New shape from Shading methods

1993

Shape from Shading is perhaps the most difficult topic to deal with in Artificial Vision: several researchers have faced it using different approaches. The most part of these methods are based on the Horn algorithm so they require very heavy regularity assumptions about the perceived objects' shape and are computationally expensive.

Diarrhoe bei 1337 Kindern der Universitätsklinik Mainz: Bedeutung von Salmonellen und Rotaviren

1993

In Germany, infectious diseases cause little mortality, but they are responsible for a large proportion of morbidity. In order to obtain data about the relevance of infectious diarrhea, the charts of 1337 outpatients, hospitalized for this disorder in the time between 1986-1989 at the Children's Hospital, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, were analyzed. Sixty-seven percent of patients were younger than one year. An offending organism could be isolated in 42.1% of patients, with Rotaviruses being the leading cause of diarrhea (415 cases), followed by Salmonella spp. (130 cases). Rotavirus-disease was mainly seen in winter, Salmonella-disease in late summer and in autumn. Severe courses of…

SOFT AND HARD ACIDITY IN ZEOLITES AND ZEOTYPES: EVALUATION AND CATALYTIC IMPLICATIONS

1993

It has been found by Molecular Orbital calculations, that the energy of the LUMO of a zeolite cluster can be used to measure the softness–hardness acidity. It has been found that the higher the framework Si/AI ratio the softer is the acidity. When applied to the alkylation of aromatics, it has been calculated that the higher the framework Si/AI ratio of the zeolite, the more “orbital controlled” will be the reaction, and therefore a higher para to ortho ratio is expected. This has been confirmed experimentally during the alkylation of toluene and m–xylene by methanol on HY zeolites with different framework Si/AI ratio.

The Coming Crisis in the Spanish Wine Industry

1993

It appears quite likely that the worldwide demand for wine has been declining for over a decade now. While a number of reasons for this changing consumer behaviour have been advanced, no one really knows what factors are driving this market downward. This changing demand structure has very serious implications for Spanish wine makers because the fastest decline in demand is at the low priced end of the market. That is exactly the part of the market where Spanish wine makers have their strongest position. Four endgame strategies available to Spanish wine makers are presented and analyzed. Finally, a four step action program is outlined that is intended to give Spanish makers their best chanc…

Special Program of Differentiation Expressed in Keratinocytes of Human Haarscheiben: An Analysis of Individual Cytokeratin Polypeptides

1993

Human haarscheiben, epidermal Merkel cell-rich sensory organs of hairy skin, were studied for the expression of various cytokeratin (CK) polypeptides and other epithelial and neuronal differentiation markers by applying immunoperoxidase and immunofluorescence microscopy to frozen sections and by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. The basal clusters of Merkel cells were specifically detected by antibodies against CK 20. Haarscheiben keratinocytes were unique mainly by the prominent expression of CK 17 in the lower and middle layers. Further differences as compared to keratinocytes of usual epidermis included the enlargement of the basal compartment, characterized by the expression of CK 5 …
