Osmotic pressure of catenanes in solution

1989

We propose a nonuniversal scaling for the osmotic pressure in the case of concatenating ring polymers. The size exponent depends on the molecular weight of the catenans. The effect is more significant the shorter and the stiffer the molecules are.

NON-PERTURBATIVE VACUUM WAVE-FUNCTIONAL AND CLOSED STRING EQUATIONS OF MOTION

1989

The anomalous conformal dependence of the vacuum wave-functional is studied in the non-perturbative regime of the closed bosonic string theory. It is shown that the vanishing of the vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor trace leads to the implementation of a suitable variational condition on the wave-functional, provided that the dilaton condensate be taken as a conformal compensator for the graviton condensate of the embedding space.

Observation and analysis ofE mesons in $$\bar p$$ p annihilation at rest in H2 gas

1989

Antiproton-proton annihilation at rest in a gaseous H2 target at NTP into the final state π+ π−K± π∓ (K0) with an undetectedK0 or\(\bar K^0 \) has been investigated. We observe theE(1420) resonance in the invariant mass spectrum (K0)missK± π∓ with massME=1413±8 MeV/c2 and widthГE=62 ± 16MeV/c2 and find evidence for the production of thef1(1285). The absolute branching ratio of\(\bar p\)p → π+ π−E0,E0 →K0LK±π∓ at (61±6)%P wave annihilation is (3.0±0.9)·10−4 of all annihilations. The observed suppression of theE production fromP wave with respect to theS wave together with some simple selection rules suggest that the quantum numbers of theE(1420) areJpc=0−+ and not I++.

Androgen hydroxylation catalysed by a cell line (SD1) that stably expresses rat hepatic cytochrome P-450 PB-4 (IIB1).

1989

Androgen hydroxylation catalysed by Chinese hamster fibroblast SD1 cells, which stably express cytochrome P-450 form PB-4, the rat P450IIB1 gene product, was assessed and compared to that catalysed by purified cytochrome P-450 PB-4 isolated from rat liver. SD1 cell homogenates catalysed the NADPH-dependent hydroxylation of androstenedione and testosterone with a regioselectivity very similar to that purified by P-450 PB-4 (16 beta-hydroxylation/16 alpha-hydroxylation = 6.0-6.8 for androstenedione; 16 beta/16 alpha = 0.9 for testosterone). Homogenates prepared from the parental cell line V79, which does not express detectable levels of P-450 PB-4 or any other cytochrome P-450, exhibited no a…

Very narrow-bandwidth tunable infrared difference frequency generation with injection-locked dye lasers

1989

Two flashlamp pumped dye lasers of very high spectral quality are mixed in a LiIO3 crystal to generate a tunable infrared beam through the difference frequency mixing. Thanks to the injection-locking process of the pulsed dye lasers leading to a linewidth of 6 MHz with peak powers of about 10 kW, we obtain an IR beam tunable from 3.5 to 5.9 μm with a peak power of 40 W and a linewidth of 9 MHz. As an application we present a spectrum of N2O obtained by differential absorption near 1880 cm−1. The lines of thisQ-branch are Doppler limited at the working pressure (102 Pa).

A Comparative Ultrastructural Investigation of Some Nannochloris Species (Chlorococcales) with Particular Reference to the Systematic Position of Nan…

1989

Nanochlorum eucaryotum was described by Wilhelm et al. (1982) as a new algal species with an uncertain taxonomic position. Whereas some features were chlorococcacean, others suggested an isolated position in the sense of a “pre-eucaryote” (Wilhelm, 1983; Zahn, 1984; Geisert et al., 1987). Our comparative ultrastructural, physiological and biochemical examinations of coccoid microalgae (Menzel, 1988) gave no arguments for the separation of Nanochlorum eucaryotum from the genus Nannochloris. This paper is concerned with the ultrastructural composition of the cell wall and mode of reproduction in Nanochlorum eucaryotum as well as in three Nannochloris species. The systematic position of Nanoch…

Heat capacities, volumes and solubilities of pentanol in aqueous surfactant solutions

1989

Apparent molar heat capacities and volumes of pentanol (PentOH) 0.05m in dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC), dodecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) and dodecylamine hydrochloride (DAC) micellar solutions were measured at 25°C. They were assumed to approach the standard infinite dilution values and rationalized by means of previously reported equations. The distribution constant between the aqueous and the micellar phase and heat capacity and volume of pentanol in both phases were thus derived. The results show that the presence of methyl groups on the surfactant head group does not appreciably influence the apparent molar volume and heat capacity of pentanol in micellar phase and the…

How Do French Junior Secondary Schools Operate ? Academic Achievement, Grading and Streaming of Students

1989

International audience; This paper is concerned with the operation of Junior Secondary Schools in France. Students' school careers have been analysed in three sequential and cumulative components: student progress in learning in the junior secondary school, student grading by teachers, and student streaming, i.e., admission, or not, into a general form 3. For each of the three mechanisms described above, the authors examine whether they are influenced by the schooling context, which schooling context (school and/or classroom), and which characteristics of those contexts it is relevant to consider. Finally, they focus on the process by which the large social inequalities visible after the pu…

Shear and nonisothermal elongational characterization of a liquid crystalline polymer

1989

A commercial liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) sample was characterized both in shear and in nonisothermal elongational flow over a wide range of temperatures (240–350°C). The LCP sample employed was a copolyesteramide of 2,6 hydroxynaphthoic acid, terephthalic acid, and aminophenol manufactured by Celanese and commercially known as Vectra B950. The viscosity decreases dramatically at temperatures above the crystal-nematic transition of the polymer. At lower temperatures, the extrusion of the sample is mainly due to plastic flow. Die-swell values are very small and contraction of the extrudate is also revealed, but the sample shows high elasticity. The polymer is not spinnable at very low te…

Inhibition of DNA synthesis in chick embryo retinas, in vitro, by a factor from fetal bovine serum

1989

Fetal bovine serum inhibited deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis in chick embryo retina explants. The inhibitory activity was precipitated from fetal bovine serum by 45% saturated ammonium sulfate and isolated by means of Sephadex G-100 and Bio-Gel P-60 columns as a peak with an apparent molecular weight of 7000 Da. DNA-inhibiting activity was heat- and acid-stable and was destroyed by dithiothreitol and alkaline treatment. The purified factor inhibited similarly both DNA synthesis and thymidine kinase activity; 50% inhibitory effect was found with 160 ng, 17 h after the addition into the incubation medium.

Antagonism of calcium by zinc in guinea-pig isolated taenia caeci and trachealis muscle

1989

1 In guinea-pig isolated taenia caeci and trachealis bathed in a K+-rich, Ca2+-free medium, CaCl2 (0.01-10 mM) produced a concentration-dependent contraction. Zn2+ (0.01-1 mM), Cd2+ (0.01-1 mM), verapamil (0.01-100 microM) and trifluoperazine (1-100 microM) were effective antagonists of CaCl2-induced responses. 2 Zn2+ and Cd2+ in concentrations from 0.01 to 1 mM were without effect on the tone of taenia and trachea in normal Tris solution. Conversely, Zn2+ and Cd2+, in concentrations of 1 mM, caused contraction of these tissues in a K+-rich, Ca2+-free medium. Zn2+ (1 mM)-induced contractions of taenia and trachea were completely inhibited by verapamil (10 microM). 3 In taenia and trachea sk…

Social structure in termite societies

1989

The societies of Isoptera and Hymenoptera differ in two general features. 1. The termite societies are bisexual. From a primitive symmetry between both sexes, many asymmetries appeared during the course of their evolution. These asymmetries are related either to a sexual dimorphism, or a biased sex ratio, or both, and are differently expressed in the separate castes of a given species. 2. The hemimetabolous development allows a termite to take part in the social tasks before the end of its postembryonic development, and even to reproduce at a larval stage (neoteny). Thus Isoptera exhibit a polymorphism of larvae, unlike Hymenoptera where a polymorphism of imagoes is observed. Moreover, an i…

Isolation and partial characterization of a cytochrome-o complex from chromatophores of the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum FR1.

1989

A cytochrome-o complex was isolated from chromatophores of photoheterotrophically grown Rhodospirillum rubrum FR1. The enzyme was extracted with the non-denaturating detergent taurodeoxycholate and subsequently purified by sucrose-density-gradient centrifugation and gel-permeation HPLC. The complex contains two types of cytochromes, one of them cytochrome o, and two copper atoms. It catalyzes the reduction of molecular oxygen, when N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine or ubiquinol 10 are offered as electron donors. The oxidase activity is inhibited by cyanide, carbon monoxide and 2-heptyl-2-hydroxyquinoline N-oxide. The molecular mass of the protein is 136 +/- 15 kDa. The subunit analys…

The international debt problem: An analysis of the Brady plan

1989

Recently the American Treasury Secretary, Nicholas Brady, launched a new initiative in which he proposed reducing the developing countries’ bank debt. What are the elements of the plan, and which countries would benefit? What problems does it entail? Can it bring about a decisive improvement in the international debt situation of the developing countries? The following two articles attempt to answer these questions.

1989

Abstract Synthesis and pharmacology of sopromidine (( R )-7) and ( S )- 7 , 2 position isomers of impromidine derived from the enantiomeric α-methylhistamines, are reported. The enantiomers of 7 show high stereoselectivity at the atrial H 2 -receptor of the guinea-pig. ( R )- 7 is revealed to be a full H 2 -agonist with 7.4-fold potency relative to histamine, while ( S )- 7 is a competitive H 2 -antagonist.

High-Frequency rotablation of occluded coronary artery during heart catheterization

1989

High-frequency rotation atherectomy of an occluded left circumflex coronary artery was performed in a 45-year-old man. Over a 0.009 inch flexible tip steel wire a diamond-coated brass burr fasten to a flexible drive shaft that rotates and tracks was advanced. The drive shaft was connected to a turbine and driven by compressed air with 150,000 rpm. After rotablation of the posterior lateral branch over 3 cm with a 1.5 mm burr and rotablation with a 1.75 mm burr of the posterior branch of the left circumflex coronary artery the vessel was reopened with a smooth surface without perforation and dissection. 24 h control and 6 mo control revealed an open coronary vessel. Principle and analytical applications of resonance lonization mass spectrometry

1989

Resonance ionization mass spectrometry (RIMS) is a very sensitive analytical technique for the detection of trace elements. This method is based on the excitation and ionization of atoms with resonant laser light followed by mass analysis. It allows element and, in some cases, isotope selective ionization and is applicable to most of the elements of the periodic table. A high selectivity can be achieved by applying three step photoionization of the elements under investigation and an additional mass separation for an unambiguous isotope assignment. An effective facility for resonance ionization mass spectrometry consists of three dye lasers which are pumped by two copper vapor lasers and of…

Glucose polymer syrup attenuates prolonged endurance exercise-induced vasopressin release

1989

We investigated the effect of glucose and glucose polymer ingestion on plasma arginine vasopressin (pAVP) levels, on plasma osmolality (p-osm), and on performance during two prolonged endurance events. The study subjects were 37 Finnish elite endurance athletes, of whom 18 were orienteers and 19 cross-country skiers. Plasma AVP increased in both combined glucose and glucose polymer groups, but the increase in the glucose polymer group was significantly smaller (P less than 0.001) than that in the glucose group. A significant change in p-osm caused a significant change in pAVP and vice versa. Both the orienteers and the skiers on glucose polymer tended to have more success in the competition…

A Positive Definite Advection Scheme Obtained by Nonlinear Renormalization of the Advective Fluxes

1989

Abstract A new method is developed to obtain a conservative and positive definite advection scheme that produces only small numerical diffusion. Advective fluxes are computed utilizing the integrated flux form of Tremback et al. These fluxes are normalized and then limited by upper and lower values. The resulting advection equation is numerically solved by means of the usual upstream procedure. The proposed treatment is not restricted to the integrated flux form but may also be applied to other known advection algorithms which are formulated in terms of advective fluxes. Different numerical tests are presented illustrating that the proposed scheme strongly reduces numerical and diffusion an…

Evidence of a specialized transport mechanism for the intestinal absorption of baclofen

1989

Absorption of the spasmolytic drug baclofen in three selected intestinal segments of living anaesthetized rats in situ, is shown to be a specialized transport mechanism obeying Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Equation parameters were calculated through different procedures, whose features are discussed. A computer method based on the integrated form of Michaelis-Menten equation which reproduces the entire time course of drug absorption from the data found in three intestinal perfusion series at different initial concentrations, yielded Vm and Km values of 12.0 mg h-1 and 8.0 mg, respectively, in the mean segment of the small intestine, a rather selective absorption site for baclofen. On properties of the iterative maximum likelihood reconstruction method

1989

In this paper, we continue our investigations6 on the iterative maximum likelihood reconstruction method applied to a special class of integral equations of the first kind, where one of the essential assumptions is the positivity of the kernel and the given right-hand side. Equations of this type often occur in connection with the determination of density functions from measured data. There are certain relations between the directed Kullback–Leibler divergence and the iterative maximum likelihood reconstruction method some of which were already observed by other authors. Using these relations, further properties of the iterative scheme are shown and, in particular, a new short and elementar…

Use and limitations of ICP-OES in wine analysis

1989

At present, some 50 inorganic components in wine can be detected, of which 8 are mineral matter at concentrations down to 1 mg/l, about 25 are trace elements with concentrations of 0.001–0.1 mg/l, and about 20 are ultratrace elements at concentrations below 1 μg/1. It has been shown that ICP-OES, a typical multielement detection method, permits the fast and reliable simultaneous determination of whole range of these inorganic species in wine, and thus can help in solving practical problems in wine manufacture. For instance, the metal content of wine can be checked, and corrosion and contamination monitored. Ten trace elements (Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, V, Zn) which may be toxic or to …

Effect of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide on the release of serotonin from the in vitro vascularly perfused small intestine of guinea pig.

1989

Isolated segments of the guinea pig small intestine were vascularly perfused and the release of endogenous serotonin (5-HT) and its metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) into the portal vein was measured. All test substances were intraarterially perfused. Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP, 1 pmol/l-100 nmol/l) inhibited the spontaneous release of 5-HT and 5-HIAA. The maximal inhibitory effect (about 60%) was seen at 100 pmol/l. The effect of VIP on the spontaneous release of 5-HT and 5-HIAA was not changed in the presence of 1 mumol/l tetrodotoxin (TTX). Raising intraluminal pressure by 500 Pa for 5 min increased the release of 5-HT and 5-HIAA by about 25%. Raising the intralu…

Pulmonary contusion: CT vs plain radiograms.

1989

In experimentally induced pulmonary contusions, CT (n = 27) and chest X-ray (n = 24) findings were compared with the findings at autopsy. Twenty-seven of 27 (100%) pulmonary contusions were visible by CT immediately after trauma compared with 9 of 24 (37.5%) in the chest X-ray. After 30 min follow-up, 18 of 24 (75%) lesions were seen on the plain film. Five of 24 (21%) contusions escaped detection on conventional radiographs. Computed tomography underestimated lesion size in 5 of 60 (8%) measurements, conventional radiographs in 21 of 36 (58%) measurements. Pathological examination never revealed a pulmonary contusion that was not demonstrated by CT. Therefore, pulmonary contusion seems unl…

Polymides 3a and 3b with stiff-chains bearing trioxaoctyl or tetraoxaundecyl side chains were synthesized and characterized. The polycondensation was done with pyromellitic anhydride and N,N′-bis(1-imidazolylcarbonyl)-2,5-(1,4,7-trioxaoctyl)- or 2,5-(1,4,7,10-tetraoxaundecyl)-1,4-phenylenediamine (2a or 2b). 3b, being sufficiently soluble, was characterized by 13C NMR spectroscopy. The results of IR and 13C NMR spectroscopy prove the presence of the correct imide structure. In solid state 3a and 3b form layered structures with the side chains being in a disordered state.

Monte Carlo simulation of DNA electrophoresis

1989

This paper describes an attempt to study the electrophoresis mobility of a DNA molecule in a gel by means of a Monte Carlo simulation. We find that the electrophoresis mobility mu can be well described by the empirical equation mu v kappa 1/N + kappa 2E2 with N being the number of monomers of the model chain and E being the applied field. For small E the data can merge into the linear response result mu = kappa 1/N. The paper also discusses necessary extensions of the present approach.
