Heavy-mesons exchange and the backward deuteron electrodisintegration

Backward electrodisintegration of the deuteron is calculated using an exchange-current operator containing π, η, ρ, ω, δ, σ, andA1 exchanges. The deuteron and1S0np wave functions are derived from the Bonn OBEPs. For completeness, we introduced theA1-meson exchange into the OBEP's as well. As a consequence, the value ofD-state probabilityPD is increased by 0.2%–0.8%. The computed cross sections are compared with new data.
Theoretical determination of the geometric and electronic structures of oligorylenes and poli(peri‐naphthalene)

We present a theoretical investigation of the electronic structure of oligorylenes (from perylene to heptarylene, including also the naphthalene molecule) and their corresponding polymer poly(peri‐naphthalene) (PPN) using the nonempirical valence effective (VEH) method. The geometry of the unit cell used to generate the polymer is extrapolated from the PM3‐optimized molecular geometries of the longest oligorylenes. That geometry shows some bond alternation along the perimeter carbon chains and a bond length of ≊1.46 Å is calculated for the peri bonds connecting the naphthalene units. The Capacitated Arc Routing Problem: Lower bounds

In this paper, we consider the Capacitated Arc Routing Problem (CARP), in which a fleet of vehicles, based on a specified vertex (the depot) and with a known capacity Q, must service a subset of the edges of a graph, with minimum total cost and such that the load assigned to each vehicle does not exceed its capacity. New lower bounds are developed for this problem, producing at least as good results as the already existing ones. Three of the proposed lower bounds are obtained from the resolution of a minimum cost perfect matching problem. A new method for the study of antiparallel ferroelectric domains

Abstract Beam-coupling topography is a non-destructive holographic technique for spatially resolved recording of hysteresis loops and for imaging of domains. Its basic principle is interference of rays diffracted from a holographic grating with collinear, transmitted ones. Full domain contrast and noise suppression is achieved by appropriate control of intensity and phase of the interfering beams. The method is applied to antiparallel a-domains in (Sr0.61Ba0.39)Nb2O6:Ce.

A fetus with mucopolysaccharidosis type IV A (Morquio type A) is described. The family had one affected child exhibiting symptoms of classical Morquio A disease, and late in the subsequent pregnancy prenatal diagnosis was requested. At 23 weeks' gestation, moderate ascites was detected by detailed ultrasound scan and keratan sulphate was found in the amniotic fluid. The pregnancy was terminated by prostaglandin induction and the diagnosis of mucopolysaccharidosis type IV A was confirmed by demonstration of a deficiency of N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulphate (GalNac-6-S) sulphatase in cultured amniotic cells and in post-mortem fibroblast cultures. The formalism of many-particle densities developed earlier by the authors is applied to the study of the self-organization phenomena occuring during the course of the bimolecular A + B → 0 reaction between charged particles, interacting via the Coulomb law. Unlike the Debye-Huckel theory, charge screening has an essentially non-equilibrium character. It is shown that for the asymmetric mobility of reactants (DA = 0, DB ≠ 0) similar immobile reactants A form aggregates characterized by a sharp maximum, observed at short distances, in the joint correlation function XA(r, t). Abstract An automated procedure has been developed for the determination of formetanate and its metabolite m -aminophenol (MAP) in water samples. MAP can be selectively determined in the presence of formetanate by direct on-line reaction with p -aminophenol and spectrophotometric measurement of the absorbance at 576 nm in the presence of KIO 4 , as oxidizing agent. The method has a limit of detection of 5 × 10 −7 M , it provides a recovery percentage from 95 to 104% and permits one to carry out 120 measurements/hr. Crystal excitation: survey of many-electron Hartree-Fock calculations of self-trapped excitons in insulating crystals

To model successfully the diversity of electronic structure exhibited by excitons in alkali halides and in oxide materials, it is necessary to use a variety or combination of theoretical methods. In this review we restrict our discussion to the results of embedded quantum cluster calculations. By considering the results of such studies, it is possible to recognize the general similarities and differences in detail between the various exciton models in these materials.
Circular dichroism in x-ray photoemission from core levels of nonmagnetic species

Circular dichroism in the angular distribution of photoelectrons (CDAD) has been observed in core-level photoemission from spherically symmetric initial states of nonmagnetic species utilizing circularly polarized soft-x-ray radiation from BESSY. Up to now, CDAD was predicted and observed only for aligned initial states. The data for oriented CO molecules prove that circular x-ray dichroism in photoemission from core levels is a general phenomenon that is not restricted to ferromagnets. High asymmetries of 50% suggest future applications as an effective circular x-ray analyzer.
Shell structure in large nonspherical metal clusters.

Electronic shell structure of icosahedral and cuboctahedral sodium clusters with 300 to 1500 atoms has been studied using a potential-well approximation for the effective one-electron potential. The results show that icosahedral clusters yield the same shell structure as spherical clusters up to the cluster size of about 500 atoms and that similarities persist until the cluster has about 1000 atoms. The shell structure of a cuboctahedral geometry begins to deviate from that of a sphere when the cluster size is about 100. A study on quadrupole deformations of large clusters shows that surface fluctuations in liquid clusters cannot destroy the shell structure even in the largest clusters.
Theoretical study of the low‐lying states of trans‐1,3‐butadiene

We present extensive ab initio calculations on the low‐lying electronic states of trans‐1,3‐butadiene within the multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) framework by selecting the configurations with a perturbative criterion. The X 1Ag ground state and 1 3Bu, 1 3Ag, 2 1Ag, and 1 1Bu valence excited states have been calculated at a fixed geometry. The results obtained are in good agreement with previous experimental and calculated values, and could help to understand polyene spectroscopy, photochemistry, and photophysics. Colorimetric quantitation of trace amounts of sodium lauryl sulfate in the presence of nucleic acids and proteins

A fast and sensitive procedure for the colorimetric detection of sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS) is presented. The assay is based upon the formation of a chloroform-extractable ion pair between lauryl sulfate and methylene blue that is quantified spectrophotometrically with an estimated detection limit of 150 ng of SDS. The method is suitable for the monitoring of contaminating traces of SDS in protein or nucleic acid samples that have the potential to interfere with enzymatic manipulations such as proteolytic digest, restriction analysis, or reverse transcription. We describe a method for the in situ detection of specific splicing variants. The method is based on the use of antisense oligonucleotides designed to span splice junctions labelled with digoxigenin by terminal transferase tailing. We find that the spatial patterns of Ubx splicing variants Ia and IIa are similar in early embryos, but differ in late embryos. Variant IVa is only detected in the CNS (ps6) at stages 16 and 17. We also present evidence indicating that the first splicing event is cotranscriptional.
Noradrenaline release from permeabilized synaptosomes is inhibited by the light chain of tetanus toxin

AbstractNoradrenaline release from rat brain cortical synaptosomes permeabilized with streptolysin O can be triggered by μM concentrations of free Ca2+. This process was inhibited within minutes by tetanus toxin and its isolated light chain, but not by its heavy chain. The data demonstrate that the effect of tetanus toxin on NA release from purified synaptosomes is caused by the intraterminal action of its light chain.
Improved sample preparation for the testosterone hydroxylation assay using disposable extraction columns

The preparation of samples for injection into a high-performance liquid chromatograph from assay mixtures for the determination of cytochrome P-450-dependent testosterone hydroxylation has been substantially facilitated. By replacing the multiple cumbersome extraction steps of the conventional method with a single column extraction the time for sample preparation was reduced from hours to minutes. The new procedure also yields better recoveries for most of the testosterone metabolites than the original protocol. Two dimensional massless Quantum Chromodynamics presents many features which resemble those of the true theory. In particular the spectrum consists of mesons and baryons arranged in flavor multiplets without parity doubling. We analyze the implications of chiral symmetry, which is not spontaneously broken in two dimensions, in the spectrum and in the quark condensate. We study how parity doubling, an awaited consequence of Coleman's theorem, is avoided due to the dimensionality of space-time and confinement. We prove that a chiral phase transition is not possible in the theory.
Pionic effects in deep inelastic scattering off nuclei

The structure functions calculated in the Chiral bag model reproduce quite well, after appropriate perturbative evolution to large energy scales, the experimental data. We use these results to interpret the structure of the $EMC$ data as a quenching of the pion decay constant due to the in medium behavior of the nucleon. This explanation supports recent proposals of this phenomenon whose origin is the scale invariance of the $QCD$ lagrangian.
Apodization of imaging systems by means of a random spatially nonstationary absorbing screen

The amplitude impulse response (AIR) of coherent imaging systems with random binary apodizers is analyzed. Formulas for the mean value and the variance of the AIR are derived for two statistical one-dimensional models of apodizers: (1) nonuniform low-density shot noise and (2) a nonuniform unipolar synchronous random process. We show that for both models a high signal-to-noise ratio is achieved within the central peak and the low-order sidelobes of the AIR. Apodizers based on the second model permit higher values of the signal-to-noise ratio than those based on the first one.
Effect of sodium loading (3% NaCl) on arachidonic acid biosynthesis in rat liver microsomes

Sodium loading increases arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism by way of the prostaglandins(PGs) from series 2. Its effect on AA biosynthesis remains unknown. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of sodium loading on the fatty acid composition of liver and liver microsomes, and the liver microsomal delta-6 and delta-5 desaturations of linoleic acid (LA) into AA. We found a decrease of LA and dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) levels in liver total lipids of Wistar rats receiving hypernatriuretic drinking water (NaCl 3%) for 60 days. Abstract We have investigated hysteresis curves of silicon-stabilized Fe(100) and Fe(110) crystals using Polarized Secondary Electron Emission (PSEE) for surface magnetization processes and Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) for bulk hysteresis curves. In particular, the influence of adsorbates (oxygen and sulphur) and surface roughness on the magnetization reversal has been studied. For surface hysteresis curves we found adsorbate-induced reductions of coercive force of up to 50%; the bulk hysteresis curves showed significantly smaller deviations. Abstract In this randomized double-blind, placebo controlled, multicentre study on 108 elderly patients with mild to moderate mental deterioration of vascular origin, idebenone — a benzoquinone derivative with a hydroxyalkyl side chain — proved to be therapeutically effective in the treatment of multi-infarct dementia. The oral administration of idebenone 45 mg/day b.i.d. for 120 days significantly improved the scores of the following test in comparison with placebo: Mini Mental State, Randt Memory Test, Gottfries Rating Scale, Token Test, Toulouse Pieron Test, indicating improvements in memory attention and cognitivity. The effects of humoral and cell-mediated immunity on the glycosaminoglycan synthesis of retrobulbar fibroblasts was evaluated in patients with endocrine ophthalmopathy. Abstract Palaeomagnetic results from fourteen sites (56 samples) in the late Precambrian Chela Group of southwest Angola are reported. After alternating field demagnetization eight of the sites have mean directions closely grouped around D = 123°, I = −44 1 2 ° ; the dispersion of these directions increases substantially after tectonic corrections suggesting magnetic overprinting. Intensive thermal demagnetization proved more effective than alternating field demagnetization in resolving magnetic components. Abstract We have determined ratios of branching ratios for p p annihilations at rest into π0η and π0η′, into ηη and ηη′, and into ωη and ωη′. All reactins are observed in two different all-neutral final states. The ratios permit a determination of the pseudoscalar mixing angle. We find ΘPS = −(17.3±1.8)°.
