Itsemurha suomalaisessa yhteiskunnassa
1994
This study will examine the history of suicide in Finnish society. The approach to the problem will be through an examination of the legislation concerning suicide, of popular - beliefs, the attitude of the Church to suicide, the measures taken by officials, and the opinions on suicide during the 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th century, with its concomitant factors: facts, attitudes and norms' The questions is one of how the problem posed by suicide was treated and experienced. The study will also treat the facts regarded as being at the background of the suicides. The principal source for the study is a body of statistics, on the surface exact and accurate, but in fact containin…
Luxación posterior bilateral de la articulación escapulohumeral
1994
A case of bilateral posterior dislocation of the scapulo-humeral joint ocurring in a 51-year-old men after a convulsive attack is reported. Inmediately after convulsions, the patient refered pain and funtional disability in both shoulders and bilateral scapulo-humeral dislocation was confirmed by conventional r…

Population dynamics and ecology of subdominant phytoplankton species in a shallow hypertrophic lake (Albufera of Valencia, Spain)
1994
Long-term population dynamics and ecology of the abundant but non-dominant phytoplankton species of the shallow hypertrophic lake the Albufera of Valencia (Spain) are described for the period 1980–1988. The lake is used as a reservoir for the surrounding ricefield cultivation. It is continuously dominated by three filamentous blue-green algae, Planktothrix agardhii, Pseudanabaena galeata and Geitlerinema sp. Horizontal differences of the phytoplankton were less important than annual and seasonal variations. An annual increasing trend was observed for Planktolyngbya subtilis, Planktolyngbya contorta, Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, Microcystis incerta, Nitzschia palea var. tenuirostris and R…
Learning Motivation and Activity Contexts
1994
Abstract Learning motivation has a special explanatory status in educational psychology and educational practice. Motivation and learning often are studied separately. In the achievement motivation tradition, achievement situation is the connecting link between learning process and achievement need. The explanatory power of this link has limitations. The activity concept is proposed as a unit which is able to offer a broader basis for a unified concept of learning motivation.
Phosphorylation of an Overexpressed Yeast Ras2 Protein During the G1 Phase of the Cell Cycle
1994
RAS proteins regulate growth and differentiation in evolutionarily distant systems such as vertebrates and yeast (for reviews, see Tamanoi, 1988; Gibbs and Marshall, 1989; Broach and Deschenes, 1990). At the moleular level, a key function of the yeast RAS1 and RAS2 proteins (collectively referred to as RAS) is to positively regulate the production of cyclic AMP at the onset of the G1 phase of the cell cycle (Toda et al., 1985; De Vendittis et al., 1986). At this stage, RAS proteins are transiently activated by the noncovalent binding of a GTP molecule. Reversal of the effect occurs by the hydrolytic splitting of the ’γ-phosphate of GTP, that leaves a functionally inactive RASGDP complex, th…
Complex, energy-independent, local potential reproducing an absorptive phase shift and a bound state
1994
The triton binding energy, and the partly real and partly complex neutron-deuteron doublet channel elastic scattering phase shifts, calculated by means of the exact three-body theory, are used as input in the fixed-[ital l] inverse scattering theory of Marchenko. The local potentials obtained hereby are independent of energy, and complex. Their strong imaginary part reflects the strong absorption in the doublet channel arising from the opening of the deuteron breakup channel. For total orbital angular momentum [ital l] different from zero the potentials are unique, reproducing the input phase shift in the whole energy region. For [ital l]=0 where there exists, in addition, a bound state we …

Proton-induced deuteron breakup reaction2H(p, pp)n
1994
The “screening and renormalization” approach allows for a mathematically correct incorporation, in three-body scattering theory, of the long-ranged Coulomb interaction between charged particles. It is based on first calculating the transition amplitudes using screened Coulomb potentials. Then, after renormalization the zero-screening limit, leading to the amplitudes pertaining to unscreened Coulomb potentials, is performed numerically. Within this formalism the proton-induced breakup of deuterons is investigated, with the Coulomb repulsion between the two protons taken into account. Kinematically complete differential cross sections in various kinematic configurations are calculated and com…

Topological confinement in QCD2
1994
In two dimensional SU(N) theories confinement can be understood as a topological property of the vacuum. In the bosonized version of two dimensional theories no trivial boundary conditions (topology) play a crucial role. They are inevitable if one wants to describe non singlet states. In abelian bosonization, color is the charge of a topological current in terms of a non-linear meson field. We show that cofinement appears as the dynamical collapse of the topology associated with its non trivial boundary conditions. Vento Torres, Vicente, Vicente.Vento@ific.uv.es
Extraction of Enzymes from Tissues, Cells and Cell-Organelles
1994
Microorganisms, such as bacteria, algae, moulds and others, are ruptured by sonication, by passage through a French press [1, 2] (Fig. 2.1) or a Manton-Gaulin homogenizer [3], by blending with glass beads [4], or by digesting the cell walls enzymically [5]. Extract preparation is preferably performed in the cold (+4 °C).
Energy Dependence of Collective Flow of Neutrons and Charged Particles in 197AU + 197AU Collisions
1994
Collective flow of nuclear matter is one important aspect of the research performed at heavy ion accelerator laboratories. The phenomenon was predicted on the basis of hydrodynamical calculations [1], and experimental evidence was first presented for the systems 93 Nb + 93 Nb and 197 Au + 197 Au in the projectile energy range between 150 and 1050 MeV/u [2]. The comparison to microscopic calculations shows that nuclear matter is compressed to about two to three times the ground state density and that a substantial fraction of the kinetic energy in the entrance channel is converted into compressional energy [3]. In these calculations, the relation between density and compressional energy depe…
Sterols and Steroids
1994
Sterols and steroids, like the terpenes and carotinoids, are isoprene derivatives. The sterols are components of the membranes of all eukaryotic cells and they bind and condense the phospholipid bilayer. The outer cell membrane is particularly rich in sterols, with a molar ratio of sterols to phospholipids of 0.8–0.1, compared with the usual value of 0.1–0.3 for intracellular membranes. The parent substance of all sterols is cholesterol (Fig. 16.1). The sterols are classified with the steroid hormones and bile salts as steroids because they also have the gonan (formerly steran) four-ring system and have their biosynthetic origin in cholesterol. Steroids with hormonal functions are known fro…

Théorie de système et séries temporelles

The aim of this paper is to present a different representation of state space models, (innovation state space representation) which is relatively new and apparently unknown in the economics and econometrics literature and to describe some of its properties. state space representation is a very flexible form for time series and the approach taken in this paper therefore allows a broad class of models it does not impose a priori the decomposition of data series into trend and cycle
Esa ruda flor de cactus
1994
This article deals with two perplexing questions that arise from the viewing of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (John Ford, 1962): the use of flashback and the presence of nostalgia, an emotion foreign to epic poetry. 7he first points to the existence of a mythical past estranged from the present, from which civilization arises and which is symbolized by the train which makes its appearance at the beginning and the end of the film. Nostalgia introduces a painful note in the present-day characters which may be defined both as old-age in a physical sense and the fact that they belong to another, legendary world. We show how these two elements converge in the splendid metaphor of the cactus fl…

Incorporation of specific wall proteins during yeast and mycelial protoplast regeneration in Candida albicans
1994
The kinectics of incorporation of two precursor mannoproteins into the regenerating cell wall of Candida albicans protoplasts have been followed at 28°C and 37°C using two monoclonal antibodies specific for protein epitopes (MAb 1B12 and 4C12) as probes. Both molecules were secreted from the beginning of the regeneration process, and their incorporation was retarded significantly. Analysis of the secreted materials by Western immunoblotting with MAb 1B12 allowed the identification of two closely migrating bands at apparent Mr higher than 170 kDa and significant amounts of a highly polydisperse material of even greater molecular mass. Some of these mannoproteinaceous species carried both N- …

Surface properties of iron-titania photocatalysts employed for 4-nitrophenol photodegradation in aqueous TiO2 dispersion
1994
Iron(III) doped specimens (0.01–5% atomic Fe ∶ Ti) have been prepared by impregnating polycrystalline “home prepared” TiO2 (mainly anatase) and have been studied for photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol in aqueous dispersions. Some structural and surface properties have been studied by X-ray diffraction, specific surface area and porosity measurements and FTIR monitoring of pyridine, ammonia and methanoic acid adsorption for surface acidity and basicity. Their surface properties were compared with a corresponding series of photocatalysts prepared by a coprecipitation method. Adsorption of pyridine and ammonia indicates the presence of surface acid Lewis sites, a low concentration of …
Co-learnability and FIN-identifiability of enumerable classes of total recursive functions
1994
Co-learnability is an inference process where instead of producing the final result, the strategy produces all the natural numbers but one, and the omitted number is an encoding of the correct result. It has been proved in [1] that co-learnability of Goedel numbers is equivalent to EX-identifiability. We consider co-learnability of indices in recursively enumerable (r.e.) numberings. The power of co-learnability depends on the numberings used. Every r.e. class of total recursive functions is co-learnable in some r.e. numbering. FIN-identifiable classes are co-learnable in all r.e. numberings, and classes containing a function being accumulation point are not co-learnable in some r.e. number…

The Proton Bohr Factor of Native and Crosslinker Treated Hemoglobins - Its Possible Significance for the Efficacy of Hemoglobin Based Artificial Oxyg…
1994
Especially the (alkaline) proton Bohr effect seems to provide an important self regulating mechanism of the organism to deliver specifically oxygen into tissues suffering from O2 deficit. In this way these tissues switch from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism, get lactacid, thereby shifting oxygen hemoglobin binding curve to the right and thus facilitating the oxygen release. The higher the absolute value of the proton Bohr factor (: delta logP50/ delta pH) is the better this mechanism works. To get one characteristic number the proton Bohr factor at pH 7.1 is taken. This pH in blood is about a lower limit for organism and human blood has at this pH its maximum proton Bohr factor which is abo…
