Vinblastine-induced autophagocytosis in cultured fibroblasts

1991

1. Balb/c 3T3 fibroblasts were incubated in a medium containing 10(-5) M vinblastine for 1, 2 and 3 hr. Morphometric analyses were performed after an incubation period of 2 hr. 2. The volume fraction of advanced autophagic vacuoles increased tenfold (P less than 0.05) concomitantly with a sixfold decrease in round lysosomes (P less than 0.01). 3. The volume fractions of pleomorphic lysosomes, nascent autophagic vacuoles and residual bodies did not differ significantly from the control values. 4. In many cells, advanced autophagic vacuoles resembled multivesicular bodies, which may indicate that the type of autophagocytosis occurring in cultured fibroblasts is microautophagy.

1991

Sonography and computed tomography are used in staging of lymph nodes of patients with head and neck cancer. The accuracy of sonography (90%) and computed tomography (85%) is comparable or better than the palpatory accuracy (85%). The better delineation of reactive swollen cervical nodes leads to a higher sensitivity of sonography (90%) and computed tomography (84%) versus palpation (74%), but a lower specifity (palpation 94%, sonography 90%, computed tomography 86%). A literature survey shows that sonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of cervical lymph nodes are comparable good methods.

Existence and Regularity of Solutions of Cauchy Problems for Inhomogeneous Wave Equations with Interaction

1991

The main aim of this paper is a nonrecursive formula for the compatibility conditions ensuring the regularity of solutions of abstract inhomogeneous linear wave equations, which we derive using the theory of T. Kato [11]. We apply it to interaction problems for wave equations (cf. [3]), generalizing regularity results of Lions-Magenes [12].

Simultaneous application of Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy and differential scanning colorimetry for the in situ investigation of phase transit…

1991

Abstract The combination of Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy with differential scanning colorimetry for the in situ investigation of phase transitions is illustrated using ammonium nitrate as an example. This method helps unambiguous characterisation of different phases by providing a simultaneous probe of thermodynamic and vibrational data.

Epsilon-Type contribution to baryon asymmetry from colored higgs triplets

1991

In scenarios where the cosmological baryon asymmetry is generated in the decay of heavy colored Higgs triplets at the one-loop level (at least two triplets are needed), it is shown that in addition to the conventional triangle loop (ε'-type effect), a new kind of diagram must be considered. This new type of diagram has its origin in the mixing of the two Higgs fields (ε-type effect). The mixing of the two Higgs fields violates CP provided they have at least two common decay channels. For small mixing angles, the new contribution can be bigger than the conventional one.

Parallel finite element splitting-up method for parabolic problems

1991

An efficient method for solving parabolic systems is presented. The proposed method is based on the splitting-up principle in which the problem is reduced to a series of independent 1D problems. This enables it to be used with parallel processors. We can solve multidimensional problems by applying only the 1D method and consequently avoid the difficulties in constructing a finite element space for multidimensional problems. The method is suitable for general domains as well as rectangular domains. Every 1D subproblem is solved by applying cubic B-splines. Several numerical examples are presented.

Effects of Neuromuscular Blocking Agents on Neuronal Nicotine Receptors of Motor Nerves: Blockade of Nicotinic Autofacilitation and Backfiring

1991

ABSTRACT Tubocurarine reduced (60%) [3H]acetylcholine release from the isolated rat phrenic nerve at concentrations of 1 or 10 μM, but blocked backfiring of the phrenic nerve occuring after partial blockade of cholinesterase already at a concentration of 100 nM. The distinct potency of tubocurarine suggests differences between the presynaptic nicotine receptors mediating autofacilitation of release and preterminal nicotine receptors mediating backfiring of the motor nerve or a low agonist concentration at the latter receptors. The new neuromuscular blocking agents atracurium, pancuronium and vecuronium less effectively reduced [3H]acetylcholine release than tubocurarine indicating a lower a…

PTCA of the left main stem following protective coronary artery bypass grafting.

1991

Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) was performed in 14 patients with significant left main stem stenosis following protective coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The procedure was successful in 13/14 patients (93%), achieving a decrease in mean diameter stenosis from 74% +/- 7% to 31% +/- 12% (P less than 0.01). Accordingly, the absolute stenosis diameter increased from 0.9 mm +/- 0.3 mm to 2.4 mm +/- 0.5 mm (P less than 0.01). Dissection of the left main stem artery and a transient significant fall of blood pressure each occurred in one patient. No other serious complications were noted. Eight of 13 patients (62%) with successful PTCA underwent control angiography. R…

Solving coupled Riccati matrix differential systems

1991

Abstract We start by noting that coupled Riccati matrix differential systems appearing in differential games may be considered as a single rectangular Riccati equation. An explicit solution of the coupled differential system in terms of a solution of the associated algebraic Riccati equation is given.

An Appraisal by M.I.P of the Changes Induced in the Microstructure of Complex Sulfide Ores by Reactive Thermal Treatments in H2 and N2

1991

Summary Changes in the microstructure of complex sulfide ores resulting from reactive thermal treatments in either H2 or N2 were investigated qualitatively by combined scanning electron microscopy and X ray microanalysis, and quantitatively by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and mercury pycnometry. With increasing treatment temperature, we successively observed: 1) the development of fractures, preferentially at interfaces between the various mineral components, 2) the development of meso and macropores and the simultaneous swelling of the solids and 3) the crystallization or recrystallization of the metal or sufide phase products. In all cases the specific pore volume and mean pore dia…

Environmental cadmium, lead and nickel contamination: possible relationship between soil and vegetable content

1991

The cadmium, lead and nickel content of soils of four agricultural areas exposed to different degrees of environmental pollution and vegetables grown there were measured by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). In order to ascertain the possible relationship between the heavy metal content of soils (total and extractable) and of vegetables grown in them, the correlation between the two was calculated. The highest correlation values between metal content of soil and vegetables are these corresponding to nickel: the total metal content in soils and leaves-stems are linear (p<0.01). The extractable metal content of soils and leaves-stems are linear (p<0.1). Therefore, soil seems to be the…

Professionalization as Status Adaptation: The Nobility, the Bureaucracy, and the Modernization of the Legal Profession in Finland

1991

In contrast to Anglo-American lines of professional development, the central agent of professionalization in many Continental countries was the state bureaucracy. However, this article proposes that an understanding of the class structure of traditional society is also needed to explain the privileged position of lawyers. An historical study of lawyers in the 19th century, after Finland was annexed by Russia, demonstrates that the legal profession provided the nobility an important medium of adaptation to the new society. The importance of the legal profession initially to the state bureaucracy, and subsequently to the nobility, explains its social prominence and its future development. An …

1991

A Random Field Approach to Transect Counts of Wildlife Populations

1991

Line transect counting of a wildlife population is considered a sampling from a planar marked point process, where the marks describe the detectability of the animals. Sampling properties of transect counts and a new density estimator are derived from a counting process, which is a shot-noise field induced by the marked point process. A general formula for the sampling variance of a transect is derived and applied to compare five common types of transects. Some stereological connections of transect sampling and density estimators are shown.

Incremental termination proofs and the length of derivations

1991

Incremental termination proofs, a concept similar to termination proofs by quasi-commuting orderings, are investigated. In particular, we show how an incremental termination proof for a term rewriting system T can be used to derive upper bounds on the length of derivations in T. A number of examples show that our results can be applied to yield (sharp) low-degree polynomial complexity bounds.
