Characterization of subcolumnar reserve cells and other epithelia of human uterine cervix. Demonstration of diverse cytokeratin polypeptides in reser…
1987
We have analyzed the expression of cytokeratin polypeptides in subcolumnar reserve cells of the human uterine endocervical mucosa and the other epithelial cells using immunoperoxidase and immunofluorescence microscopy as well as by applying two-dimensional gel electrophoresis to microdissected cytoskeletal preparations. Endocervical columnar cells were uniformly positive for antibodies directed against the simple epithelium-type cytokeratins nos. 7, 8, 18, and 19, while a variable proportion of these cells was stained by an antibody against cytokeratin no. 4. Reserve cells were not only positive for cytokeratins nos. 8 (weakly and variably) and 19 but were also decorated by antibody KA 1, w…
The effect of training on aerobic power characteristics of young cross-country skiers.
1987
The influences of growth, training and various training methods were investigated by analysing long-term training effects in young cross-country and biathlon skiers (n = 129). Some athletes (n = 49) were studied six times in three years and some at least once a year during a four year period (n = 48). During three summer training periods skiers emphasized either intensive training or distance training or continued to train normally. The results indicated that maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) and heart volume increased between 15 and 20 years of age and the most significant changes in heart volume were observed between 16 and 18 years of age. International level skiers were able to increase t…
Laser spectroscopy of radioactive isotopes
1987
The experimental conditions for laser spectroscopy of shortlived isotopes is discussed with respect to nuclear lifetime, reaction rates and samples preparation by on-line mass-separator techniques. The method of collinear laser spectroscopy is presented with results for medium mass elements near the closed proton shell Z=50. An interpretation of magnetic moments, spectroscopic quadrupole moments and the parabolic shape of the isotope shift in this region of nuclei is given.
Intrinsic organization of the medial cerebral cortex of the lizardLacerta pityusensis: A golgi study
1987
The morphology of cells and the organization of axons were studied in Golgi-Colonnier and toluidine blue stained preparations from the medial cerebral cortex of the lizard Lacerta pityusensis. In the medial cortex, six strata were distinguished between the superficial glial membrane and the ependyma. Strata I and II formed the outer plexiform layer, stratum III formed the cellular layer, and strata IV go VI the inner plexiform layer. The outer plexiform layer contained smooth bipolar neurons; their dendrites were oriented anteroposteriorly and their axons were directed towards the posterior zone of the brain. Five neuronal types were observed in the cellular layer. The spinous pyramidal neu…
Cerebral blood flow, computerized tomography and angiography in 562 cases of cerebrovascular insufficiency
1987
The measurement of cerebral blood flow (CBF) in addition to cerebral computerized tomography (CT) and angiography is most reliable in cases of transient ischemic attacks (TIA) and prolonged reversible ischemic neurologic deficits (PRIND). Alterations of CBF can be detected in symptom-free intervals. The cerebrovascular reactivity to CO2 stimulus is regarded as an especially suitable tool to prove the cerebrovascular reserve. If it is diminished, cerebral angiography should be carried out since it will often show major obstructive lesions. Angiography shows no sure correlation between CBF and collateral circulation. Strong opthalmic pathways in unilateral occlusion of the internal carotid ar…

The intrinsic viscosities, [η], for the ternary systems alkane (1)/2-butanone (2)/poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)(3), with the alkanes decane, dodecane and hexadecane, are determined at 20,0°C. The constants a of the Mark-Houwink equation and the constant of the unperturbed dimensions, KΘ, of the polymer are evaluated over the whole composition range of the binary solvent mixture. [η] shows a pronounced maximum at intermediate compositions as found in cosolvent mixtures. In these cosolvent mixtures, the numerical values of KΘ are higher than in the single-component solvents, because the cosolvent mixtures correspond to a mixed solvent with an excess free energy, GE ≥ 0, the increase in KΘ bei…
A long-term (two years) clinical trial with S-adenosylmethionine for the treatment of osteoarthritis
1987
In a long-term multicenter open trial involving 10 general practitioners, the efficacy and tolerance of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) were studied for 24 months in 108 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, and spine. At the end of the 24-month observation period, 97 of the patients were still in the study. The patients received 600 mg of SAMe daily (equivalent to three tablets of 200 mg each) for the first two weeks and thereafter 400 mg daily (equivalent to two tablets of 200 mg each) until the end of the 24th month of treatment. Separate evaluations were made for osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, cervical spine, and dorsal/lumbar spine. The severity of the clinical symptoms (morning…

The banding pattern of polytene chromosomes of Drosophila guanche compared with that of D. subobscura.
1987
A detailed map of the salivary gland chromosomes of Drosophila guanche is presented and compared to the standard gene arrangements of D. subobscura. Generally, the polytene chromosomc banding patterns of the two species show a high degrce of homology. Only Segment I of the sex chromosome (Chromosome A) shows marked differences. The banding pattern proposed for this segment in D. guanche could have originated from a cluster of overlapping inversions including A1 arrangement.
A D-mannose-specific lectin from Gerardia savaglia that inhibits nucleocytoplasmic transport of mRNA.
1987
A new lectin has been isolated from the coral Gerardia savaglia by affinity chromatography, using locust gum as an absorbent, and D-mannose as eluant. Final purification was achieved by Bio-Gel P300 gel filtration. The agglutinin is a protein composed of two polypeptide chains with a Mr of 14800; the two subunits are not linked by disulfide bond(s). The isoelectric point is 4.8, the amino acid composition is rich in the acidic amino acids aspartic acid and glutamic acid. The absorption maximum for the protein was at 276 nm; with a molar absorption coefficient of 1.27 X 10(5) M-1 cm-1. The lectin precipitated erythrocytes from humans (A, B and O), sheep, rabbit and carp with a titer between …
Statics and Dynamics of a Glassy Crystal: A NMR- and Neutron Scattering Investigation of (NaCl) 0.35 (NaCN) 0.65
1987
The statics and the dynamics of the glass transition in (NaCl)0.35(NaCN)0.65 have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering and are directly compared to NMR results. Insight into the relaxation dynamics is gained via the temperature dependence of the transverse acoustic phonon modes and via the spin relaxation time T1. The statics of the system is reflected by the growth of a central peak and by the distribution of electric-field gradients. Both quantities are directly related to the glass order parameter. The temperature dependence of the order parameter provides experimental evidence that in NaCl:NaCN mixed crystals the glass transition is dominated by random fields rather than by…
Sepiapterin reductase in cultured human cells.
1987
Sepiapterin reductase, an enzyme involved in the synthesis of tetrahydrobiopterin (the natural cofactor for phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan hydroxylases), has been assayed in cultured human amniotic fibroblasts and in cultured mononuclear blood cells. In both cases, the Michaelis constants for sepiapterin and NADPH were essentially equal; 20 microM and 6 microM respectively for stimulated mononuclear blood cells and 22 microM and 5 microM respectively for amniotic fibroblasts. The inhibition by N-acetylserotonin was also similar in both cases. The concentration that produced 50% inhibition in stimulated mononuclear blood cells and in amniotic fibroblasts was 2 microM. The results str…

Cultured Ito cells of rat liver express the alpha 2-macroglobulin gene.
1987
Ito cells were isolated from rat liver and kept in culture for up to 13 days. The capability of the Ito cells to synthesize a2-macroglobulin was analyzed at different times after isolation and by pulse-chase experiments. Newly synthesized a2-macroglobulin was determined by immunoprecipitation followed by sodium dodecyl sulfate/ polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and fluorography. a2-Macroglobulin synthesis was hardly detectable in Ito cells and their media 3 days after plating. However, 5 - 11 days after the isolation of the cells, increasing amounts of a2-macroglobulin were synthesized. The results of pulse-chase experiments performed on day 7 showed that radioactively labeled a2-macroglob…
Myoadenylate deaminase deficiency
1987
Myoadenylate deaminase (MAD) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the purine nucleotide cycle which is biochemically linked to glycolysis and the citric cycle and thereby providing energy during intense muscular activity. In muscle fibers, myoadenylate deaminase operates at considerably higher activity levels than in other organs. First detected using enzyme-histochemical methods, it now appears that deficiency of myoadenylate deaminase is one of the most frequent enzyme defects in muscle. The primary defect may occur as an isolated nosological entity or not infrequently it is also associated with a large spectrum of different neuromuscular conditions. It seems to be the primary unassociated MAD …
Multipole strength distributions and form factors forE1,E2/E0, andE3 fromU238(e,e’f) coincidence experiments
1987
A model-independent multipole analysis of $^{238}\mathrm{U}$(e,e'f) coincidence data, taken at four momentum transfers (0.2\ensuremath{\le}${q}_{\mathrm{eff}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\le}}0.7}$ ${\mathrm{fm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$; \ensuremath{\omega}=4--22 MeV) yields both E1, E2/E0, and E3 form factors and strength distributions. The E2/E0 strength distribution in the fission channel shows two distinct bumps centered at \ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\simeq}10 and 14 MeV, exhausting up to 12 MeV (19\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2)% of the isoscalar E2 sum rule. The extracted form factors can be described within a hydrodynamical model by use of parameters ${c}_{\mathrm{tr}/{c}_{0}=1.2}$ and …
Photon-pion charge asymmetry in e+e− reactions: A laboratory for perturbative QCD phases
1987
Abstract The charge asymmetry in the production of a photon and a meson in e + e - annihilation is studied in perturbative QCD. This quantity measures the interference of amplitudes governed by different momentum scales. It is thus a powerful tool to probe strong interaction phases at high energy and in the context of Sudakov exponentiation and the chromo Coulomb phase. We find a null result at the lowest non-trivial order off α s in the entire kinematic region described by perturbative QCD.
Metabolic activation to a mutagen of 3-hydroxy-trans-7,8-dihydroxy-7,8-dihydrobenzo[a]pyrene, a secondary metabolite of benzo[a]pyrene
1987
3-Hydroxy-trans-7,8-dihydroxy-7,8-dihydrobenzo[a]pyrene (3-OH-BP-7,8-diol) was isolated from arylsulfatase/beta-glucuronidase-treated bile of rats to which 3-hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene (3-OH-BP) has been administered. This triol was investigated for mutagenicity in Salmonella typhimurium (reversion to histidine prototrophy of strains TA 97, TA 98, TA 100 and TA 1537) and in V79 Chinese hamster cells (acquisition of resistance to 6-thioguanine). When no exogenous metabolizing system was added the triol was inactive, while 3-OH-BP showed weak mutagenic effects with all four bacterial strains. In the presence of NADPH-fortified postmitochondrial supernatant fraction (S9 mix) of liver homogenate fro…
Production of T suppressor factor specific for the hapten picryl chloride requires both T suppressor cells and an antigen-specific, genetically restr…
1987
Summary We investigated the requirement for activation of T suppressor cells specific for the hapten picryl chloride and the release of hapten-specific T suppressor factor. Using an in vivo experimental system, we report that activation of T suppressor cells and the consequent release of T suppressor factor required two signals: one was provided by primed T suppressor cells, i.e. spleen cells from mice injected with the tolerogen picrylsulphonic acid, and the other was provided by the specific antigen in the context of H-2 gene products. Mechanisms by which the interaction between these two signals led to activation of T suppressor cells and the production of T suppressor factor, as well as…
Effects of alterations in sympathetic nervous activity on the severity of reperfusion-induced arrhythmias in anaesthetised rats.
1987
The effects of a number of interventions influencing sympathetic nervous activity on the severity of coronary artery reperfusion-induced arrhythmias in anaesthetised rats have been examined. Noradrenaline (0.1 microgram kg-1 min-1) reduced the mortality that usually occurred as a consequence of ventricular fibrillation. Isoprenaline (5 micrograms kg-1) did not significantly affect the severity of reperfusion-induced arrhythmias, although arrhythmias occurring during the 5-min period of ischaemia were exacerbated. The alpha-adrenoceptor antagonist nicergoline (0.25 and 0.5 mg kg-1 min-1) markedly suppressed both the ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation occurring upon release of the occlu…
Dependence of hepatic gluconeogenesis on PO2: inhibitory effects of halothane
1987
The dependence of gluconeogenesis and O2 uptake on PO2 in isolated rat hepatocytes is presented. Maintenance of steady-state PO2 was achieved with an oxystat system (Biochem. J. 236: 765–769, 1986). O2 uptake showed a half-maximal (K0.5) value of 0.5 Torr PO2, whereas the glucose synthesis rate was half-maximal at 1.2 Torr PO2. Halothane at concentrations greater than 1 mM exerted a parallel inhibition of O2 uptake and glucose synthesis at all PO2 levels studied. In contrast, at halothane concentrations less than 1 mM, inhibition of glucose synthesis occurred only at less than 20 Torr PO2. At these low concentrations, halothane was without significant effects on cellular O2 uptake. In isol…

Postoperative sonographische Verlaufsuntersuchungen von Hirntumoren im Kindesalter
1987
Postoperative neurosonography was performed in 69 babies and children after osteoclastic neurosurgery for primary cerebral tumors. Astrocytoma of the posterior fossa (26 cases) and medulloblastoma (25 cases) were frequent histological findings. Early postoperative bed-side examinations revealed reliably complications such as cerebral hemorrhage, edema or hygroma. Postoperative baseline studies were performed and reliability of sonographic criteria for tumor recurrence, such as high echogenicity and dense echotexture, were established. Regressive tissue changes under the usual postoperative cerebral radiation therapy and chemotherapy included transient increase in perifocal edema followed by…

Cellular mechanism of action of thyroid hormones.
1987
Abstract It has emerged in the last decade that the molecular mechanism of action of thyroid hormones resembles that of steroids; thyroid hormones indeed exert their effects mainly by directly regulating gene expression, on association with specific chromatin-bound receptors. Of the two thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) appears to be a sort of prohormone, whereas triiodothyronine (T3) seems to be the active form; in this respect, T4-deiodination, which occurs at the level of the target tissues, may be crucial in the local homeostasis of T3. Moreover, many cellular compartments, other than the nucleus, can bind thyroid hormone, and at least some of these further sites might play some role in …
Behandlung der ausgeprägten Pubertätsgynäkomastie mit Tamoxifen
1987
Based on the good results of another author 10 boys with marked pubertal gynecomastia were treated with the antioestrogen Tamoxifen (Nolvadex) at a dose of 20-40 mg/d orally for 2-12 months. In most cases the gynecomastia decreased totally, only two patients experienced palpable subareolar glandular tissue at the end of therapy. Side effects were not noted. During therapy levels of estradiol and testosteron increased, with a more pronounced elevation of estradiol. Basal values of LH and FSH remained nearly unchanged, but LH showed an increased response to LH-RH, which could be explained by the antioestrogenic effect of Tamoxifen at the hypothalamic level. The reduction of breast size in spi…
Model calculations of phase diagrams of magnetic alloys on the body-centered-cubic lattice.
1987
We treat a model for a binary (AB) alloy, where species A is magnetic (Ising spin σi = ± 1) while species B is not, and repulsive interactions are assumed between first and second neighbors of the same kind, in addition to a nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange interaction. Both the mean-field approximation, the cluster variation (CV) method in the tetrahedron approximation and the Monte Carlo (MC) method are applied; comparing the phase diagrams obtained by the various approximations their accuracy is tested. It is shown that the CV method is in rather close agreement with the MC method for the present problem.
Studies on metal-drug complexes. Crystal structure and characterization of μ-sulfato bromazepam copper(II) complex
1987
Abstract The compound Cu(Bromazepam) SO 4 having been synthesized, its crystal structure shows distorted octahedral environment for the Copper(II) ion. Because of the long Cu-O(4) length (2.90 A), we can consider that there is a semicoordinative interaction with the sulfate group acting as tridentate bridging ligand. The structure is a polymeric chain where dimeric units are linked by the oxygen (C-O(5)) atom of the Bromazepam carbonyl group. The drug consequently acts as a tridentate ligand in this compound. The magnetic results show a very weak antiferromagnetic interaction.
Endoscopic Microsurgery of Rectal Tumors
1987
Seventy-five patients with sessile adenomas or early carcinomas of the rectum or rectosigmoid were operated on with the new technique "transanal endoscopic microsurgery" Employing a newly developed complex endoscopic operating system, complete removal of sessile adenomas can be accomplished up to a distance of 25 cm from the anal verge, accurately and non-invasively. Complications occurred in three cases, with no resulting mortality. In the follow-up period we discovered only one adenomatous recurrence that required operative treatment. The superior accuracy of preparation, a short average stay in hospital, and low recurrence and complication rates are the advantages of this transanal endos…
Diagnosis of aortic dissection: the value of transesophageal echocardiography.
1987
Using the transesophageal approach the descending part of the aorta can be imaged by two-dimensional enchocardiography in cross sections comparable to computer tomograms. The value of combined transesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography was evaluated in 53 patients who were studied consecutively from 1983 to 1986 with symptoms of aortic dissection and compared with computed tomography, angiography, surgery and/or autopsy. In all patients the transthoracic aorta could be visualized and the dissection could be classified according to DeBakey: in 9 of 29 patients (34%) type I dissection, in 4 (14%) type II dissection and in 16 (55%) type III dissection was found. Operation was carried o…
Copper(II) complexes of 3-aminopropanols. Synthesis and structure of (3-aminopropanolato)formatocopper(II)
1987
Abstract The crystal and molecular structure of the title compound has been determined from single-crystal X-ray data and refined to a final R value of 0.030 for 971 reflections. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with two dimeric molecules in a cell of dimensions a=856.9(1), b= 887.7(1), c=837.0(1) pm and β=99.55(1)°. The blue crystals of Cu(ap)(HCOO) (ap=3-aminopropanolato ion) are made of centrosymmetric dialkoxy bridged dimers (Cu…Cu 296.4(1) pm). The dimers are polymerized along the c axis into chains via two NHO hydrogen bonds (Cu…Cu 547.9(1) pm). These chains are joined together along the b axis by CuOCOCu bridges and NHO hydrogen bonds (Cu…Cu 462.2(1) pm…
The effect of pre-stretch on mechanical efficiency of human skeletal muscle
1987
The mechanical efficiency of positive work was studied in six subjects performing three different types of exercises. On the first occasion the subjects ran on a motor-driven treadmill at 3.33 m s-1; the second and the third exercises consisted of performing rhythmical vertical jumps for 1 min both in rebound (RJ) and no-rebound (NRJ) conditions. The mechanical efficiency calculated in NRJ, which reflects only the conversion of biochemical energy into mechanical work, was found to be lower than the corresponding observation in RJ, 17.2 vs. 27.8% (P less than 0.001), respectively. These differences could not be explained by only the storage and recoil of elastic energy occurring in RJ compar…
