The weight of the brain amounts to only 2% of total body weight, but it receives 15% of the cardiac output and uses 20% of the oxygen consumed by the body. The energy supply is provided almost exclusively by glucose metabolism. The substrate for this is stored in the brain in the form of glucose or glycogen and is sufficient to cover the energy requirements for only about 1 min. Consequently, there is a delicate equilibrium between oxygen and nutrient supply from the blood and the energy requirements of the brain. Disturbances in neurologic function appear after a few seconds of ischemia, although they are not necessarily persistent at first.

A truncated driven Overhauser effect study of Adriamycin in water: Conformation of the glycosidic linkage

Abstract Truncated driven nuclear Overhauser effect difference spectra have been used to ascertain the conformational characteristics of the glycosidic linkage of Adriamycin in aqueous solution. The “two-spin approximation” has been employed to evaluate the cross-relaxation rates between nearby protons and to obtain the relative internuclear distances. The rotational angles φ1 = C(7)−O(7)−C(1′)−(H1′) and φ2 = H(7)−C(7)−O(7)−C(1′) have also been calculated.

In order to elucidate the influence of thickness and amorphous structure on the kinetics of electron exchange with redox couples in solution, a critical re-examination of the energetics at the amorphous anodic WO3 films (a-WO3)—electrolyte junction has been performed, based on a recent theory of amorphous semiconductor (a-SC) Schottky barrier. Effects of explosive type strength training on physical performance characteristics in cross-country skiers.

To investigate the effects of a combination of simultaneous strength and endurance training on selected neuromuscular and aerobic performance characteristics seven male cross-country skiers underwent training for a period of 6 weeks. The experimental group trained 6-9 times per week with a programme consisting of 34% explosive type strength training and 66% endurance training during the first 3 weeks of the experiment and 42% and 58% respectively during the last 3 weeks of the experiment. Abstract In the present paper we discuss the possible use of ‘planning’ ° to support architectural design. Architectural design is conceived as a process incorporating non-trivial subprocesses consisting of evolutionary sequences of drawings. The ‘planner’ can be viewed as a tool capable of managing the automatic development of formal descriptions of architectural objects, according to goals and constraints which are interactively assigned or removed by the designer. The main features of a ‘planner’ dedicated to architectural design are then put forward. The system has been implemented at the University of Ancona, Italy.

There is growing evidence that capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurones participate in the protective mechanisms of the gastric mucosa against damage. Animals pretreated systemically with capsaicin, at doses that lead to the ablation of capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurons, show an increase in the level of macro-scopically apparent mucosal damage in different experimental models of ulceration (Szolcsanyi and Bartho, 1981; Holzer and Sametz, 1986). Furthermore, acute stimulation with capsaicin of afferent nerve endings located in the gastric mucosa protects against different ulcerogenic mechanisms (Szolcsanyi and Bartho, 1981; Holzer and Lippe, 1988; Holzer et al., 1989).

The polarization of high-energy electrons can conveniently be measured by means of Moller scattering from polarized electrons in a magnetized ferromagnetic target. This process exhibits in the limit of high energies (E ≥ 100 MeV) still relatively large, energy independent and well known analysator strengths. Furthermore, the laboratory cross section in the kinematical range suitable for polarimeter applications is large $$ \frac{{d\sigma }}{{d\Omega }}({\Theta _{cm}} = 90^\circ ) = Z \cdot 0.18{\text{ }}barn/sr$$ and energy-independent.

How Universal is the Scaling Theory of Localization?

The numerical implementation of the one-parameter scaling theory of localization is reviewed for the Anderson model of disordered solids. A finite-size scaling procedure is used to derive the 3D localization length and d.c.-conductivity from the raw data computed for quasi-1D systems by the strip-and-bar method. While a common scaling function can be unambiguously obtained for different distributions of the diagonal disorder in the Anderson model, discrepancies appear between the box and the Gaussian distribution with regard to the derived critical exponents. A case-control study of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

A retrospective case-control study was conducted using 46 patients affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and 92 closely matched healthy controls. Cases were ascertained through typical clinical and instrumental findings. Putative risk factors (bone fractures or major trauma, exposure to domestic animals, surgical operations, disease among first degree relatives and others) were investigated anamnestically using a standard questionnaire. Using Mantel-Haenzsel estimates of the odds ratio, no association was found between amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and the investigated variables.
