Many Body Modes of Excitation in Heavy Ion Collisions

1989

The one step excitation of two particle holes in heavy ion collisions is shown to be an important channel in the reaction. Pion production has to compete against this new channel, not present in the NN free reaction, and is reduced sensibly. The effective NN cross section is increased leading to a more effective stopping of the nucleons.

Mechanical properties of blends of low density polyethylene with isotactic polypropylene II. effect of mixing temperature and rate

1989

Abstract The effects of mixing temperature and rate on tensile properties of some blends of low density polyethylene with isotactic polypropylene have been studied. Results, with those presented previously on the effect of mixing time, indicate significant effects of mixing parameters and suggest the need to find an “optimum mixing procedure” for each kind of blend.

Hydrocarbon chemotypes of some blackcurrant cultivars (Ribes sp)

1989

The hydrocarbon fractions of the essential oils of 11 cultivars of blackcurrant (Ribes spp) buds originating from collections in France and Australia have been submitted to GC/MS analysis. The major monoterpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons define chemotypes which have been conventionally described by a letter-based formula. Whereas four monoterpene chemotypes previously reported are confirmed, eight sesquiterpene chemotypes have to be redefined. They involve: δ-elemene, β-caryophyllene, γ-elemene, α-humuiene, alloaromadrene, germacrene D, γ-cadinene, and two unknowns. The different cultivars examined and their corresponding chemotypic formulae have been discriminated by principal componen…

THE INFLUENCE OF TOOL STIFFNESS OF THE LIFETIME OF THE INSERTS IN INTERRUPTED CUTTING OPERATIONS

1989

ABSTRACT In the present paper the influence exerted by the stiffness of the tool-workpiece system under working conditions on tool life up to the fracture of carbide inserts in interrupted cutting is investigated. It is shown how, with the increase in compliance of the system, there is a corresponding increase in the average tool life of the insert which is greater the lesser the cutting speed. The results of tests carried out indicate as a possible cause the amount of damage evident in the successive phase of tool engagement with the workpiece. It was observed how, in this phase, the tool, vibrating at the same rate as the toolholder produces alternations in the cutting force. This effect …

Nitrosoureas Modes of Action and Perspectives in the Use of Hormone Receptor Affine Carrier Molecules

1989

Mechanisms of DNA adduct formation by antineoplastic 2-chloroethyl-N-nitrosoureas (CNUs) and of DNA damage induced by these compounds are discussed. CNUs are alkylating agents that form DNA-DNA cross-links as well as 2-chloroethylated and 2-hydroxyethylated adducts, the N-7-position of guanine being the predominantly alkylated site. A close correlation exists between the potential of a given compound to induce DNA-DNA cross-links and its antineoplastic effectiveness. However, levels of DNA-DNA cross-linking in bone marrow and extent of myelosuppression as measured in rodents are also closely correlated. The design of new cross-linking analogues capable of directing the antineoplastically re…

Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (CSF) and multilineage CSF recruit human monocytes to express granulocyte CSF

1989

Abstract We assessed the capacity of recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and multilineage (Multi)-CSF to induce release of granulocyte-CSF (G-CSF) by highly purified peripheral blood monocyte (Mo) preparations. Our results reveal that GM-CSF and Multi-CSF, either alone or in a synergistic concert, activate Mo to transcribe G-CSF messenger (m) RNA and release biologically active G- CSF protein into their culture supernatants. G-CSF had no regulatory effect on Mo expression of cytoplasmic G-CSF mRNA levels and G-CSF protein secretion by itself. These differential actions of CSFs provide further insight into self-regulatory mechanisms within the growth f…

Representations of Affine Kac-Moody Algebras

1989

In the first chapter we explained how simple finite-dimensional Lie algebras can be completely characterized in terms of their Cartan matrices or Dynkin diagrams. The same holds for an arbitrary semisim-ple finite-dimensional Lie algebra. A semisimple Lie algebra is a direct sum of simple ideals which are pairwise orthogonal with respect to the Killing form. It follows that the Cartan matrix of a semisimple Lie algebra decomposes to a block diagonal form, each block representing a simple ideal. Similarly, the Dynkin diagram is a disconnected union of Dynkin diagrams of simple Lie algebras. Next we shall study certain infinite-dimensional Lie algebras which have many similarities with the si…

Giant-cell tumor of bone, stage II, displaying translocation t(12;19)(q13;q13).

1989

A new case of giant-cell tumour (GCT) of bone with benign histological features, clinical stage II, has been reviewed with immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. After short-term tissue culture the karyotype, using G-banding techniques, presented a consistent translocation t(12;19)(q13;q13). Nude mice xenografts of the tumour were unsuccessful after 6 months of follow-up. Presence of such chromosomal rearrangement may be related to locally aggressive, histologically benign giant-cell tumors of bone.

1989

The cribrimorph Distansescharella seguenzai Cipolla,,1921, described from the Pliocene of Sicily has been rediscovered in fossil deposits (Messinian of Western Algeria, and Lower Pliocene of Calabria, Southern Italy) and in Recent Mediterranean material (Straits of Gibraltar, Alboran Sea, Gulf of Tripoli). Its morphology is demonstrated by SEM study of living specimens. In spite of some differences with the type-species of Distansescharella D'Orbigny revealed by examination of its neotype, the generic status of D. seguenzai is confirmed. An ecological analysis of the Recent and fossil assemblages including D. seguenzai is made by considering the zoarial growth forms and the potential habita…

Optimal Shape Design in Contact Problems

1989

From the mathematical point of view, optimal shape design (or optimum design, optimization of the domain, structural optimization) is a branch of the calculus of variations and especially of optimal control where study is devoted to the problem of finding the optimal shape for an object. In an optimal shape design process the objective is to optimize certain criteria involving the solution of a partial differential equation with respect to its domain of definition, [2, 3, 5].

Molecular study on nosocomial Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains.

1989

Nosocomial Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates were typed by DNA fingerprinting techniques. Chromosomal DNA banding patterns, after endonuclease digestion, of six isolates from a neonatal care unit confirmed the results of O-serotyping and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern analysis. In contrast, the characterization by chromosomal DNA fingerprinting of P. aeruginosa strains isolated from patients treated in a burn unit disagreed with the two classic typing methods: in fact, isolates that varied in serotype and antibiograms showed identical restriction endonuclease profiles, whereas two indistinguishable isolates cultured from individual patients were easily and reproducibly differentiated by…

Examination of the least-squares method applied to the evaluation of physicochemical parameters with linearized equations

1989

Physicochemical parameters are frequently evaluated by the least-squares method after linearization of the equation which relates the experimental variables to the parameters of interest. When a given set of data is treated to evaluate (n+1) parameters. (n+2) nominally identical linearized equations are possible; each of these leads to different sets of values of the parameters which are also affected by different variances. These differences are also observed when statistical weights are used. Two methods for establishing which one of the (n+2) equations is best for fitting the data, i.e., simulation of experiments and propagation of errors, are discussed, compared and applied to a potenti…

Amylase production in submerged culture using principal component analysis

1989

Abstract The aim of our work was to study the production of α-amylase and glucoamylase in submerged culture by a species of Aspergillus niger screened for its high amylase activity. Statistical analysis was not used to optimize fermentation conditions but it was employed in a new approach to describe the culture behaviour. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to describe the influence of three agitation speeds on the rate of amylases synthesis and on the evolution of other indirect growth factors. The results of this analysis showed that the oxygen transfer at various agitation speeds affected the levels of enzymes, their production rates and the CO 2 production rate (indirect mea…

The Virasoro Algebra

1989

In this chapter we shall study the Lie algebra Vect S1 of vector fields on a circle and some of its generalizations. The Lie algebra Vect S1 has a central extension, the Virasoro algebra. The representation theory of the Virasoro algebra is closely related to the representation theory of affine Lie algebras. In fact, through the Sugawara construction, to be defined below, a highest weight representation of an affine Lie algebra carries always a highest weight representation of the Virasoro algebra. All the irreducible highest weight representations of the Virasoro algebra are known and they can be exponentiated to representations of associated infinite-dimensional Lie groups. The representa…

COMPARISON OF EXPERIMENTS WITH WEIGHTED DISTRIBUTIONS

1989

In this paper the standard statistical experiment in which a random sample is drawn from some distribution involving an unknown parameter θ is compared with experiments in which samples are obtained from different weighted versions of that distribution, so that the underlying probability of entering the sample is multiplied by some weight function. This comparison is carried out by means of the concepts of sufficiency and pairwise sufficiency as developed in Blackwell's theory of the comparison of statistical experiments. Many examples are presented which illustrate the wide variety of effects that weight functions can have on the information about θ.

Evidence for Several Hepatic Proteins Related to Microsomal Epoxide Hydrolase

1989

Epoxide hydrolases catalyze the conversion of epoxides, some of which have been shown to be carcinogenic, to dihydrodiols (Guenthner and Oesch 1981). At least three forms of epoxide hydrolases exist in rats, two of which, namely mEHb and mEHch, are associated mainly with the microsomal fraction (Oesch et al 1984; Levin et al 1983) whereas one form namely cEH is found to a large extent in the cytosolic fraction (Gill and Hammock 1981). These three forms differ in their immunological and catalytic properties quite considerably (Guenthner et al 1981). In the case of mEHb the existence of several closely related isoenzymes with an identical apparent subunit molecular weight (Mrs) of 50,000 was …

String fields as limit of functions and surface terms in string field theory

1989

We consider the String Field Theory proposed by Witten in the discretized approach, where the string is considered as the limit N → ∞ of a collection of N points. In this picture the string functional is the limit of a succession of functions of an increasing number of variables; an object with some resemblances to distributions. Attention is drawn to the fact that the convergence is not of the uniform kind, and that therefore exchanges of limits, sums and integral signs can cause problems, and be ill defined. In this context we discuss some surface terms found by Woodard, which arise in integrations by parts, and argue that they depend crucially on the choice of the successions of functio…
