High-Resolution Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy of Methane 13CD4 in the Pentad Region

Abstract We present the first Raman spectrum of 13CD4 recorded at room temperature in the pentad region by inverse Raman spectroscopy, thus including the ν1 (A1), 2ν2 (A1), 2ν4 (A1), and ν2 + ν4(F1 + F2) Q branches. It is noteworthy that the overtone bands 2ν2 and 2ν4 are observed for the first time in a methane-like molecule by a coherent Raman process. The wide frequency range investigated, covering 45 cm−1 in three parts, contains more than 300 lines with uncertainty less than 10−3 cm−1 in most cases. Multidisciplinary treatment of primary Ewing's sarcoma of bone.A 6-year experience of a European cooperative trial

The German Society of Pediatric Oncology in 1981 initiated the Cooperative Ewing's Sarcoma Study (CESS 81) using a four-drug combination of chemotherapy prior to definitive local control with surgery and/or radiation. From January 1, 1981 until February 28, 1985, 93 patients were registered at the trial office from 54 participating institutions in West Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. On February 1, 1987, 54 of 93 patients were disease-free. Using the Kaplan-Meier life table analysis, the estimated disease-free survival (DFS) rate was 60% at 36 months and 55% at 69 months. A variational inequality approach to constrained control problems for parabolic equations

A distributed optimal control problem for parabolic systems with constraints in state is considered. The problem is transformed to control problem without constraints but for systems governed by parabolic variational inequalities. The new formulation presented enables the efficient use of a standard gradient method for numerically solving the problem in question. Comparison with a standard penalty method as well as numerical examples are given.

Relationship between Auxin-Dependent Proton Extrusion and Plasmalemma Redox System in Maize Coleoptile Segments

Abraded coleoptile segments reduce ferricyanide utilizing endogenous substrates. The kinetics of ferricyanide reduction shows an initial rapid rate followed by a slow rate of reduction. The duration of the initial phase is about 5 minutes. The slow phase is observed for more than 30 minutes. A Lineweaver-Burk plot of the slow phase was linear and revealed maximum velocity of the reaction of 42 nmols ferricyanide reduced/hour*coleoptile segment and an apparent Km (ferri) of 2.25mM.

Local Shock-Wave Lithotripsy of Distal Ureteral Calculi

Abstract Since the initiation of the clinical trial utilizing a second-generation lithotripor (Lithostar, Siemens, Erlangen, FRG), 96 patients with distal ureteral calculi (i.e. calculi below the pelvic brim) underwent local shock-wave lithotripsy. Routine treatment was conducted under intravenous sedation and light analgesia only. Complete stone disintegration was achieved in 84 patients (87.5%), 11 requiring two sessions and 1 patient, three. In 7 patients ureteroscopy became necessary after unsuccessful local shock-wave treatment. A check-list of the larger fungi of Central Finland

Altogether 1166 taxa are reported from Central Finland. The check-list includes 678 Agaricales, Boletales and Russulales, 266 Aphyllophorales, 10 Tremellales and Dacrymycetales, 19 Gasteromycetes, 138 Ascomycotina and 55 Myxomycota. The locality of each species is presented by indicating the municipality. The main distributional groups and the threatened fungi in Central Finland are discussed. Twenty species belong to different threat categories in Finland. Geastrum triplex and Piptoporus pseudobetulinus are endangered and Haploporus odorus and Polyporus umbellatus vulnerable.

A 72-year-old man had developed amiodarone neuropathy. He was found, at biopsy, to have a fascicular neuroma of his right sural nerve, unassociated with his underlying neuropathy, apparently due to blunt trauma, as electroneurographic needling of this nerve could safely be ruled out by the patient and his physicians. Such fascicular neuromas, which may remain without sensory deficits, may develop at an unknown frequency, and may only be uncovered by biopsy — or autopsy — in a coincidental neuropathic process.

In a short-circuited mucosa-submucosa preparation of the rat descending colon with preserved Meissner's plexus mounted as an everted sac rhein transiently increased the potential difference and short-circuit current (Isc) when administered serosally and mucosally, but serosal application was more effective. Maximal effects were obtained at rhein concentrations of 1.6 X 10(-4) and 3 X 10(-4) mol/l. Net chloride absorption was decreased. Abstract Carnosol (11,12-dihydroxyabieta-8,11,13-trien-20-oic acid 20,7-lactone), and rosmanol (7α, 11, 12-trihydroxy-abieta-8, 11, 13-trien-20 oic acid-20, 6-lactone), two abietane diterpenes previously isolated from Rosmarinus officinalis, have been isolated from leaves of Dorystoechas hastata. Luteolin, luteolin-7-glucoside, 6-methoxyluteolin-7-glucoside, caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid have also obtained from the same source. The co-occurrence of carnosol, rosmanol and 6-methoxyluteolin-7-glucoside support the close relationship of these two genera.

A revision of the fracture classification was carried out. A biomechanical analysis of this osteosynthesis was undertaken at the Politechnic University of Valencia. The HLA frequencies of 50 Sicilian patients affected with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) were examined. The frequency of Cw4 antigen was significantly increased in patients. Summary Absorption, translocation and metabolism of 14C-pyridate were compared in tolerant maize. moderately susceptible Polygonum lapathifolium and susceptible Chenopodium album. Foliar absorption was limited in all species, but comparatively higher penetration levels were observed in younger leaves of dicotyledonous species. The absorbed radioactivity was not very mobile and translocation appeared mainly sym-plastic. Herbicide selectivity could not be explained on the basis of absorption and transport.
