The influence of electrostimulation on mechanical and morphological characteristics of the triceps surae.

The present study assessed the effects of training using electrostimulation of muscle (EMS) on the torque-angular velocity and torque-angle relationships, and the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the triceps surae. Twelve physical education students, divided into two groups (6 controls, 6 experimental), participated in the experiment. The EMS sessions were undertaken using a 'Complex-type' stimulator. Flexible elastomer electrodes were used. The current used discharged pulses lasting for 200 microseconds at a frequency of 70 Hz. The durations of contraction and rest were 5 and 15 s, respectively. Scaling in colloidal crystallization

The process of colloidal crystallization has already been separately investigated by light scattering mearurements of the crystalline order (Bragg peaks) and of long-ranged density fluctuations (small-angle scattering). We present the firstsimultaneous small- and large-angle light scattering experiment. Our measurements have been performed on hard-sphere colloids of different particle densities. We show results for the temporal evolution of crystallization and find two distinct regimes: homogeneous nucleation and diffusion- or reaction-limited growth at early times, followed by ripening of the Lifshitz-Slyozov or Lifshitz-Allen-Cahn type. Abstract Using a time-of-flight technique, different transport mechanisms, deep trapping, multiple shallow trapping and Gaussian transport, can be observed in the different temperature and phase regions of the liquidcrystalline (LC) photoconductor hexapentyloxytriphenylene (HPT). Transient photocurrents and carrier mobilities for various temperatures, electric fields, and sample histories were examined. The melting behaviour of small silicon clusters

Abstract We report an analysis of the melting behaviour of small silicon clusters interacting via a nonlinear interatomic potential with four-body terms. The analysis shows, by means of Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations, that the small silicon clusters undergo, in a vacuum, structural changes from a solid rigid state to a liquid-like state. The melting temperature exhibits a strong variation with cluster size.

Nucleosynthesis constraints on active-sterile neutrino conversions in the early universe with random magnetic field

We consider active-sterile neutrino conversions in the early universe hot plasma in the presence of a random magnetic field generated at the electroweak phase transition. Within a random field domain the magnetization asymmetry of the lepton antilepton plasma produced by a uniform constant magnetic field is huge in contrast to their small density asymmetry, leading to a drastic change in the active-sterile conversion rates. Assuming that the random field provides the seed for the galactic field one can estimate the restrictions from primordial nucleosynthesis. Polyamines and related monoacetyl derivatives were studied in chick embryo retina during development (6th-19th day). Putrescine, which is high in the first phase of retinogenesis, is necessary to sustain both tissue proliferation and via N-acetylputrescine, gamma-aminobutyric acid synthesis. A later increase in spermidine and particularly spermine may play a role in the last phase of development when the retina reaches maturation. Complete congenital heart block is a serious complication of neonatal lupus erythematosus which most often occurs in children of mothers suffering from connective tissue disease. We report the occurrence of complete congenital heart block associated with autoimmune hepatitis (SLA-positive). A 32-year-old woman was treated for more than 10 years for autoimmune hepatitis (SLA-/ANA-positive) and remained in clinical remission under immunosuppressive therapy. She showed an MHC-haplotype typical for autoimmune hepatitis (A1, B8, DR3). Scaling behavior in the dynamics of a supercooled Lennard-Jones mixture

We present the results of a large scale molecular dynamics computer simulation of a binary, supercooled Lennard-Jones fluid. At low temperatures and intermediate times the time dependence of the intermediate scattering function is well described by a von Schweidler law. The von Schweidler exponent is independent of temperature and depends only weakly on the type of correlator. For long times the correlation functions show a Kohlrausch behavior with an exponent $\beta$ that is independent of temperature. This dynamical behavior is in accordance with the mode-coupling theory of supercooled liquids.

Pion Cloud Contribution to K+ Nucleus Scattering

A careful reanalysis is done of the contribution to $K^{+}$ nucleus scattering from the interaction of the kaon with the virtual pion cloud. The usual approximations made in the evaluation of the related kaon selfenergy are shown to fail badly. We also find new interaction mechanisms which provide appreciable corrections to the kaon selfenergy. Some of these contribute to the imaginary part below pion creation threshold. The inclusion of these new mechanisms in the inelastic part of the optical potential produces a significant improvement in the differential and total $K^{+}$ nuclear cross sections. Uncertainties remain in the dispersive part of the optical potential.

The structure of the quark propagator of $QCD$ in a confining background is not known. We make an Ansatz for it, as hinted by a particular mechanism for confinement, and analyze its implications in the meson and baryon correlators. We connect the various terms in the K\"allen-Lehmann representation of the quark propagator with appropriate combinations of hadron correlators, which may ultimately be calculated in lattice $QCD$. Furthermore, using the positivity of the path integral measure for vector like theories, we reanalyze some mass inequalities in our formalism. We define pure gauge $QCD$ on an infinite strip of width $L$. Techniques similar to those used in finite $TQCD$ allow us to relate $3D$-observables to pure $QCD_2$ behaviors. The non triviality of the $L \arrow 0$ limit is proven and the generalization to four dimensions described. The glueball spectrum of the theory in the small width limit is calculated and compared to that of the two dimensional theory.

Many extensions of the standard electroweak model Higgs sector suggest that the main Higgs decay channel is "invisible", for example, $h \to J J$ where $J$ denotes the majoron, a weakly interacting pseudoscalar Goldstone boson associated to the spontaneous violation of lepton number. 1H NMR, DSC, dielectric, and dilatometric studies of phase transitions and molecular dynamics in N (C2H5)4SbCl4

The results of dielectric, dilatometric, 1H NMR, and DSC studies on N(C2H5)4SbCl4 crystals are presented. The title compound undergoes two phase transitions at Tc1 = 272 K reversible of first order and at Tc2 = 393 K irreversible. The values of transition entropies and enthalpies are compared with those of other tetraethylammonium halogenoantimonates and bismuthates (III). The spin-lattice relaxation times and the values of the second moments of the 1H NMR line for the N(C2H5)4SbCl4 crystal are measured in the temperature range of 70 to 400 K. Two minima of T1 are observed. They are attributed to CH3 group reorientations. The activation energies for the processes are determined.

DNA synthesis was studied autoradiographically in unfertilized ascidian eggs (Ascidia malaca and Ciona intestinalis) that had been artificially activated by a K+-free external medium or a Ca-ionophore. Naked eggs of A. malaca were incubated in K+-free seawater that contained [3H]-thymidine for 30 min, and naked eggs of C. intestinalis were incubated in seawater supplemented with a Ca-ionophore and [3H]-thymidine for 15 min. Dynamics of Ca2+ and guanosine 5'-[gamma-thio]triphosphate action on insulin secretion from alpha-toxin-permeabilized HIT-T15 cells.

The time course of Ca2+ and GTP-analogue effects on insulin secretion was investigated in HIT-T15 cells permeabilized with Staphylococcus alpha-toxin. These cells responded to Ca2+ in the range 0.1-10 microM and could be used in a dynamic perifusion system because of the minimal run-down of the secretory response. High Ca2+ (10 microM) elicited a monophasic ATP-dependent stimulation of insulin secretion that reached a peak within 5 min (approximately 20-fold increase) and rapidly decreased during the subsequent 15 min to a plateau remaining above basal rates (0.1 microM Ca2+). Theoretical study of the kinetics of the correlated annealing of pairs of close (geminate) F-H centers in KCl and KBr crystals controlled by their diffusion and elastic attraction shows that the multi-step (kink) decay in defect concentrations observed more than once in thermostimulated experiments takes place only for very close F-H center pairs which are no further than fourth nearest neighbors. Effect of Endomycorrhizal Infection on Root System Development in the Apple Rootstock (Malus domestica Borkh.) M26

A mycorrhizal fungus (Glomus intraradices) is able to promote shoot growth of the apple rootstock M26. We have shown that the root system is also modified by the presence of the endophyte. Mycorrhiza formation reduced the shoot to root ratio and increased the specific root length. We show that in apple modifications in root architecture are mainly due to a reduction in the elongation of the different root orders.

Abstract We have estimated evapotranspiration from maize (Zca mays) using NOAA thermal images infrared and meteorological data, by means of the relation where Ed is the daily evapotranspiration, is the daily net radiation expressed in mm of water per day, (Ta−Ts)i is the temperature difference between air and corn surface obtained near midday, and Bi is a semi-empirical constant which has been calculated as 0·53±0·10mm day−1K−1. We have tested the method obtaining actual daily evapotranspiration of maize with an acceptable precision (±0·9 mm day−1 taken Penman's method as the standard). The Nielsen identities for the two-point functions of QED and QCD

We consider the Nielsen identities for the two-point functions of full QCD and QED in the class of Lorentz gauges. For pedagogical reasons the identities are first derived in QED to demonstrate the gauge independence of the photon self-energy, and of the electron mass shell. In QCD we derive the general identity and hence the identities for the quark, gluon and ghost propagators. The explicit contributions to the gluon and ghost identities are calculated to one-loop order, and then we show that the quark identity requires that in on-shell schemes the quark mass renormalisation must be gauge independent.
