Multi- and single-locus probes recognizing highly polymorphic DNA sequences throughout the genome ([1–3]; C. Rittner, this volume) have become powerful tools for paternity testing and forensic stain analysis. In forensic casework, however, DNA probe technology can often not be applied, since genomic DNA extracted from stain material exposed to conditions of high temperatures and humidity is degraded. Also, the amount of DNA to be typed may not be sufficient to use DNA probe technology, e.g. if extracted from minute blood or sperm stains, from single hairs or from cell smears on microscope slides.

These lectures consider the kinetics of phase changes, induced by a sudden change of external thermodynamic parameters. E.g., we treat a system with a second-order transition at a critical temperature Tc (Fig. 1, left part). For T0 > Tc the system is disordered, while for T < Tc there is an order parameter ± ψ (implying one-component orderings, e.g., an Ising model; later we discuss generalizations). We consider a “quenching experiment”: The system is brought from an initially disordered state at T0 to a state at T where in equilibrium the system should be orderedl. Since no sign of ψ is preferred, the system starts forming locally ordered regions of either sign, separated by domain walls. …

Aggregation in Input–Output Tables: How to Select the Best Cluster Linkage

In this paper we try to give a solution to the aggregation problem on working with Input–Output tables. First of all we verify the degree of similarity among the production functions of the industries which aggregate in each sector. Secondly, once we have established the aggregation by using different cluster analysis, we set a number of conditions required to choose the proper linkage method that allows us to characterize the process of aggregation (weighted or unweighted) of the input–output table.

Polarization observables of deuteron photodisintegration with polarized photons and oriented deuterons are systematically investigated below π-production threshold with respect to their sensitivity to subnuclear degrees of freedom and relativistic effects, to the different electric and magnetic multipole contributions, and to various realistic potential models. In particular, a complete survey on all single- and double-polarization observables like beam and target asymmetries of the differential cross section, nucleon polarization and proton-neutron spin correlation is given.

Appropriateness between physical space and multicentre economic space in localization problems

Location models are constructed in mathematical economic spaces whereas people locate themselves in real or physical spaces. If economic spaces are multicentric ones, their properties are different from physical spaces. We say that these two spaces are not symmetric. Hence, mathematical location model can lead to an optimal location solution which doesn't' exist in physical space. But, if we admit that an optimal location solution owns more or less to a function of demand of location, we can resolve this question. Then, fuzzy demand functions of location are defined in multicentric spaces and an illustration of this concept is presented.

A query language for medical statistical analysis

While standard query languages support primarily the definition of single queries, in the evaluation of medical studies one usually formulates large sets of interdependent queries. A set of this type is called an integrated transaction. Our system for the definition of integrated transactions is based on the observation that in medicine a large number of statistical evaluations is founded on a conceptional model that can be structured as a tree. We describe a screen oriented tree editor for the relational data base system DBase and report on our experience with its application in the evaluation of the success rate of PTCA interventions.

A parallel splitting up method and its application to Navier-Stokes equations

A parallel splitting-up method (or the so called alternating-direction method) is proposed in this paper. The method not only reduces the original linear and nonlinear problems into a series of one dimensional linear problems, but also enables us to compute all these one dimensional linear problems by parallel processors. Se ha seguido mediante microscopía óptica y micoscopía electrónica, la revascularización de los implantes y los cambios tendinosos intrínsecos, tanto en la serie de aloinjertos en "fresco", como de aloinjertos congelados. En los aloinjertos en fresco, predomina la intensa respuesta inflamatoria -inmunitaria, siendo la respuesta reparadora de escasos signos de orientación del tejido fibroso definitivo. A method to determine the sizedistribution of the biological aerosols is shown, which gives the opportunity to determine a lower limit of the biological particles. For evaluation a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer are used.

Effect of isoprinosine on IL-2, IFN-γ and IL-4 production in vivo and in vitro

The effects of an immunopotentiating drug, isoprinosine, on the splenocytes of BALB/c mice to produce cytokines were investigated. Isoprinosine enhanced IL-2 production, upregulating the expression of IL-2 receptor in vitro. It also significantly increased the IFN-gamma secretion and decreased the IL-4 production in vivo. The significance of these findings in terms of immune regulation is discussed.

Se present a el caso de un ganglion de la articulación tibio-peronea proximal que se extendió a la musculatura peronea, el nervio peroneo profundo, ligamento lateral externo y menisco externo y ocasionó paresia del ciático poplíteo externo. Tuvo evolución recidivante por lo cual fue intervenido en 4 oportunidades; en la última se realizó una transposición tendinos a por parálisis del nervio peroneo profundo. El paciente evolucionó satisfactoriamente con recuperación de la función y desaparición del dolor. Abstract 119Sn-NMR spectroscopy has been utilized in the characterization of various phenolics as their bis(tri-butyltin)oxide, TBTO, derivatives. The present method has been applied both for determination of simple model compounds and for characterization of complex biopolymeric material originating from spent bleach liquor fractionated by an ultrafiltration technique. Based on the large range of 119Sn-NMR chemical shifts of TBTO derivatives of the phenolic compounds and the similar relaxation properties of 119Sn nuclei located in those derivatives, both qualitative and quantitative analytical conclusions can be drawn.
