Lifetimes of charged and neutralD mesons
1987
We have measured the lifetimes of hadronically produced charged and neutralD mesons using silicon microstrip detectors and an active silicon target in the NA32 spectrometer at the CERN SPS. We obtainτD± = (10.9±1.51.9)·10−13s andτD(−)10 = (4.2±0.5)·10−13s based on 59 and 90 fully reconstructed decays respectively, giving a ratioτD±/τD(−)10 of 2.6 ±0.5.

Geometrical Transformations In The Fraunhofer Plane
1987
A virtual display of the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern is generated solely by illuminating the object with a point source. If this pattern is imaged with an anamorphic system, several linear geometrical transformations can be achieved. Furthermore, a nonsymmetrical Fourier transformer with a variable degree of anamorphic magnification on the Fraunhofer pattern can be implemented.
Focal Length Measuring Technique Using The Talbot Effect
1987
The Talbot effect - or self-imaging phenomenon - is applied to the measurement of focal lengths. The technique only requires axial distances to be measured and is suitable for both converging and diverging thick lenses.

EMG, muscle fibre and force production characteristics during a 1 year training period in elite weight-lifters.
1987
The effects of a 1 year training period on 13 elite weight-lifters were investigated by periodical tests of electromyographic, muscle fibre and force production characteristics. A statistically non-significant increase of 3.5% in maximal isometric strength of the leg extensors, from 4841 +/- 1104 to 5010 +/- 1012 N, occurred over the year. Individual changes in the high force portions of the force-velocity curve correlated (p less than 0.05-0.01) with changes in weight-lifting performance. Training months 5-8 were characterized by the lowest average training intensity (77.1 +/- 2.0%), and this resulted in a significant (p less than 0.05) decrease in maximal neural activation (IEMG) of the m…
Theory of first-order phase transitions
1987
An introductory review of various concepts about first-order phase transitions is given. Rules for classification of phase transitions as second or first order are discussed, as well as exceptions to these rules. Attention is drawn to the rounding of first-order transitions due to finite-size or quenched impurities. Computational methods to calculate phase diagrams for simple model Hamiltonians are also described. Particular emphasis is laid on metastable states near first-order phase transitions, on the 'stability limits' of such states (e.g. the 'spinodal curve' of the gas-liquid transition) and on the dynamic mechanisms by which metastable states decay (nucleation and growth of droplets …
Effect of the cytochrome P-450 inactivator 1-aminobenzotriazole on the metabolism of chlortoluron and isoproturon in wheat
1987
Abstract Roots of young wheat plants ( Triticum aestivum cv Clement) were treated with [ 14 C]chlortoluron or [ 14 C]isoproturon alone or mixed with 1-aminobenzotriazole (ABT), a mechanism-based inactivator of cytochrome P -450 monooxygenases. Radioactivity extracted from shoots slightly decreased during periods of metabolism, this decrease being reduced by ABT in the case of isoproturon. ABT strongly inhibited the metabolism of both herbicides. Accumulation of metabolites was generally depressed in the presence of ABT; however, levels of the free N -monodemethylated derivatives were little or not affected. It is concluded that ABT is a synergist of chlortoluron and isoproturon in wheat bec…
Diflubenzuron-Induced alterations during in vitro development ofTenebrio molitor pupal integument
1987
The effects of diflubenzuron (DFB) in Tenebrio molitor pupae were first investigated on cuticle secretion induced by 20-hydroxyecdysone in vitro. The sternal integuments were treated by DFB either 3 days before culture or during culture. DFB, when applied before culture, did not prevent the molting hormone from inducing a new cuticle deposition by integument explants in vitro. However, this cuticle showed several architectural alterations and a thickness reduction. When applied during the culture in the presence of 20-hydroxyecdysone, DFB at high dose (≥ 20 μg/ml) was able to inhibit cuticle secretion, but lower doses (⩽ 10 μg/ml) resulted in epicuticle deposition. These observations confir…
Effects of Intravenous Erythromycin Lactobionate in Respiratory Infections
1987
The antibiotic erythromycin lactobionate given intravenously acts almost exclusively on Gram-positive bacteria. Even at high plasma and tissue concentrations there is an almost total absence of side-effects. It could be considered, therefore, as first choice in the treatment of patients with infectious respiratory diseases. Most of the 40 patients admitted to the present study were elderly and all had either acute or chronic and becoming acute respiratory disease. Their clinical symptoms and levels of phlogosis improved on treatment with erythromycin lactobionate without any interruption of therapy due to side-effects and toxicity. The absence of unfavourable pharmacological interactions f…
EPM calculations of E2/M1 mixing ratios for even samarium isotopes 146–152Sm
1987
Abstract The M1 operator and the E2/M1 mixing ratios, Δ (E2/M1), are discussed in the framework of the extended phonon projection model (EPM). The model is applied to 146, 148, 150, 152 Sm to describe their M1 properties. Comparison is made between the EPM, the consistent- Q formalism (CQF) of the basic interacting-boson approximation (IBA-1) and the experimental Δ(E2/M1) data. Both theoretical approaches give reasonably good results and parameter systematics.
Sulfuric acid cleanup and KOH-ethanol treatment for confirmation of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls: application to wastewate…
1987
Abstract The efficacy of sulfuric acid cleanup and KOH-ethanol hydrolysis confirmation was studied for 22 organochlorine pesticides and 2 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Mean recoveries for different treatment times are given. The method was applied to analysis of several wastewater samples by gas chromatography with electron capture detection. Organochlorine compounds were extracted by using separatory funnels and 15% diethyl ether in hexane as extractant. All the compounds studied could be analyzed except trifluralin, dichloran, dieldrin, and endrin, which were destroyed after treatment with concentrated H2S04. The pesticides found most commonly in the samples analyzed were fenson, tetr…
57Fe,61Ni, and121Sb Mssbauer study of oxidic spinel ferrites CoxNi5/3?xFeSb1/3O4
1987
Antimony substituted nickel ferrites Co x Ni5/3−xFeSb1/3O4 withx=0,1/3,1,4/3, and 5/3 were prepared by the common ceramic technique, and the single-phase structure was confirmed by x-ray powder diffraction.57Fe Mossbauer spectra were recorded at 4.2 K with and without an applied magnetic fieldHlong=60 kOe in order to determine the cation distribution and the spin structure. Utilizing the cation distributions and the Yafet-Kittel spin structures for B-site Fe3+ ions, derived from Mossbauer experiments the calculated magnetic moments are in excellent agreement with the experimental values at 4.2 K. The existence of Ni2+ ions in crystallographic A-sites was confirmed by61Ni Mossbauer spectrosc…

Continuous fractionation and solution properties of PIB. I. Search for the best mixed solvent and first results of the continuous polymer fractionati…
1987
To adopt a recently developed method for large scale fractionation (CPF = continuous polymer fractionation, a special kind of counter current extraction) to polyisobutylene (PIB), a systematic search for the best mixed solvent was performed. For this purpose, the essential parts of the phase diagrams solvent/nonsolvent/PIB were determined for 21 mixed solvents by cloud-point measurements; with eight systems of special interest, the molecular weight distributions of the polymers contained in the coexisting phases were also studied. On the basis of these experiments and of considerations concerning additional criteria for the performance of the continuous counter current extraction, the mixed…
OPTIMUM DESIGN OF REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES UNDER VARIABLE LOADINGS
1987
Abstract This paper presents a method for optimal design of reinforced concrete (RC) structures, subjected to quasi-static variable loads and accounting for cross-sections limited ductility requirements. It consists of a very simple refinement procedure to be applied in the classical Optimal Shakedown Design, (OSD), which leads to a strengthened structure satisfying the requisite that the actual plastic relative rotations, developed at a specified set of critical sections as a result of a variable repeated loading program, do not exceed given upper limits. This strengthened design is a safe but not strictly optimal design and is obtained using the simple rule that the steel reinforcement ar…
Cell wall mannoproteins during the population growth phases in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
1987
Mannoproteins from cell walls of Saccharomyces cerevisiae synthesized at successive stages of the population growth cycle have been solubilized with Zymolyase and subsequently analyzed. The major change along the population cycle concerned a large size mannoprotein material; the size of the newly-synthesized molecules varied from 120,000–500,000 (mean of about 200,000) at early exponential phase to 250,000–350,000 (mean of about 300,000) at late exponential phase. These differences are due to modifications in the amount of N-glycosidically linked mannose residues, since the size of the peptide moiety was 90,000–100,000 at all growth stages and the level of O-glycosylation changed only sligh…
Ontogeny of gonadotropin releasing hormone and gonadotropin immunoreactivity in brain and pituitary of normal and estrogen-treated guppies, Poecilia …
1987
Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) and gonadotropic hormone (GTH) were identified by immunohistochemistry in the brains and pituitaries of neonate, juvenile and adult guppies. GTH was present in some cells of the pars intermedia (pi) and proximal pars distalis (ppd) of all animals. GnRH was found in the perikarya of the nucleus olfactoretinalis. In the pituitaries of juvenile 30-day-old guppies, GnRH-immunoreactive cells existed in a "juvenile pattern", whereas in adult animals GnRH was recognized in only a few cells. GnRH-immunoreactive fibers were seen in the pituitaries of animals that were 30 days or older. In adult guppies, the ventral and lateral ppd (the gonadotropic region) conta…
Metabolic response of endurance athletes to training with added load.
1987
Endurance athletes were divided into experimental (n=12) and control (n=12) groups to investigate the effects of extra-load training on energy metabolism during exercise. A vest weighing 9%–10% body weight was worn every day from morning to evening for 4 weeks including every (n=6) or every other (n=6) training session. After 4 weeks the control group had a lower blood lactate concentration during submaximal running, whereas the experimental group had significantly higher blood lactate and oxygen uptake (p<0.01–p<0.05), and a lower 2 mmol lactate threshold (p<0.05) and an increased blood lactate concentration after a short running test to exhaustion (p<0.05). Those experimental subjects (n=…

Experimental investigations on a model of cryogenic edema.
1987
The role of mechanisms underlying formation and progression of vasogenic brain edema is investigated. On this purpose, cerebral edema was produced by cortical freezing in two different brain situations in rabbits (with or without replacement of bone flap). BBB (Blood-Brain Barrier) breakdown was evaluated by observation of Evans blue extravation, while a histopathological evaluation was carried out by light and transmission electron microscopy. Water content of brain tissue was determined by the wet/dry weight ratio method. Comparison of extension and intensity of cerebral edema between these two groups of animals shows a statistically significant difference: there was evidence of higher wa…
Alport's syndrome: specificity and pathogenesis of glomerular basement membrane alterations.
1987
In Alport's syndrome (AS) thinning and splitting of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) are assumed to be characteristic ultrastructural alterations. Both lesions are, however, non-specific because they can occur in other glomerulopathies. In addition, splitting may be found in non-glomerular structures. It should be emphasized that the characteristic lesion in AS is a result of the widespread combination of thin and split GBM in the same biopsy specimen. In our opinion the basic lesion is the thin GBM, which is characterized by a lamina densa (measuring 50-150 nm in thickness) which may begin to split as a result of focal detachment of podocyte pedicles (spacing) and repeated subepithel…
13C NMR spectra of eudesmanolides I—eudesman-12,6-olides
1987
The 13C NMR spectra of 26 eudesmanolides of natural and synthetic origin have been measured, including the naturally occurring sesquiterpene lactones artemisin, torrentin, rothin-A and rothin-B and several semi-synthetic eudesman-12,6-olides obtained from artemisin. The chemical shift values of the different compounds are compared and the effects of the substituents are discussed.
On superconvergence techniques
1987
A brief survey with a bibliography of superconvergence phenomena in finding a numerical solution of differential and integral equations is presented. A particular emphasis is laid on superconvergent schemes for elliptic problems in the plane employing the finite element method.
The effect of recombinant alpha-interferon treatment on serum levels of hepatitis B virus-encoded proteins in man.
1987
The effect of alpha-interferon treatment on serum levels of hepatitis B virus-encoded proteins was analyzed in eight patients with chronic type B hepatitis who participated in a pilot study of interferon therapy. Three individuals became HBsAg-negative, 4 lost HBeAg but remained HBsAg-positive and 1 remained positive for both HBsAg and HBeAg. Initiation of interferon treatment was rapidly followed by reduction or loss of hepatitis B virus DNA in the serum but by little immediate change in hepatitis B virus antigen levels. Changes in hepatitis B virus antigens were usually delayed. Loss of HBsAg from the serum was preceded by the sequential disappearance of pre-S-encoded proteins (pre-S1 and…
Measurement of Photosynthesis and Transpiration in Spruce Trees with Various Degrees of Damage
1987
Summary In the context of a project on physiological and biochemical characterization of spruce with different degrees of damage, the C02 and H2O gas exchange of 22-year-old spruce from a location in the Hunsru.ck (West Germany) were measured in summer 1985. The measurements were carried out on shoots from 1984 and were set up as a pair comparison, i.e. the measurement data of a tree with symptoms of damage were always compared with a tree in the immediate vicinity which phenotypically showed less damage. Diurnal course measurements in the open air revealed a marked reduction of photosynthesis depending on the degree of damage of the trees. If one plots photosynthetic rate against light int…
Androgenic-anabolic steroid effects on serum thyroid, pituitary and steroid hormones in athletes.
1987
Endocrine responses in seven power athletes were investigated during a 12 week strength training period, when the athletes were taking high doses of androgenic-anabolic steroids, and during the 13 weeks following drug withdrawal. During the use of steroids significant decreases (P less than 0.05 to 0.001) in the serum concentrations of thyroid stimulating hormone, thyroxine, triidothyronine, free thyroxine, and thyroid hormone-binding globulin (TBG) were found, whereas the value of triidothyronine uptake increased (P less than 0.001). In relation to the changes in the thyroid function parameters measured, we suggest that the primary target of androgen action was TBG biosynthesis. In five of…
Variability of ecdysteroid-induced cell cycle alterations in Drosophila Kc sublines.
1987
. The cell cycle of two lines isolated from Drosophila Kc cells was followed by flow cytofluorometry and cell counting. The first line is the 8-9K clone which grew in a medium supplemented with 5% serum; the second, named subline Kc0, grew in a serum-free medium. The stationary phase is characterized by a G2 cell accumulation: 73% in the 8-9K clone and 50% in the Kc0 subline. When the medium was supplemented with the steroid moulting hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone, more than 90% of 8-9K cells and 65% of Kc0 cells were progressively arrested in G2. In the continuous presence of 20-hydroxyecdysone, most of the 8-9K cells remain G2-arrested; no massive G2 release into M was observed and only a few…
Synthesis and cell surface display of class II determinants by long-term propagated rat T line cells
1987
We have investigated the capacity of the encephalitogenic BS rat T cell line bs 83 and its variant clone bs 83.III.C6 to synthesize and express RT1.B-specific class II molecule subsets defined by monoclonal antibodies (mAb) MRC-OX6 and MRC-OX3. Earlier studies had indicated that mAb MRC-OX6 recognizes three distinct molecular species: an immature oligomeric polypeptide chain complex comprised of the polymorphic subunits alpha, beta and the invariant proteins of the gamma group; a biosynthetic intermediate composed of post-translationally modified alpha, beta and gamma chain (denoted p35) and a fully glycosylated alpha, beta two-chain complex derived from the plasma membrane. MRC-OX3 was sho…

Continuous fractionation and solution properties of PIB. II. CPF optimization
1987
The quality of polymer fractionation depends on the choice of the mixed solvent as well as on the particular conditions of operating the continuous countercurrent extraction. With a polyisobutylene (PIB) sample of medium molecular weight Mw = 98,400 g/mol and U = (Mw/Mn) − 1 = 1.4 plus the mixed solvents toluene/2-butanone (TOL/MEK) and n-heptane/2-butanone (HEP/MEK) (both giving comparably good fractionation in equilibrium experiments), possible ways to optimize the CPF were tested. The mixed solvent HEP/MEK turns out to be superior to TOL/MEK for kinetic reasons. Due to the larger gap between its density and that of the pure polymer, the coexisting phases can still move through the column…
Demonstration of antibodies to the surface (anti-p41) and core proteins (anti-p24) of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in individuals positive …
1987
Diagnosis of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) relies on the demonstration of antibody to this virus. Occasionally, the combined analysis of sera using ELISA and western blot reveals false-positive results. We have compared a newly developed test to detect antibodies to the core (anti-p24) and surface (anti-p41) proteins of HIV with the established tests described above. Anti-p24 and anti-p41 were negative in three individuals positive for anti-HIV by ELISA and immunoblot; they had a low risk to acquire HIV infection and were clinically and immunologically normal and suspected false positive previously. In 62 individuals at risk, anti-p41 was always positive while anti-p…
Selective Sacral Nerve Blockade for the Treatment of Unstable Bladders
1987
38 patients with severe urge or urge incontinence, who did not respond to conservative therapy, were treated with selective sacral nerve blockade using a local anesthetic (bupivacaine). 6 patients of this group had definite selective sacral denervation with phenol. In 31 patients a urodynamic study was done previous to the sacral nerve block as well as 10 and 90 min after the injection. Within the first 2-7 weeks the success rate was about 70% in regard to bladder capacity and mean volume at first desire to void. On long-term follow-up (greater than 7 months), the success rate decreased to about 16%. Only 1 patient of the phenol group still has complete detrusor areflexia for now more than …
Effects of dynamic exercise and metabolic control on left ventricular performance in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus
1987
In subclinical diabetic cardiomyopathy, previous reports did not positively correlate the altered cardiac performance with metabolic parameters. Fifteen insulin-dependent diabetic subjects, without any clinical or instrumental evidence of heart diseases, were studied. Signs of diabetic microangiopathy were absent. Systolic time intervals, metabolic and hormonal parameters (blood glucose, free fatty acids, blood lactate and plasma norepinephrine) were evaluated at rest and after dynamic exercise during poor (MAGE 6.36 +/- 0.72 mmol/l) and good (MAGE 3.46 +/- 0.66 mmol/l) metabolic control, obtained by means of insulin therapy. Rest values of systolic time intervals were normal during poor an…
