Tests of Linearity, Multivariate Normality and the Adequacy of Linear Scores

After some discussion of the purposes of testing multivariate normality, the paper concentrates on two different approaches to testing linearity: on repeated regression tests of non-linearity and on exploiting properties of a dichotomized normal distribution. Regression tests of linearity are used to examine the adequacy of linear scoring systems for explanatory variables, initially recorded on an ordinal scale. Examples from recent psychological and medical research are given in which the methods have led to some insight into subject-matter.

This paper reviews the basic concepts related to notions of variation and functional variation, in particular register, and it questions whether these concepts have been taken into account by the lexicographic tradition. The paper focuses on which are the most suitable marks to recognize several aspects connected with the usage of lexical items: on the one hand the field (topic), the mode (channel), the tenor (purpose), and the tone (formality), as the register’ s components; and on the other hand, various factors concerning cultural, enunciative, and textual grounds.

Long-term phytoplankton changes in a shallow hypertrophic lake, Albufera of Valencia (Spain)

A long-term phytoplankton study was carried out in the Albufera of Valencia, a shallow hypertrophic lake (surface area 21 km2, mean depth 1 m, total inorganic nitrogen load 155 g m-2 y-1, total inorganic phosphate load 15 g m-2 y-1) from 1980 to 1988. The lake functions as a reservoir for the surrounding rice cultivation. From 1940's to 1988, its phytoplankton assemblage has been altered from a mesotrophic to a hypertrophic character, as consequence of the increasing pollution. For 1980–88, annual variations in the phytoplankton were less pronounced than seasonal changes. Psychosocial stress, catecholamines, and essential fatty acid metabolism in rats.

To examine the effects of psychosocial stress and the "stress hormone," epinephrine, on essential fatty acid metabolism in rats, two studies were conducted. In the first, the effects of four weeks of (i) social isolation and (ii) group housing (control) on liver microsomal delta 6 and delta 5 n-6 desaturase activity were studied in group-reared male normotensive (Wistar Kyoto) and spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) rats (n = 5/group). VLBI Observations of Radio Galaxies

We undertook a project of observation of a complete sample of radio galaxies with the VLBI technique, in order to test: a) current models on jet dynamics and b) the radio source unified schemes. A preliminary analysis based on the data obtained by us for 10 galaxies of our sample indicates that the parsec scale structure in low power radio galaxies (FR-I) and high power radio galaxies (FR-II) is essentially the same.

Optimality Conditions for Non-Qualified Parabolic Control Problems

We consider parabolic state constrained optimal control problems where the usual Slater condition is not necessarily satisfied. Instead, a weaker interiority property is assumed. Optimality conditions with a Lagrange multiplier are given. As an application we present an augmented Lagrangian algorithm. Numerical test results are included.

Ante la incapacidad de regeneración espontánea de lesiones profundas y amplias del cartílago articular, estudiamos la reparación cartilaginosa con plastias de pericondrio tomadas de la región condro-costal e implantándolas con su cara condrogénica sobre una lesión osteocondral realizada en la superficie articular rotuliana. Macroscópica e histológicamente, a la octava semana, el neocartílago formado tenía igual apariencia que el cartílago hialino normal, no existiendo separación entre el cartílago remanente y el neoformado a partir de la plastia. Neuron-Glial Interaction During Injury and Edema of the CNS

During injury and ischemia of the CNS mediator compounds are released or activated which cause secondary swelling and damage of nerve cells. Such mediators are glutamate, acidosis, free fatty acids, or high extracellular potassium. Glial homeostatic mechanisms are activated to prevent the secondary injury from these mediators. The glial clearance mechanisms have been studied in detail using in vitro systems allowing for a close control of the glial environment. Current evidence suggests glial swelling to occur together with glutamate uptake or in response to extracellular acidosis. Glial swelling, therefore, is rather the result of homeostatic mechanisms than an indication of glial demise.

As a starting point we take the real needs of the present language users, specially those professionals of linguistic Services, in order to get a clear picture of which of their needs could be satisfied by a general language dictionary and which by a normative dictionary. The vagueness of the concept «normativity» is pointed out and the opinion is expressed that it is not easy to define in a precise way which of the needs mentioned ought to be the subject of normativity. The article concludes with a series of concrete examples which illustrate the concepts presented.

Revisamos 25 prótesis totales de rodilla semiconstreñidas tipo Endo-Model Waldemar- Link implantadas en 23 pacientes con una edad media de 69,5 años y un seguimiento medio de 32 meses. Para la evaluación de los resultados clínicos hemos utilizado el protocolo de la Academia Americana en el que se incluyen los parámetros de: dolor, capacidad para la marcha, facilidad para subir y bajar escaleras, necesidad o no de bastones y flexoextensión de la articulación, tanto antes como después de la intervención.
