The chemiluminescence activity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells during acute experimental allergic encephalomyelitis
1987
The spontaneous chemiluminescence activity (CL-A) of peripheral mononuclear cells (MNC) was examined in Lewis rats with acute experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), compared to rats immunized with complete adjuvant (n = 11) and healthy animals (n = 16). In rats with EAE, CL-A increased sharply 8-9 days after immunization (3420 +/- 3124 counts/10 s, n = 16) at the time of flattening of the weight curve. This CL-A peak was compared to that of animals immunized with complete adjuvant: 765 +/- 441 counts/10 s (P = 0.01) and healthy rats: 450 +/- 172 counts/10 s (P = 0.0001). After this initial peak in EAE rats, CL-A decreased almost to normal values when animals lost weight (746 +/- 251…
Magnetostructural correlations in parallel square-planar halo-bridged copper(II) dimers. Part II: Structure and magnetic properties of [Cu2(terpy)2Br…
1987
Abstract The crystal and molecular structure of bis-μ- bromo-bis [(2,2′:6′,2″ - terpyridyl) copper (II) ] bis (hexafluorophosphate) has been determined from three dimensional single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, collected by counter techniques. The blue crystals belong to the monoclinic system, space group P21/a, with four formula units in a unit cell of dimensions a=20.40(2), b=13.35(2), c=6.453(8) A and β=97.74(9)°. The structure was solved using a refinement procedure and starting with the atomic positions of the isostructural complex [Cu(terpy)- Cl]2(PF6)2, to final agreement factors R=0.071 (Rw=0.077). The structure consists of dimeric molecules bridged by two bromine atoms. The coor…

Isolation From Human Calcium Oxalate Renal Stones of Nephrocalcin, a Glycoprotein Inhibitor of Calcium Oxalate Crystal Growth. Evidence That Nephroca…
1987
We have determined that the organic matrix of calcium oxalate kidney stones contains a glycoprotein inhibitor ofcalcium oxalate crystal growth (nephrocalcin) that resembles nephrocalcin present in the urine of patients with calcium oxalate stones and differs from nephrocalcin from the urine of normal people. Pulverized calcium oxalate renal stones were extracted with 0.05M EDTA, pH 8.0; nephrocalcin eluted in five peaks using DEAE-cellulose column chromatography, and each peak was further resolved by Sephacryl S-200 column chromatography. Four ofthe fiveDEAE peaks corresponded to those usually found in nephrocalcin from urine; the fifth eluted at a lower ionic strength than any found in uri…
A Simple Microassay for the Determination of Hydrazine in Biological Samples. Effect of Hydrazine and Isoniazid on Liver and Brain Glutathione
1987
A simple microassay for the determination of hydrazine in laboratory samples is presented. The colored product of the reaction of p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde with hydrazine was tested at 470 nm using double-beam mode in different samples. Internal standards and data on blood serum, liver, and brain of rats treated with hydrazine or isoniazid are presented. The tissue glutathione content of these rats was determined, and the possible implication of glutathione in the brain toxicity of hydrazine is discussed.
Kompensationsmechanismen von Schädelasymmetrien
1987
Antibiotic as Ligand. Coordinating Behavior of the Cephalexin Towards Zn(II) and Cd(II) Ions
1987
The complex formation equilibria of Zn(II) and Cd(II) with cephalexin have been studied through potentiometric titrations. Experimental data were analyzed using the least squares computer program SUPERQUAD. The stability constants were 1g beta ZnCEX+ = 2.40, 1g beta Zn(CEX)(OH) = -4.54, 1g beta CdCEX+ = 2.18, and 1g beta Cd(CEX)(OH) = -5.18 (I = 0.1 M NaNO3), CEX complexes of formulae Zn(CEX)2(3)H2O and Cd(CEX)(OH)H2O have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, conductivity measurements, and electronic and NMR spectra. The thermal behavior of the synthesized compounds were studied by TGA and DTA. We conclude that the metal ion interacts with the amido group of…

Some Remarks on Exponential Families
1987
Abstract The following facts may serve to provide a feeling about how restrictive the assumption of an exponential family is. (a) A one-parameter exponential family in standard form with respect to Lebesgue measure is a location parameter family iff it is normal with fixed variance. (b) It is a scale parameter family iff it is gamma with fixed shape parameter. Both facts are known (see Borges and Pfanzagl 1965; Ferguson 1962; Lindley 1958) but may not have received as much attention as they deserve. Under the assumption of differentiable densities, short and elementary proofs are given.

Residual coronary stenosis after thrombolysis with rt-PA or streptokinase: acute results and 3 weeks follow-up
1987
Ninety-one patients with acute myocardial infarction were assigned to intravenous treatment with streptokinase or rt-PA as part of the randomized trial carried out by the European Study Group for Recombinant Tissue-Type Plasminogen Activator (rt-PA). A patent coronary artery was found in 37 of 45 (82%) patients treated with rt-PA and in 27 of 46 (59%) patients treated with streptokinase 75-90 minutes after start of infusion. Patients were subsequently anticoagulated with heparin or dicoumarol up to a repeat angiography 3 weeks after the infarction. Of the 64 patients with successful reperfusion, 3 died and 3 suffered reocclusion of the vessel. Quantitative analysis of the coronary stenosis …
Stimulation of Spermatogenesis and Biological Paternity by Intranasal (Low Dose) Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) in a Male with Kallmann's Synd…
1987
Intranasal (in) GnRH spray caused induction and maintenance of spermatogenesis and biological paternity in a 28-yr-old man with Kallmann's syndrome. Prior treatment had included GnRH analog administration, which failed to induce puberty, and testosterone (T) enanthate weekly. Prior hCG/human menopausal gonadotropin therapy had resulted in high normal serum T levels and near-normal semen quality, but during subsequent hCG therapy, spermatogenesis markedly decreased. The patient had then received 250 mg T enanthate/month for 2 yr and 7 months; it was discontinued 7 weeks before the in GnRH study began. At its start (July 1984) the subject's testis size was 7 mL, and he had azoospermia, low se…
Epidemiology of Q fever in Italy and in other Mediterranean countries
1987
Abstract The history of Q fever in Italy may be divided into three periods: epidemic in character after the Second World War, endemic occurrence from 1960 to 1980, and sporadic occurrence at present. Clinical symptoms are unspecific, and diagnosis must be confirmed by serology and isolation of the causative agent. The reported incidence is consequently underestimated. Results are reported of a seroepidemiologic survey in animals and humans in the Italian region and western Sicily. In the Mediterranean area several epidemic foci are still present. The need of further studies to evaluate the incidence of Q fever and to shed more light upon the epidemiology of Coxiella burnetii infections is s…
The ultra-thin bronchoscope in management of the difficult paediatric airway
1987
The use of an ultra-thin flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope with a single lumen diameter of 2.7 mm at the distal tip to assist intubation of paediatric patients with a difficult airway is reported. Two patients (ages 30 months and 18 months) with mandibular hypoplasia and one patient (three months) with the Pierre-Robin syndrome are reported. In each case two fiberoptic bronchoscopes were used. The first allowed introduction of topical local anaesthetic while the second and smaller one was used for tube placement.
Neuronal intestinal dysplasia
1987
Findings in 23 children with neuronal intestinal dysplasia (NID) are presented. Twelve children had Hirschsprung's disease that masked the existence of proximal NID. In all cases the diagnosis was established by histological-histochemical examination. Amelioration of symptoms by conservative treatment alone was achieved in 4 children; in 13 cases colostomy was necessary. In 6 patients colon resection was performed: 2 suffered from both colitis and obstruction; the other 4 were treated for obstruction, multiple perforations, persistant adynamia of the left colon, and fistulation. In 9 patients the colostomy was closed. Four of 6 children who did not have sonographic confirmation of motility …
Positron annihilation studies of binary Ni-based alloys
1987
Positron annihilation studies of Ni–1 at. % X (X = Pb, In and Zn) alloys have been performed. The experimentally observed changes in the parameters connecting the shape of angular correlation curve with the kind and concentration of crystal lattice defects are correlated with the values of the vacancy-solute binding energy calculated from the vacancy model of melting.
Temperature-dependent effects of increased intraluminal pressure on serotonin release from the vascularly perfused guinea pig ileum
1987
Isolated segments of the guinea pig ileum were vascularly perfused and the release of endogenous serotonin into the portal effluent was measured. Peristalsis was induced by raising the intraluminal hydrostatic pressure by 500 Pa for 5 min. Serotonin release increased during peristalsis induced by fluid of 37 degrees C, but decreased when the temperature of the intraluminal fluid was between 13 degrees C and 22 degrees C. In the presence of naloxone (0.3 mumol/l) raising the intraluminal pressure with fluid of 37 degrees C caused an inhibition of the serotonin release which was blocked by scopolamine (0.1 mumol/l). Naloxone did not affect the inhibition of serotonin release during peristalsi…
Excess enthalpies of solution of primary and secondary alcohols in dodecyldimethylamine oxide micellar solutions
1987
The excess enthalpies of solution with respect to water of some primary and secondary alcohols in dodecyldimethylamine oxide (DDAO) micellar solutions were measured by mixing aqueous solutions of alcohols with surfactant solutions. Standard free energies, enthalpies and entropies were obtained from the distribution of alcohols between aqueous and micellar phases. It is shown that thermodynamics of transfer of secondary alcohols from aqueous to the DDAO micellar phase differ slightly from those of their corresponding primary alcohols, that the additivity rule holds for free energies of transfer and that enthalpy and entropy display convex curves. The present data are compared with those from…
Results of an Open Clinical Trial of Brofaromine (CGP 11 305 A), a Competitive, Selective, and Short-Acting Inhibitor of MAO-A in Major Endogenous De…
1987
In an open clinical trial the authors treated 18 hospitalized patients suffering from endogenous depression with brofaromine (CGP 11305A), a competitive, selective, and short-acting inhibitor of type A monoamine oxidase (MAO). Four patients were defined as good responders, as they had a final HAMD score of between 0 and 7 points. Four patients were judged as improved, with final HAMD scores of between 8 and 15 points, while the remaining eight patients failed to respond (final HAMD score greater than or equal to 16 points). The major observations were a beneficial influence on drive in most patients, while paranoid symptoms worsened markedly, rendering the substance contraindicated in psych…

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha but not TNF-beta induces secretion of colony stimulating factor for macrophages (CSF-1) by human monocytes
1987
Abstract Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha has been identified as a major inducer of colony stimulating factor (CSF)-secretion by human vascular endothelial cells and fibroblasts. In the present study we assessed the capacity of TNFs to induce release of CSF-1 from highly purified peripheral blood monocyte preparations. Whereas monocytes do not accumulate CSF-1 messenger (m)RNA constitutively and consequently do not produce CSF-1 protein, CSF-1 mRNA and protein secretion became detectable, when monocytes were cultured in the presence of TNF-alpha, that was synergistically enhanced by interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma). However, under identical experimental conditions TNF-beta failed to induce mon…
Intraoperative Evaluation of Reconstruction of the Atrio ventricular Valves by Transesophageal Echocardiography
1987
In a total of 30 operations the mitral valve was reconstructed in 18, the tricuspid valve in 11, and both AV-valves in one patient. The result of reconstruction was tested first in the open arrested heart by injection of crystalloid solution into the appropriate ventricle either through the reconstructed valve or one of the great arteries. Upon termination of cardiopulmonary bypass the valve function was examined in the beating heart by means of transesophageal contrast echocardiography (TEE). For visualization 0.5-1.0 cc of agitated Gelifundol was injected into the ventricle. In 22 patients open testing as well as echocardiographic visualization showed identical and good operative results.…
Immunoelectron microscopic observations on the inflammatory infiltrates and HLA antigens in hepatitis B and non-A, non-B.
1987
The present knowledge of the inflammatory reaction occurring in situ during hepatitis B favors a T cell-dependent MHC-restricted immune response. However, the reports in the literature are primarily based on the application of monoclonal antibodies directed at different lymphocyte subsets which discern only lymphocytic phenotypes and do not reflect the actual situation adequately. Therefore, we investigated the liver biopsies of patients with hepatitis B (28 patients) and non-A, non-B (21 patients) by immunoelectron microscopy with monoclonal antibodies directed at lymphocyte subtypes (pan-B, pan-T, T8, T4 and NKH1) and at activation epitopes (IL-2 receptor, TA1 and T11/3) as well, in order…
Glucose and Erythrocyte ATP: Distinctive Effects of Dipyridamole and of Ticlopidine
1987
This experiment suggests the following points: 1. Erythrocytes in control patients and in atherosclerosis patients seem to have a variable grade of affinity for adenosine and for plasma glucose. This variable grade seems to fix the level of the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) reserves and induces the erythrocytes' deformability. 2. The drop in the level of ATP reserves that induces the poor deformability of the erythrocytes in atherosclerosis patients would appear to be caused by two consecutive shortages: first a shortage that seems to be related to a deficiency of erythrocyte adenosine as the ATP shortage disappears with dipyridamole treatment and then a shortage induced by the lack of eryt…
Mechanical work and efficiency in ergometer bicycling at aerobic and anaerobic thresholds
1987
Internal and external mechanical work, energy consumption and mechanical efficiency were studied in constant-load ergometer bicycling at five different power outputs below, equal to, and above the aerobic (AerT) and anaerobic (AnT) thresholds. The gross, net and true efficiencies of the whole body in five male subjects were calculated. The work against the external load was defined as the external mechanical work. The internal mechanical work was calculated as the sum of the increments of kinetic and potential energy in all body segments by using methods of film analysis. Total energy consumption was measured by combining aerobic and anaerobic energy production. When the power output of the…
Double inlet left ventricular main chamber, subaortic small left sided right ventricle and interrupted aortic arch type A. What operation is indicate…
1987
A case of a 23 year old female patient who suffered from the complex congenital heart lesion of a double inlet left ventricular main chamber, subaortic small left sided right ventricle and interrupted aortic arch type A is reported. With equally high blood pressures, the perfusion in the upper half of the body was maintained through the ascending aorta while the lower half and the lungs were supplied through the pulmonary artery and a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Angiographically, the bulbo-ventricular foramen appeared to be nonrestrictive. However, distinct signs of muscular subaortic stenosis were detected. The hemodynamic status principally allowed surgical correction when this became…
On the metric properties of dynamic time warping
1987
Recently, some new and promising methods have been proposed to reduce the number of Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) computations in Isolated Word Recognition. For these methods to be properly applicable, the verification of the Triangle Inequality (TI) by the DTW-based Dissimilarity Measure utilized seems to be an important prerequisite.

Solution properties of polyelectrolytes. II. Comparison of the effects of both polyion and eluent salt concentrations on the calibrations in aqueous …
1987
The elution behaviour of charged water-soluble polymers (sodium polystyrene sulphonate) in both salt-free and NaCl-containing aqueous mobile phases has been investigated by size-exclusion chromatography. A comparative analysis has been established between the results as a function of polyion and salt concentrations, which demonstrates that the chromatographic behaviour is similar in both cases. The variation of the slopes of the different concentration-dependent calibration curves is discussed in terms of polyelectrolyte conformational changes. Finally, a semi-empirical model has been developed to predict the dependence of the elution volume in either polyion or salt concentration, and its …
.Chromosome sex determination and Y-autosome fusion in Blennius tentacularis Brunnich, 1765 (Pisces, Blennidae)
1987
Diploid modal numbers of 2n=48 for females, and 2n=48 and 2n=47 for males of Blennius tentacularis caught in the Gulf of Palermo (Sicily) are established. Chromosome sex-determination is proposed for this species in which a Y-autosome fusion has been found.
Computertomographie der Atelektase
1987
After breathing pure oxygen, total atelectasis of one lung was produced in ten dogs; its development and regression was followed by CT and by conventional radiology. 30 seconds after cessation of ventilation, it was possible to show a rise in CT density of the atelectatic lung from -764 +/- 32 HU to -739 +/- 49 HU. The average time from the cessation of ventilation to total atelectasis averaged 5.5 +/- 1.1 minutes. The earliest sign on conventional radiographs was often seen after 30 seconds and usually after 60 seconds and consisted of mediastinal displacement. Extensive atelectasis regressed in only one out of six animals within one hour after resuming ventilation. The experimental method…
Excretion and metabolism of phenol, 4-nitrophenol and 2-methylphenol by the frogs Rana temporaria and Xenopus laevis.
1987
1. Rana and Xenopus excrete 90-95% dose, and metabolize 50-65% dose of phenol, 4-nitrophenol and 2-methylphenol within 24 h, to about the same extent. 2. Kinetic data for the excretion of phenols from both species fit a two-compartment model. The elimination constants of Rana and Xenopus are not significantly different. 3. Metabolism is mostly conjugation by glucuronidation and sulphation of the original phenols. Additionally, oxidations leading to dihydroxyphenols and benzoic acid from 2-methylphenol, and reduction of 4-nitrophenol occur, followed by conjugation. 4. There is an important difference between the metabolite patterns of Rana and Xenopus in that the latter is unable to glucuron…

Solution properties of polyelectrolytes. I. Exclusion chromatography of sodium polystyrene sulphonate in salt-free water as eluent
1987
The effect of concentration of sodium polystyrene sulphonate on the elution volume in exclusion chromatography has been investigated using salt-free water as eluent. A non-linear increase in the elution volume has been observed with increasing injected sample concentration. Concentration-dependent calibrations have been obtained which approach the universal calibration for uncharged polymers (dextrans) as polyelectrolyte concentration increases. The separation mechanisms are interpreted in terms of electrostatic and hydrodynamic interactions. A semi-empirical model is proposed to predict concentration effects of linear polyions in exclusion chromatography and good agreement has been found b…
Fast Local Motion around T g in a Molecular Glass as Observed by Incoherent Neutron Scattering
1987
Incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering experiments on a molecular glass (1,3,5-tri-α-naphtylbenzene, C36H24) are reported. We find clear evidence for an anomalously strong decrease of the elastic and a corresponding increase of the inelastic scattering around the glass transition temperature. The line shape of this extra inelastic intensity gives evidence for a quasi-elastic scattering implying the existence of a localized and fast (τc ≈ 4.10-12s) molecular motion. From the elastic incoherent structure factor (EISF) a mean jump length ≤ 0.6 A is estimated. The significance of this motion as precursor of the glass instability is discussed within the framework of dynamic glass transition…
