Osteoporosis is an important pathologic state dueto the large number of peo ple who suffer from it ali o ver the wold It is linked to the increase of the survival rate and cause serious socioeconomic problems. It is of great value to know its risk factors so that, avoiding them maximun it mays minimize the loss of osseus tissue and its complications. Sixty patients were studied, forty of them affected of clinical osteoporosis, realizing the marrow relation between the illness and the risk factors such as sex menopause, sun exposure, diet and physical activity.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy has been in clinical use since 1980 with several hundred thousand patients treated to date. Striking complications, like perirenal hematomas, are rare with a range of approximately 0.5%–1.5%. High dose applications in pigs and dogs have shown devastating effects on renal parenchyma with intrarenal hemorrhage and later fibrosis (Muschter et al. 1987). However, very little is known about shock wave effects on single cells like cellular blood components. Effects of the Phosphodiesterase Inhibitor Enoximone on the Autonomic Innervation of the Isolated Heart

Enoximone is a selective inhibitor of a low Km, cyclic AMP-specific type of phosphodiesterase (PDE III). In guinea pig and chicken atria, enoximone (0.1-100 mumol/L) caused a weak increase in the force of contraction. The heart rate was slightly enhanced or was unchanged (chicken). Enoximone (30 mumol/L) also failed to shift the concentration-response curves for the positive inotropic and chronotropic effects of norepinephrine in guinea pig atria. Under almost the same conditions, enoximone and the nonselective PDE inhibitor 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) markedly potentiated the forskolin-induced mobilization of choline from phospholipids. Classification of Brain Tumors

In 1914, L. Bruns stated in Krause’s General Surgery of Brain Disorders that brain tumors include all neoplasias growing within the cranium and that they comprise three groups: (1) true tumors, (2) infectious granulomas, and (3) parasites. Current usage is more precise and is limited to the first of Bruns’ categories. Even so, brain tumors constitute a large and very heterogeneous group. A taxonomic approach to classification is necessary if we are to make sense of an initially disorganized set of observations, compare the findings of different observers, and attempt a prognostic evaluation.

Measuring the Chiralities of Weak b → c(u) Transitions in Exclusive B Meson Decays

I discuss possibilities to measure the chirality of the weak b → c(u) transitions in exclusive bottom meson decays in (i) the exclusive semileptonic decay process B → D* + 1 + ν1 and (ii) in the exclusive nonleptonic decays of bottom mesons to baryon-antibaryon pairs.

Signatures of spontaneously broken r parity and solar neutrino oscillations

Matter-enhanced neutrino-oscillation parameters can be probed in a variety of conventional experiments in supergravity models where the small neutrino mass arises from spontaneous R-parity violation. A combined analysis of astrophysical and laboratory limits tends to exclude regions of oscillation parameters where the high-energy neutrinos are adiabatically converted. This suggests the possibility of a large reduction in the pp and Be7 neutrino flux even for a mildly reduced B8 neutrino flux, thus stressing the importance of gallium experiments.

La inundación de la Ribera del Xúquer en noviembre de 1987

Entre el 3 y el 5 de noviembre de 1987 se produjeron inundaciones importantes que afectaron al S del País Valenciano y a Murcia. En este trabajo se analiza la zona afectada en las dos Riberas del Xúquer a partir de los datos recogidos en los Ayuntamientos y las Cámaras Agrarias. La zona inundada por el agua en esta ocasión fue muy parecida a la de 1971, aunque fue menor que en 1982. Sin embargo, la dinámica de la inundación fue prácticamente la misma en los tres casos, dado que ésta viene condicionada fundamentalmente por la topografía de la llanura de inundación.

Zahlen uber die Vitaminversorgung der Bevolkerung, die aus Agraroder Einkaufsstatistiken stammen, sagen wenig uber die Versorgungslage aus, weil sie starke individuelle Unterschiede bei der Vitaminaufnahme nicht berucksichtigen konnen. Untersucht man den tatsachlichen Vitaminstatus der Bevolkerung in reprasentativen Stichproben, so finden sich Bevolkerungsgruppen, die deutlich aus der Norm herausfallen und eine unzureichende Vitaminversorgung aufweisen. Die Erkennung ist nicht einfach, weil es sich um marginale oder subklinische Mangelerscheinungen handelt (s. Seite 7/8), die nur mit subtilen Methoden erfast werden konnen.

In this paper a very simple model for predicting the daily diffuse solar radiation at any Italian location using as input few extensively measured meteorological parameters is proposed. The effect of temperature and salinity on resting egg size of two Brachionus plicatilis (Rotifera) clones was investigated. Clones were selected according to their different behaviour in laying resting eggs: one clone ejects them, whereas they remain inside the females body in the other clone. The difference in resting eggs size between the two clones is noticeable, although the difference is not as great as that between female body size. Summary A numerical method for analysing the filling of axisymmetrical dies of complex shape is proposed. The method, which is a further development of a LP finite element model, is able to take into account the contact conditions directly in the mathematical formulation of the problem. In such a way the solution of the die filling process is obtained by solving a LP problem, avoiding problems of numerical convergence and the heavier calculations requested by other iterative methods.
