Increased plasminogen activator inhibitor antigen levels in diabetic patients with stable angina
1991
PAI-1 antigen, tPA antigen and thrombin - antithrombin III complexes (TAT) levels were measured in 10 males with stable angina and type-II diabetes mellitus and in 16 males with stable angina without diabetes or other risk factors (hyperfibrinogenaemia, hyperlipidaemia, diabetes, hypertension, smoking and obesity) known to increase PAI levels. Ten healthy men of equivalent age served as controls. Because only diabetics with coronary artery disease (CAD) showed a decreased fibrinolytic capacity, a second study was performed on the 16 non-diabetic CAD patients to determine whether submaximal workload induces significant changes of tPA and PAI levels. TAT levels were increased in CAD, and sign…
The dimensionality of human's electroencephalogram during sleep.
1991
In order to perform an analysis of nonlinear EEG-dynamics we investigated the EEG of ten male probands during sleep. According to Rechtschaffen and Kales (1968) we scored the sleep-EEG and applied an algorithm, proposed by Grassberger and Proccaccia (1983) to compute the correlation dimension of different sleep stages. The correlation dimension characterizes the dynamics of the EEG signal and estimates the degrees of freedom of the signal under study. We could demonstrate, that the EEG of slow wave sleep stages depicts a dimensionality, which is two units smaller than that of light or REM sleep.

The reinvestigation of aerial parts of A. herba- alba subsp. valentina afforded four new eudesmanolides, all of them closely related to torrentin. Their structures were deduced by spectroscopic and chemical methods
Die endosonographie zur properativen stadienbeurteilung gastrointestinaler tumoren
1991
Study of J/$\psi$ production in p-U, O-U and S-U interactions at 200 GeV per nucleon
1991
Abstract In a search for quark-gluon plasma formation, the production of J/ψ and muon pairs in the mass continuum region is studied in oxygen-uranium and sulphur-uranium interactions. The yield of J/ψ relative to the continuum is measured to be a decreasing function of the neutral transverse energy produced in the collision, i.e. of the energy density. A comparison is made with proton-uranium reactions.

Savoxepine: invalidation of an "atypical" neuroleptic response pattern predicted by animal models in an open clinical trial with schizophrenic patien…
1991
The new tetracyclic compound savoxepine exhibits potent antidopaminergic effects with preferential activity in the hippocampus as compared to striatum in rat brain. As a result of behavioural animal models and regional differences in dopamine receptor binding characteristics, it has been suggested to possess an "atypical" neuroleptic response pattern. In an open clinical trial, savoxepine was administered to 12 in-patients suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and schizophreniform disorder (DSM-III). Eight patients were treated with a stable dose of 0.5 mg per day throughout the study, while in the remaining patients higher doses up to 20 mg/day were administered. Mean total BPRS scores and…
Gastric emptying of indigestible tablets in relation to composition and time of ingestion of meals studied by metal detector.
1991
Enteric-coated tablets leave the stomach mainly during the interdigestive phase. Composition as well as time of ingestion of meals may influence their gastric emptying considerably. In 12 normal volunteers gastric emptying of a plastic tablet with a metal core was followed by a metal detector in relation to different compositions and various times of ingestion of meals. With an empty stomach and after ingestion of 250 ml water, the mean time for gastric emptying of the tablet was 38 +/- 11 min (mean +/- SEM) and 38 +/- 8 min. Two hundred fifty milliliters of milk (652 kJ) and a formula diet (1000 kJ) delayed gastric emptying time to 128 +/- 14 and 152 +/- 6 min, respectively (P less than 0.…
Hydrolytic enzymes in the coelomic cells of the polychaeteNereis virens during sexual maturation
1991
Nereis virens were collected between April 1989 and April 1990 at Yerseke, Oosterscheldt Bay, The Netherlands. Activities of the hydrolytic enzymes arylsulfatase, acid phosphatase, N-acetylglucosaminidase, aminopeptidase, and carboxylesterase were investigated in coelomic cells (elaeocytes) of individuals at different stages of maturation as determined by the time course of oocyte growth. On a protein-content basis, up to ten-fold higher specific activities were present in the elaeocytes compared to the body-wall tissue. Acid phosphatase, N-acetylglucosaminidase, leucine aminopeptidase, and long- and medium-chain esterase increased continuously from the beginning to the later stage of sexua…
Ultrastructural localization of interferon-producing cells in the livers of patients with chronic hepatitis B
1991
Cells expressing alpha- and gamma-interferon were localized in the liver tissue of patients with chronic hepatitis B by means of light and electron microscopy using monoclonal antibodies. Interferon-positive cells were regularly seen in the infiltrating mononuclear cells, and the number showed a good correlation with the degree of the necroinflammatory activity of the disease. In chronic persistent hepatitis and in normal livers, they were infrequent or virtually absent. alpha-Interferon was shown to be positive in lymphocytes, polymorphonuclear leukocytes and fibroblasts, Kupffer cells and, weakly, in the cytoplasm of a few hepatocytes in cases of active hepatitis, whereas gamma-interferon…

Dopaminergic control of feline hippocampal epilepsy: A nigrophippocampal pathway
1991
Abstract Substantia nigra is a mesencephalic structure inserted along several circuits which appear to play a key role in epilepsy. In previous researches we postulated that substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) may be the site of a precise control of hippocampal epilepsy while substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNpr) may exert a modulation of both neocortical epilepsy and spreading of hyperactivity toward a motor target. In order to better understand mechanisms subserving nigral action in feline hippocampal epilepsy we electrically stimulated SNpc (dopaminergic), before and after sulpiride (dopamine receptor-antagonist) intravenous injection. Furthermore we compared hippocampal epileptiform…
Reduced basal and stimulated (isoprenaline, Gpp(NH)p, forskolin) adenylate cyclase activity in Alzheimer's disease correlated with histopathological …
1991
Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) is an adenylate cyclase borne second messenger involved in basic metabolic events. The beta-adrenoceptor sensitive adenylate cyclase was studied in post-mortem hippocampi of controls and Alzheimer patients. Virtually identical subsets of each hippocampus homogenate were stimulated by 100 mumol isoprenaline, Gpp(NH)p and forskolin, respectively, in presence of an ATP-regenerating system. The determination of cAMP formed was carried out by means of a radioassay. The observed significant 50% reduction in basal as well as in stimulated adenylate cyclase activity in Alzheimer's disease is negatively correlated with semiquantitative evaluations of amyloid pla…
Chronology of panic and avoidance, age of onset in panic disorder, and prediction of treatment response. A report from the Cross-National Collaborati…
1991
The relevance of the chronology between panic disorder and avoidance behavior and of an early, medium or late onset of panic disorder was tested. Groups from the sample of the cross-national collaborative panic study (CNCPS) were compared for differences in basic characteristics and for the ability to predict treatment response. Patients who developed avoidance behavior before the full syndrome of panic disorder had less often a full agoraphobia but were not different in their response to treatment. Patients with an early onset of panic disorder suffered more often from agoraphobia. The treatment response was similar in the groups with early, medium or late onset of panic disorder. Neither …
Geometric interpretation of the optimality conditions in multifacility location and applications
1991
Geometrical optimality conditions are developed for the minisum multifacility location problem involving any norm. These conditions are then used to derive sufficient conditions for coincidence of facilities at optimality; an example is given to show that these coincidence conditions seem difficult to generalize.
Addition von Phosphor‐Nucleophilen an Benzothiet
1991
Addition Reactions of Phosphorus Nucleophiles to Benzothiete Trialkyl phosphites 4 add to the o-quinoid form 2 of benzothiete (1) to yield the phosphonates 6. An intermolecular migration of an alkyl group from oxygen to sulfur is the most important feature of this transformation. The rearrangement – related to the Arbuzov reaction – can be avoided in a two-step process by the subsequent action of PCl3 and alcohol; thus the phosphonates 10 are generated. Analogous to 2 6, dimethyl phenylphosphinate (11) furnishes 13. In contrast, the cyclic esters 14a–d form 2:1 adducts, namely the 12- to 15-membered heterocyclic compounds 17a – d. An intramolecular rearrangement in a 1:1 adduct is only obse…
Social Styles of Finns and Americans
1991
Using the Assertiveness-Responsiveness Measure, scores of 230 Finnish university students were compared with those of 251 American university students. These American students' scores indicated that they were significantly more assertive and responsive than were the Finnish participants, the American men scored as more assertive than the Finnish men, and both groups of women as more responsive than both groups of men.

Polyfunctional chloroformates were applied to the polymerization of 2-phenyl-2-oxazoline and 2-methyl-2-oxazoline. The use of a trifunctional initiator, viz. the chloroformate of 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-1-butanol, led to three-arm star polymers of 2-oxazolines. Two macromolecular initiators, viz. poly(ethylene oxide) with two chloroformate end groups (α-chloroformyl-ω-chloroformyloxypoly(oxyethylene)) with number-average molar masses 350 g/mol ≤ Mn ≤ 6000 g/mol and α-chloroformyl-ω-methoxypoly(oxyethylene) with Mn = 350 and 750 g/mol were applied for the synthesis of poly(2-oxazoline)-block-poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(2-oxazoline) and poly(2-oxazoline)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) copolyme…
Finns and Americans Compared on the Immediacy Construct
1991
The Self-assessment of Immediacy Scale was administered to 219 Finnish students and 147 American students. The two groups were not significantly different from each other in perceived nonverbal immediacy. When the men were compared to the women, the women were significantly more immediate.
Transmission-line model to analyze a multistage polarizer rotator
1991
A simple transmission-line model to design a broadband system consisting of a multilayered polarization rotator that rotates the polarization plane of a linearly polarized electromagnetic wave is presented. A simulation program that permits the design of the rotator parameters was implemented, and a prototype was designed, manufactured, and tested. Comparisons between the theoretical results and measurements are given, and a good correspondence is found.

1991
Abstract A linear correlation between the chemical isomer shift and the quadrupole coupling constant for a number of antimony tris-thiolates has been evidenced. This behaviour can be rationalized on considering a modulation of the s/p character of the lone pair of electrons from the influence of secondary bonds.
Effects of LHRH, progesterone, estradiol-17 ? and dexamethasone in vitro on pineal synaptic ribbons and serotonin N-acetyltransferase activity in die…
1991
Pineal glands of regularly cycling Sprague Dawley rats (180-220 g) killed on the diestrous morning (between 0900-1000 h) were incubated in appropriate media for six hours with LHRH (8.5 microM), progesterone (3.2 microM), estradiol-17 beta (370 nM) or dexamethasone (250 nM). Pineals incubated in hormone-free medium and unincubated glands served as controls. Six rats were used in each group. After incubation the glands were divided into two parts. One part was used to estimate serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity. The other part was processed for electron microscopy to quantify synaptic ribbons (SR). The SR numbers were computed to 20,000 microns 2 area of pineal tissue. The number a…
Projective spaces on partially ordered sets and Desargues' postulate
1991
We introduce a generalized concept of projective and Desarguean space where points (and lines) may be of different size. Every unitary module yields an example when we take the 1-and 2-generated submodules as points and lines. In this paper we develop a method of constructing a wide range of projective and Desarguean spaces by means of lattices.

1991
Male outbred Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a choline-deficient diet containing 0.10% DL-ethionine for up to 30 weeks. Liver slices from rats killed 4, 6, 10, 14, 22 and 30 weeks after starting the treatment were histochemically analyzed for the following parameters: basophilia, expression of cytokeratin 19 (which in the liver is bile duct epithelial cell-specific), glycogen content and activities of glycogen synthetase (SYN), glycogen phosphorylase (PHO), glucose-6-phosphatase (G6PASE), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), glycerin-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH), 'malic enzyme' (MDH), alkaline phosphatase (ALKPASE) and gamma-glutamyl…
Reactions of azoesters and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate with 3-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-5-thione
1991
The addition of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate to 3-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-5-thione (1), both in alcoholic medium and in inert solvents, has been investigated. When 1 was allowed to react with diethyl azodicarboxylate a disulfide 5 was obtained.
Transport of amino acids and their phosphonic acid analogues through supported liquid membranes containing macrocyclic carriers. Experimental paramet…
1991
Abstract Amino acid hydrochlorides are well transported through 1-decanol membranes containing Kryptofix 5 or 222 and supported in a porous polyacrylonitrile hollow fiber matrix. Factors which influence the transport of phenylalanine hydrochloride were studied in some detail using this sheet- as well as hollow fibre-supported liquid membranes. These studies show that the choice of the membrane phase, the kind of polymeric support and the mode of membrane preparation are of great importance for the efficiency of the process. The most vital step in the membrane preparation appears to be its activation by soaking in a solution of phenylalanine hydrochloride in a water-ethanol or water-propanol…
Muscle enzyme adaptations to added load during training and nontraining hours in rats.
1991
The effects of added load (20% of body mass) on the selected enzyme activities of red and white quadriceps femoris (QF), soleus, and gastrocnemius muscles of rats were studied. The rats were divided into sedentary control (SC), sedentary control with added load (SC+AL), endurance training (ET), and endurance training with added load (ET+AL) groups (n = 10 rats/group). After 6 wk, the SC+AL group had 57% higher (P less than 0.001) beta-glucuronidase (beta-GU) activity and 24% lower (P less than 0.05) citrate synthase activity in white QF than SC. Citrate synthase activity was also decreased in red QF (P less than 0.05) after the added load was used during nontraining hours. The training wit…

Intravaskuläre Sonographie: Erste klinische Ergebnisse
1991
Intravascular ultrasound is a new diagnostic modality which, for the first time, provides high resolution images of the vessel wall. 91 intraluminal ultrasound studies were performed in 50 patients during the course of 55 diagnostic and therapeutic catheterizations. A F-6 ultrasound catheter (20 MHz) was used. The method is an easily and rapidly performed addition to angiography. Changes in vessel walls (arteriosclerosis, dissection, tumour infiltration) can be readily diagnosed and their extent can be accurately described. The ability to determine luminal cross sectional area is particularly helpful for planning and performing therapeutic interventions.
Characterization of a novel open reading frame, urf a, in the mitochondrial genome of fission yeast: correlation of urf a mutations with a mitochondr…
1991
Between the genes for tRNA(gin) and tRNA(ile) an open reading frame of 227 amino acids has been identified which is unique among known mitochondrial genomes and which has been termed urf a (Lang et al. 1983; Kornrumpf et al. 1984). It uses the "mitochondrial" genetic code, i.e., it contains a TGA codon, whereas all other protein-encoding genes, and all but one intronic open reading frame, use the "standard" genetic code (UGG for tryptophan). A previous paper has demonstrated that "mutator" strains show an increased formation of mitochondrial drug-resistant and respiration-deficient mutants (including deletions). In this paper we show that the mutator activity is correlated with mutations in…
Influence of molecular weight and polydispersity on phase behaviour of polyesters with laterally fixed or cross-shaped mesogens
1991
Abstract To supplement previous studies of polyesters with laterally attached and cross-shaped mesogens the influence of molecular weight and molecular weight distribution on the phase behaviour has been investigated. For that purpose two polyesters have been fractionated by preparative gel permeation chromatography under high pressure and observed by polarizing microscopy and DSC measurements. A monotropic nematic polyester with laterally attached mesogens shows changing phase transitions up to a molecular weight of 10 000 (Mw); at higher molecular weight only the clearing transition is still slightly influenced. The molecular weight distribution at an average molecular weight of 15 000 (M…
Electromagnetic production of polarization in hypernuclei.
1991
The formation of polarized hypernuclei through kaon photoproduction is investigated in a distorted-wave impulse approximation approach. The polarization depends strongly on the model used to describe the elementary process. For one particular model and certain well populated states the amount of polarization may reach up to 50%. We present cross sections and polarizations for kaon photoproducton on $^{16}\mathrm{O}$, $^{28}\mathrm{Si}$, $^{56}\mathrm{Fe}$, and $^{89}\mathrm{Y}$ and demonstrate the sensitivity of polarization to distortion and nonlocal effects. More information on the elementary process is needed before the feasibility of such measurements can be established.
Intraarterielle präoperative Chemotherapie fortgeschrittener Zervixkarzinome
1991
Three patients suffering from very advanced primary cancers of the cervix uteri (FIGO II B or III B) were treated. By preoperative selective perfusion of both uterine arteries, using cis-platinum alone, a distinct reduction of the tumour volume was achieved. This was demonstrated clinically and also by CAT scan and NMR technique. The elevated serum CEA and SCC levels decreased to normal values. The histomorphology of the Wertheim-Meigs specimens revealed no tumour invasion of the initially infiltrated parametria. This treatment modality has been developed to minimise the toxic side effects of the inductive (neo-adjuvant) chemotherapy for cervical cancers.
High-resolution physisorption techniques for the characterization of adsorbents and catalysts
1991
Abstract High-resolution physisorption techniques performed in the continuous volumetric mode have been developed to investigate the surface and pore structure properties of porous solids. Physisorption data on well-defined microporous solids (zeolites and aluminophosphates) provide novel information on the mechanism of micropore filling, the behavior of the adsorbed phase and the pore structure of the adsorbent. The combination of physisorption with high-resolution analytical techniques such as calorimetry and neutron diffraction further expands our knowledge and understanding of physisorption processes. The results are not only important for fundamental research but can be applied in the …
