Analytic vectors, anomalies and star representations

It is hinted that anomalies are not really anomalous since (at least in characteristic examples) they can be related to a lack of common analytic vectors for the Hamiltonian and the observables. We reanalyze the notions of analytic vectors and of local representations of Lie algebras in this light, and show how the notion of preferred observables introduced in the deformation (star product) approach to quantization may help give an anomaly-free formulation to physical problems. Finally, some remarks are made concerning the applicability of these considerations to field theory, especially in two dimensions.
Regulation of pteridine biosynthesis and aromatic amino acid hydroxylation in Drosophila melanogaster

The relationship between high dietary levels of aromatic amino acid and regulation of pteridines in Drosophila eyes was examined by measuring changes in pool levels of six pterins in the wild type and mutants and amino acid pool levels in flies that carry mutations for pteridine biosynthesis. The effect upon relative viability and developmental times was also analyzed; relative viability was affected by L-phenylalanine, L-tryptophan, and L-tyrosine in decreasing order and the D-amino acids had little or no effect. Magnetic order in a Kondo lattice: A neutron scattering study of CeCu2Ge2

Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies of the Kondo lattice CeCu2Ge2 were performed. AtTN=4.1 K an incommensurate magnetic order develops with an ordering wave vectorq0=(0.28, 0.28, 0.54) and an ordered moment µs=0.74 µB. The crystalline electric field splits the 4f1-J-multiplet of the Ce ion into a ground state doublet and a quartet at 191 K. The wave function of the ground state yields an ordered moment of 1.54µB. Thus, due to the onset of the formation of a Kondo singlet the magnetic moment is considerably reduced. The magnetic relaxation rate Λ was investigated via quasielastic neutron scattering. Abstract In this investigation, the effect of bialaphos (phosphinothricyl-alanyl-alanine) on the enzymes involved in NH4 +-assimilation - glutamine synthetase, glutamine-2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase, glutamate dehydrogenase - is examined and compared to the effect of phosphinothricin (glufosinate) on the same enzymes. Bialaphos was given to whole plants (in vivo) and to leaf homogenate (in vitro). The investigation showed that bialaphos has an inhibiting effect on glutamine synthetase in vivo, but not in vitro. Inhibition of the precipitation of barium salts in sodium dodecyl sulfate/0.1 M HCl/n-pentanol microemulsions and liquid crystals

Abstract The phase ternary diagram of the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/0.1 M HCl/n-pentanol system is studied. Three monophase regions were observed: water rich and n-pentanol rich microemulsions, and a liquid crystal. These media have a strong ability to control the rate of crystal growth of barium sulfate and barium dodecyl sulfate, the precipitation being totally inhibited in the liquid crystal region.

In the terrestrial amphipod Orchestia cavimana, investigations of the variations of the total hemolymphatic calcium during the normal molt cycle revealed that a calcium balance is maintained in intermolt, as observed in numerous crustaceans. During premolt, hypercalcemia occurs, related to the marked calcium reabsorption from the old cuticle, which may promote the storage of a part of this calcium within the midgut posterior caeca. Lipid analogue amphiphilic molecules containing polymerizable units were investigated in monolayers at the air/water interface by using film balance measurements, fluorescence microscopy, and photobleaching techniques. The polymerizable groups (diene-, diyne-, and methacrylate units) were introduced into the hydrophobic alkyl chains or into the polar head of the amphiphilic molecules. Calculation of the first-orders-wave optical potential in pionic atoms

A microscopic calculation of the first-order s-wave optical potential in pionic atoms which allows the inclusion of the off-shell dependence in momentum of the s-wave \ensuremath{\pi}N amplitude is carried out. Binding effects are also properly taken into account. The results obtained, together with those of the second-order optical potential, are in disagreement with phenomenological optical potentials. The results of the paper suggest the need of new and precise experiments on \ensuremath{\pi}N scattering at low energies and other experiments which can provide precise values of the \ensuremath{\pi}N scattering lengths.

Serum levels of type III procollagen peptide in diabetes mellitus.

Serum levels of type III procollagen peptide (P-III-P) were investigated in 19 patients with type 1 (insulin-dependent) and in 48 (25 orally treated, 23 insulinized) patients with type 2 (non insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. Among patients with type 2 diabetes, 16 orally treated and 14 insulin-treated subjects had macrovascular complications. P-III-P levels were not correlated with the duration of diabetes and with glucose control, nor were there any significant sex and age differences in the levels. Incorporating final state correlation effects, we have reinvestigated the ..gamma.. /sup 1/H..-->..K/sup +/..lambda.. elementary process. Our model not only resolves the persisting trouble of the small KN..lambda.. coupling constant, but also yields agreement with cross section data at higher energies. Using our amplitudes, we calculate angular distributions for the reaction /sup 16/O(..gamma..,K/sup +/)/sub ..lambda..//sup 16/N . While the forward cross section increases with increasing energy, the total cross section is almost constant from E/sub ..gamma../ = 1.2 GeV through 2 GeV, suggesting that rather low photon energies hold promise for exploration of hypernuclear excitations.

The human T-cell leukemia virus type I is associated with adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma in humans, a disease which is induced by a malignant transformation of T lymphocytes. Retrovirus vectors carrying human T-cell leukemia virus type I-derived sequences in reversed transcriptional orientation were used to express antisense RNA transcripts in primary human leukocytes. Human T-cell leukemia virus type I replication and virus-mediated immortalization were inhibited in cells harboring antisense constructs. This study suggests that retrovirus-mediated antisense RNA inhibition can be used to protect primary human T-lymphocytes from human T-cell leukemia virus type I-mediated cell transformation.

Abstract We have studied the ejection of a copper atom through a planar copper surface as a function of recoil velocity and depth of origin. Results were obtained from six molecular dynamics codes, four binary collision lattice simulation codes, and eight Monte Carlo codes. The dynamics of fungi, yeasts, and lactic acid bacteria during fermentation of four musts were studied. Fungi disappeared quickly in the fermenting must. The lactic acid bacteria population diminished during alcoholic fermentation, then they increased and performed malolactic fermentation. The in vivo effect of yeast-derived recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (rh GM-CSF) was investigated in 30 patients with advanced malignancy in a phase Ib trial. Patients were treated at four different dose levels (120 to 1,000 micrograms/m2/d) by either daily intravenous (IV) bolus injection or 24-hour continuous infusion. A sensitive method for the determination of retinyl esters, including their geometric isomers, by isocratic adsorption HPLC is described. The development of a special recycling system allows the separation of all-trans-, 13-cis, 11-cis- and 9-cis-retinyl palmitate, -stearate, -oleate, -palmitoleate and -linoleate with short retention times and high sensitivity. In addition to the well-known synaptic ribbons sensu stricto which consist of a platelike electron-dense central structure surrounded by electron-lucent synaptic vesicles, there are what is termed synaptic spheres, in which the core is not platelike, but round to oval. The thin-layer chromatography of chlorinated anisoles (methoxybenzenes) and veratroles (1,2-dimethoxybenzenes) has been examined on silica gel G60 and RP-18 thin-layer plates. More than fifty solvent systems were screened and some of them recommended for particular separations. Cell wall mannoproteins from Saccharomyces cerevisiae are completely or partially incorporated into their final location when N-glycosylation is inhibited by tunicamycin. These include a 90–100 kDa species still containing O-linked oligomannose chains, derived from a N-glycosylated material larger than 120 kDa; and a 30.5 kDa peptide lacking mannose residues, derived from a 33 kDa species. For both species, the growth temperature influences the level of incorporation of the non N-glycosylated molecules. Secretion of the peptides lacking N-linked saccharide chains follows the route defined by sec mutants.
Sonography versus peritoneal lavage in blunt abdominal trauma.

The reliability of sonography and peritoneal lavage in assessing the need for immediate surgical intervention in blunt abdominal trauma was examined in a prospective study (n = 71). Statistical analysis revealed a sensitivity of 100% for peritoneal lavage compared to 84% for sonography; the accuracy was 99% versus 86%, the predictive value 97% vs. 89%. The statistical difference was significant (p less than 0.05). The results demonstrate that sonography cannot replace peritoneal lavage in the diagnosis of blunt abdominal trauma. Absorption spectra recorded on the high-resolution Fourier transform spectrometer at Kitt Peak National Observatory/National Solar Observatory were used to measure individual line strengths of the nu(2) and nu(4) bands of (C-12)H4 and (C-13)H4. The measurements were used to obtain expressions that could be used to correctly predict individual line strengths through five orders of magnitude of absorption strength and high values of J-prime. Transition strengths were modeled using the dyad formalism of two interacting bands and a seven-term second-order dipole-moment expansion.
