Early Seizures After Acute Stroke: A Study of 1,640 Cases

We evaluated prospectively the occurrence of seizures within 15 days of a first stroke or transient ischemic episode in 1,640 patients to study relation between seizures and type of stroke. Seizures occurred in 90 patients (5.4%), including 36 (4.4%) of 814 with infarct owing to atheroma, 21 (16.6%) of 126 with infarct owing to cardiogenic embolus, 3 (1%) of 273 owing to lacunar infarct, 5 (1.9%) of 259 owing to transient ischemic attack (TIA), 21 (16.2%) of 129 owing to supratentorial hematoma, and 4 (16.6%) of 24 owing to subarachnoid hemorrhage. Abstract The determination of caffeine by UV spectroscopy in pharmaceutical samples, containing different compounds which provide spectral interferences as aspirin, paracetamol, chlorfeniramine or propylphenazone, is carried out. The proposed procedure is based on the apparent content curves method in order to resolve binary, ternary and multicomponent mixtures. Results obtained are, in all cases, in agreement with contents found by a HPLC procedure used as reference method.

Electromagnetic and nuclear fission of238U in the reaction of 100, 500, and 1000 A�MeV208Pb with238U

The folding- and azimuthal-angle and velocity distributions for the238U fission fragments have been measured in reactions with 100, 500, and 1000 A·MeV208Pb. These distributions were used to decompose the fission cross section into its electromagnetic and nuclear components. The fraction of electromagnetic fission was found to be 0.16±0.07, 0.48±0.08, and 0.60±0.04, respectively. The electromagnetic fission cross section as a function of the208Pb nucleus energy is compared with theoretical predictions. The measured fission cross section from nuclear reactions (≈1.5 b) is approximately constant between 100 and 1000 A·MeV.

Starting from a realistic One-Boson-Exchange model of the nucleon nucleon interaction the relativistic mean field for nucleons is determined within the Dirac Brueckner Hartree Fock approach for finite nuclei. The matrix elements of the axial charge operator evaluated for the solutions of the Dirac equation with this selfenergy are investigated. Compton scattering by a pion and off-shell effects

We consider Compton scattering by a pion in the framework of chiral perturbation theory. We investigate off--shell effects in the s-- and u--channel pole diagrams. For that purpose we perform a field transformation which, in comparison with the standard Gasser and Leutwyler Lagrangian, generates additional terms at order $p^4$ proportional to the lowest--order equation of motion. As a result of the equivalence theorem the two Lagrangians predict the same Compton scattering S--matrix even though they generate different off--shell form factors. We conclude that off--shell effects are not only model--dependent but also representation--dependent.

Enhanced spectrophotometric determination of nicotinic acid in a sodium dodecyl sulphate micellar medium.

The spectrophotometric determination of pyridine and pyridine derivatives by means of the König reaction was studied in micellar media of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), N-cetylpyridinium chloride and Triton X-100. The sensitivity was largely increased in SDS micellar medium. The attack of the pyridine ring with cyanogen bromide to produce a glutaconic aldehyde was not affected by the presence of SDS, but the yield of the coupling reaction with an arylamine to produce a polymethine dye was largely increased. The ability to obtain iron of 14 isolates of Vibrio damsela with different degrees of virulence for mice and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) has been evaluated in artificial and natural iron-restricted environments. All strains were capable of utilizing haemoglobin (Hb) and ferric ammonium citrate (FAC) as the sole iron sources in vitro. However, only virulent V. damsela strains were able to resist the bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects of human and turbot sera, their growth being enhanced by the addition of Hb and FAC. Iliac crest biopsies are important in the detection of human skeletal dysplasias. Therefore, culture of these cells may serve as a valuable method for studying proteoglycan metabolism in chondrocytes of individuals with skeletal abnormalities. Morphological and biochemical studies were performed on human iliac crest chondrocytes grown in monolayer and in agarose gels. Two proteoglycan populations of different hydrodynamic size and glycosaminoglycan composition were synthesized by cells grown in monolayer. Annealed organic monolayers of dodecanethiol (CH3(CH2)11SH) self-assembled on Au(111) have been investigated by scanning tunnelling microscopy. By using very high tunnelling resistances (TOMEGA) we find evidence of well-ordered molecular domains at room temperature and observe two different types of c(4 x 2) superlattice structures with the same rectangular unit cell. In contrast to theoretical calculations each unit cell contains four inequivalent molecules. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed.

Determination of90Sr in environmental samples with resonance ionization spectroscopy in collinear geometry

A new, fast technique for trace analysis of the radioactive isotopes89Sr and90Sr in environmental samples has been developed. Conventional mass separation is combined with resonance ionization spectroscopy in collinear geometry, which provides high selectivity and sensitivity. In addition, a chemical separation procedure for sample preparation has been developed. The described technique was used to determine the90Sr content in ≈ 870 m3 air samples collected near Munich during and shortly after the Chernobyl reactor accident in April 1986. Continuum Monte Carlo simulation of phase transitions in rod-like molecules at surfaces

Stiff rod-like chain molecules with harmonic bond length potentials and trigonometric bond angle potentials are used to model Langmuir monolayers at high densities. One end of the rod-like molecules is strongly bound to a flat two-dimensional substrate which represents the air-water interface. The morphological changes in rat facial muscles were evaluated after permanent denervation and were compared with findings after immediate reinnervation. Thirty rats underwent transection of the left and right facial nerves immediately followed by hypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis on the right side (muscular reinnervation) and removal of 8-10 mm of the facial plexus on the left side (permanent muscular denervation). At the incommensurate-ferroelectric transition temperature T c of K 2 ZnCl 4 , the dielectric susceptibility contains an anomalous contribution both above and below T c . Previous quasi-static dielectric measurements and hysteresis loops demonstrated that this anomalous part arises from the peculiar dynamics of discommensurations. We have used isothermal dielectric measurements to get some insight into the long time dynamics of these discommensurations. We have found that the characteristic relaxation times τ are of the order of 10 4 s in the incommensurate and in the ferroelectric phase. A limiting-dilution assay was developed and used to determine the frequency of autologous tumor-reactive cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) in peripheral blood of a melanoma patient MZ2, who has been free of detectable disease since several years. In this patient, the frequencies of tumor-reactive CTL spontaneously varied only by a factor of 1.5. After vaccinations with autologous mutagenized and lethally irradiated tumor cells a two- to tenfold increase in frequencies of tumor-reactive CTL was found within the first 2 weeks. The 1H NMR spectra of 64 polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PCDEs) were measured and assigned. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to estimate the effects of chlorine atoms on the 1H NMR chemical shifts and coupling constants. The ‘simple sum rules’ were found to be inadequate for the prediction of 1H NMR chemical shifts of PCDEs. Therefore, corrective terms of two chlorine atoms were taken into account. An automated column-switching method coupled to isocratic high-performance liquid chromatography has been developed for simultaneous determination of blood levels of paroxetine and its nonconjugated main metabolite BRL 36610.
