Lesion of areas 17/18/19: effects on the cat's performance in a binary detection task

The ability of two cats to discriminate between two geometrical outline patterns in the presence of superimposed Gaussian visual noise — i.e. in a binary detection task — was tested before and after bilateral removal of cortical areas 17, 18 and 19. The detection probability PD was measured as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio. After a lesion of areas 17, 18 and 19 both cats were unable to carry out the discrimination tasks. Their detection performance dropped to chance level, but after an extensive phase of retraining (3 months) they regained the ability to discriminate visual patterns. The authors present 27 fractures of distal third of tibia treated by Ender and intramedullary, without reaming nailing and PTB, describing the surgical procedure. Clinical results obtained are excellent, as far as pain and mobility are concerned, with a 58'62% of anatomic radiologic axis, finding as the most frequent disturbances the varusm movement and shortening, being all of them minimal. The small rate of complication (6'89%) and sequels are to be taken as the most important results. IBMF and IBFFM Approach to Nuclei in the A≃100 Region

An overview of the calculations in IBFM and IBFFM for nuclei in the A ≃ 100 region is presented. The application to these nuclei with a complex structure including the rapid transition from spherical to deformed nuclear shapes provides a stringent test for the capacities of this theoretical approach. From the result of the studies of the heavy Yttrium isotopes and the N=59 isotones it is concluded that it can account for the basic structure and the phase transition in these nuclei.

Long-Term Potentiation in Slices from Human Hippocampus

Long-term potentiation (LTP) has been observed in slices from human hippocampi removed for intractable epilepsy using extra- and intracellular recording in vitro. Furthermore the effects of several neuroactive substances with possible relevance for synaptic plasticity was investigated. Human hippocampal neurones in vitro display properties very similar to the respective rodent cells.

Correlation of carnassial tooth size and body weight in recent carnivores (mammalia)

The correlation between the lower carnassial crown area and the body weight is examined for modern carnivores. It is very high, but the ursids and felids show a relationship different from the other carnivore families. Some exceptions are discussed. 195 patients with trochanteric fractures of femur treated with rigid intramedulary nailing are colected. They have studied the stability of the fractures, have taken as parameters the fracture's stability, femoral angle of inclination after the surgery and consolidation, reduction of the middle cortical of the fracture after surgery, consolidation and migration of the nail. The authors concluded that the technique provide a relative stability, the reduction during the surgery is the factor than determine the fracture's evolution. The best femoral angle of inclination is valgus and diastasis of the middle cortical of the fracture.

Numerical Modelling of the Urban Climate

Three-dimensional numerical models of the urban climate have been developed in order to simulate climatic changes and air pollution in urban regions due to anthropogenic activities. Two versions are presented. Model A covers mesoscale γ and uses the roughness length to characterize surface structure. The microscale version B approximates the actual urban build-up by rectangular blocks. Model A results agree reasonably well with observations. For complex building structures, the microscale model must be applied. Model B results on neutral flow and pollutant transport within a particular building configuration are discussed.

Disaccharide fragments resulting from the enzymatic digestion of heparins with heparinase have been purified by gel filtration chromatography and directly analyzed by positive and negative ion liquid secondary ion mass spectrometry (LSIMS). Following the chromatographic purification from excess sodium salt, the mass spectra of di- and tetrasaccharide fragment mixtures enabled the identification of up to three covalently bound sulfate moieties per glycosaminoglycan-disaccharide unit, by means of their molecular ions, containing the corresponding alkali-counterions.

The solubility limits of some pesticides (Linuron, Methoxychlor, Diclofopmethyl, Diclofop and 2,4-D) and of 3,4-dichloroaniline have been determined in supercritical CO2 at 200 bar and 40° C, using the Milton Roy sample preparation accessory SPATM. Depending on the polarity and vapour pressure of the investigated compounds, the solubility was found to be between 0.3 and 12 gl−1.

The hydrogen bonded cation [DMSOHDMSO]+ has a very short OHO bond distance (2.405 A) which compares well with that in the known rhodium analogue. The two DMSO ligands are trans on iridium and coordinate via the sulphur atoms. Earlier work had assigned the cis structure to the anion in this compound.

Starch content in adult orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) leaves was highest at the end of the winter rest period and decreased during flowering and fruit set. Young inflorescence leaves accumulated starch until the June drop period to decrease to a low value at the end of it. Both, α- and ß-amylase activities were found in the leaves and the enzymes separated through Sephadex G100 filtration. By electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gels with 0.25 % amylopectine, α-amylase was resolved in 5 bands, and ß-amylase in 7.
