The mesonic spectrum of bosonized QCD2 in the chiral limit

Abstract By studying an equivalent non-abelian bosonic theory we resolve the mesonic spectrum of quantum chromodynamics in one space-one time dimension for massless quarks. The emphasis is placed in the non-chiral sector described be colored meson fields. Two and four point functions of these fields are explicitly calculated in the large N limit. Some of the relevant issues: chiral symmetry realization, phases, anomaly saturation, etc…, are revisited.

High-pressure flow-injection assembly. Indirect determination of glycine by atomic absorption spectrometry.

A procedure for the determination of glycine is described. The method is based on the reaction of the analyte with finely powdered, solid copper(II) carbonate in a continuous-flow assembly. The optimum experimental conditions of pH, temperature, sample volume, flow-rate, column length and internal diameter, and the linear range of calibration, were studied. Interference from foreign substances that accompany this amino acid in pharmaceutical formulations was studied, and the method was applied to the determination of glycine.

Characterization of fusion from without induced by herpes simplex virus

The process of fusion from without (FFWO) induced by herpes simplex virus (HSV) was analyzed by using various inhibitors and compared to fusion from within (FFWI). The fate of certain elements of the cytoskeleton after FFWO was also investigated. Our experiments demonstrate FFWO as a very suitable system for study of early virus-cell interactions. Zn++ ions proved inhibitory for penetration whilst pretreatment of cells with Ca++ ions before infection enhanced FFWO activity. Dissociation of penetration from the fusion process itself was possible by use of Zn++ ions, low pH-treatment and antiserum on the one hand and N-ethylmaleimide and cytochalasin D on the other. The hyperfine field at the nucleus of singly ionized radium has been investigated using the relativistic linked-cluster many-body-perturbation-theory procedure, including the effects of distributed charge and magnetization over the nucleus. The total hyperfine field of 1239 T, when combined with the experimentally observed hyperfine constant for $^{213}\mathrm{Ra}^{+}$, yields a nuclear moment of 0.607(12)${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}_{\mathit{N}}$, in excellent agreement with the experimentally observed moment of 0.6133(18)${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}_{\mathit{N}}$ from Zeeman measurements. A method of desingularization for analytic two-dimensional vector field families

It is well known that isolated singularities of two dimensional analytic vector fields can be desingularized: after a finite number of blowing up operations we obtain a vector field that exhibits only elementary singularities. In the present paper we introduce a similar method to simplify the periodic limit sets of analytic families of vector fields. Although the method is applied here only to reduce to families in which the zero set has codimension at least two, we conjecture that it can be used in general. This is related to the famouss Hibert's problem about planar vector fields.

Mapping burns and natural reforestation using thematic Mapper data

Abstract Remote sensing techniques are specially suitable to detect and to map areas affected by forest fires. In this work, Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) data has been used to study a number of forest fires that occurred in the province of Valencia (Spain) and to monitor the vegetation regeneration over burnt areas. A reference area (non‐burnt forest) was established to assess the change produced by fire. The radiance in the thermal band (10.4–12.5 μm) and the normalized difference in reflectance between near 1R (0.76–0.90 μm) and middle IR (2.08–2.35 μm) were the most suitable parameters to map burnt areas. Genome organization and nucleotide sequence of human papillomavirus type 39

The 7833-bp nucleotide sequence of human papillomavirus type 39 (HPV39), which is associated with genital intraepithelial neoplasias and invasive carcinomas, has been determined. The genome organization deduced from the sequence shares characteristic features with other genital papillomaviruses. According to sequence comparisons, HPV39 most closely resembles HPV18 and may be a member of a subgroup of genital papillomaviruses distinct from the HPV16/31/33 group. As a novel feature, we report a 1.3-kb open reading frame on the DNA strand which lacks major open reading frames in the other sequenced HPV genomes.

Baseline seroepidemiology of hepatitis A virus infection among children and teenagers in Italy.

During the period from May 1987 through November 1989, the prevalence of antibodies to hepatitis A virus infection (anti-HAV) was assayed by the ELISA method in the serum samples of 5,507 (54% males, 46% females) apparently healthy subjects three to 19 years old in Italy. Subjects were selected by a systematic cluster sampling in five different geographical areas of Italy. The overall prevalence of anti-HAV was 9.5%; it increased from 2.3% among children three to five-years-old to 16.3% in teenagers 17 to 19 years old (p less than 0.001). A Mr29,000 serine phosphoprotein (P29) related to oestradiol receptor was studied in human term placenta with the use of a specific monoclonal antibody (D5). D5 was used with two different methods, immunohistochemistry and immunoradiometry. For immunohistochemistry, an indirect immunoperoxidase method was chosen to detect P29 in methacarn-fixed, wax-embedded sections. P29 was mostly confined to the syncytiotrophoblast surrounding placental villi, staining being positive in both cytoplasm and nuclei. The stroma of villi was negative. We calculate theon-shell fermion wave-function renormalization constantZ 2 of a general gauge theory, to two loops, inD dimensions and in an arbitrary covariant gauge, and find it to be gauge-invariant. In QED this is consistent with the dimensionally regularized version of the Johnson-Zumino relation: d logZ 2/da 0=i(2π)−D e 0 2 ∫d D k/k 4=0. In QCD it is, we believe, a new result, strongly suggestive of the cancellation of the gauge-dependent parts of non-abelian UV and IR anomalous dimensions to all orders. Night-rest urinary catecholamine excretion in relation to aspects of free time, work and background data in a teacher group

Free time, work and background data were related to night-rest catecholamine excretion rates in a teacher group (n = 137) during an autumn term. The explained interindividual variance increased slightly towards the end of the term. Adrenaline excretion was predicted better than noradrenaline, notedly by coffee consumption, amount of physical activity, and subjective stress feelings which explained 16% of the variance in adrenaline excretion during night rest. However, the results indicated that the differences in catecholamine excretion during night rest remained mostly unpredictable.

Laser heterodyne displacement measuring using PLZT frequency shifter

Abstract The implementation of a frequency shifter based on lead lanthanum zirconate titanate ceramic (PLZT) and a voltage-controlled λ/4 plate is described. The capabilities of these elements are demonstrated with results from a Michelson-type laser heterodyne displacement measuring interferometer with 0.01 μm accuracy and 1 Hz display update rate.

Semi-interpenetrating networks based on linear anionic polystyrene (PS) and poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) P(ScoMA) of low MA content are prepared by crosslinking the P(ScoMA) with 4,4′-diphenylmethanediamine (DPMDA). It is demonstrated by dynamic mechanical analysis and by DSC that immiscible semi-IPN's are obtained for MA contents greater 5 wt.-%. In miscible semi-IPN's the relaxation of free PS chains is observed as a second maximum in the loss tangent at higher temperatures. Plasma lipids and lipoproteins were measured in 21 post-menopausal women after 4 and 8 months of continuous treatment with an orally administered combination of oestradiol and medroxyprogesterone acetate. The mean concentrations of cholesterol and low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol were reduced by 12% (P less than 0.001) and 11% (P less than 0.01), respectively, after 4 months of treatment and by 9% (P less than 0.05) and 12% (P less than 0.05) after 8 months. Hemoglobin dynamics in rat erythrocytes investigated by M�ssbauer spectroscopy

Rats have been enriched in 57Fe and erythrocytes were isolated from the blood. Mössbauer absorption spectroscopy on the hemoglobin of these erythrocytes has shown rather similar dynamics as found earlier in crystals of myoglobin, in frozen solutions of human hemoglobin and in a number of other proteins. The results strongly indicate that the motion of the heme and presumably some part of the F-helix is mainly influenced by the average viscosity of the sample determined by a network of hydrogen bridges and other weak interactions. Extrapolations of Mössbauer results from protein crystals to proteins in their physiological surroundings seem to be suitable for heme proteins.

Asymmetrically substituted calix[4]arenes; A two-dimensional 1H NMR study of a tetraester derivative in the cone-conformation

Abstract Several new chiral calix[4]arenes with three or four different substituents in the p-position have been prepared by fragment condensation. Standard derivatization procedures always led to the formation of mixtures of various conformational isomers from which the derivative in the cone-conformation could be isolated only by preparative HPLC. For a tetraester derivative it was shown by two-dimensional 1H NMR spectroscopy, that due to the different substituents the cone-conformation is strongly distorted. The sodium complex of this tetraester, however, assumes a regular cone-conformation again.

We report here on the measurement of isotope shift and hyperfine splitting of190, 191, 193, 197Pb for the 723 nm atomic optical transition. Detailed analysis of the optical data has been done by combining them with the available muonic and electronicx-ray isotope shift data. The magnetic dipole moments and the electric quadrupole moments of the odd isotopes have been extracted from the hyperfine coupling constants of the atomic states involved in the optical transition used.

We observed the Zeeman-splitting of the 6S 1/2-6P 1/2 resonance transition of Ba+ ions (493.4 nm) in a 6 T magnetic field. The ions were stored in a Penning quadrupole trap. From the splitting and the simultaneously measured cyclotron frequency of stored electrons we derived theg-factors of the 6S 1/2 and 6P 1/2 states. The results areg(6S 1/2)=2.00267(20) andg(6P 1/2)=0.66634(22).

Evidence that the interaction between circulating IgA and fibronectin is a normal process enhanced in primary IgA nephropathy

A solid-phase ELISA was set up to measure the direct binding capacity (BC) of different, commercially available, purified human IgA preparations to plates coated with human fibronectin (FN). It was found that secretory, polymeric, and, to a much lesser extent, monomeric IgA exhibited elevated FN-BC as compared to their BC to plates coated with bovine serum albumin. This binding was specific since not observed with human IgG or IgM antibodies. Formal operations and postformal reasoning: A replication

The relationship between formal operations and postformal reasoning was examined by using the Shayer (1978) chemicals problem to assess formal operations and the Commons, et al. (1982) four-story problem to measure postformal reasoning. The subjects were 35 undergraduate social science and humanities students. None of the subjects who were classified as concrete operational or transitional on the chemicals task showed postformal reasoning. The hypothesis that full format operations are a necessary condition of post-formal reasoning and the expectation that subjects showing full formal operations are more likely than others to exhibit postformal reasoning was not supported.

The β− decay of101Zr has been investigated at the fission-product separators JOSEF and LOHENGRIN. The half-life of101Zr has been determined to 2.5(1) s and a level scheme for101Nb has been established fromγ ray singles as well as X/3-γ and γ—γ coincidence measurements. Conversion coefficients for transitions in101Nb and level half-lives between 10 ps and 2 ns have been determined. Three rotational bands are identified among the low-lying levels with band heads at 0 keV, 206 keV and 208 keV. The bands are probably based on the Nilsson configurations [422 5/2+], [301 3/2−] and [303 5/2−], respectively. Summary Cardenolide formation was investigated in hypocotyl cultures of Digitalis obscura L. established on MS medium with growth regulators selected to promote either callus formation, caulogenesis, embryogenesis or rhizogenesis. Examination of the cardenolide composition of leaves from mature plants was also performed. Several compounds of series A and C were identified by HPLC in in vitro and in vivo grown tissues, no marked differences being found between their cardenolide patterns. This paper describes a fully mechanized homogeneous immunoassay using the immunoactivation method for the rapid and specific determination of human granulocyte elastase (EC 3.4.21.37) in plasma. The method uses anti-elastase antibody fragments from sheep, conjugated to horseradish peroxidase. These enzyme-antibody conjugates bind to the elastase-alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor complex present in plasma. A separate sample blank with non-specific sheep antibody fragments conjugated to horseradish peroxidase corrects for errors introduced by the sample matrix. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy of urinary calculi: experience in treatment of 3,278 patients using the Siemens Lithostar and Lithostar Plus.

Between March 1986 and June 1989, 3,278 patients with upper urinary tract calculi were treated at our medical center with the Lithostar lithotriptor. The stones were located in the calices in 41.9% of the cases, renal pelvis in 25.7% and ureter in 32.4%. Perirenal hematoma was noted in 0.5% of the patients but this resolved spontaneously within a few days. Auxiliary procedures were performed in 37.3% of the cases, including Double-J stent and ureteral catheter in 26.8%, ureterorenoscopy in 2.1%, percutaneous nephrostomy in 1.6%, Zeiss loop in 4.3% and percutaneous nephrolithotripsy in 3.5%. The peptidergic innervation of rat thymus has been investigated by immunohistochemical methods, focusing on the spatial interrelationship of peptidergic nerve fibers with mast cells and macrophages in the rat. Conservative treatment of ectopic pregnancies using a single echo-guided injection of methotrexate into the gestational sac

The authors describe the possibility of the conservative treatment of five early ectopic pregnancies. A single injection of methotrexate into the tubal gestational sac was performed under vaginal ultrasound guidance. In all five cases, a clear ectopic gestational sac could be visualized. The pregnancies dated from the 5th to the 7th week of amenorrhea. Strict ultrasound follow-up following injection showed a gradual reduction in the size of the tubal gestational sac. At the same time, plasma beta-hCG gradually decreased to zero after a maximum time period of 25 days. A semi-3D method of calculating the magnetic field in a conventional sector-focused cyclotron

Abstract A semi-3D method to calculate the median plane magnetic field in a conventional sector-focused cyclotron was developed in order to avoid the need of model magnet studies in the design of the Jyvaskyla K130 cyclotron. The method gives reasonably good results especially at high fields. At low fields where the relative permeability of iron is high the field can be calculated assuming constant magnetic scalar potential on the iron surfaces and solving a three-dimensional Laplace equation. The field calculation methods will be described and the comparison of calculated and measured fields will be given.
