Improvement in both in-vitro fertilization/embryo transfer (IVF/ET) and gamete intra-Fallopian transfer (GIFT) procedures have led to a progressive extension of their use far beyond the indications represented by tubal problems. One of the most important examples of this is in the field of male infertility. Some researchers claim that IVF/ET is more efficient on the basis of the 'fertilization evidence', while others prefer the GIFT technique, stressing that as its results are clearly so much better that it should be used in all cases.

Aging of materials is an important factor in the long term behaviour of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement. A new method for evaluating the aging of this material by diferential scanning calorimetry is presented as well as results of measures made on an animal model and using material removed from falled artbroplasties. PMMA aging is nearly inexistent in tbe first weeks and little after sorne years.

This statiscal study evaluated the relationship between simple lumbar reontgenogram and the existence of herniated lumbar discs at certain levels. 120 patients with herniated discs surgically verified were studied, taking four parametres from their x-ray films. Conclusions show that sorne characteristics of the lumbar spine as a high illiac crest Iine and a rudimentary rib at T12 level, could become the existence of herniated discs at L4-L5 leve! and to protect L5-S1 level.

Spontaneous renal rupture is an infrequent event and is usually caused by a predisposing factor. Up to 178 cases have been published. We present a case of a large spontaneous perirenal hematoma caused by a perihilar renal cell carcinoma of a 1-cm diameter. Reviewing the literature, a classification of the condition is given according to the underlying pathology and mechanism of rupture. The need for explorative surgery in cases which cannot be clarified by noninvasive diagnostic tools is discussed.

Elongational data on a large number of polyethylene samples with different structures and their blends are presented in order to evaluate the influence of the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution for a given degree of long chain branching. The elongational viscosity rises with the number of branch points and also with molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. Simple relationships between elongational viscosity at a given deformation and molecular parameters are presented.

Cluster calculations for H2dissociation on Cu and Ni

1988

Self-consistent cluster calculations have been carried out for hydrogen dissociation on Cu and Ni clusters using local-density theory and the LCAO-DVM expansion. We find physisorption, chemisorption and dissociation minima in the resulting two-dimensional potential energy surfaces, and for the Ni cluster, also an indication of the associative molecular chemisorption state. For Cu we find a considerable barrier at the seam separating the molecular chemisorption and dissociative minima. The analysis of one-electron levels supports the picture of Harris and Andersson that the s to d conversion present on Ni surfaces does not similarly lower the barrier on Cu surface.

Chronic active hepatitis (CAH) is a clinical syndrome of different etiologies. Liver-kidney microsomal (LKM) autoantibodies characterize a subgroup of HBsAg negative CAH, which is considered to be an autoimmune liver disease. By immunoblotting analysis (IB) LKM positive sera have been shown to react strongly with a poly-peptide band at 50 kD. Therefore we investigated various rat microsomal enzymes with a molecular weight around 50 kD as potential candidate target antigens. The configuration of the bonding environment of tin in the complexes [R2Sn(SCH2CH2SO3)2]2− (R = Me, Ph) and [Me3Sn(SCH2CH2SO3)]− has been determined to be tetrahedral both in the solid state and in aqueous solution (for the methyl derivatives). The coordination number of tin increases to five in aqueous solutions for the Me2Sn(IV) complexes in Hepes buffer (N-2-hydroxyethylpiperazine-N′-2-ethanesulfonic acid; at least in fivefold excess, at pH 7.4) due to coordination by the tertiary amino nitrogen atom. The effect of energy deprivation on autophagocytosis in Ehrlich ascites tumor cells was studied using cytochemical techniques. Autophagocytosis was induced with vinblastine incubation (0.1 mM) and the cellular ATP-level was lowered with 2-deoxy-D-glucose (0.35 mM).
