Production of macrophage-, granulocyte-, granulocyte-macrophage- and multi-colony-stimulating factor by peripheral blood cells

1989

The specific cell sources and signals for induction of various colony-stimulating factors (CSF) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), purified T lymphocyte and monocyte (Mo) populations have been investigated. In the absence of exogenous activating stimuli, human PBMC, T cells and Mo failed to produce stable cytoplasmic mRNA for CSF for macrophages (M-CSF or CSF-1), for granulocytes (G-CSF), for granulocytes and macrophages (GM-CSF) and for multilineage CSF [multi-CSF, interleukin (IL) 3] and thus failed to release CSF proteins. However, after stimulation with phorbol myristate acetate and phytohemagglutinin, M-, G-, GM- and multi-CSF mRNA became detectable in PBMC, resulting in the…

Mössbauer study and non-linear excitations in the antiferromagnetic chain of Rb2Mn1−xFexF5*H2O (x≤0.50)

1989

Mossbauer effect measurements have been performed on the quasi 1-d antiferromagnetic solid solutions of Rb2Mn1−xFexF5*H2O (x=0.50) as a function of temperature. Particular attention was paid to the region very close to the Neel point. The experimental spectra show definite relaxation effects which are attributed to short-range order with temperature dependent relaxation times. The solitor, model of non-linear excitations was applied. Experimental data on Fe(III) confirm the predicted exponential temperature dependence of the thermal excitation of moving domain walls.

Interleukin 2 and soluble interleukin 2-receptor secretion defect in vitro in newly diagnosed type I diabetic patients

1989

In this study, we investigated whether an interleukin 2 (IL-2) secretion defect by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) after in vitro stimulation with phytohemagglutinin (PHA-M) occurs in either newly diagnosed or long-standing type I (insulin-dependent) diabetic patients and whether it is accompanied by a dysregulation of soluble IL-2— receptor (IL-2RS) production. PBMC cultures (2.5 × 106 cells), unstimulated or stimulated with PHA-M (25 μg/ml), from 20 type I diabetic patients (10 with time since onset <3 mo and 10 with long-term diabetes of <3 yr) and 10 control subjects were studied for the production of IL-2 and IL-2RS in their respective supernatants. Polarization transfer in then 2 P-excitation of alkali atoms by longitudinally polarized electrons

1989

In (ns — np)-excitation of alkali atoms by polarized electrons some of the spin orientation of the primary electron beam is transfered to the excited atoms because of exchange collisions. In the present work the polarization transfer to Na, K, Rb, and Cs respectively is studied by looking for the circular light polarization of (np — ns)-decay radiation emitted in forward direction following impact excitation by a beam of longitudinally polarized electrons. Maximum polarization transfers are observed at collision energies with values about 1.5 times that ofnp-thresholds. The transfer increases with increasing atomic number. In case of (6s — 6p)-excitation of cesium 45% of primary electron sp…

Effect of chronic exercise on glucose uptake and activities of glycolytic enzymes measured regionally in rat heart.

1989

Regional glucose uptake in perfused hearts, and the activities of several glycolytic enzymes contributing to the glucose metabolism in perfused and nonperfused hearts were studied in male and female rats after 8–9 weeks of swimming training. The left ventricular glucose uptake showed a transmural gradient in the sedentary animals, the subendocardial uptake being 30% and 12% higher than that of the subepicardial layer in the males and females, respectively. Swimming exercise abolished the left ventricular glucose uptake gradient in male rats, and in female rats an opposite gradient was found, the subepicardial uptake being 23% higher than the subendocardial uptake. The activities of phosphof…

AF-DX 116 differentiates between prejunctional muscarine receptors located on noradrenergic and cholinergic nerves.

1989

Prejunctional affinity constants of the cardioselective muscarine receptor antagonist AF-DX 116 (11-[(2-[(diethyl-amino)methyl]-1-piperidinyl)acetyl]-5,11-dihydro-6 H-pyrido [2,3-b] [1,4] benzodiazepine-6-one) were determined for muscarine autoreceptors on cholinergic nerves of the guinea-pig ileum and for heteroreceptors on noradrenergic nerves of the rat heart and guinea-pig iris. AF-DX 116 antagonized with low affinity the muscarinic inhibition induced by arecaidine propargyl ester of the stimulation-evoked [3H]acetylcholine overflow (pA2 6.74) from the guinea-pig ileum. In contrast, AF-DX 116 was more potent in antagonizing the methacholine-induced inhibition of the stimulation-evoked […

Interobserver Agreement in the Diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis

1989

• Interobserver agreement in the clinical diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) among six neurologists was evaluated. Three of them participated in a study of the clinical diagnosis of MS, the Italian Multicenter Study (IMS). The raters examined the clinical forms of MS of 50 patients randomly selected from among 430 patients recruited from the IMS. For each patient, neurologists were asked to make a diagnosis according to the McDonald-Halliday classification system of MS. The overall agreement on the diagnosis (MS present or absent) was fair, with no difference noted between the two groups of raters. Considering the six diagnostic levels instead, the reliability was higher for the neurologi…

Hepatitis B vaccination of relatives of hepatitis B virus DNA positive carriers: an experience with plasma-derived vaccine.

1989

We assessed in a western population the efficacy of a plasma-derived hepatitis B vaccine in relatives of highly infectious hepatitis B virus (HBV) carriers. A consecutive group of 103 HbsAg, anti-HBs and anti-HBc negative household relatives of 45 HBV-DNA positive chronic carriers received a 5 micrograms dose of plasma-derived vaccine at 0, 1, 2 and 12 months. Protective levels of immunity developed in 101 subjects (97.8%) 3 months after boosting. Low responders to the vaccine were mostly found among parents and spouses of carriers, whilst offspring and siblings were usually high responders. The main discriminant in predicting a good response was age below 12 years. Hyporesponsiveness did n…

Three-state quantum systems: A procedure for the solution

1989

An iterative method to obtain a solution of the differential equation $$i\dot a = \hat H(t)a$$ , with Ĥ a 3×3 Hermitian matrix anda the unknown vector, is proposed. The procedure is particularly suitable for computer implementation and, as an example, has been applied to find the excitation probability of a three-level atom after the synchronous passage of two laser pulses each almost resonant with a pair of atomic levels.

Electrochemical oxidation of 2,4,5-triaryl-substituted pyrroles.II. Oxidative dimerization of 4,5-diphenyl-2-mesitylylpyrrole

1989

2,4,5-Triaryl-substituted pyrroles lead, upon chemical or electrochemical oxidation, to an intermediate β-β'-dimer, which, in the course of the reaction, undergoes further oxidation to a tetracyclic derivative. To improve the selectivity towards the uncyclized dimer the oxidation of a triarylpyrrole in which the ortho positions of the phenyl group in position 2 are hindered by the presence of methyl groups was attempted. The cyclization was hindered, but an α-β'-dimer was obtained as the major product. An unexspected isomeric α-β'-dimer, in which the mesitylyl group is shifted into the β position of the pyrrole ring which undergoes the oxidation, was obtained in minor amounts. Electroanalyt…

The charge radii of $^{198}$Pt - $^{183}$Pt

1989

The changes of the mean-square charge radii have been measured for198Pt-183Pt by means of resonance ionization mass spectroscopy (RIMS) at the new on-line isotope separator ISOLDE-3/CERN. As in the case of the neighbouring isotopes of Au and Hg, a strong nuclear deformation of ¦β2¦ −-0.24 is reached at the neutron mid-shell nucleus183Pt, but no indication for a sharp shape transition is observed from the study of the isotope shifts.

Motoneuron and muscle fibers interact on the motor unit level, whereby discharge characteristics from the neuron imposed on the muscle seem to play a major role. Within the unit all muscle fibers are biochemically homogeneous and display a high degree of plasticity under different functional demands. To distinguish the existing different units rationals are listed that classify the units by physiological and histochemical parameters. Furthermore the review summarizes the available knowledge on the importance of activity patterns--as a biological principle--involved in the control of phenotypic expression of innervated and denervated muscle. Vitamin A deficiency. New knowledge on diagnosis, consequences and therapy

1989

Due to the rapid development of biochemical analyses in the last 10 years different substances like vitamin A, with an apparent clarified metabolism and action, were re-estimated. As a result, new knowledge was presented which could be essential for human health. Some details and consequences are reviewed in this paper. Marginal deficiency, which also may occur in industrialized nations, cannot be determined with certainty by usual blood analyses. The reasons for marginal deficiency are either different diseases or unbalanced nutrition. From epidemiological research it is argued that low vitamin A intake is associated with a higher incidence of cancer in different tissues. However, vitamin …

Der Supinatorfettkörper bei Frakturen des Ellbogengelenkes

1989

The position of the supinator fat pad is regarded as a valuable sign in fractures of the elbow. In our patients the pad was visible in 277 out of 337 cases (82%). The sign was positive in only 27 out of 55 proximal fractures of the radius (sensitivity 0.49). There was no correlation between the severity of the fracture and the sign. There was marked variation in the distance between the pad and the radius, depending on age, build and projection. Our results indicate that the sign is not suitable for the diagnosis of fracture of the elbow.

Electro-produced slow positrons

1989

During the last 6 years it has been demonstrated that electro-produced intense beams of slow positrons are possible. High energy electrons from an accelerator generate bremsstrahlung in a thick conversion target of high element number Z. The photons produce electronpositron pairs and a small fraction of the positrons may be moderated to thermal energies. A review is given of the existing slow positron beam lines using this technique. At accelerator energies of 100 MeV total conversion efficiencies of several slow positrons per 106 primary electrons have been obtained, resulting in average intensities of several 109 slow positrons per second or more than 105 slow positrons in pulses having a…

Sensor Applications Of Optical Fibre Resonant Rings Based On Polarisation Sensitive Couplers

1989

Optical fibre resonant rings based on polarisation sensitive couplers give rise to a set of new resonant configurations. Two of them exhibit interesting sensor applications since small changes of the polarisation state produce large effects on the output, due to the resonant characteristics of the system. The sensor arrangements proposed have the advantage of requiring no drift compensation of the optical fibre interferometer against environmental fluctuations, since the parameters used to determine the measurand are the finesse and the visibility but not a phase change. Thus, the system can be used to sense low frequency measurands. Among the particular sensor applications that can be sugg…

Analysis of a soluble lipid-protein complex carrying endogenous 11-cis retinaldehyde from bovine retinal pigment epithelium.

1989

A soluble lipid-protein complex in bovine retinal pigment epithelium is shown to carry endogenous 11-cis retinaldehyde, in the extent of 15% of the total 11-cis retinaldehyde found in this tissue. The complex, analyzed with respect to its chemical composition, exhibits a lipid composition close resembling the lipid composition of the rod outer segment membrane; the SDS-PAGE evidences the presence of a number of protein bands, two of which of 34 and 27 kDa appear glycoproteins. Finally, the lipid-protein complex exhibits a discrete level of a Cathepsin D-like protease activity. From the above, the possibility is discussed that the soluble lipid-protein complex could represent some phagolysos…

The La antigen shuttles between the nucleus and the cytoplasm in CV-1 cells

1989

Recently we established a monoclonal antibody against the La-protein (Bachmann et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, 83, 7770, 1986). The antibody gives a nuclear speckled type staining and, in addition, a perinuclear cytoplasmic staining on cultured cells in immunofluorescence microscopy. After inhibition of RNA synthesis the La-protein is transported into the cytoplasm. After prolonged inhibition it returns into the nucleus forming large growing speckles. The transport into the nucleus apparently depends on glycosylation.
