Analysis of 930 patients with focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver (FNH), including 23 seen by the authors, showed the following results: 82.2% of patients were female, 37.8% of these had taken female steroidal hormones. There was no preference for a particular lobe of the liver. 57.7% of FNH were subcapsular, 33.7% were intrahepatic and 8.8% were pedunculated. Average size was 5.9 cm, 80.8% of the patients were asymptomatic. In 93.5% (115 out of 123) a space-occupying lesion in the liver could be demonstrated by sonography. Evidence is given that demonstrates the reliability of the bihyperbolic equation, proposed by Pla-Delfina and Moreno, in fitting the correlation between absorption rate constants (ka) found in the small intestine and in the colon of the living anesthetized rat, and partition constants (1/R.F−1), for a series of phenylalkylamines, a group of compounds which differ largely from others which have been tested. Emphasis is laid on the nonexistence of an optimum of lipophilicity for intestinal absorption/partition correlation: This feature makes inapplicable the probabilistic approaches to the reported data.

Suppressive effects of C3b on monocyte-dependent T cell proliferation.

The effect of C3b treatment of human monocytes on secondary antigen-dependent T cell response was studied. When antigen-specific T cell blasts were cultivated together with C3b-treated monocytes the proliferative response was inhibited in a dose-dependent fashion. This suppressive effect was specific for C3b because heat-inactivated C3b or buffer alone had no influence on T cell proliferation. First absolute mass measurements of short-lived isotopes

Absolute mass measurements of short-lived isotopes have been performed at the on-line mass separator ISOLDE at CERN by determining the cyclotron frequencies of ions confined in a Penning trap. The cyclotron frequencies for77,78,85,86,88Rb and88Sr ions could be determined with a resolving power of 3×105 and an accuracy of better than 10−6, which corresponds to 100 keV for massA=100. The shortest-lived isotope under investigation was77Rb with a half-life of 3.7 min. The resonances obtained for the isobars88Rb and88Sr were clearly resolved.

Cytoskeletal components of lymphoid organs

Using light and electron microscopic immunolocalization with antibodies to cytoskeletal proteins, we have characterized the nonlymphoid cells of various human lymphoid organs (lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen). In all these tissues, the lymphoid follicles contain a three-dimensional meshwork of "dendritic reticulum cells" which are characterized by the presence of desmosomal junctions, as demonstrated by positive punctate staining with antibodies to the desmosome-specific proteins desmoplakin I and desmoglein, and by intermediate-sized filaments (IFs) of the vimentin type only. We prove that any physical (color-singlet) state can be expanded in terms of a basis constructed by direct product from baryonic and/or mesonic states. The proof is based on a group-theoretical representation method due to Hund. The application of the procedure to the color degrees of freedom leads to known results, which we generalize to more complex situations. The joint application of the method to the color and flavor degrees of freedom results in our initial statement. In this way one is able to give physical meaning to a mathematical procedure. HLA antigens in Sicilian patients affected by chronic myelogenous leukaemia.

SUMMARY HLA antigens were investigated in Sicilian patients with chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) and in Sicilian healthy controls. The frequency of the HLA-DRw6 antigen was significantly decreased in the group of patients. These results suggest that DRw6 may be a marker for decreased susceptibility to the etiological or pathogenic mechanism(s) which produce CMLs.

Testing of a kinetics equation of mechanical degradation

A modification of the kinetics equation of mechanical degradation of Harrington and Zimm is proposed to fit experimental data taken on a molten polystyrene. This equation is applied to each molecular weight of the discretized molecular weight distribution curve, and the limiting molecular weight is determined for each molecular weight. With this modification the theoretical curves fit both Mw and Mn curves well.

Cerebral blood flow in autogenic training and hypnosis.

In 12 healthy volunteers with at least an experience of six months in autogenic training (AT), the cerebral blood flow (CBF) was measured at rest, in AT and in hypnosis (H). A phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C of plant stems (EC 3.1.4.10) assayed at pH 6.6 and at 30 degrees C cleaved phosphatidylinositol such that more than 85% of the product was inositol-1-phosphate. Other phospholipids were cleaved 5 to 10% or less under these conditions. The phospholipase had both a soluble and a membrane-associated form.
