deformations, at shakedown occurrence, is a crucial issue. An approximate assessment of such plastic deformations is needed, which is herein provided in the shape of …

Interspecific transgenic analysis of basal versus heat-shock-induced expression of a Drosophila pseudoobscura hsp82-neo fusion gene in D. melanogaster

1994

Drosophila melanogaster transformants containing a D. pseudoobscura hsp82-neo fusion gene were used to examine the relationship between chromosome structure and its variation to transcriptional activation and gene expression. At normal temperatures (25° C) transgenic hsp82-neo was transcribed in diffuse polytene chromosomal bands encoding antibiotic G418-resistance without intensive puff formation. Substantial basal expression of the transgene was observed in all tissues examined: salivary glands, brain, ventral ganglion, foregut, gastric caeca, midgut, imaginal discs, nurse cells and oocytes. In addition, basal hsp82-neo expression occurred throughout embryogenesis. In third-instar larvae …

Gegenüberstellung der Wertigkeit von Angioskopie, Angiographie und Sonographie zur Erfassung pathologischer Gefäßwandprozesse

1994

AIMS The ability of angioscopy, angiography and sonography to evaluate arteriosclerotic vascular lesions were compared to determine if angioscopy is a valuable addition in the diagnostic armamentarium. METHODS An in-vitro study was selected to enable microscopic assessment of the arteries. Angiography was followed by sonography and endoscopy and finally the vessels were evaluated macro- and microscopically. RESULTS The configuration of the vascular stenosis (plaque-shape, semicircular-eccentric, circular-concentric) was more reliably defined with angioscopy as compared to angiography and sonography. Intense calcification of plaque was detected sonographically with a high sensitivity (90%) u…

Freshly isolated mouse 4F7+ splenic dendritic cells process and present exogenous antigens to T cells.

1994

The antibody 4F7 was reported to recognize an epitope expressed on dendritic cells (DC) from various tissues. To study the ability of splenic 4F7+ dendritic cells to process antigen for presentation to CD4+ T cells, DC were enriched using a separation procedure avoiding overnight culture which could lead to an altered phenotype. These DC were used as antigen-presenting cells (APC) in stimulation cultures of major histocompatibility complex class II-restricted T cells. It was found that they induce antigen-dependent lymphokine production by T cells and therefore could present exogenous antigens. These processing takes place intracellularly, because fixation abrogates presentation to T cells.…

¿Constructores de Mercado y de Estado? A propósito del Campomanes de V. Llombart

1994

This article seeks to discuss some of the conclusions V. Llombart’s study arrives at about the figure and the meaning of the count of Campomanes in the context of absolutism during the second half of the XVIIIth century. More specifically, it calls in question the idea of an action led by a reforming possibilism, half way between the non-enlightenment and the revolution, which would permit, besides, to establish a doubtful line of continuity among some of the reforms of the second half of the century and the plans of Cádiz. It proposes, on the contrary, to reintroduce an interpretative logic not so attached to the schemes of “market” and “state”.

Spectroscopy of excited state positronium

1994

Electric dipole transitions in the microwave range have been induced between the fine-structure levels of positronium in the excited staten=2. As an indication of the transitions, we used the increase in Lyman-α radiation when the metastable 23S1-level is depopulated. The results for the transitions 23S1→23P0,1,2 areΝ 0=18499.65±1.20±4.00 MHz,Ν 1=13012.42 ±0.65±1.54 MHz andΝ 2=8624.38±0.54±1.40 MHz. The first error is statistical and the second systematic. The precision of the present measurement has improved by a factor of 3, compared to previous data. Recent bound state QED-calculations have been extended to the orderR t8 α 4lnα −1. The not yet completely calculated orderR t8 α 4 is estim…

Intersystem crossing in Fe(II) coordination compounds

1994

Fe(II) spin-crossover systems can be quantitatively converted from the low-spin (LS) to the high-spin (HS) state well below the thermal transition temperature by irradiating either into the metal-ligand charge transfer or d-d absorption bands, and even in low-spin systems a transient population of the HS state can be achieved. This fact can be made use of to determine HS → LS relaxation rate constants for a wide variety of Fe(II) spin-crossover and low-spin systems. The HS → LS relaxation shows strong deviations from an Arrhenius behaviour, with nearly temperature-independent tunnelling below ∼70 K and a thermally activated process above ∼100 K. The range of more than 12 orders of magnitude…

Identification and purification of a stress associated nuclear carbohydrate binding protein (Mr 33000) from rat liver by application of a new photore…

1994

A photoreactive alpha-D-glucose probe has been designed for the specific detection of carbohydrate binding proteins (CBPs). The probe consists of four parts: (i) an alpha-D-glucose moiety; (ii) the digoxigenin tag; (iii) the photoreactive cross-linker; and (iv) the lysyl-lysine backbone. After incubation with lectins in the dark, the probe is activated and cross-linked to the CBPs after being treated by several flashes. Using this method we have identified a new alpha-D-glucose CBP of M(r) = 33,000, termed CBP33, in the nuclei of rats exposed to transient immobilization stress. Monoclonal antibodies were raised against the partially purified protein and subsequently used to enrich CBP33. It…

Klinik und Therapie der frhen lepromatsen Lepra an einem Fallbeispiel

1994

Taking into account the increase in worldwide human migration, leprosy is of growing importance in the differential diagnosis of dermatological diseases encountered in Central Europe. We report on the case of a young man from Ghana who developed hypopigmented maculae and plaques on his trunk and proximal limbs. The diagnosis of lepromatous leprosy could be made in consideration of the histological pattern of infiltrating leucocytes and detection of numerous acid-fast mycobacteria on skin biopsy. The results of the physical examination as well as routine laboratory and immunological parameters were consistent with this form of leprosy. Due to glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase deficiency, tre…

Weekly Levofolinic Acid and 5-Fluorouracil Plus Hydroxyurea in Metastatic Gastrointestinal Adenocarcinomas

1994

There were 42 patients with advanced gastrointestinal carcinomas (GA) enrolled in the study. In the Phase I part of the study we identified the MTD of 5-fluorouracil (5FU) in combination with levofolinic acid 100 mg/m2 per week intravenously plus hydroxyurea 1 g/m2 per week given by mouth in 3 refracted doses starting 6 hours after 5FU was administered. This treatment was given weekly for 6 consecutive weeks followed by a 15-day rest period. We were not able to increase 5FU weekly dosage above 700 mg/m2 due to the occurrence of grade 3-4 gastrointestinal toxicity. Thus 5FU was employed at 600 mg/m2 per week for the Phase II part of the study. Among 20 evaluable patients with measurable meta…

Time integral and time differential Mössbauer measurements on [57Co/Mn(bipy)3](PF6)2

1994

The Mossbauer emission spectra of nucleogenic iron(II) complexes with a low spin (LS) ground state show two metastable iron(II) high spin (HS) states at low temperatures. In order to identify these metastable HS states, the compound [57Co/Mn(bipyridine)3](PF6)2 has been studied by time differential Mossbauer emission spectroscopy (TDMES) and optical lifetime measurements of excited electronic states in the corresponding Fe-doped Mn compound. The lifetime of one of the HS states of the nucleogenic iron(II) determined by TDMES has been measured to be the same as the lifetime of the laser-excited iron(II) electronic state.

One gene, two transcripts: isolation of an alternative transcript encoding for the autoantigen La/SS-B from a cDNA library of a patient with primary …

1994

A cDNA library was prepared from peripheral blood lymphocytes of an autoimmune patient with primary Sjögrens' syndrome. The cDNA library was screened with the patients own autoimmune serum being monospecific for the nuclear autoantigen La/SS-B. Thereby an alternative type of La mRNA was identified that differed from the known La mRNA due to an exchange of the exon 1. Sequencing of the genomic region between the exons 1 and 2 showed that the alternative 5'-end is a part of the intron. In addition, the presence of an alternative promoter site, which exists within the intron downstream of the exon 1, became evident. In consequence, the alternative La mRNA is the result of a promoter switching …

Polymersynthesen durch repetitive N-alkylierungen

1994

The repetitive N-alkylation reaction, at first used by Marvel, turned out to be a very versatile method for the synthesis of polycations. Rembaum introduced the name ionenes for this type of polymers. In the first part of the lecture some examples of single-stranded ionenes are described. The second part shows how the repetitive N-alkylation can be used for the synthesis of spiro polymers. In these double-stranded polymers two spiro-conjugated rings of the main chain have a central quaternary nitrogen in common (spiro-ionenes or spiro-azonia polymers)

Carboxylation of a linear low density polyethylene via gamma irradiation in presence of carbon dioxide in subcritical and supercritical conditions

1994

Abstract In this work the molecular modifications induced in a linear low density polyethylene gamma irradiated in presence of carbon dioxide both in subcritical and supercritical conditions are presented. The obtained results indicate that this process can be a new and interesting way in order to graft oxidized groups in the polyethylene chains. Moreover it is worth noting that, together with these functionalization reactions, also a significant crosslinking occurs, with improvement in some mechanical tensile behaviour.

Amygdala pathology in Parkinson's disease.

1994

The amygdala undergoes severe pathological changes during the course of Parkinson's disease (PD). Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites are distributed in a specific manner throughout the nuclear complex. The lesional pattern displays only minor interindividual variation. The most prominent changes occur in the accessory cortical and central nuclei. The cortical, accessory basal and granular nuclei show less severe alterations, while the basal and lateral nuclei, as well as the intercalated cell masses, generally remain uninvolved. The amygdala receives a broad range of afferents, allowing integration of exteroceptive information with interoceptive data. It generates major projections to the isocor…

Relativistic corrections to the Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum rule in the constitutent quark model

1994

Relativistic corrections have been calculated for the Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum rule in the framework of the constituent-quark model. These corrections lead to additional absorption strength due to relativistic dipole currents in the case of a hyperfine interaction. The introduction of anomalous magnetic moments requires a subtraction of the dispersion integral at infinity. The additional effects of such anomalous moments, however, are numerically very small within the model.

Thermal broadening of the Soret band in heme complexes and in heme-proteins: role of iron dynamics

1994

We report the thermal broadening of the Soret band in heme-CO, heme-OH and protoporphyrin IX in the temperature range 300-20 K. For protoporphyrin IX the temperature dependent Gaussian line broadening follows the behavior predicted by the harmonic approximation in the entire temperature range investigated. In contrast, for heme-CO and heme-OH the harmonic behavior is obeyed only up to about 180 K and an anomalous line broadening increase is observed at higher temperatures. This effect is attributed to the onset of anharmonic motions of the iron atom with respect to the porphyrin plane. Comparison with previously reported analogous data for heme proteins enables us to suggest that the onset …

Cardiovascular, ventilatory and total activity responses of brown trout to handling stress

1994

Changes in total activity, heart and ventilation rates were observed in 2-year-old brown trout, following handling stress, using non-contact bioelectronic monitoring equipment. Experiments were carried out in laboratory conditions at water temperatures below 4° C, Transfer between tanks as well as 5 min restraint stress increased the total activity of fish for 24 to 48 h, after which it declined to near the pre-stress level. The transfer and struggle both elevated the heart rate for 3 to 4 days. Ventilation rate was elevated to a maximum of about 30% above the nominal level and recovered within 3 to 4 days. Both heart and ventilation rates were higher in feeding fish relative to fasting fis…

Vaginal reconstruction with bilateral island "extended" groin flaps: description of a personal technique.

1994

We propose a vaginal reconstruction method using two island "extended" groin flaps designed over the iliac crests and in axis with the superficial circumflex iliac arteries. After a surgical revision of the pelvic organs and dissection of the area between the bladder and the rectum, the two flaps pass, extraperitoneally by way of the abdomen, through an incision made along the lateral margin of the rectus muscle and, from before to behind, through the fibrovascular lamina lateral to the bladder, and finally are placed in the area between the bladder and the rectum, where they are sutured. The technique has been applied to one patient and allowed reconstruction of a vaginal canal with very s…

CEMS of insulators by use of gas-flow counters

1994

Gas-flow CEMS counters are usually designed in such a manner that the sample to be investigated is inserted into the counter and serves as the backing cathode. If the sample consists of an insulating material, serious problems are expected by charging-up effects similar to those appearing in Maze counters. These problems are discussed in detail. It could be shown by experiments with glass samples that their very low surface conductivity is sufficient to allow a defined operation of such gas-flow CEMS detectors. The electric field strength between the surface of the sample and the anode has to be equal or higher than that between the entrance window and the anode. This can be ensured by an a…

Resume Science relativement recente, la Geologie est tres etroitement liee a la conception meme du Temps. Or, dans laScience classique, et notamment en Physique, le temps est concu comme le simple lieu du developpement de phenomenes entierement determines par l'action de lois necessaires. Molecular analysis of the erythropoietin receptor system in patients with polycythaemia vera

1994

Summary Erythropoietin (EPO) is a potent regulator of the viability, proliferation and differentiation of erythroid progenitor cells. Its effect is mediated by binding to the erythropoietin receptor (EPO-R), a member of a new cytokine receptor family. Alterations of the EPO/EPO-R system have recently been shown to be involved in the pathogenesis of familial erythrocytosis and polycythaemia vera (PV). In order to define whether genetic changes in the EPO-R gene and its ligand play a role in the development of PV, the structure and expression levels of the EPO-R and EPO genes were examined in samples from bone marrow and/or peripheral blood mononuclear cells of 24 patients with PV. As expecte…

Lamb-Mössbauer factor in the spin crossover compound Fe(tpa)(NCS)2

1994

The Lamb-Mossbauer factor in spin crossover compounds has been the subject of controversial discussions in the literature. For several compounds, a significantly larger Lamb-Mossbauer factor for the complex molecules in the low-spin (fls) than in the high-spin (fhs) state has been reported, while for compounds studied in our laboratory such differences could not be observed. We prepared the compound Fe(tpa)(NCS)2, thef factors of which were reported to be very different. We could not prove thef factors of this compound to be different. The implications of a different structural phase of compound prepared by us are discussed.
