The role of histamine in doxorubicin and teniposide-induced cardiotoxicity in dog and mouse.
1987
In previous studies we reported that teniposide (VM26) induced acute cardiac effects in dogs seem to be related to a release of histamine and that a prior treatment with chlorpheniramine, an H, histamine blocker, prevents the onset of this phenomenon. Since histamine and other vasoactive substances also seem to be involved in doxorubicin (DXR)-induced acute cardiac effects, experiments were undertaken in the aim to prevent, as in the case of VM26, the onset of this phenomenon by administering chlorpheniramine. Since DXR-induced chronic cardiomyopathy also seems to be related to the same mechanisms involved in the onset of acute cardiac effects induced by this drug, additional studies were …

Generalized transport coefficients in a gas with large shear rate
1987
We get a solution of the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) model kinetic equation by means of a perturbative expansion of a temperature gradient to study the transport properties in a gas with large shear rate. The irreversible fluxes are evaluated exactly to first order in the expansion for Maxwell molecules. The transport coefficients obtained are highly nonlinear functions of the shear rate. This dependence on shear rate is analysed and compared with previous results for several transport coefficients. Finally, we have found a solution for a simple model of constant collision frequency for which a large shear rate coexists with an arbitrary temperature gradient.
Collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy
1987
The progress in atomic and molecular spectroscopy has gone hand in hand with improvements of the resolution. Before the tunable narrow-band lasers led to the invention of Doppler-free techniques, spectral lines from cooled hollow-cathode discharges(1) had typical widths larger than 300 MHz, and high resolution was achieved only in rf spectroscopy, e.g., within hyperfine structure multiplets, by the classical techniques like atomic beam magnetic resonance,(2) optical pumρing,(3) or double resonance.(4) While the Doppler broadening $$\delta {v_D} = {v_0}{\left( {{{8kT{\rm{ }}\ln {\rm{ 2}}} \over {m{c^2}}}} \right)^{1/2}}$$ (1) is negligible for resonance frequencies v 0 in the rf regime, the …
Multifactorial control of sedimentation patterns in an ocean marginal basin: the Lusitanian Basin (Portugal) during the Kimmeridgian and Tithonian
1987
The Mesozoic Lusitanian Basin developed as a part of the North Atlantic rift system. Tectonic rifting activity was rejuvenated during the Upper Jurassic, leading to intensive differentiation of facies development. Kimmeridgian and Lower Tithonian calcareous and siliciclastic sediments represent basinal and slope, shallow marine, and terrestrial environments. The lithostratigraphic arrangement of facies units is demonstrated. Sediment character, distribution and thicknesses are mainly controlled by synsedimentary faulting, with a partial overprint by uprise of salt diapirs. Eustatic sea level fluctuations, exogenic and biogenic factors resulted in additional control on facies development.

Synaptophysin expressed in the bronchopulmonary tract: neuroendocrine cells, neuroepithelial bodies, and neuroendocrine neoplasms.
1987
Synaptophysin is an integral membrane glycoprotein with an Mr of 38,000 that occurs in the small, clear vesicles present in neuronal cells and tumors as well as in pancreatic islet cells and various neuroendocrine (NE) carcinomas. We found that synaptophysin is also expressed in normal NE cells of the lungs of newborn rabbits and mice as well as of human fetuses. In bronchial ganglion cells and in nerves, synaptophysin is coexpressed with neurofilament proteins (NFPs), whereas in solitary NE cells and in at least some of the neuroepithelial bodies (NEBs) of the bronchial mucosal lining, synaptophysin coexists with cytokeratins. We also studied a series of NE neoplasms of the lung covering t…
A time-course investigation of vitamin A levels and drug metabolizing enzyme activities in rats following a single treatment with prototypic polychlo…
1987
Xenobiotics previously characterized as selective inducers of drug-metabolizing enzymes were chosen to probe possible relationships between enzyme induction and vitamin A metabolism. Liver, kidney and serum retinol and retinyl palmitate levels were investigated in male Sprague--Dawley rats receiving a single i.p. injection of the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 2,2',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl, 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl or 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (300 mumol/kg) or 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis-(4-chlorophenyl)-ethane (DDT) (150 mumol/kg). While 2,2',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl, a weak or non-inducer, and 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexaclorobiphenyl and DDT, phenobarbital-type inducers of cytochrome…
Isotope shift and hyperfine structure of stable platinum isotopes
1987
Isotope shift (IS) and hyperfine structure (hfs) measurements have been performed on seven lines of the platinum I spectrum with interference as well as laser fluorescence spectroscopy. In the latter case a frequency-doubled single-mode cw dye laser was applied. The IS of190Pt with a natural abundance of only 0.01% was determined to beδν 190, 192=−38.65(8) mK in theλ306.47 nm transition. The IS parameters and the effective hfs integrals in the configuration (5d+6s)10 were determined in intermediate coupling by a least squares fit of the IS and hfs data with eigenvectors obtained from the platinum fine structure (fs). The results are compared with theoretical values and yield improvedδ〈r 2〉 …
Evaluation of advanced silica packings for the separation of biopolymers by high-performance liquid chromatography
1987
Following previous studies of the use of non-porous monodisperse 1.5-microns n-octyl- and n-octadecyl-bonded silicas in gradient elution of proteins, this work was aimed at elucidating further the properties of this novel column material for peptide and protein separations in comparison with wide-pore silicas. First, it is demonstrated that with short columns (e.g., 35 X 8 mm I.D.) packed with these non-porous reversed-phase materials, mixtures of small peptides and mixtures of proteins can be very efficiently resolved. When the chain length of the bonded ligand was varied, the retention of a test set of proteins in gradient elution followed the ligand sequence C18 greater than C8 approxima…
A study on oral rehydration therapy of diarrheal disease in Western Sicily
1987
A longitudinal study to ascertain the most common therapeutic approach to diarrheal disease by general practitioners and pediatricians was carried out in Western Sicily. Data obtained showed that of 902 home-managed cases of diarrhea observed by 58 physicians during one year, 65.3% were treated with antibiotics, 8.0% with antimotility agents and 26.7% were not treated with any pharmacological agent (rehydration or diet). Although oral rehydration therapy was widely known by physicians in Western Sicily, only a few of them were willing to use it routinely as the principal and exclusive treatment.

Effects of magnesium chloride on the contractile response of uterus to several agonists in Ca-free solution
1987
Abstract The effects of MgCl2 on the oestrogen-dominated rat uterus have been examined. Tissues were preincubated in a Ca2+- and Mg2+-free medium containing 3 mM EDTA. Most experiments were subsequently performed in a similar medium containing either no EDTA or EDTA (1 mM). When MgCl2 was added cumulatively (1–32 mM) no contractile responses were obtained in Ca,Mg-free medium or in Ca,Mg-free high K+ solution. When 2 mM CaCl2 as added, a sustained contraction was obtained. Subsequent addition of cumulative concentrations of MgCl2 caused concentration-dependent relaxation. Oxytocin, 2 μM, produced a small and sustained contraction in a Ca,Mg-free medium. Addition of MgCl2, 2 mM, increased th…
A reanalysis of spinal motion during vibration
1987
Calibrated film of the motion of the lumbar spine during vibration was reanalysed, making use of a number of computer based techniques to improve accuracy and reduce measurement noise. The results demonstrated resonant behaviour at about 4 Hz and indicated that at vibration levels of the order of 1 m/s2 there exists bending of the order of 1° (peak to peak) between adjacent vertebrae in the lumbar spine. The bending is complex and involves phase differences along the spine and possibly a rocking motion of the pelvis.
Application of liquid-liquid partition chromatography in the simultaneous purification of sex-hormone-binding globulin and corticosteroid-binding glo…
1987
Two human serum proteins, corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) and sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), were purified to homogeneity by the application of a combination of three different modes of chromatography. Human pregnancy serum was fractionated with ammonium sulphate. SHBG (50% pellet) and CBG (80% pellet) were then purified by affinity chromatography on tresyl-activated Sepharose with 15-aminopentadecanoic acid (for SHBG) and 1,12-diaminododecane (for CBG) as spacers and 17 zeta-aminoethyl-5 alpha-androstan-3 beta,17-diol (for SHBG) and 17 alpha-hydroxy-4-androsten-3-one-17 beta-carboxylic acid (for CBG) as specific ligands for these two proteins. The eluate was injected into a Mon…
Long-term follow-up of children with magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound after treatment of brain tumors
1987
This paper compares the results of MRI and US follow-up examinations of 46 children who had undergone surgery for brain tumors. The cases included 42 posterior fossa tumors, 3 supratentorial tumors and 1 upper cervical spinal cord tumor. US examination proved to be less specific and sensitive than MRI. However, when a "bone window" is available, US is, because of the ease of its application, better suited for frequent routine examinations. Long-term follow-up should, therefore, consist of frequent regular US examinations combined with yearly MRI examinations.
Evaluation of advanced silica packings for the separation of biopolymers by high-performance liquid chromatography
1987
Abstract The reversed-phase chromatography of proteins by gradient elution with acidic, low-ionic-strength aqueous—organic eluents is often associated with losses of the biological activity of the protein. In this study, the enzymatic activities of catalase, horseradish peroxidase and pepsin were examined under static and dynamic column conditions on non-porous, monodisperse 1.5-μm reversed-phase silicas with various n -alkyl ligands. Catalase readily lost its enzymatic activity under the influence of the acidic aqueous—organic eluents in the absence of the reversed-phase packing, whereas peroxidase was partially deactivated as a result of combined mobile phase and stationary phase effects …
Sonography and computed tomography in the diagnosis of orbitocranial malformations and tumors
1987
Standardized sonography and CT scanning have distinct advantages and disadvantages in the evaluation of patients with orbital diseases. Echography provides an efficient screening examination in patients presenting with signs and symptoms of orbital pathology. It allows the detection, localization, measurement and in almost 80% differentiation of orbital lesions. High resolution CT scanning gives an excellent topographic display of masses in the orbit. In visualization of intracranial causes of orbital processes and demonstration of changes in the posterior third of the orbit, in the orbital bones and the periorbital sinuses it is superior to ultrasonography.
Nuclear spins, moments and charge radii of108?111Sn
1987
The hyperfine structure splittings (hfs) and isotope shifts (IS) in the atomic transitions 5s2 5p21S0 → 5s2 5p6s1,3P1 have been measured for the radioactive isotopes108−111Sn and all stable ones. The tin isotopes were prepared as fast atomic beams for collinear laser spectroscopy at the GSI online mass separator following a fusion reaction. Nuclear spins, magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole moments and changes in mean square charge radii have been determined. In109Sn the spinI=5/2 was measured for the nuclear ground state (T1/2=18 min) in contradiction to the literature value. The mean square charge radii show a parabolic behaviour with a maximum at N=66. This is interpreted by collective …
Color superposition: a new modality for contrast echocardiography.
1987
To improve the estimation of endocardial borders in echocardiography, a technique has been developed to combine images from contrasted and noncontrasted echocardiograms of the same heart-phase using a color superposition mode. This method allows both experienced as well as less experienced examiners to define the endocardial borders more reproducibly and objectively. This is achieved by displaying tissue structures as gray level images while the ventricular cavity is marked selectively by the color display of the contrast material zone. Results of volume estimations of the left ventricle by different examiners using several imaging modes including color superposition display are presented.

Rainwater composition over a rural area with special emphasis on the size distribution of insoluble particulate matter
1987
The rainwater composition in the vicinity of Mainz, FRG, has been investigated with special emphasis on insoluble constituents. The number size distribution was determined in the range from 0.1 μm up to 100 μm radius. For particles with r>0.5 μm radius the shape of the size distribution of insoluble particles in rain follows the shape of the average urban and rural aerosol. In this particular size range no major size selective removal processes could be seen. For r<0.5 μm the number size distribution tends to flatten compared to the average aerosol. This might be the indication of a size selective removal process (Greenfield Gap).
A class of unitals of order q which can be embedded in two different planes of order q2
1987
By deriving the desarguesian plane of order q2 for every prime power q a unital of order q is constructed which can be embedded in both the Hall plane and the dual of the Hall plane of order q2 which are non-isomorphic projective planes. The representation of translation planes in the fourdimensional projective space of J. Andre and F. Buekenhouts construction of unitals in these planes are used. It is shown that the full automorphism groups of these unitals are just the collineation groups inherited from the classical unitals.
A morphometric study on sural nerves in metachromatic leucodystrophy.
1987
This study reexamines peripheral neuropathy in infantile, juvenile and adult metachromatic leuco-dystrophy. A computer-assisted method was used which gives more detailed information on abnormal fibre structure from scatter diagrams of the g ratio (axon diameter/fibre diameter). The data show marked and statistically significant reductions in sheath thickness, particularly for the thick myelinated fibres, and most severe in the juvenile and adult forms. This is interpreted as evidence of remodelling of virtually the entire fibre population, without a clear-cut selectivity for either thin or thick fibres.

On the correspondence between rotational bands in the mass regionsA ? 100 andA ? 150
1987
A refined technique is presented to project rotational bands observed in the well studiedZ≧60 rare-earth region into the region of stable ground-state deformation atA ∼-100 with corresponding neutron numbers ofN ≧60. With this procedure, estimates of properties of so far unknown nuclei in the A∼-100 region can be obtained. As an illustration, isotopes aroundN=64 are discussed within this projection method and within the frame-work of the recent quartet model.
Molecular parameters involved in bee-plant relationships: a biological and chemical approach
1987
Abstract Honeybee-plant relationships are based on a conditioning process in which olfactory (plant aroma) and gustatory cues (mainly nectars) are closely linked, leading to a selective foraging behaviour. Among crops dependent upon entomophilous cross-pollination, the sunflower has recently undergone extensive expansion due to hybrid variety selection. Sunflower hybrid seed production is strictly dependent upon pollinating insects, mainly the honeybees, but foragers may have preferences among the parental lines, leading to a lack of pollen carriage and consequently to a decrease of hybrid seed yield. In order to define the role of plant chemicals (aromas, nectars) involved in the pollinati…
The lack of the effect of DA-1 and DA-2 dopamine agonists on the isolated guinea-pig atria.
1987
1 The effects of dopamine and both DA-1 and DA-2 dopamine receptor agonists have been studied on the contractile force of electrically driven guinea-pig left atria and frequency of spontaneously beating right atria. 2 Pretreatment of animals with reserpine caused a parallel rightward shift of the concentration-response curve to dopamine of either preparation. 3 Propranolol, but not domperidone, shifted to the right the dose-response curve for the positive inotropic and chronotropic effects of dopamine. 4 Neither apomorphine, fenoldopam, bromocriptine nor piribedil had effects on the frequency and contractile force of the isolated guinea-pig atria. 5 These results suggest that DA-1 and DA-2 …
Liver cell damage caused by monoclonal antibody against an organ-specific membrane antigen in vivo and in vitro
1987
Summary Monoclonal antibodies have been raised against different antigenic determinants of normal rabbit hepatocytes. One antibody (2D3) recognized a liver-specific 43 kDa protein displayed exclusively on the basolateral portion of the hepatocellular membrane. Purified monoclonal antibodies were injected intravenously into rabits. Following the injection of antibody 2D3, a dose-dependent increase of liver enzyme activities in sera was observed. Within 8 h, marked morphological alterations of the hepatocytes, including multiple cell necroses, could be demonstrated by light and electron microscopy. When isolated vital rabbit hepatocytes in culture were used as targets, cytotoxic effects of th…
Monte Carlo investigation of a model for a three-dimensional orientational glass with short-range gaussian interaction
1987
The analogue of the Edwards-Anderson model for isotropic vector spin glasses, but taking quadrupoles instead of unit vectors at each lattice site of the considered simple cubic lattice, is studied as a model for an orientational glass. We study both the case where the quadrupole moment can orient in a three-dimensional space (m=3) and the case where the orientation is restricted to a plane (m=2), but otherwise the Hamiltonian is fully isotropic. ℋ= $$ - \sum\limits_{\left\langle {i,j} \right\rangle } {J_{ij} } \left[ {\left( {\sum\limits_{\mu = 1}^m {S_i^\mu S_j^\mu } } \right)^2 - \frac{1}{m}} \right]$$ , whereJ ij is a random gaussian interaction between nearest neighbors, andS i μ the μ'…
Lifetime of the 4D 3/2 and 4D 5/2 metastable states in Sr II
1987
Sr+ ions were confined in a r.f. quadrupole trap for times of the order of 30 min. The metastable 4D states were populated via laser excitation of the 5P states. The weak quadrupole transition rate into the 5S 1/2 ground state at 674 and 687 nm was deduced from observation of the exponential decay. At background pressures above 10−7 mbar the radiative decay is dominated by collisional quenching. Extrapolation of the observed decay rate to zero background pressure yields the radiative lifetimes. At pressures around 10−6 mbar fine structure mixing collisions between the 4D states have been observed, which lead to corrections of the extrapolated lifetimes. As the final result we obtain 395±38 …

Purification and identification of chlorophyll c1 from the green alga Mantoniella squamata
1987
Abstract The prasinophycean alga Mantoniella squamata contains besides chlorophyll a and b a third chlorophyll c -like pigment in its light-harvesting antenna. This third chlorophyll was purified by reverse phase and polyethylene chromatography in order to identify its chemical structure. The absorption and fluorescence spectra were measured not only from the doubly purified pigment, but also from its Mg-free derivates. The spectra were compared with those of authentic chlorophyll c and of Mg-2,4-desethyl-2,4-divinylpheoporphyrin a 5 monomethyl ester which was isolated from Rhodobacter capsulata . The results show that the pigment from Mantoniella agrees best with chlorophyll c 1 . In order…

Liquid-crystalline copolymers with covalently attached dichroic dyes were synthesized and characterized. Copolymers with high anthraquinone and trisazo-dye content were obtained by copolymerization of dye monomers with 4-cyanophenyl 4-(6-acryloyloxyhexyloxy)benzoate (1) and 6-acryloyloxyhexyl 4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)benzoate (2). Particular attention is given to the influence of the dye content and the dye structure on the liquid-crystalline behavior of the copolymers.
An antigen-independent physiological activation pathway for L3T4+ T lymphocytes.
1987
The data presented in this report describe an antigen-independent activation pathway leading to reinduction of proliferation of class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-restricted murine T cell lines that after previous antigen-specific stimulation reverted to a resting state. Antigen-independent proliferation and interleukin 2 (IL2)-receptor expression occur in the presence of splenic accessory cells, exogenous IL2 and a soluble factor(s) provisionally termed T cell-stimulating factor(s) (TSF). Each of these components is essential for inducing growth. TSF is found in the supernatant of an autoreactive T cell line upon stimulation with syngeneic accessory cells. Neither TSF nor acce…
