Calculations of the ground and excited states ofF-type centers in corundum crystals
1994
The semiempirical intermediate neglect of differential overlap method was used for calculating optical properties of ${\mathit{F}}^{+}$ and F centers (oxygen vacancy trapped one and two electrons, respectively) embedded into large quantum clusters, ${\mathrm{Al}}_{26}$${\mathrm{O}}_{39}$. The geometry was optimized for both the ground and excited states of defects. Calculated absorption and luminescence energies obtained for ${\mathit{F}}^{+}$ and F centers are in good agreement with experimental data. Their energy levels lie in the gap between the upper valence band and conduction band, like for similar centers in MgO and alkali halides. It is shown that the oxygen vacancy in corundum crys…
Tripotential data processing for HES interpretation
1994
In this paper some methods are proposed and compared to correct the experimental measurements for preliminary processing of tripotential data which are acquired for HES prospecting. However, the use of those methods should be based upon an accurate analysis of all experimental data. Such an analysis ought to involve: 1) an estimate of the averaged measurement errors with their variance and distribution in both the space and the three apparent-resistivities domains; 2) the choice of a resistivity model capable of describing the actual volume under study. The differences among the three values of apparent resistivity measured on a point are generally influenced both by the resistivity distrib…
Changes in the adrenergic mechanisms of cerebral arteries after subarachnoid hemorrhage in goats.
1994
We have examined the effects of experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), induced by delivering autologous blood into the subarachnoid space, on the adrenergic mechanisms of the goat cerebrovascular bed. To achieve this, the response to noradrenaline was recorded both in vivo, by measuring cerebral blood flow in unanesthetized animals, and in vitro, by recording isometric tension in isolated cerebral arteries. In addition, we checked the function of adrenergic innervation by measuring the tritium efflux evoked by electrical stimulation in cerebral arteries preloaded with [3H]-noradrenaline, and we examined this innervation by using both fluorescent and electron transmission microscopy. Al…
Detection of Escherichia coli strains producing cytotoxic necrotizing factor type two (CNF2) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay
1994
Sheep and rabbit antisera were produced against lysates of E. coli strain 711 (pVir). This K-12 strain carries the Vir plasmid which codes for Cytotoxic Necrotizing Factor type 2 (CNF2). Immunoglobulin G (IgG) fractions of both immune sera were subsequently purified by a two-step precipitation method. To increase the specificity for CNF2, the sheep IgG preparation was extensively adsorbed against both a sonicated extract of isogenic K-12 strain 711 and intact phenol-treated cells of vaccine strain 711 (pVir). An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to detect clinical isolates of E. coli producing CNF2, using the final preparations of rabbit and sheep IgG in a double sandw…

Multiple nevoid spiradenomas.
1994
This report delineates a new clinical presentation of multiple benign spiradenoma (BS), a diffuse linear nevoid pattern. A 16-year-old girl, in otherwise good health, had many papulonodular lesions, varying in color from blue-gray to bright red, disposed linearly on the right half of her body, involving the periorbital region, cheek, lateral side of the neck, trunk, linea alba, right thigh, and leg. Only a few nodules were slightly painful. Lesions were reported to be present at birth; no family members had similar lesions, either in solitary or multiple form. Excisional biopsies of three lesions from the neck, abdomen, and leg, respectively, were performed; histologically, all three sample…
Theoretical simulations of the radiation-induced defect processes in insulating materials
1994
Abstract The results of two basic kinds of computer simulations of radiation-induced processes in insulating materials, one based on quantum-mechanical and pair-potential (atomistic) approaches, and the other a phenomenological theory of diffusion-controlled reactions, are presented. It is shown that, by combining different techniques (atom-atom potentials and semi-empirical quantum chemical methods) the optimized geometry and the electronic structure of a family of hole centres in crystalline corundum (α-Al2O3) could be found. Their energetics are analyzed; V2−, V−V−Mg hole centres all have a common basic element, namely the diatomic molecule O23−, which is responsible for their similar ab…

Ferroelectric liquid-crystalline elastomers
1994
Oriented liquid-crystalline (LC) elastomers (polar monodomains, concerning the direction of polarisation) have been prepared from polar monodomains of ferroelectric LC-polysiloxanes by a radical photocrosslinking process. Attempts to perform ferroelectric switching lead in these soft elastomers to an elastic stress which prohibits—for low voltages—a complete reorientation of the polar axis (ferroelectric switching). A ferroelectric switching can, however, be observed for high voltages. The loop of hysteresis of this switching is asymmetric concerning the zero point of the driving voltage. Piezoelectric measurements show that these elastomers combine an elastic memory for one polar state wit…

Fenitrothion uptake and bioconcentration in the European eel(Anguilla anguilla)
1994
Eels (Anguilla anguilla) were exposed to 0.02 mg/L of the organophosphorus pesticide fenitrothion during 144 hours in semi‐static conditions. BCF, intBCF, uptake rate constants (Ku) and elimination rate constants (Kd) of fenitrothion were determined in brain, gills, blood and muscle tissues of the eel. A simple one‐compartment model fitted the uptake and elimination characteristics. Plateau were reached at different times in the different tissues: at 24 hr in gills, 72 hr in brain and blood and 120 hr in muscle tissue. BCF were ranged from 117 for blood to 658 for muscle. Muscle tissue showed the highest BCF, intBCF, Ku and the lowest Kd .

Analysis of the atmospheric and emissivity influence on the splitwindow equation for sea surface temperature
1994
Abstract In this paper we have analysed the effects of the different atmospheric species (water vapour, fixed gases and aerosols) and the surface emissivity on the split-window method for determining the sea surface temperature. The widely used split-window method is based on the differential absorption of water vapour in the atmospheric window 10.5ndash;12.5 μm. Other atmospheric species with absorption coefficients different to that of water vapour can then have a large influence on the split-window. The effect of gases, such as C02, N20, CH4, CO and 03, and maritime aerosols is evaluated by comparing the effect of the water vapour alone. To do this we simulated AVHRR measurements in chan…
Aussagefähigkeit und Stellenwert von bildgebender Diagnostik und Duplexsonographie bei Neugeborenen mit nekrotisierender Enterokolitis
1994
In this prospective study 101 sonographic examinations of superior mesenteric artery blood flow velocities, indices and blood flow volume were consecutively performed in 41 newborn to diagnose necrotising enterocolitis (NEC). Intramural and portal venous gas was also estimated. The artifacts of air in the AMS and the portal system were examined in an experimental study. The results of sonography and abdominal radiography were equivalent in the case of definitely established NEC, portal venous gas being more sensitive to detection by sonography. Abdominal radiography was indicated as the primary examination in case of a clearly identified clinical course. Sonography should be performed so th…
Cloning and sequencing of the cDNA encoding human glutaredoxin.
1994
Glutaredoxin (thioltransferase) is a small, heat-stable protein, which is involved in thiol/disulfide exchange reactions. We have isolated a cDNA that encodes glutaredoxin from a human brain cDNA library. The encoded protein contains 106 amino acids with a calculated molecular mass of 11.76 kDa and an isoelectric point of 8.09. The amino acid sequence deduced from the cDNA is more than 80% identical to those of other mammalian glutaredoxins.
Alpha decay of the new isotopes207, 208Ac
1994
Two new neutron-deficient isotopes207,208Ac have been produced in fusion reactions with 5.2–5.6 MeV/nucleon40Ar ions on175Lu and identified on the basis of genetic correlations. The fusion evaporation products were separated on-line using a gas-filled magnetic recoil separator. The alpha energy and half-life of208Ac were determined to be (7572±15) keV and (95 −16 +24 ) ms, respectively. A new alpha line with a half-life of (25 −5 +9 ) ms and an energy of (7758±20) keV is assigned to the decay of an isomeric state in208Ac. Another new activity with a half-life of (22 −9 +40 ) ms and an alpha energy of (7712±25) keV is assigned to207Ac.

F17-like fimbriae from an invasive Escherichia coli strain producing cytotoxic necrotizing factor type 2 toxin
1994
The F17b fimbriae encoded by the transmissible virulence plasmid Vir, also coding for cytotoxic necrotizing factor type 2, were characterized. A 5.7-kb region of Vir mediates in vitro N-acetylglucosamine-sensitive adhesion to calf intestinal villi. Sequence analysis revealed that this region codes for a structural subunit and an adhesin closely related to the F17-A and F17-G proteins encoded by the F17 fimbrial gene cluster. The F17b-A gene presents an open reading frame of 540 bp encoding a polypeptide of 180 amino acids with a putative signal peptide of 21 residues. The mature protein shows an identity of 74% with the F17-A structural subunit. This 20-kDa protein is recognized by antiseru…
Model-independent separation of structure functions over an extended kinematical region
1994
A method for the separation of structure functions in (e, e′ p) experiments is proposed, which is an extension of the traditional Rosenbluth-type techniques of [1,2]. In our approach, we use a very flexible Ansatz to describe the structure functions within an extended kinematical regionG and determine its free parameters with a x2 minimization. The procedure is tested by pseudo data (12C(e, e′p)11Bg.s.) in the quasi-free region.

Isolated in-vitro perfusion of pig hearts obtained from the abattoir: an alternative to animal experiments?
1994
Isolated pig hearts (German farm pigs) were characterized after global in-vivo ischaemia as a potential alternative to in-vivo animal studies. Hearts were harvested from adult farm swine at the abattoir 10.3 +/- 2.1 min after incision of the carotid artery. They were immediately perfused and thereafter stored in ice-cold cardioplegic (St Thomas's) solution. After 38 +/- 3 min, retrograde perfusion was started with oxygenated pig blood (37 degrees C; 5000 U Heparin.l-1; pH 7.38 +/- 0.1; 11 mmol glucose.l-1) at a flow rate of 85 ml.min-1 100 g-1 wet weight (gww-1) for 30 min (n = 10). Additionally, shortly after obtaining the hearts, ATP and CP content were measured by enzymatic tests in 10 p…
Nitric oxide synthase isozymes. Characterization, purification, molecular cloning, and functions.
1994
Three isozymes of nitric oxide (NO) synthase (EC 1.14.13.39) have been identified and the cDNAs for these enzymes isolated. In humans, isozymes I (in neuronal and epithelial cells), II (in cytokine-induced cells), and III (in endothelial cells) are encoded for by three different genes located on chromosomes 12, 17, and 7, respectively. The deduced amino acid sequences of the human isozymes show less than 59% identity. Across species, amino acid sequences for each isoform are well conserved (> 90% for isoforms I and III, > 80% for isoform II). All isoforms use L-arginine and molecular oxygen as substrates and require the cofactors NADPH, 6(R)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrobiopterin, flavin adenine…
The kinetics of diffusion-controlled annealing of Frenkel defects in alkali halide crystals
1994
Abstract The annealing kinetics of the strongly correlated (the so-called geminate) pairs of both neutral F,H centers as well as F, I centers entering secondary triplets (F…Ihellip; self-trapped hole) in KCl and KBr crystals is calculated. In this model diffusion of hole I and H centers and their annihilation with electron F centers at short relative distances stimulated by the elastic or Coulomb interaction are taken into account. It is demonstrated that F,H pairs are destroyed by tunneling recombination already at times ≤ 10−4 s, i.e. much before the beginning of the thermostimulated experiments. A possible explanation of this contradiction is discussed.
Aggregation of Frenkel defects under irradiation: a mesoscopic approach
1994
The radiation-induced aggregation of Frenkel defects in solids is studied in terms of a mesoscopic approach. The asymmetry in elastic interactions between mobile interstitials (I-I) and between interstitials and vacancies (I-V) plays a decisive riile in the aggregation of similar defects. The conditions for defect aggregation are studied in detail for NaCl crystals. The critical dose rate for aggregation has been calculated as a function of the temperature as well as the aggregation rate as a function of temperature and dose rate. Furthermore, the r&e of deep traps (like impurities and di-vacancies), reducing the mobility of interstitials, and the r&le of dislocations serving as sinks for i…
Antagonistic effects of fluconazole and 5-fluorocytosine on candidacidal action of amphotericin B in human serum
1994
This study addressed the effects of fluconazole and 5-fluorocytosine on the candidacidal activity of amphotericin B in the presence of human serum. A Candida albicans isolate that was susceptible to all three agents according to standard testing procedures was employed. Fungicidal activity was estimated by using a flow cytometric procedure that exploited the fact that yeast cells killed by amphotericin B diminish in size and take up propidium iodide. The following findings were made. (i) Fluconazole and 5-fluorocytosine each failed to inhibit pseudohyphal formation and cell aggregation even when applied at 10 and 50 micrograms/ml, respectively, for up to 10 h. Hence, these agents were not f…
Effekt der kontralateralen Stimulation auf evozierte otoakustische Emissionen bei akutem Hörverlust*
1994
23 patients with unilateral hearing loss and presence of TEOAE on both ears were examined with regard to the association between contralateral acoustic stimulation and evoked otoacoustic emissions. Contralateral white noise of 40 dB HL, 50 dB HL and 60 dB HL decreases the amplitude of TEOAE both at the ear with and without hearing loss. In comparison with a group of subjects with normal hearing, the decrease in the amplitude of TEOAE was less in the group of patients with hearing loss. Two paradoxical cases were found with an increase in the TEOAE amplitude in the ear with hearing loss during contralateral stimulation. It is assumed that impairment of the efferent synapses on the outer hair…
Decreased benzodiazepine receptor binding in panic disorder measured by IOMAZENIL-SPECT. A preliminary report.
1994
Single photon emission tomography (SPECT) imaging of the central benzodiazepine receptor (BZr) became possible with the newly developed ligand 123I-IOMAZENIL. The BZr binding was investigated in ten patients with panic disorder (PP) compared to ten epileptic patients (EP). Panic patients had lower IOMAZENIL uptake rates in the frontal, occipital and temporal cortex than EP indicating the involvement of the BZr complex in panic disorder.
EFFECTS OF EXERCISE TRAINING AFTER MYOCARDIAL-INFARCTION ON MUSCULAR METABOLISM VALUE OF PHOSPHORUS 31 NMR-SPECTROSCOPY
1994
International audience; Abstract: P 31 NMR spectroscopy is a recent technique which allows a non-invasive and direct analysis of oxidative metabolism and pH changes, an indicator of acidosis due to lactic acid accumulation in the skeletal muscles. The authors investigated oxidative muscular metabolism of the sural triceps in 10 patients after myocardial infarction by performing a study after the acute phase and repeating the study after a programme of physical training. At rest, there were no significant differences. On the other hand, for the same level of maximal effort, the depletion in phosphocreatinine (PCr) and the accumulation of inorganic phosphate (Pi) were significantly lower afte…
Revegetation of harvested peat surfaces in relation to substrate quality
1994
. The relationship between substrate quality and pattern of revegetation of harvested peat surfaces was studied by means of a survey and a field experiment examining influences of modest NPK-fertilization on plant colonization of an initially bare peat surface. The harvested peat surfaces varied a great deal in their chemical and physical characteristics and the sites differed in revegetation pattern. Early successional vegetation was dominated by perennial species native to nutrient-poor habitats on all sites. Soluble phosphorus and ash content, mean particle size of surface peat, and thickness of peat layer had the strongest influence in a CCA-ordination of species. The species compositio…
Nachsorge des Mammakarzinoms
1994
7865 follow-up examinations were performed on 420 patients who had had surgery for carcinoma of the breast; there were 2755 radiographs of the chest, 2660 sonographic examinations of the upper abdomen and 2450 contralateral mammograms. The most common findings were metastases seen on the chest radiographs during the 13-24 and 25-60 months intervals in 4.7% of cases. The incidence increased with initially higher tumour stages and in ductal carcinomas. Sonography of the upper abdomen showed 4.3% of liver involvement, mostly between the second and fifth year; this was independent of tumour stage or the histology of the primary tumour. Positive mammography of the contralateral breast was found …
Calculation of chromatographic parameters by molecular topology: sulphamides
1994
This investigation was undertaken to test the ability of the molecular connectivity model to predict RF values in thin-layer chromatography (TLC) for a group of sulphamides using multi-variable regression equations with multiple correlation coefficients, standard error of estimate, F-Snedecor function values and Student's t-test as criteria of fit. Regression analyses showed that the molecular connectivity model predicts the values for this property in different silica gel stationary phases and different polar mobile phases. Corresponding stability and random studies were made on the selected prediction models which confirmed their goodness of fit. The results also demonstrated that differe…
An overview of robust Bayesian analysis
1994
Robust Bayesian analysis is the study of the sensitivity of Bayesian answers to uncertain inputs. This paper seeks to provide an overview of the subject, one that is accessible to statisticians outside the field. Recent developments in the area are also reviewed, though with very uneven emphasis. © 1994 SEIO.
Synthesis and characterization of optically active 2,4-disubstituted-2-oxazolines and their polymerization
1994
Four different optically active 2,4-disubstituted-2-oxazolines were synthesized and characterized. Cationic polymerization of these oxazolines were studied. Three of the oxazolines could be polymerized using methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate as initiator. S-(–)-2-Phenyl-4-isopropyl-2-oxazoline could not be polymerized under the conditions used.
Self-trapped exciton luminescence in α-quartz
1994
Abstract It is shown that two differently oriented (perpendicular and parallel to the c axis) serf-trapped excitons (STE ⊥ and STE ∥ ) can be created in the range of the Urbach tail of the fundamental absorption of α-quartz. Below this tail no STE luminescence was found. The alkali ion centers, excited below the tail, give luminescence bands, which can be replaced by substituting alkali ions with Cu + ions. It is concluded that both STE ∥ and STE ⊥ are intrinsic.
Suppression of Hadroproduction in Nuclei
1994
We argue that nuclei are not transparent for fast projectile partons. Color transparency is effective for final state interactions in heavy particle production, though nuclear filtering of initial partons can reduce the cross sections. We show that short-ranged initial state interactions, which have been neglected so far, can be important in hadroproduction on nuclei. With the present scenario of hadroproduction a qualitative description of data can be obtained.
Determination of Pyrrole Derivatives and Hydroxyproline with 4-(Dimethylamino)benzaldehyde in a Micellar Medium
1994
Abstract The spectrophotometric determination of pyrrole derivatives and hydroxyproline with 4-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde (Ehrlich's reagent) in a sodium dodecyl sulphate micellar medium is studied. Pyrrole and pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid were used as model compounds for the optimization of the procedure. In the micellar medium with 0.2 M HCl at 90° C, pyrrole reacts in 15 min, whereas a HCl concentration larger than 5 M is required in the absence of the surfactant. The sensitivity increases from 1.3 to 5.6-fold with respect to the use of a non-micellar medium, for some pyrrole derivatives. The procedure is applied to the determination of hydroxyproline in meat samples.
