Spinrotator for MAMI

A source of polarized electrons based on the photoemission of a GaAsP-cathode [1] has been set up to inject polarized electrons in the Mainz microtron MAMI. In order to compensate the spin precession in MAMI a spinrotator system has to be integrated in the 100 keV beamline from the source to the injector linac to achieve the required longitudinal spin direction at target position.

Patient documentation for the ultrasound laboratory

The development of a PC based system for the storage of patient data in the echocardiography laboratory is described. Special design objectives were low cost and user friendliness, including an integrated special query language. After 3 years of use, the system stores 80000 diagnoses from 12000 patients without any relevant slowdown of response. Future developments concerning the communication between the database system and an echocardiographic sector scanner are discussed.

Effect of Intraperitoneal Sterile Urine Injection on Abdominal Myoelectrical Activity in the Spinal Rat Model

The abdominal muscle reflex contractions in response to intraperitoneal injection of homologous sterile urine and acid, alkaline, hypo- and hyperosmolar solutions are studied in an acute spinal rat model by conventional and integrated electromyographic techniques. Intraperitoneal injection of homologous sterile urine causes a powerful and almost immediate abdominal muscle contracture of relative short duration. This response seems not to be related to urine pH or osmolarity, since only when solutions with extreme variations in these parameters are injected intraperitoneally are significant abdominal muscle contractions observed.

Differential effects of perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) on rat liver UDP-glucuronosyltransferase isoenzymes have been observed after a single i.p. administration of the compound to young male Sprague-Dawley rats. (1) Bilirubin glucuronidation was induced 2-fold. The induced state was stable for at least 3 weeks. (2) Glucuronidation of 1-naphthol, morphine and testosterone was decreased to half of the control values. These decreases were maximal after 12 days but all three activities returned to normal levels after 3 weeks. Depending on their molecular structure, different degrees of supramolecular ordering result from the aggregation of these polar groups. In the case of phenylurazole units, which carry a single site for hydrogen-bond complexation, binary contacts are formed; whereas linear association chain structures are formed in the case of polybutadiene carrying phenylurazole units additionally substituted with a carboxy group in meta or para positions of the phenyl ring. The interaction of 32 Finnish mother-child dyads were analyzed in order to compare the behavioral features of normally developing (8 boys, 8 girls) and developmentally dysphasic (language-delayed) children (12 boys, 4 girls) doing tasks with their mothers. The average age of the children in the normal group was 4:1 years and in dysphasic group 4:7 years. The groups were matched to educational background of the mothers and to the age of the children. The videotaped observation sessions consisted of a block construction task and a discussion task. The atypical neuroleptic, sulpiride is a selective D2 antagonist, having a preferential action on mesolimbic regions. The effects of acute and chronic treatment with sulpiride on aggressive behaviour in male mice were studied using an ethologically based analysis. It was hypothesized that sulpiride would diminish "threat" and "attack" but would not produce marked "immobility", because of the mesolimbic effect referred to above. Isolated albino male mice (experimental animals) were confronted by "standard opponents".
