Female relatedness and microtine population dynamics: experience from cyclic populations

1993

Charnov & Finerty's (1980) hypothesis of the impact of relatedness between individuals on the multiannual fluctuations of microtine populations (cyclicity) has initiated a number of field experiments in the Holarctic region (Kawata 1987; Boonstra & Hogg 1988, Ylönen, et al. 1990). During recent years, the Charnov-Finerty hypothesis has been shown to be insufficient in explaining population cycles (e.g. Kawata 1990, Pugh & Tamarin 1990, Stenseth & Lomnicki 1990). Lambin & Krebs (1991) presented a new general model for all microtines of the impact of relatedness on the population fluctuations. In the present paper we go through some of the assumptions of the Lambin-Krebs model about the forma…

Biologic relevance of elevated red cell adenosine deaminase activity in myelodysplastic syndromes and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria.

1992

Red cell adenosine deaminase (ADA-RBC) activity in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria is significantly increased compared to that observed in normal controls. ADA-RBC activity is not related to fetal hemoglobin concentration, but it is significantly correlated with hemoglobin concentration at diagnosis and with the degree of morphologic dysplasia in the erythroid lineage. The results of our study suggest that the observed enzymatic abnormality may constitute a non-specific manifestation of the stem cell alteration that determines these disorders.

Descriptive Epidemiology of Stomach Cancer in Ragusa, Sicily, 1981–1988

1992

An epidemiologic study was carried out on 475 incident cases of gastric cancer registered by the Ragusa Cancer Registry (Sicily) between 1981 and 1988. Distribution by sex, age, subsite, year of incidence, and survival was investigated. A reduction of incidence and mortality between 1981–84 and 1985–88 was observed in both sexes, and was more evident in males than in females. Survival was not significantly different for cancers of the various subsites.

Competence of blastomeres for the expression of molecular tissue markers is acquired by diverse mechanisms in the embryo of Platynereis (Annelida)

1992

This paper is devoted to the role of cell divisions for the establishment of histospecificity in the embryo of the spiralian, Platynereis dumerilii (Annelida). We have incubated successive cleavage stages in cytochalasin B (CCB) and observed whether the cells thereafter were able to acquire the competence for expressing histospecific antigens of larval gland cells (labelled by the monoclonal antibody OI64) and of neural components of the ventral nerve cord (labelled by mAb OI7 or by testing acety1cholinesterase activity), respectively. Incubation in CCB results in permanent cleavage arrest, but does not necessarily interfere with biochemical differentiation of such markers. Synthesis of the…

Molecular specification of cell lines in the embryo of Platynereis (Annelida)

1992

In this study we describe the site and moment of histospecific differentiation in developmental stages of the annelid Platynereis dumerilii by use of biochemical markers. The monoclonal antibody (mab) OI7 and uncloned hybridoma supernatants (pAb's) OI8, OI10, OI46 and OI69 recognize neural antigens that appear asynchronously during development. By an enzymatic test, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was found specific for nervous tissue as well. The patterns of neural structures labelled by antibodies differ, however, from those revealed by AChE staining. Experimental inhibition of transcription (with actinomycin D) and of translation (using puromycin) demonstrate that the expression of histospec…

La reserva de semillas en una cuenca de "badlands" (Petrer, Alicante)

1992

In order to determine the influence of erosion in the absence of vegetation of badlands slopes, the seed content of the regolith and the seed removal by runoff in five storms were analyzed in an experimental catchment at Petrer (Alicante). Both, seed redistribution and seed loss were detected, but these seem to be insufficient to explain the lack of vegetation. It is hypothesized that besides the erosion process, factors such as pedoclimate, and chemical and physical properties of the regolith should be considered.

Spectral Functions for Heavy-Light Currents and Form Factor Relations in Hqet

1992

We derive relations among form factors describing the current-induced transitions: (vacuum) $\rightarrow B,B^{*}, B \pi, B^{*} \pi, B \rho$ and $B^{*} \rho$ using heavy quark symmetry. The results are compared to corresponding form factor relations following from identities between scalar and axial vector, and pseudoscalar and vector spectral functions in the heavy quark limit.

THE OPERATOR PRODUCT EXPANSION OF THE QCD PROPAGATORS

1992

We bring together for the first time the coefficients in covariant gauges of all the condensates of dimension four or less in the operator product expansion (OPE) of the quark, gluon and ghost propagators. It is stressed that contrary to general belief the condensates do not enter the OPE of the propagators in gauge-invariant combinations like [Formula: see text] and 〈G2〉. The results are presented in arbitrary dimension to lowest order in the light quark masses for the SU (Nc) internal symmetry group. All terms which, through the equations of motion, may be viewed as being effectively of order αs are included. The importance of the equations of motion if one is to fulfill the Slavnov-Tayl…

Presence and coding properties of 2'-O-methyl-5-carbamoylmethyluridine (ncm5Um) in the wobble position of the anticodon of tRNA(Leu) (U*AA) from brew…

1992

AbstractThe unknown modified nucleoside U* has been isolated by enzymatic and HPLC protocols from tRNALeu(U*AA) recently discovered in brewer's yeast. The pure U* nucleoside has been characterized by electron impact mass spectroscopy, and comparison of its chromatographic and UV-absorption properties with those of appropriate synthetic compounds. The structure of U* was established as 2′-O-methyl-5-carbamoylmethyluridine (ncm5Um). The yeast tRNALeu (U*AA) is the only tRNA so far sequenced which has been shown to contain ncm5Um. The location of such a modified uridine at the first position of the anticodon restricts the decoding property to A of the leucine UUA codon.

LES VARIATIONS DU NIVEAU MARIN SUR LE BASSIN DE PARIS AU BATHONIEN-CALLOVIEN. IMPACTS SUR LES COMMUNAUTÉS BENTHIQUES ET SUR L'ÉVOLUTION DES ORNITHELL…

1992

The study deals with the biological impacts of sea-Ievel changes on evolution of a Jurassic benthic fossil group (Ornithellida, Brachiopoda). The different time and scale at which the shifts in marine environments occur leads to the recognition of three interacting dynamic systems: environmental, communities, populations dynamics. The analysis is thus divided into a three steps hierarchy: sequence stratigraphy, analysis of the diversity of brachiopod assemblages, and analysis of morphological variations within omithellid populations. Sequence stratigraphy of the Dogger marly and carbonate successions in the Paris basin provides accurate correlations of depositional environments from shallow…

Blends of polyamide 6 and bisphenol-A polycarbonate. Effects of interchange reactions on morphology and mechanical properties

1992

Blends of polyamide 6 (PA6) and polycarbonate (PC) were prepared in a Brabender mixer, at 240°C, applying long mixing time, for 45 min. It was observed that the morphology and the mechanical properties tend to resemble those of a homogeneous material as the mixing time and PA6 concentration increase. This is attributed to chemical reactions taking place between the two homopolymers. Acidolysis, amidolysis, and aminolysis, catalyzed by the terminals and the amide groups of the polyamide, should in principle be possible. Our results indicate that the aminolysis is the main process, inducing simultaneously scission of PC chains and formation of PC-PA6 copolymer chains. The latter act as interf…

Comparison of the anticonstrictor action of dihydropyridines (nimodipine and nicardipine) and Mg2+ in isolated human cerebral arteries.

1992

The isometric tension recorded from ring segments of branches of human middle cerebral artery was the parameter used to study the inhibition of spasmogen-induced contractions as model for cerebral vasospasm. Concentration-response curves to 5-hydroxytryptamine (10(-9)-3 x 10(-5) M) and prostaglandin F2 alpha (10(-7)-3 x 10(-5) M) were inhibited in Ca(2+)-free medium and in Ca(2+)-free medium to which EGTA (1 mM) had been added, respectively. Nimodipine (10(-7), 10(-5) M), nicardipine (10(-7), 10(-5) M) and Mg2+ (magnesium sulfate 10(-4), 10(-2) M) inhibited the 5-HT-elicited contractions, and this inhibition was similar for the highest concentrations tested. In contrast, nimodipine and nica…

Cancer-cell traffic in the liver. I. Growth kinetics of cancer cells after portal-vein delivery

1992

Following the intrasplenic injection of B16F10 melanoma cells into mice, at first single cells, and later multicellular tumor foci were observed at different times in the liver. Cell numbers and tumor volumes were determined over the next 12 days, by confocal microscopy of thick liver sections. Fifteen minutes after injection, approximately 20% of the melanoma cells were identified in the liver microvasculature; after 48 hr, only 0.68% of these retained morphologic integrity; by 5 days only 0.13% of the originally detected cells incorporated BUdR; and, by 12 days, these subsequently grew into tumor nodules. Tumor volume changes with time were not exponential and, following a non-replicative…

VATER/VACTERL association: clinical variability and expanding phenotype including laryngeal stenosis.

1992

Vertebral abnormalities and anorectal and tracheoesophageal defects are the main manifestations in the VATER/VACTERL association. Radial defects vary from radial aplasia to thumb duplication. Heart and renal defects are reported with lower frequency. Additional malformations, such as the laryngeal stenosis described in the present patient, may expand the phenotype of the association. The wide spectrum of congenital abnormalities confirms the high clinical variability of VATER/VACTERL association which seems to be due to a disruption of blastogenesis. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Thermodynamic studies of octyltrimethylammonium chloride in water

1992

Densities, heat capacities, enthalpies of dilution at 298 K and osmotic coefficients at 310 K of octyltrimethylammonium chloride were measured as functions of concentration. From the experimental data, the partial molar volumes, heat capacities, relative enthalpies, nonideal free energies and entropies at 298 K were derived as functions of concentration. A comparison between the above data and those of dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride reported in the literature shows that the increase of the alkyl chain length shifts the apparent molar volumevs. concentration curves towards greater values and the heat capacity, relative enthalpy and free energyvs. concentration curves towards smaller value…

Inducibility of the avidin gene by progesterone is suppressed during estrogen-induced cytodifferentiation.

1992

Abstract We have studied epithelial differentiation of the chick oviduct as induced by diethylstilbestrol (DES) and 17β-estradiol (E 2 ). The proportion of goblet cells in the oviduct was slightly higher after E 2 than after DES treatment. Also avidin induction by progesterone was stronger following DES than E 2 priming. In the estrogen pretreated oviduct epithelium, avidin expression was induced by progesterone in the surface epithelial cells, protodifferentiated gland cells and tubular gland cells, but not in goblet cells. During prolonged estrogen treatment, however, the inducibility of avidin by progesterone ceased in tubular gland cells but not in surface epithelial cells. The estrogen…
