Glutamine synthetases of green and etiolated leaves ofSinapis alba : Evidence of the identity of the respective enzyme proteins.
1989
Studies on the glutamine synthetases (GS, EC 6.3.1.2) of green (GS2) and etiolated leaves (GSet) ofSinapis alba L. (cv. Steinacher) revealed striking similarities between the respective enzyme proteins. The enzymes showed corresponding chromatographic properties, both on dimethylaminoethyl-Sephacel and on hydroxylapatite columns. The purified GS proteins were also identical with regard to the molecular weight of their subunits. Isoelectrofocusing of pure GSet yielded two distinct polypeptide bands in the pH 5.6 region of the gels. This pattern corresponded to the two strong bands of GS2. Two charge variants of GS polypeptides could be detected by Western-blot analysis of the soluble protein…
ChemInform Abstract: Reactions of Benzothiete with Phosphorus Nucleophiles. A Novel Type of Arbuzov Rearrangement.
1989
The reaction of trialkylphosphites or related P-nucleophiles with benzothiete (1) leads to zwitter ionic species, which show an Arbuzov - like rearrangement to the products 4 and 7, respectively. New heterocyclic ring systems are generated in the case of cyclic esters. The normal SN2 reaction leads to the 1:2 adducts 9, whereas in an SN1 process the 1:1 adduct 13 is formed.

Comparative assessment of the toxicology of vitamin A and retinoids in man.
1989
As the title implies, any assessment of the toxic effects of vitamin A derivatives must distinguish between vitamin A in the truest sense, i.e. retinol, and retinoic acid and its synthetic derivatives. Just as no single description is universally applicable to the mode of action of vitamin A derivatives, so too do their toxic effects defy generalization. The recommendation made in 1982 by IUPAC [Eur. J. Biochem., 129 (1989) 1] to designate all derivatives with the typical structure of the vitamin as being retinoids may be chemically logical and correct but, when it comes to describing the effects and side-effects of vitamin A derivatives, it leads to misunderstandings. Retinol, which is fre…
Ganglioside GD3 shedding by human malignant melanoma cells
1989
Gangliosides appear to be important target molecules for immunological effector mechanisms on neuro-ectodermal tumors. Therefore in vitro studies were performed to examine whether ganglioside GD3, which is highly expressed on the cell surface of cultured human melanoma cells, is being shed into the culture medium. Measurable quantities of gangliosides GM3 and in particular GD3 were shed by the melanoma cells we have tested as detected on thin-layer chromatograms (TLC) stained with orcinol. Ganglioside GD3 was also evidenced by immunostaining with anti-GD3 MAb and by ELISA. The concentration of GD3 in the supernatant of human melanoma cells depended on the ganglioside pattern of the cell lin…
ISomerization of xylene: MINDO/3 study of the cyclization of benzenium cation into bicyclo[3.1.0]hexenyl cation
1989
Abstract A MINDO/3 study of thermal electrocyclic closing of the benzenium cation to form a bicyclo[3.1.0]hexenyl cation is presented. The calculated mechanism discusses the possibility of cyclization of xylenium cations on a silica catalyst or in superacid media. The structure and energy of the transition state, the enthalpies of isomerization and barriers of activation were calculated for the following processes: isomerization of 2,6-dimethylbenzenium cation into 2,6-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.0]hexenyl cation, isomerization of 2,4-dimethylbenzenium cation into 2,4-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.0]-hexenyl cation, and isomerization of benzenium cation into bicyclo[3.1.0]-hexenyl cation. Equilibrium and kin…
Experience in a Military Trauma Surgery Department with External Skeletal Fixation of Femur Fractures
1989
Our experience with external skeletal fixation of complex open and closed femoral fractures in 50 conventional trauma victims is presented. Different external fixator systems were primarily used in 26 patients and secondarily in 24 patients. The authors feel that early definitive femoral fracture care in civilian and military trauma victims employing unilateral external monofixation, which avoids casts, and allows improved wound management and early mobilization of the multitrauma patient, has decreased the complication rate commonly associated with internal fixation of open femoral fractures.

K+Λ photoproduction amplitudes incorporating absorptive effects and hypernuclear formation
1989
Incorporating final-state absorptive effects, we have reexamined the γp→K+Λ elementary process to obtain amplitudes which are used for describing photoproduction of hypernuclei. Our model not only resolves the persisting trouble of the small KNΛ coupling constant, but also yields agreement with cross-section data at higher energies. Using our amplitudes, we calculate angular distributions for the reaction16O(γ, K+)Λ16N. While the forward cross-section increases with increasing energy, the total cross-section is found to remain almost constant fromEγ=1.2 GeV through 2 GeV, which suggests that rather low photon energies hold promise for exploration of hypernuclear excitations.
The interface of clinical psychopharmacology and psychopathology.
1989
Four areas of common interest for clinical psychopharmacology and psychopathology are identified: (1) the diagnostic-based approach in clinical psychopharmacology; (2) the characterization of psychotropic drugs according the main psychopathologically defined target symptoms; (3) prediction of treatment response; (4) development of rating scales. The current state of research strategies in these areas is discussed and the need for new strategies is stressed. In particular, diagnosis-based research strategies in clinical psychopharmacology are not fully justified by empirical data; an alternative approach is discussed.
Potential and energy of some spheroidal charge distributions with azimuthal symmetry
1989
Abstract The Poisson equation is solved for three types of spheroidal charge distributions with azimuthal symmetry, namely, those depending on one cartesian coordinate, on the radial cylindrical coordinate and on the radial spherical coordinate. The energy of such distributions is found for the case of power functions of these coordinates and it has been normalized, computed and plotted for some low values of the exponent.
A procedure for predicting sorption equilibrium in ternary polymer systems from Flory–Huggins binary interaction parameters and the inversion point o…
1989
A procedure has been developed, based on the Flory–Huggins theory as generalized by Pouchlý, which permits the calculation of preferential (λ) and total (Y) sorption coefficients from previous information on the binary interaction parameters, χ, χ, and g12(ϕ10) and on the mixture composition at which the sign of λ inverts. The expressions obtained were applied to 10 cosolvent polymer systems for which experimental values of λ and Y are known. Practically in all the studied systems, the theoretical predictions are in fair accordance with the experimental data.
Some new (s,k,?)-translation transversal designs with non-abelian translation group
1989
For λ >1 and many values of s andk, we give a construction of (s,k,λ)-partitions of finite non-abelian p-groups and of Frobenius groups with non-abelian kernel. These groups are associated with translation transversl designs of the same parameters.
A Flory–Huggins thermodynamic approach for predicting sorption equilibrium in ternary polymer systems
1989
The Flory–Huggins theory as modified by Pouchlý has been applied to calculate preferential (λ) and total (Y) sorption coefficients for a ternary polymer system. The ternary interaction function (ϕ1ϕ2ϕ3GT(u1, ϕ3)) is described as the product of three independent binary functions. This expression allows prediction of λ and Y from binary interaction parameters χ, χ, g, g, and g12(ϕ10). Three ternary polymer systems are used to check the validity of the expression. Moreover for polymer systems in which the parameters g and/or g are unknown, a procedure to evaluate them has been developed and verified on systems for which sufficient experimental information is available.
Seismic and sedimentologic features of Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian syn-rift sediments on the eastern margin of the Lusitanian Basin
1989
Following deposition of widespread middle Oxfordian lacustrine carbonates and evaporites, the Lusitanian Basin was differentiated into a number of sub-basins. The Arruda sub-basin is a half graben basin situated some 30 km north of Lisbon. It accumulated over 2.5 km of Kimmeridgian siliciclastic sediments, and is bounded to the east by the Vila Franca de Xira fault zone. Carbonate deposition persisted over horsts along the fault zone from the Oxfordian to the early Kimmeridgian, and in places to the late Kimmeridgian, and shows a pronounced west-east facies zonation, with higher energy framestones and grainstones accumulating along the exposed western margins. Seismic data indicate a major …
Interleukin-2 receptor gene expression by bronchoalveolar lavage lymphocytes in pulmonary sarcoidosis.
1989
Current concepts of the immunopathogenesis of sarcoidosis favor a central role of activated, interleukin-2 (IL-2) producing helper T-cells at sites of inflammation. Normally, activated T-cells release IL-2 and express IL-2 receptors (IL-2R). IL-2R+ cells, however, are not uniformly found in patients with clinically active disease. To determine whether the lack of IL-2R+ cells is caused by a dysregulation of the IL-2R gene or by the mode of T-cell activation in pulmonary sarcoidosis, we quantified IL-2 and IL-2R m-RNA transcripts, IL-2 release, and IL-2R surface protein in peripheral blood lymphocytes of patients with sarcoidosis and normal control subjects before and after in vitro stimulat…

A total of 3587 data were collected over the range of 1 ⩽ θ ⩽ 30°; of these, 2391 (independent and with I⩾2σ( I )) were used in the structural analysis. The final R and R w residuals were 0.049 and 0.053, respective…
Trichosporon beigelii pneumonia in a neutropenic patient.
1989
A case of pulmonary infection caused by Trichosporon beigelii is reported in an asthmatic patient undergoing steroid treatment who developed fever and lung infiltrates. Arthroconidia and blastoconidia were isolated from repeated sputum, bronchial aspirate and telescopic catheter samples. The infection coincided with neutropenia resulting from pyrazolone treatment. The response to amphotericin B treatment was favourable.
Multiple activation pathways of benzene leading to products with varying genotoxic characteristics.
1989
Abstract Benzene and 13 potential metabolites were investigated for genotoxicity in Salmonella typhimurium and V79 Chinese hamster cells. In the presence of NADPH-fortified hepatic postmitochondrial fraction (S9 mix), benzene reverted his- S. typhimurium strains. The effect was strongest in strain TA1535. Among the potential metabolites, only the trans-1,2-dihydrodiol, in the presence of S9 mix, and the diol epoxides, in the presence and absence of S9 mix, proved mutagenic in this strain. The anti-diol epoxide was more potent than the syn-diastereomer. Both enantiomers of the anti-diastereomer showed similar activities. S9 mix did not appreciably affect the mutagenicity of the anti-diol epo…
Treatment of chronic type B hepatitis with recombinant alpha-interferon induces autoantibodies not specific for autoimmune chronic hepatitis.
1989
Recombinant human alpha-interferon is now under intensive investigation as therapy for chronic Type B hepatitis. Recent reports have suggested that prolonged alpha-interferon therapy may induce autoimmune reactions. We have evaluated the problem of autoimmunity related to alpha-interferon therapy by testing for 15 different antibodies in the sera of 31 patients treated with alpha-interferon. No patient had autoantibodies before treatment; 27 (87%) of 31 patients developed at least one autoantibody. Eleven patients had antinuclear antibodies and 21 had smooth muscle antibodies, both of which usually developed during alpha-interferon therapy. In contrast, antibodies to endocrine organs such a…
Cadmium binding proteins induced in exposed freshwater crayfish Procambarus clarkii.
1989
This work describes results on the characterization of cadmium binding proteins (Cd-BPs) obtained from cadmium exposed freshwater crayfish Procambarus clarkii. After acclimation to laboratory conditions, induction of Cd-BPs was achieved by water exposure at a concentration of 100 micrograms Cd/L during 2, 15, and 30 d. In accordance with the method followed by Engel and Brouwer, in each case two midgut glands were minced and homogenized in Tris-HC1 buffer with PMSF to prevent protease activity and DTT to maintain reducing conditions. The homogenate was centrifuged, heat treated, applied to a column of Sephadex G-75, and eluted with the same buffer (pH 8.6). Absorbances of the fractions coll…
Barkas effect with use of antiprotons and protons.
1989
The difference in the range of protons and antiprotons in matter, an example of the Barkas effect, is observed in a simple time-of-flight apparatus. The ranges of 5.9-MeV antiprotons and protons differ by about 6% in a degrader made predominantly of aluminum.

Accuracy of delivered versus preset minute ventilation of portable emergency ventilators.
1989
The accuracy of delivered minute volume (VE) ventilation of portable emergency ventilators (PEV) was evaluated. Five PEV from three manufacturers were adapted to an artificial lung for varying compliance and resistance. Each PEV was tested in the "no airmix" (pure oxygen) and "airmix" (approximately 60% oxygen) setting at different frequencies and VE. Measurement of delivered VE (VEdel) was made using a pneumotachograph and digital integration of the flow values greater than 1 min (maximal error +/- 2%). Maximal inspiratory pressure (Pinsp) was measured with a transducer. Two PEV from one manufacturer produced severe hyperventilation when used at low VE (i.e., in children). Two other PEV fr…
An enzyme caught in action: Direct imaging of hydrolytic function and domain formation of phospholipase A2 in phosphatidylcholine monolayers
1989
AbstractPhospholipase A2, a ubiquitous lipolytic enzyme that actively catalyses hydrolysis of phospholipids, has been studied as a model for enzyme-substrate reactions, as a membrane structural probe, and as a model for lipid-protein interactions. Its mechanism of action remains largely controversial. We report here for the first time direct microscopic observation of the lipolytic action of fluorescently marked phospholipase A2 (Naja naja naja) against phosphatidylcholine monolayers in the lipid phase transition region. Under these conditions, phospholipase A2 is shown to target and hydrolyse solid-phase lipid domains of L-α-dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine. In addition, after a critical ext…
Cadmium, mercury, and lead effects on gill tissue of freshwater crayfishProcambarus clarkii (girard)
1989
Intermolt adult crayfish P. clarkii were used for this work. After acclimatization to laboratory conditions crayfish were exposed to sublethal concentrations of cadmium, mercury, and lead for 96 h. Gills of control and exposed crayfish were removed and ATPase activity and oxygen uptake rate were determined. Structural damage of gill filaments was also observed. Gill tissue respiration rates were measured for individual crayfish using a Gilson differential respirometer. Lead causes a decrease of gill oxygen uptake, but neither cadmium nor mercury seems to affect it at the concentrations employed. Although all metals studied alter gill filament structure, lead damage is the most apparent. In …
Lau rings: In-register incoherent superposition of radial self-images
1989
Abstract We describe an optical method for obtaining in-register, incoherent superposition of self-images, with radial symmetry. That is, the Lau effect is implemented, either at infinity or at finite distances, in the form of bright and dark rings of high visibility. This is applied for visualizing radially phase structures, with good-signal-to-noise ratio.
Multiphoton One-step Ionization of Helium at 1064 nm
1989
Abstract The multiphoton ionization of helium by a strong radiation field having a wavelength of 1064 nm and a field intensity up to 5 × 1014 W cm −2 is considered within a non-perturbative treatment partially accounting for the electron-electron correlations in the initial bound state and approximately for the Coulomb interaction between the residual ion and the ejected electron in the final state. Only single-electron transitions are considered, the main emphasis being on the field polarization effects. The obtained results are compared with the few results available in the literature in the same regime as well as with very recent experimental findings. In particular, the calculated photo…
Line shifts and broadenings in polarizable liquids
1989
We present a new dynamical derivation of the approximation used by Thompson, Schweizer, and Chandler and by Ho/ye and Stell for the frequency dependent polarizability of a quantum fluid with harmonically bound dipole moments; the Drude model. The derivation is the same for classical and quantum liquids—as is of course the result which agrees with that of these authors. We then refine the theory by taking account of the limited number of energy levels available, i.e., we replace the harmonic approximation by a two level approximation, for the target atom. This leads to a prefactor ω0I/ω0 in the line shift of an impurity atom in a fluid computed by Chandler, Schweitzer, and Wolynes: ω0 and ω0…

13C nuclear magnetic resonance study of some phosphinolipids: Assignments and conformational studies
1989
13C chemical shifts and 31P, 13C spin-spin coupling constants are reported for six model phosphinates and eight synthetic phosphinolipids. The complex spectra of the synthetic phosphinolipids could be assigned from increments and couplings derived from the model compounds. Based on these investigations the 3J(PC) couplings of 7–15 Hz indicate a preferential trans orientation of the respective head-group carbon relative to the phosphorus. This behaviour is similar to that of natural phosphatidylcholine lipids.
Epileptic seizures and cerebrovascular disease
1989
- A series of 88 patients with completed stroke was selected in which heralding, early and late seizures were distinguished according to their onset. Relationships between CT scan and clinical EEG data are discussed with particular emphasis on possible mechanisms of seizures. Thus, small emboli or haemodynamic factors are stressed in the cases of heralding seizures, metabolic disturbances with cytotoxic effects in early seizures and chronic epileptic focus in late seizures.
Ambulatory follow-up of aortic dissection by transesophageal two-dimensional and color-coded Doppler echocardiography.
1989
Follow-up of 18 patients with aortic dissection (five with type I, one with type II, 11 with type III dissection according to DeBakey) by transesophageal, two-dimensional and color-coded Doppler echocardiography showed a persistence of the false lumen in five of seven patients (71%) after surgery and in nine of 11 patients (82%) after medical therapy. In two patients treated with surgery, the dissected part of the aorta had been resected, whereas in two patients treated medically, a progressive and complete obliteration of the false lumen was observed. In the false lumen, thrombus formation was absent in four, localized in four, and progressive in six patients. Flow within the false lumen c…
Leptonic CP violation with massless neutrinos
1989
Abstract Leptonic CP violation may arise in the SU(2) ⊗ U(1) theory even if the neutrinos are strictly massless and, as a result, it is potentially large. Theoretical scenarios include isosinglet neutral heavy leptons which are present in many extensions of the standard electroweak theory such as superstring inspired models. We discuss in detail the nature of this CP violation and show that it can occur in a two-generation model. Possible effects are briefly discussed.
Genotoxicity of 1,4-benzoquinone and 1,4-naphthoquinone in relation to effects on glutathione and NAD(P)H levels in V79 cells.
1989
1,4-Benzoquinone is cytotoxic in V79 Chinese hamster cells and induces gene mutations and micronuclei. The cell-damaging effects of quinones are usually attributed to thiol depletion, oxidation of NAD(P)H, and redox-cycling involving the formation of semiquinone radicals and reactive oxygen species. To elucidate the role of these mechanisms in the genotoxicity of 1,4-benzoquinone, we measured various genotoxic effects, cytotoxicity, and the levels of glutathione, NADPH, NADH, and their oxidized forms all in the same experiment. 1,4-Naphthoquinone, which does not induce gene mutations in V79 cells, was investigated for comparative reasons. The quinones had a similar effect on the levels of c…
