A primal-dual algorithm for the fermat-weber problem involving mixed gauges

1987

We give a new algorithm for solving the Fermat-Weber location problem involving mixed gauges. This algorithm, which is derived from the partial inverse method developed by J.E. Spingarn, simultaneously generates two sequences globally converging to a primal and a dual solution respectively. In addition, the updating formulae are very simple; a stopping rule can be defined though the method is not dual feasible and the entire set of optimal locations can be obtained from the dual solution by making use of optimality conditions. When polyhedral gauges are used, we show that the algorithm terminates in a finite number of steps, provided that the set of optimal locations has nonepty interior an…

Molecular relationship among Salmonella dublin isolates identified at the Center for Enterobacteriaceae of Palermo during the years 1971-85.

1987

SUMMARYA molecular epidemiological study was carried out on 60Salmonella dublinisolates identified at the Southern Italy Enterobacteriaceae Center between 1971 and 1985. These included 23 isolates from children with diarrhoea in Palermo obtained during 1984.All isolates from the outbreak of gastroenteritis in children were resistant to chloramphenicol and streptomycin and harboured two plasmids of 50 MDa and 3 MDa molecular weight, whereas the majority of the isolates identified before 1984 were susceptible to these antibiotics and carried only a 50 MDa molecular weight plasmid. FourS. dublinstrains successively identified from cattle (Palermo, Foggia, Portici) and from a child (Palermo) we…

Contribution of polyadenylate sequences to the translational efficiency of globin messenger RNAs

1987

mRNAs from reticulocyte polysomes were fractionated by chromatography on poly(U)-Sepharose and thermal elution. The molar ratio of alpha- to beta-globin mRNA was found to be 2:1 and 1:1 respectively in short- and long-poly(A) size classes. Translational analyses indicated that the globin mRNAs containing long poly(A) tracts (with a mean length of about 70 nucleotides) directed protein synthesis with higher rates than did mRNA containing short poly(A) tracts (15-35 nucleotides). Experiments performed with sub-saturating mRNA concentrations showed that the digestion with RNAase H induced a decrease in the translational capacity of both globin mRNAs and an increase in the alpha- to beta-globin…

Vibrational Spectra of Polyatomic Molecules through an Algebraic Approach

1987

The study of molecular oscillators may be performed with algebraic methods based upon dynamical chains and their realization in terms of boson operators. From the dynamical algebra U(p+1) for p equivalent oscillators, associated with stretching modes, the local, pseudo-normal and normal limits are obtained through appropriate subgroup chains and various realizations of the U(p+1) generators. Similar technics can be applied to bending modes. Application to XY4 molecules will be presented.

Fine analysis of the chromatin structure of the yeast SUC2 gene and of its changes upon derepression. Comparison between the chromosomal and plasmid-…

1987

Micrococcal nuclease digestion has been used to investigate some fine details of the chromatin structure of the yeast SUC2 gene for invertase. Precisely positioned nucleosomes have been found on a 2 kb sequence from the 3' non-coding region, and four nucleosomes also seem to occupy fixed positions on the 5' flank. Eleven nucleosomes lie on the coding region, although their positioning is not as precise as in the flanks. When the gene is derepressed, these latter nucleosomes adopt a more open conformation and so do two of the nucleosomes positioned on the 5' flank. A dramatic change occurs in the 3' flank, whose involvement in the structural transitions of chromatin upon gene activation is p…

Correlations and predictors of menarche age

1987

In a cross-sectional study of 452 girls between 10 and 16 years of age 36 indices of physical and 50 of mental development were tested for their correlation with age at menarche and chronological age, as well as for their predictive power for estimating menarche by multiple regression analysis. Indices of physical maturity and body weight when adjusted for chronological age showed the highest partial correlation coefficients with age at menarche. Among mental characters which show lower intercorrelations with menarche occurred the highest correlation coefficients for a handmotor factor "Spurennachzeichnen" and a factor "Gruppenabhangigkeit" (which indicates a type of social motivation). Ticlopidine in the Treatment of Multiple Atherosclerotic Arteriopathy: a Strain Gauge Plethysmography and Döppler Spectrum Analysis Evaluation

1987

The effect of ticlopidine was compared with flunarizine in patients with iliac–femoral and / or femoral–popliteal arteriosclerotic arteriopathy accompanied by lesions of the cervical arteries of no haemodynamic significance. In the lower limbs, plethysmography (strain gauge measurements) and Döppler ultrasonography integrated by spectral analysis of the cervical arteries showed qualitative and quantitative improvements of the regional haematic flow. Side-effects were negligible which suggests that ticlopidine is useful in the treatment of multiple arteriosclerotic arteriopathy.

Synthesis and expression of MHC class II molecules in the absence of attached invariant chains by recombinant-interferon-gamma-activated bone-marrow-…

1987

Pure populations of in vitro propagated bone marrow-derived macrophages are constitutively Ia negative. Co-culturing of these cells with recombinant interferon-gamma (rIFN-gamma) resulted in the appearance of high amounts of Ia antigens at the cell surface of essentially all cells. The continuous presence of the stimulus was a prerequisite for sustained Ia expression because removal of the stimulus resulted in rapid decline of surface Ia. Two-dimensional (2D) gel analysis (1D isoelectric focusing, 2D sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) of class II molecules synthesized by rIFN-gamma-stimulated bone marrow macrophages (BMM phi) revealed that, in contrast to class II co…

Studies on (echinodermata) coelomocyte lysate I. Hemolytic activity of coelomocyte hemolysins

1987

Abstract The Holothuria polii coelomocyte lysate contains two trypsin-resistant lytic proteins having different chemico-physical properties : a calcium dependent and heat-labile hemolysin that is probably a constitutive component of the coelomic fluid, and another calcium independent and heat-stable one that is released after immunological stimulation; it is therefore not detectable in natural conditions. The sphingomyelin seems to be the membrane receptor with which both hemolysins interact producing lysis.

Hemodynamic effects of experimental testicular torsion.

1987

Experimental testicular torsion must be used for certain studies of clinical relevance, but most experimental models either do not provide hemodynamic alteration comparable to the clinical situation or cannot guarantee reproducibility. Using a rat model arterial perfusion and hemorrhagic infarction were correlated to the degree of both intra- and extravaginal testicular torsion. Arterial inflow was measured sequentially with radiolabelled microspheres, hemorrhagic infarction was judged by the increase of testicular weight. Maximal hemorrhagic infarction and reproducible values were found when the spermatic cord was twisted together with the tunica vaginalis for 360 degrees-540 degrees.

Aids in sicily: Prevalence of antibodies to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in low and high risk groups

1987

A seroepidemiological survey, carried out to evaluate the prevalence of antibodies to HIV in patients with ARC and in healthy individuals at risk for AIDS, showed the infection to be widespread in the groups at risk, namely in drug abusers and hemophiliacs. However, remarkable difference existed between the prevalence of antibodies to HIV in drug abusers of the city of Palermo and those of other Sicilian provinces. Spread of the virus among Sicilian thalassemics, however, was very low and quite similar in all geographic areas. Antibodies were found very rarely (0.06%) in unpaid voluntary blood donors. The spread of the virus is still confined in high risk groups, and the major part of the s…

Morphogenesis in Root Tip Meristem Cultures of Digitalis obscura L.

1987

Summary The morphogenic capacity of Digitalis obscura L. root tip meristems cultured in vitro has been studied, noting hormonal factors inducing differentiation and development of shoots as well as those promoting somatic embryogenesis. Caulogenesis was obtained with different auxin/cytokinin combinations but a high rate of shoot regeneration was induced by 0.1 or 0.5 ppm IAA and 1.0 ppm BA. Different stages of somatic embryo development were observed in media supplemented with auxins or high auxin/cytokinin ratios, although no complete plant regeneration was achieved. This is the first report known of shoot regeneration from root tips of Digitalis obscura L.

Ectopic thymus in the neck; a case report and review of the literature

1987

A soft, poorly defined mass in the right upper neck of a 7-week-old boy was shown on histology to be ectopic thymus. As aberrant thymic tissue often does change into cysts or neoplasms removal is the treatment of choice. Its persistence in the upper neck seems to be very rare. Embryology, incidence, differential diagnosis and treatment are discussed with a review of the literature.

Clinical heterogeneity in infantile galactosialidosis

1987

A new case of infantile galactosialidosis is presented. The condition was diagnosed when the patient was 4 months of age and she died at 20 months. She exhibited some of the symptoms of classical infantile galactosialidosis but no corneal clouding, cherry-red macular spot or limitation of joint mobility. Sonographic examination showed large kidneys and thickened cardiac septa, two symptoms as yet undescribed in this disorder. Urinary oligosaccharide analysis gave grossly pathological results and subsequent fibroblast enzyme analysis showed a deficiency of alpha-neuraminidase and beta-galactosidase. The patient's clinical features are compared with the few cases so far described in the liter…

Theoretical and Spectroscopic Studies On Imino-carbon Palladated Pyridine-2-carbaldimines

1987

Abstract Ab initio LCAO-MO-SCF calculations on the model compounds C 5 H 4 N-2-C(R 1 )=NH [R 1 = H ( 2c ) and R 1 = trans -PdCl(PH 3 ) 2 ( 4c )] indicate that the E - trans conformation is favored over the E - cis one by 16.9 kJ mol −1 for 2c and by 25.0 kJ mol −1 for 4c . One of the factors which stabilizes the E-trans arrangement for 4c is a weak bonding interaction between the palladium center and the pyridine nitrogen. On going from 2c to 4c a slight charge enrichment on the pyridine carbons and a more pronounced one on the nitrogen atoms is computed, whereas the charge density of the imino carbon atom is decreased. In 4c no π contribution to the PdC bond is observed. Protonation of th…

Arithmetic Problems Formulation and Working Memory Load

1987

First, third, and fifth graders (French children in American-numbered grades) were asked to solve arithmetic problems in which an initial state was modified by two successive transformations. Three independent variables were manipulated systematically. First, the unknown state was either the final state (Sl) or the initial state (S2). Second, either the known state (01) or the transformations (02) appeared in the first place in the problem wording. Third, the question was either located at the end (Ql) or at the beginning (42) of the problem text. As anticipated, these modifications strongly affected the performances at every age: S1 appears clearly easier than S2; 0 1 leads to a better per…

1987

The synthesis of the title compound 4, formally a [13] perimeter, and of its acyclic model system, 1,8-distyrylanthracene (6) is described. The crystal structure of 4 reveals the configuration of the double bonds and the conformation of the macrocycle. Related findings come from the 1H-NMR spectroscopic characterization of 4 and 6 in solution. The spin density distribution of the radical anions 4−· and 6−· is interpretet in terms of the singly occupied molecular orbital and of the prevailing geometry. In contrast to 4, compund 6 proves to be an efficient electron acceptor since it can even be reduced to a tetraanion salt. The complete redox sequence is characterized by NMR and ESR spectrosc…

Phenylene motion in polycarbonate and polycarbonate/additive mixtures

Pulsed deuteron NMR line shapes have been analysed to characterize type and time scale of the phenylene group motion in glassy bisphenol-A polycarbonate. The motional mechanism involvesπ-flips about theC1C4 axis augmented by small angle fulctuations about the same axis, reaching a rms amplitude of ±35‡ at 380 K. The distribution of correlation times for theπ-flips is heterogeneous in nature and can be described either by a log-Gaussian or an asymmetric distribution with a more rapid decay at high correlation times comparable to the Williams-Watts distribution. From both distributions essentailly the same mean activation energy of 37 kJ/mol is obtained, whereas the temperature dependent widt…

Evidence for quasi-fission in40Ar+208Pb collisions near the coulomb-barrier

1987

Fission-fragment angular distributions were measured in the reaction of40Ar with208Pb near the fusion barrier. For nearly symmetric mass-/charge splits we find angular distributions symmetric around θ=90 degrees, however, with unusually large anisotropies. These develop gradually into forward-backward asymmetric distributions as one moves away from mass-/charge symmetry. This indicates that non-compound fission (‘quasi-fission’) competes with true fusion-fission. The relative contribution of quasi-fission to the total fission cross section is somewhere between 51 and 85%. In the framework of the extra-push model this is equivalent to an extra-extra push energy for compound-nucleus formation…

ESR spectroscopic analyses of the deep-green solutions of living poly(2-isopropenylnaphthalene) [poly(2-IPN)] in THF at −80°C provided no evidence of the presence of radical anions as long as butyllithium (BuLi) was used as initiator. In contrast to this finding, radicals could indeed be detected if the polymerization was performed with metallic potassium in THF. These radicals were found to be only stable at low temperatures. UV/VIS spectra of solutions of 2-IPN in THF or toluene and of catalytic quantities of BuLi were recorded at temperatures between −45 and +20°C. The Pan-African continental margin in northeastern Africa: evidence from a geochronological study of granulites at Sabaloka, Sudan

1987

Ion microprobe zircon ages, a Nd model age and RbSr whole-rock dates are reported from the high-grade gneiss terrain at Sabaloka on the River Nile north of Khartoum, formally considered to be part of the Archaean/early Proterozoic Nile craton. The granulites, which are of both sedimentary and igneous derivation, occur as remnants in migmatites. Detrital zircon ages range from ≈ 1000 to ≈ 2650 Ma and prove the existence of Archaean to late Proterozoic continental crust in the sedimentary source region. The Nd model age for one sedimentary granulite is between 1.26 (TCHUR) and 1.70 (TDM) Ga and provides a mean crustal residence age for the sedimentary precursor. Igneous zircons in enderbitic …
