A representation scheme of knowledge at both the geometric and conceptual levels is offered which extends a generative theory of visual perception. According to this theory, the perception process proceeds through different scene representations at various levels of abstraction. The geometric domain is modeled following the CSG (constructive solid geometry) approach, taking advantage of the geometric modelling scheme proposed by A. Pentland, based on superquadrics as representation primitives. Abstract The different structure of the costs of ground and surface water and the different and complementary characteristics of both kinds of resources make it possible to solve the specific needs of water quantity and quality more adequately and economically if both resources are used conjunctively. Higher discount rates favour the inclusion of elements involving lower initial investment and generally with higher groundwater components. Unmasking frequency-dependent selection in tri-cultures of Drosophila melanogaster.

Larval-to-adult viability was measured for three strains of Drosophila melanogaster: a wild strain and two eye colour mutant strains (cardinal and sepia) starting from seventy different genotypic compositions. Analyses of a sub-set of the data (not considering all genotypic frequencies) demonstrate frequency-dependence in the three strains. These results suggest that in this experiment, frequency-dependent selection may be masked by other selective forces, only being apparent when specific analyses are carried out.

Abstract The retention (I), dispersion (IM) and selectivity (I*) indices of sixteen polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and fourteen polychlorinated dibenzofurans were determined on a low-polarity HP-5 capillary column using a gas chromatograph connected with an ion-selective detector. IM and I* values were also calculated for all 73 dibenzo-p-dioxins from the di- to the octachloro isomer and for all possible 135 chlorinated dibenzofurans based on the predicted retention index data reported earlier. The effect of the position of chlorination is shown and the results are compared with those for several series of chlorinated aromatics.

Are ratings of psychomotor retardation correlated with neuropsychological measurements?

The present study investigated the correlation between retardation, assessed by the Bech-Rafaelsen Melancholia Scale (BRMS), and measurements of reaction time and motor performance in 26 elderly depressed patients. Significant correlations were only detected between motor retardation and the number and duration of faults in the line following part of the motor performance test. The total scores of the BRMS and the Hamilton Depression Scale did not correlate significantly with any of the performed measurements.

Abstract The linear solvent strength model of Snyder was applied to describe fast protein separations on 2.1-μm non-porous, silica-based strong anion exchangers. It was demonstrated on short columns packed with these anion exchangers that (i) a substantially higher resolution of proteins and nucleotides was obtained at gradient times of less than 5 min than on porous anion exchangers; (ii) the low external surface area of the non-porous anion exchanger is not a critical parameter in analytical separations and (iii) μg-amounts of enzymes of high purity and full biological activity were isolated.

This work is aimed at further elucidating the aggregation behaviour of micron- and submicron-size non-porous silicas and the column performance of 1–2-μm C18 silicas in reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography of low-molecular weight compounds. The therapeutic efficacy of 5-fluorouracil (FUra) and cis-dichlorodiamine-platinum (cis-DDP) in mice bearing transplantable leukemia and solid tumors was evaluated using different sequences of combination of these agents. The optimal sequence was cis-DDP administered 24 h after FUra. The reaction of trialkylphosphites or related P-nucleophiles with benzothiete (1) leads to zwitter ionic species, which show an Arbuzov - like rearrangement to the products 4 and 7, respectively. New heterocyclic ring systems are generated in the case of cyclic esters. The normal SN2 reaction leads to the 1:2 adducts 9, whereas in an SN1 process the 1:1 adduct 13 is formed.

Laser spectroscopy has been crucial for the measurement of isotope shifts, which reflect the variations of nuclear charge radii and shapes. Control of catalytic properties of ZSM-5 made by fast and template- free synthesis.

Abstract The fast template-free synthesis of ZSM-5 was accomplished in both static and stirred autoclaves employing sodiumwaterglass.silica hydrogel and pyrogenic silicas as silica sources. Highly pure crystalline ZSM-5 was obtained in the sodiumwaterglass reaction system in the stirred autoclaves without seeds within 3 hours. Addition of 2% (w/w) of seeds reduced the reaction time to 2 hours. The catalytic activity and shape selectivity of the H-ZSM-5, tested by the disproportionation of ethylbenzene, was found to be largely controlled by the synthesis parameters and by the posttreatments.
