Cholinergic-Adrenergic Presynaptic Interactions on the Heart in the Millisecond Range as Studied With the Pulse-to-Pulse Method

A method has been devised to study the interactions of cholinergic and adrenergic nerves in the rabbit atria, a tissue known to be densely innervated by both vagus and sympathetic nerve fibres. The atria were isolated and perfused via the ascending branches of the coronary arteries. The acetylcholine (ACh) stores were labelled with [14C]-choline and the noradrenaline (NA) stores with [3H]-NA. The radioactive compounds were separated on columns and determined by scintillation spectrometry.

A dot-immunobinding assay for the detection of antiglomerular basement membrane antibodies has been developed. The globular domain NC1 of basement membrane collagen type IV was used as antigen. The assay proved to be specific, sensitive, and reproducible. Circulating antibodies in each of 12 sera from patients with florid Goodpasture's syndrome could be demonstrated, whereas sera from patients with Goodpasture's syndrome in clinical remission and various control sera showed no reactivity. Barley aleurone protoplasts, when exposed to Ga3 and Ca2+ synthesize and secrete the hydrolytic enzyme α -amylase (Bush et al., 1986). At the same time, protoplasts undergo important structural changes which reflect the elaboration of the membrane system involved in protein synthesis and secretion. The mobilization of lipid reserves may be a preliminar step which would provide energy as well as several components for the synthesis of membrane lipids.

Klinische Beobachtungen haben gezeigt, das Zigarettenrauchen eine wichtige pathogenetische Rolle bei der erektilen Dysfunktion spielt. In unserer Impotenz-Sprechstunde fiel uns auf, das einige unserer Patienten mit geringgradiger arterieller Insuffizienz nach Zigarettengenus eine verminderte pharmako-induzierte Erektion erzielten. Einige dieser Patienten wurden nach Einstellung des Zigarettenkonsums wieder potent, ohne das zusatzliche Papaverin-Phentolamin-Injektionen notwendig gewesen waren. Aus diesen Beobachtungen heraus entwikkelten wir eine tierexperimentelle Studie, um den Einflus des Zigarettenrauchens auf die penile Erektion zu untersuchen.

The application of lasers in fundamental nuclear research has been devoted predominantly to the investigation of nuclear structure of unstable isotopes through the measurement of isotope shift and hyperfine splitting of the atomic spectrum of the nuclei in question. It is shown that the spin-orbit current which leads to an improved description ofd(γ,p)n below π-threshold is essentially a two-body exchange effect. This is demonstrated by separation of its one-body contribution. Furthermore, above π-threshold its inclusion leads to an improved agreement with experiment, in particular for the differential cross section in the Δ-excitation region.

Several components of the photosynthetic electron transport chain (P-700, cytochrome f, QB-protein) as well as the rate of electron transport and the chlorophyll content of the needles of spruce trees with different degrees of damage were investigated. A comparative study is made of the histopathology, radiology and fluorescence of tetracyclin uptake in 15 cases of idiopathic necrosis of the femoral head (Ficat and Arlet Degrees III and IV) treated with substitution arthroplasty. Zur Diagnostik von Gallenblasen- und Lebererkrankungen stehen nichtinvasive Methoden (Sonographie und Computertomographie) im Vordergrund. Der Nachweis einer Cholezystolithiasis ist sonographisch in uber 90% moglich und als Operationsindikation ausreichend. Die Choledocholithiasis ist praoperativ sonographisch nicht zuverlassig nachweisbar. Auch eine praoperativ durchgefuhrte ERCP rechtfertigt nicht den Verzicht auf die intraoperative Darstellung der Gallenwege. Bei der Diagnostik von Lebertumoren bleibt der Nachweis von Metastasen problematisch. Eine Verbesserung ist von der Weiterentwicklung der Computertomographie und der Szintigraphie zu erwarten.

The reaction-time to a series of successive digits was measured on two subjects. After practice, it was found that whilst the reaction time to the onset of the series was constant at 150 ms, the response time to additional digits became less and less to asymptote to a level of about 50 ms. The time course of this ‘chorus-line’ phenomenon was studied in greater temporal detail by varying the interval in steps of 20 ms. The effect was greatest at 200 ms. Thereafter, it declined and for long intervals reached the value of a standard reaction time. Twelve subjects with stable asthma each inhaled two puffs (200 micrograms) of salbutamol on 2 separate days 3 h after double-blind oral administration of ketotifen (two 1-mg capsules) or identical placebo. FEV1 was recorded before and at intervals for 4 h after inhalation of salbutamol. Overall, the FEV1 was significantly greater during the 4-hour period after premedication with ketotifen (p less than 0.02) and the difference between the effect of placebo and ketotifen was statistically significant at 120, 180 and 240 min after salbutamol (p less than 0.05).
