Dynamical block analysis in a non-equilibrium system

1991

Abstract We present molecular dynamics simulation results of quenches into the unstable region of a two-dimensional Lennard-Jones system. The evolution of the system from the non-equilibrium state into equilibrium was analyzed with a dynamical block analysis. This can lead to a new approach in the study of non-equilibrium phenomena. We show that with such an analysis one can obtain results on the dynamic evolution as the system evolves, consistent with those obtained from and analysis of the pair-distribution function, structure factor and excess energy. The simulations were carried out on the parallel computer of the condensed matter theory group at the University of Mainz.

Modulatory action of acetylcholine on cerebrovascular sympathetic neurotransmission

1991

1. Acetylcholine (10 micrograms/min) diminished the electrically-induced cerebral blood flow reductions. Atropine (1-2 mg) partially blocked this inhibitory effect. 2. Exogenously administered noradrenaline (1-10 micrograms) and tyramine (50-500 micrograms) reduced cerebral blood flow but this effect was unchanged by acetylcholine infusion. 3. Acetylcholine inhibited the nonadrenergic component of the electrically-induced contraction at a concentration greater than or equal to 10(-6) M and potentiated the adrenergic component at a concentration greater than or equal to 10(5) M. Atropine 10(-7) M) inhibited both of these effects. In addition, acetylcholine (10(-4) M) enhanced the electricall…

The maximisation of the rate of financial profit

1991

On the traditional micro-economic theory, firms are supposed to maximise pure profit. We study what happened when we take into consideration shareholders and the financial profit remunerating the financial capital. We show that it is necessary to surrender the financial profit maximisation to use the rate of financial profit maximisation. The cases of concurrence with fix coefficient of capital, monopoly with fix coefficient of capital, monopoly with variable coefficient of capital are studied, and the role of contraints of rentability are treated. The solutions given by the profit maximisation and by the rate of profitmaximisation are compared. We conclude to a reduction of the volume of i…

Comparative study of the effect of gentamicin on the vestibulo-ocular and visual vestibulo-ocular reflexes in the cat.

1991

The ototoxic effect of an aminoglycoside, gentamicin, on the vestibular system was investigated in cats given daily doses of 40 mg/kg i.m. for 14 days. Periodically, measurements were made of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and visual vestibulo-ocular reflex (ViVOR) responses induced by rotatory stimuli at various frequencies from 0.0125 Hz to 0.8 Hz. After the cessation of drug administration, a progressively declining response to VOR stimuli continued, manifested by gain (ratio of peak response to peak stimulus amplitude) and phase relationships. The ViVOR was affected only in the gain measurements. The changes in the response amplitude (gain) were greater for the VOR than for the ViVOR…

Physico-chemical and bacteriological parameters in a hypereutrophic lagoon (Albufera Lake, Valencia, Spain).

1991

Several physico-chemical parameters related to water quality, as well as saprophytic and public health-related heterotrophic bacterial groups were studied in a hypereutrophic lake (Albufera, Valencia) at different seasons. Total microscopic and viable counts were compared, and, together with faecal indicators, were determined in water samples from different sites. Heterotrophic bacteria grown on nonselective medium were identified to genus level and a diversity index was calculated. Pseudomonas-Alcaligenes was the most frequently isolated group from all sampling sites along the study, following by Moraxella, Acinetobacter, Vibrio and Aeromonas. The relationships between all parameters were …

Shakedown Problems for Material Models with Internal Variables

1991

The classical shakedown theory is reconsidered with the objective of extending it to a quite general constitutive law for rate-insensitive elastic-plastic material models endowed with dual internal variables and thermodynamic potential. The statical and kinematical shakedown theorems, the corresponding approaches to the shakedown load multiplier problem and a deformation bounding theorem are presented and discussed with a view of further developments.

Pre- and Postjunctional Muscarinic Receptors in the Guinea-pig Trachea

1991

ABSTRACT The effects of M2- and Me-selective muscarinic antagonists on electrically evoked [3H]acetylcholine release and muscle contraction were compared in the isolated guinea-pig trachea. The M2-selective antagonists methoctramine and AF-DX 116 were more potent in enhancing the evoked release than in inhibiting the contractile response. As a consequence of the selective blockade of the inhibitory autoreceptors the evoked muscle contractions were enhanced by low concentrations (0.1 μmol/l) of the M2-selective antagonists. The Me-selective antagonists 4-DAMP, UH-AH 37 and pFHHSiD were more potent in reducing the contraction than in facilitating the evoked release. Surprisingly, HHSiD did no…

Asymptotic behaviour of mixed-type circuits. Delay time predicting

1991

In the preceding chapter we have shown that the delay time problem in integrated circuits leads us to consider mixed-type circuits with distributed elements described by Telegraph Equations and lumped resistive and capacitive elements (Figure 4.5). Moreover, the well-posedness of the mathematical model (P(B, V0)) = (E) + (BC) + (IC) has been studied, various conditions for the existence, uniqueness and L2stability of different kind of solutions being formulated.

Hla-Bb, Dr3 T Cell Impairhent is Completely Restored by in Vitho Treatment with Interleukin-2

1991

AbstractThe activity of recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) on the in vitro lymphocyte proliferative response to phytohemagglutinin mitogen was investigated in healthy HLA-BB, DR3 positive and negative subjects. the response to mitogen, significantly decreased in HLA-BB, DR3 positive subjects, was completely restored by adding rIL-2. Moreover, in HLA-BB, DR3 positive subjects the in vitro treatment with rIL-2 significantly increased the reduced frequency of mitogen responsive T lymphocyte precursors, as assessed by limiting dilution analysis. These data suggest that a decrease in the size of the pool of T cell precursors able to produce IL-2 is responsible for the impairment of T cell functio…

A comparative biochemical, pharmacological and immunological study of Clostridium novyi alpha-toxin, C. difficile toxin B and C. sordellii lethal tox…

1991

The three clostridial cytotoxins, i.e. alpha-toxin of C. novyi (Tox alpha-nov), toxin B of C. difficile (ToxB-dif) and lethal toxin of C. sordellii (LT-sor) consist of single peptide chains of about 200,000 (Tox alpha-nov), 250,000 (LT-sor) and 275,000 (ToxB-dif) mol. wts. ToxB-dif and LT-sor but not Tox alpha-nov cross-reacted with rabbit polyclonal antibodies. Toxicity upon i.v. injection in mice was similar (LD50, 100 hr, 50-200 ng/kg) and was characterized by a slowly developing fluid loss into the interstitial space. When injected into the rat paw the toxins caused a delayed local edema lasting for days. In vitro the three toxins provoked a persistent retraction of endothelial cells cu…

Monitoring of Enzyme Substitution Using the Cholesteryl Octanoate Breath Test

1991

The efficiency of enzyme replacement therapy in pancreatic insufficiency is usually judged on the grounds of clinical improvement and the effect on steatorrhea: treatment is thought to be successful if steatorrhea is abolished or, at least, reduced. In the majority of patients, the amount of enzyme necessary to alleviate steatorrhea can be reduced if lipase is protected against acidic inactivation either by blocking H2 secretion of the stomach or by protecting enzymes by pH-sensitive enteric coating. However, steatorrhea is frequently not abolished and a differential treatment may be necessary in each patient.

Genotoxicity of the fungicide dichlofluanid in seven assays

1991

Seven different endpoints for detection of genotoxicity have been used to demonstrate the DNA-altering properties of Dichlofluanid, a fungicide commonly used in viticulture pest control. Each endpoint (DNA synthesis inhibition test, alkaline viscosimetry, umu-test, alkaline filter elution, FADU-test, 32P-postlabeling, and electron microscopy) shows clear evidence of genotoxicity. These data indicate that application of the fungicide dichlofluanid may be mutagenic and/or carcinogenic for exposed humans.

Effect of water immersion on post-rotatory and caloric nystagmus.

1991

Caloric nystagmus and post-rotatory nystagmus were recorded with and without head-out water immersion. As water immersion reduces body weight by about 90% owing to buoyancy, it decreases somatosensory inputs. Thus water immersion can be used to simulate a weightless environment. Caloric nystagmus was enhanced significantly by water immersion; however, post-rotatory nystagmus was not. These findings demonstrate that caloric nystagmus is easily affected by water immersion which decreases somatosensory inputs, but that post-rotatory nystagmus is not.

TRACKING WITH THE ALEPH TIME PROJECTION CHAMBER

1991

The tracking performance of the ALEPH time projection chamber (TPC) has been studied using the data taken during the LEP (Large Electron-Positron Collider) running periods in 1989 and 1990. After careful correction of residual distortions and optimization of coordinate reconstruction algorithms, a single coordinate resolution of 173 mu m in the azimuthal and 740 mu m in the longitudinal direction is achieved. This results in a momentum resolution for the TPC alone of Delta p/p/sup 2/=0.0012 (GeV/c)/sup -1/. In combination with the ALEPH inner tracking chamber (ITC), a total momentum resolution of Delta p/p/sup 2/=0.0008 (GeV/c)/sup -1/, close to the design specifications, is reached. >

Regulation of serotonin release from the intestinal mucosa.

1991

Summary In the mammalian intestine serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is present in high concentrations in the enterochromaffin cells. The release of 5-HT from the intestinal mucosa is regulated by a complex pattern of neuronal and humoral inputs to the enterochromaffin cells. The enterochromaffin cells appear to be endowed with different inhibitory ( α 2 -adrenoceptors, GABA A - and GABA B -receptors, histamine H 3 -receptors, receptors for vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and somatostatin) as well as stimulatory receptors ( β -adrenoceptors, muscarine and nicotine receptors). The physiological significance of this complex system of receptors is suggested by experiments which demonstra…

Toxicokinetics of xenobiotics in zebrafish—Comparison between tap and river water

1991

Abstract 1. 1. Uptake and elimination of lindane, 3,4-dichloroaniline, phenol and 4-nitrophenol by the zebrafish Brachydanio rerio were investigated in tap water and in water of the river Rhine. 2. 2. The differences in bioconcentration of chemicals between the two water types did not exceed a factor of 2.5. 3. 3. Elimination kinetics were comparable in tap and river water. 4. 4. It can be concluded that water of the river Rhine does not influence the kinetics of the investigated xenobiotics.
