Pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of benperidol in schizophrenic patients after intravenous and two different kinds of oral application
1994
Pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of benperidol were determined in 13 schizophrenic patients after acute administration of 6 mg benperidol as an intravenous (i.v.) bolus injection, orally as liquid, and orally as tablets using a partially randomized cross-over design. Drug plasma levels were determined by high performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection and subjected to model independent pharmacokinetic analyses. After i.v. dosing the geometric means (mean-g) were 3.2 min for the distribution half-life, 5.80 h for the elimination half-life (t1/2 beta), 4.21 l/kg for the distribution volume, 7.50 h for the mean residence time (MRT), and 0.50 l/(h*kg) for the clearance…
Advanced PSA Bipolar Transistors for Wireless Applications: Measurements of Scattering Parameters and Noise Figure
1994
A complete investigation on the performance of a series of double polysilicon self-aligned (PSA) bipolar transistors in terms of scattering parameters and noise figure is here reported. The devices have been characterized over the 1-4 GHz frequency range in several bias conditions to the aim of assessing the optimum bias values for the best trade-off between noise and gain performance. This is the first part of an extensive investigation currently performed on 5 families of PSA devices having different emitter configuration and size which have been manufactured by SGS-Thomson to undergo a comparative analysis on the global transistor performance.
Mössbauer and TEM studies of the perovskite system (1-y)La2/3 $$A$$ 1/3TiO3·yLaFeO3
1994
The microscopic nature of the Mossbauer phase analysis has been found as being particularly valuable in testing assumptions suggested by TEM results regarding the microdomain structure and the population of different lattice sites by iron ions in the perovskite system (1-y)La2/3\(A\)1/3TiO3·yLaFeO3 with 0.04<y < 0.25 (\(A\) is an A-site vacancy). This system was found to contain only Fe3+-phases which are stable under normal conditions, but moderate heating in vacuo causes a partial reduction of ferric ions to ferrous ions.

Positron annihilation study of spin-crossover in [Fe x Zn1−x (ptz)6](BF4)2 single crystals
1994
Positron lifetime measurements were carried out on [Fe x Zn1−x (ptz)6](BF4)2 single crystals in the temperature range of 72–300 K. Complementary Doppler broadening spectra were also recorded at room temperature. The probability of the formation of o-Ps (lifetime 500–1400 ps) was between 10–30%. Both the spin density and the lattice parameters of the sample affected the lifetime of o-Ps through the ortho-para conversion and the pick-off annihilation, respectively. The positron annihilation technique proved to be a sensitive detector of the spin-crossover5T2 ↔1A1 and of the concomitant phase transformation.
Somatostatin-Rezeptor-Szintigraphie bei endokriner Orbitopathie
1994
Somatostatin receptor scintigraphy with 111In-labeled octreotide proves to be a very sensitive diagnostic tool for evaluation of inflammative activity in endocrine ophthalmopathy (EO). The results of somatostatin receptor scintigraphy (SRS) in 40 patients with EO show a high orbital accumulation of 111In-octreotide in clinically active EO (4 h-median/orbit-brain-ratio: 12.6; controls 4 h-median: 5.8) Patients with clinically inactive EO (4 h-median: 7.1) show a similar orbital accumulation of radioactivity compared to controls. 5 patients with active orbital myositis also revealed an even higher orbital accumulation of radioactivity (4 h-median: 42.3). The diagnostic value of SRS lies in it…
Localization of antigens PwA33 and La on lampbrush chromosomes and on nucleoplasmic structures in the oocyte of the urodele Pleurodeles waltl: Light …
1994
Monoclonal antibodies A33/22 and La11G7 have been used to study the distribution of the corre-sponding antigens, PwA33 and La, on the lampbrush chromosome loops and nucleoplasmic structures of P. waltl oocytes, using immunofluorescence, confocal laser scanning microscopy and immunogold labeling. The results obtained with these antibodies have been compared with those obtained with the Sm-antigen-specific monoclonal antibody Y12. All these monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) labeled the matrices of the majority of normal loops along their whole length. Nucleoplasmic RNP granules showed a strong staining with the mAbs La11G7 and Y12 throughout their mass, but with the mAb A33/22, they showed only a …

Characterization of T–cell subclasses and NK–cells in lysosomal disorders by immuno–electron microscopy
1994
Previous studies have shown that B and T lymphocytes are affected in lysosomal disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the involvement of subclasses of T lymphocytes and natural killer cells in lysosomal diseases. CD4+, CD8+, and CD56+ cells were immunomagnetically separated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells in 10 patients with various lysosomal diseases--including one patient each with infantile, late infantile, and juvenile neuronal ceroid-lipfuscinoses, two patients with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type I and four patients with MPS type III, and one patient with mucolipidosis type II; all lymphocytes were studied by light and electron microscopy. Respective vacuolar or …
A Neo2 bayesian foundation of the maxmin value for two-person zero-sum games
1994
A joint derivation of utility and value for two-person zero-sum games is obtained using a decision theoretic approach. Acts map states to consequences. The latter are lotteries over prizes, and the set of states is a product of two finite sets (m rows andn columns). Preferences over acts are complete, transitive, continuous, monotonie and certainty-independent (Gilboa and Schmeidler (1989)), and satisfy a new axiom which we introduce. These axioms are shown to characterize preferences such that (i) the induced preferences on consequences are represented by a von Neumann-Morgenstern utility function, and (ii) each act is ranked according to the maxmin value of the correspondingm × n utility …
An Approximate Technique for Dynamic Elastic-Plastic Analysis
1994
The possibility of obtaining an approximate sufficiently reliable response for elasticplastic discretized structures subjected to dynamic load (kinematical and/or mechanical), with alow computational effort, has been considered. A suitable technique to this effect comes from the form of the dynamic influence matrix of imposed plastic strains on self-stresses, which is shaped by adding up a sparse time-dependent matrix and a block diagonal time-independent matrix (which is the sum of two block diagonal matrices). Several cases of practical interest have been studied, among these cases a special one where all the degrees-of-freedom are dynamic. The technique is compared to other approximate t…
Theoretical and experimental behaviour of the muscle viscosity coefficient during maximal concentric actions
1994
The aim of this study was to calculate the theoretical variation of the nonlinear damping factor (B) as a function of the muscle shortening velocity, and then to compare the theoretical values with the experimental data obtained on both the elbow flexor and the ankle extensor muscles. The theoretical variation of the B factor was determined from a muscle model consisting of a contractile component in parallel with a viscous damper both in series with an elastic component, and by using, the characteristic equation of the force velocity curve. In this muscle model, the viscous element modelled the inability of the muscle to generate as big a contracting force (while shortening) as possible un…
Interactions of lysozyme with hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymethacrylate stationary phases in reversed phase chromatography (RPC)
1994
Two silicas, one with a mean pore diameter of 30 nm and the other non-porous, were coated with polymethacrylates of increasing hydrophobicity in the sequence: poly-2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (P2HEMA)1 polyethylmethacrylate (PEMA) and poly-n-octylmethacrylate (POMA). Association constants, Kass, between lysozyme and the coated silicas were determined by means of frontal analysis, and the apparent heats of adsorption, delta Happ, by means of microcalorimetry. Using Kass and delta Happ the changes in the apparent free energy, delta Gapp, and in the apparent entropy, delta Sapp, were calculated at a concentration of lysozyme < 10 mumol/l. The association between the lysozyme and the coated sili…

Involvement of microsomal vesicles in part of the sensitivity of carnitine palmitoyltransferase I to malonyl-CoA inhibition in mitochondrial fraction…
1994
Liver mitochondrial fractions as normally isolated contain only 10-20% of total mitochondria and may not be representative of the whole mitochondrial population. This study was designed to evaluate the dependence of the sensitivity of carnitine palmitoyl-transferase I (CPT I) to malonyl-CoA inhibition in mitochondrial fractions that are not normally studied. Four fractions prepared from rat liver were found to be contaminated to different extents by microsome vesicles, on the basis of marker-enzyme activities and micrographic data. Purification of mitochondrial fractions on a Percoll gradient decreased to some extent the microsomal contamination, which was due in part to the existence of cl…

Brownian dynamics of polydisperse colloidal hard spheres: Equilibrium structures and random close packings
1994
Recently we presented a new technique for numerical simulations of colloidal hard-sphere systems and showed its high efficiency. Here, we extend our calculations to the treatment of both 2- and 3-dimensional monodisperse and 3-dimensional polydisperse systems (with sampled finite Gaussian size distribution of particle radii), focusing on equilibrium pair distribution functions and structure factors as well as volume fractions of random close packing (RCP). The latter were determined using in principle the same technique as Woodcock or Stillinger had used. Results for the monodisperse 3-dimensional system show very good agreement compared to both pair distribution and structure factor predic…

Beta-adrenoceptors mediate inhibition of [3H]-acetylcholine release from the isolated rat and guinea-pig trachea: role of the airway mucosa and prost…
1994
1. Rat or guinea pig isolated tracheae were labelled with [3H]-choline to measure evoked tritium outflow, which reflects neuronal release of [3H]-acetylcholine. Tritium outflow was evoked either by electrical stimulation of the extrinsic vagal nerve (rat tracheae) or by 27 mM potassium (guinea pig tracheae). 2. In rat tracheae isoprenaline (0.01, 0.1 microM) inhibited evoked [3H]-acetylcholine release, whereas beta 2-adrenoceptor-selective agonists (fenoterol, formoterol, salbutamol) were ineffective. 3. The inhibitory effect of isoprenaline was abolished under the following conditions: (i) presence of propranolol (1 microM) or of the beta 1-selective antagonist CGP 20712 A (0.1 microM); (i…
Molecules and Morphology, Phylogenetics and Genetics
1994
Various explanations can be offered for the incongruence between phylogenetic hypotheses resulting from morphological and molecular data sets. Of these, the possibility that incongruence may result from the mutation of major morphogenetic genes leading to dramatic morphological divergence unaccompanied by equivalent change of the phylogenetic marker molecule(s) used is discussed in detail. As evidence for this hypothesis, several examples for such incongruence are surveyed. It seems possible that in many cases the genetic basis of the morphological characters responsible for the incongruence found may be simple, and that the genes involved may be homologous to genes known from mutant system…
Cooperative self-assembling in statistical copolymers: a new approach to high-temperature thermoplastic elastomers
1994
Based on previous work, where it was shown that 4-urazoylbenzoic acid (U4A) groups, which are attached statistically to polybutadiene, form ordered supramolecular arrays in the unpolar polymer matrix, the present work describes the synthesis of a new molecular building block capable of self-assembling in the unpolar polymer matrix. 5-Urazoylisophthalic acid (U35A) groups attached to 1,4-polybutadiene chains cause the formation of a thermoplastic elastomer of improved properties. The clusters of functional groups show an endothermic transition. The melting temperature increases for low levels of modification from 130°C up to 190°C. The mechanical properties (stress–strain and dynamic mechani…
Approximations of positive operators and continuity of the spectral radius III
1994
AbstractWe prove estimates on the speed of convergence of the ‘peripheral eigenvalues’ (and principal eigenvectors) of a sequence Tn of positive operators on a Banach lattice E to the peripheral eigenvalues of its limit operator T on E which is positive, irreducible and such that the spectral radius r(T) of T is a Riesz point of the spectrum of T (that is, a pole of the resolvent of T with a residuum of finite rank) under some conditions on the kind of approximation of Tn to T. These results sharpen results of convergence obtained by the authors in previous papers.
An in vivo comparative study of two apex locators
1994
Two different electronic apex locators were used before extraction to determine working length in 116 root canals belonging to 34 molars. The results were then compared with postextraction working length measurements. The determinations were made before and after eliminating the canal contents and drying the interior. The results showed that 84.8% and 79.3% of the Odometer, and 89.6% and 88.7% of the Endocater readings for dry and nondry canals, respectively, occurred within the two 0.5-mm intervals closest to the apical constriction.
Enhanced expression of IL-8 in normal human keratinocytes and human keratinocyte cell line HaCaT in vitro after stimulation with contact sensitizers,…
1994
Abstract To investigate the interleukin-8 production of keratinocytes after stimulation in vitro we have used various agents: (i) contact sensi-tizer (2,4-dinitrofiuorobenzene, 3-n-penladecylcatechol); (ii) tolerogen (5-methyl-3-n-pentadecylcatechol); (iii) irritant (sodium lauryl sulfate). Interleukin-8 gene expression was assessed by northern blot hybridization of the total cytoplasmic RNA extracted from subconfluent normal human keratinocyte cultures and the keratinocyte cell line HaCaT using a radiolabeled DNA probe specific for human interleukin-8. Intcrleukin-8 gene expression was markedly increased upon in vitro stimulation after 1-6 h with contact sensitizers, tolerogen and the irri…
Laser Welding - Suitable for Vascular Anastomosis?
1994
Carotid arteries of 21 piglets were transsected and reanastomosed either by laser welding (Neodym:YAG laser) or by conventional suture anastomosis. Histological specimens of the anastomoses obtained 2 to 32 days after the operation showed less foreign body reaction and intimal hyperplasia after laser welding than after suturing. There was, however, no significant difference when comparing occurrence of thrombosis, patency rate, or growth of the anastomosis in growing animals. Neither our study nor a review of the literature of laser-assisted vascular anastomosis in microvessels and large arteries up to 5 mm diameter could establish a definite clinical application for laser welding in vascul…
Helicobacter sp. strain Mainz isolated from an AIDS patient with septic arthritis: case report and nonradioactive analysis of 16S rRNA sequence
1994
A campylobacter-like organism was isolated from an effusion of the left knee joint of an AIDS patient 2 weeks after bacteremia with a morphologically identical organism. Amplified genomic 16S rRNA sequences were analyzed by a nonradioactive blotting technique. The closest match was found with Helicobacter fenelliae (97.7% homology). Sequence data and phenotype suggest that the isolate may represent a so far unrecognized species of the genus Helicobacter.
Inclusive education in Finland: present and future perspectives.
1994
The movement to integrate special education students into normal school classes started to develop in Finland in the 1960s. At the same time, the number of students labeled “special” in the Finnish comprehensive school system exploded from 2% to 17% of all school children. Presently, 84% of all special education placements are part-time placements. Special schools and special classes comprise 15% of all special education placements, while full inclusion is only 1% of all special education placements. Some factors affecting the current integration of special students and the development of integration are discussed.
Dielectric and electro-optical studies of a ferroelectric copolysiloxane.
1994
This paper reports an extensive study of the static (spontaneous polarization, ${\mathit{P}}_{\mathit{s}}$, tilt angle \ensuremath{\theta}, and pitch) and dynamic properties of a ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer. It is shown that a ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer (diluted polysiloxane) exhibits physical behavior similar to that of a low-molar-mass liquid crystal in terms of contrast ratio, pitch of the helix, and relationship between ${\mathit{P}}_{\mathit{s}}$ and \ensuremath{\theta}. The degenerated collective modes for the director rotation are shown to split into two modes at the Sm-A--Sm-${\mathit{C}}^{\mathrm{*}}$ phase transition temperature using dielectric spectros…
Odd-even staggering in simple models of metal clusters
1994
The odd-even staggering of free-electron metal clusters is studied using several simple models: Noninter-acting electrons in a rectangular box, triaxial harmonic oscillator, and Huckel model. Finite temperature effects are studied using the Monte Carlo method. All the models show qualitatively similar odd-even staggering. In the ground state the HOMO-LUMO gap is larger than the neighbouring energy gaps. The reduction of the odd-even staggering due to exchange and correlation is studied using the local-spin-density approximation.
A selective medium for the isolation of malolactic mutants of Leuconostoc oenos
1994
We have developed a selective medium for the isolation of Leuconostoc oenos mutants defective in malolactic fermentation. Forty per cent of colonies isolated directly on selective plates after UV mutagenesis had lost their ability to degrade malate. None of the tested mutants showed any detectable malolactic activity and all lacked a protein band corresponding in size to that of the malolactic enzyme. The availability of such mutants provides a valuable tool both for physiological and genetic research on malolactic fermentation.
Proposal of Up-to-Date Standards on Methods of Measuring Noise Parameters of Microwave Transistors
1994
One of the most interesting topics for microrwave community is the characterization of low-noise transistors. After so many years, the Standards suggested by IEEE in 1960 are considered obsolete by the experimenters. A new methodology is here proposed as a standard. To support this proposal, an original measuring system for the complete characterization of microwave transistors in terms of noise, gain and scattering parameters from noise figure measurements only is presented.
A study of electrochemically-induced corrosion of low carbon steel in a medium modelling acid rain
1994
Complementary electrochemical, spectrophotometric and electron microsopic investigations were made in addition to the conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopic (CEMS) measurements to learn more about the mechanism of corrosion of low carbon steel samples in aqueous sulfate and sulfite containing sulfate solutions (pH 3.5, 6.5 and 8.5). Passivation of iron in pure sulfate solution was studied in detail in earlier papers. In the present work, we used a solution containing both sulfate and sulfite anions to obtain more information about the effect of acid rain on low carbon steel samples. The compositions and thicknesses of the passive films formed due to the electrochemical treatments were …
