Reliability and validity of the Newcastle Scales in relation to ICD-9-classification

1987

The assessment of endogenous depression by means of the Newcastle Scales (1965, 1971) has been validated by their correlation with biological findings in many previous studies. However, reliability and cross validation studies are lacking for these scales. We found the reliability of the Newcastle Scales to be sufficient or at least moderate in a sample of 70 inpatients with major depression. In order to cross validate both scales, the clinical classification according to ICD-9 and the assessment of the Newcastle Scales have been performed independently in a sample of 112 inpatients with Major Depressive Disorder (RDC). The rate of agreement between clinical diagnosis and classification acc…

Separation of chitosomes and secretory vesicles from the ?slime? variant of Neurospora crassa

1987

Cells from the “slime” variant of Neurospora crassa were broken in isotonic conditions by use of triethanolamine buffer plus EDTA. After removal of large membranous structures by low-speed centrifugation, chitosomes and secretory vesicles were separated by means of gel filtration, precipitation of membranous contaminants with Concanavalin A, and centrifugation in sucrose or glycerol gradients. Polypeptidic composition of fractions enriched in secretory vesicles or chitosomes was found to be distinct. By these criteria we concluded that chitosomes and secretory vesicles represent different populations of microvesicles. Both microvesicular populations appeared free of endoplasmic reticulum an…

83. Radikalittsprinzipien bei der Operation des Coloncarcinoms

1987

Visually produced locomotion in an autokinetic setup.

1987

On individual ttials, 15 subjects stood G m before a minicomputer screen displaying a colon in a completely darkened room Subjects were aware that the light source wzs stationary. They were instructed to fixate the colon and to perform nonlocomotive jogging in place for 2 min. and continuously to report their sensations. Room lights were turned on after 30 sec., and subjects' deviations from their starting places were measured. All subjects had moved toward the light source (M = 4.42 m, SD = .43) although they were convinced that they had not moved. Instead, they had reported either the light source approached them or the light source became larger and/or more intense. On a second trial, su…

TheN-? transition form factor and anomalous?-decays into octet-decuplet baryon-antibaryon Pairs

1987

We develop a Generalized-Vector-Meson Dominance Model (GVDM) for the invariantN-Δ transition form factors which incorporates the correct largeq2 power behaviour of QCD and describes the available lowq2 space-like data. We then use this GVDM transition form factor in the time-like region to calculate theSU (3) singlet and octet contributions to Ψ-decays into octet-decuplet baryon-antibaryon pairs. The results are compared to recent data on Ψ-decays into octet-decuplet baryon-antibaryon pairs.

Cytoplasmic microvesicles in chromophobe cell renal carcinoma demonstrated by freeze fracture

1987

In the chromophobe cell type of renal carcinoma, cytoplasmic microvesicles (frequently with "inner vesicles") demonstrable by transmission electron microscopy are one of the most important diagnostic features. The present paper reports on these microvesicles in freeze fracture replicas. Their diameter is mainly between 140 and 300 micron, but smaller and very much larger vesicles may also occur. The vesicle membrane is devoid of, or contains only scanty intramembranous particles. Cytoplasmic invaginations, probably the precursors of "inner vesicles" can also be detected. Connections with the agranular endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria or other cell components could not be documented. Larg…

Stereoselective synthesis of C-glycosyl compounds via Michael addition of trimethylsilyl enol ethers and enamines to hex-1-enopyran-3-uloses

1987

Abstract The titanium(IV)-catalyzed addition of trimethylsilyl enol ethers to 2,4,6-tri- O -acylhex - 1 - enopyran - 3 - uloses ( 3 and 4 ) gave stereoselectively 3,6 - di - O - acyl - 4 - deoxy - β - d - glycero -hex-3-enopyranosyl-2-ulose derivatives. The formation of the C -glycosyl bond was accompanied by a 2→3 acyl shift, followed by the elimination of the 4-acyloxy substituent. Similarly, the reaction of 1-pyrrolidinocyclohexene with 3 and 4 also led stereoselectively to 2-(2,4,6-tri- O -acyl-β- d - ribo -hexopyranosyl)cyclohexanones. In this Michael addition, among the eight possible diastereomers, only one was formed. The high stereocontrol of both C -glycosyl compound syntheses is …

Effects of surface nonlinear interactions on the local critical behavior

1987

Effects of surface nonlinear interactions on the local critical behaviors are studied for an-component field in the semi-infinite space near the SB (surface-bulk) point by using renormalization group methods. The model Hamiltonian consists of a free (Gaussian) bulk part and a surface term containing aφ4 interaction. The interplay between the free bulk term and the nonlinear surface term gives rise to interesting behaviors of the local surface properties. Whereas the local susceptibility and correlation exponents retain their mean-field values, the surface crossover exponent ϕ is non-mean-field below three dimensions. To second order in e(e=3−d) we find:η‖ and\(\phi = \frac{1}{2} - \frac{{n …

Digoxin concentrations in serum and cantharides blister fluid: correlations with cardiac response.

1987

The relationship between the pharmacokinetics and dynamics of digoxin was investigated using a skin blistering technique that allows experimental access to tissue fluid concentrations. Eight healthy volunteers received digoxin, 1.0 mg, and placebo intravenously according to a double-blind crossover design. Drug concentrations were determined during a 72-hour period in serum, urine, and cantharides blister fluid (CBF). Digoxin levels in the hypothetic peripheral compartments were calculated from serum concentrations. Digoxin effects (total electromechanical systole [QS2c], left ventricular ejection time [LVETc], preejection period [PEPc], QTc time, heart rate, and T wave amplitude) were meas…

One-year follow-up of cardiac anxiety syndromes. Outcome and predictors of course.

1987

In a representative sample (n = 31) of patients with panic attacks and a cardiac anxiety syndrome, a prospective follow-up study after a 1-year interval was performed. At the follow-up assessment 33% of the patients were in remission, whereas the majority of patients had an unfavorable course. Avoidance behavior and female sexual status were found to be predictive for an unfavorable course. Within a matched-pair design controlled for age and sex, no difference between panic disorder with and without cardiac anxiety syndrome was observed in any psychosocial or psychopathological outcome variable. This result is an argument against the validity of the subtype cardiac anxiety syndrome.

Packings and stationary phases for biopolymer separations by HPLC

1987

Packings and stationary phases applied to high resolution separations of proteins, enzymes, and nucleic acids must satisfy a series of distinct criteria that are different from those usually required by HPLC of low molecular weight non-biologically active analytes. These requirements have been met through substantial improvements in classical gel media together with novel developments in silica supports, and have led to a family of products with tailor-made and reproducible properties. Supports consisting of cross-linked organic gels, and inorganic materials (mostly silicas) are now available with graduated particle sizes, pore sizes, porosities and surface areas as well as non-porous beads…

Effect of Practice, Mapping, Stimulus and Size on String Matching

1987

The same-different discrepancy on a matching task on which the subject had to determine the number of common elements (physically identical and appearing in the same position) between two strings of size 1 to 4 was investigated. Manipulated also were the type of presentation (fixed or varied sets), amount of practice (four blocks), and type of stimulus (letters, words). Reaction times for pure positive responses (all same at each level) were faster than negative responses (all different), confirming the usual discrepancy shown in previous studies. The discrepancy was smaller for well-learned sets (fixed sets) and for words, indicating the development of a comparison process based on global…

Intrathymic tolerance induction: determination of tolerance to class II major histocompatibility complex antigens in maturing T lymphocytes by a bone…

1987

Two new experimental approaches were established to analyse the influence of the thymus on tolerance induction to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigens: The aim of the first experiment was to perform successful transplantation of adult allogeneic thymus tissue into nude mice, an attempt that has been unsuccessful in the past. Tolerance for the MHC genotype of a prospective thymus graft recipient (A) was induced in mice of strain B by injection of (A X B) splenocytes during the neonatal period. Adult thymic tissue obtained from these allogeneic donors (B) were grafted into the nude mice of strain A. The allogeneic thymus was accepted by the nude mice and immunoreconstitution was ac…

Filipin labelling and intramembrane particles on the membranes of early and later autophagic vacuoles in Ehrlich ascites cells

1987

Cholesterol and intramembrane particle distribution on autophagic vacuole membranes was studied in Ehrlich ascites cells using filipin labelling and freeze-fracture electron microscopy. Unsaturated fatty acids were stained using imidazole-buffered osmium tetroxide. Autophagocytosis was induced with vinblastine, and early autophagic vacuoles were accumulated by lowering the ATP level in the cells with iodoacetate. Filipin labelling was observed in the limiting membranes of later, apparently hydrolase-containing autophagic vacuoles, whereas the most newly-formed, doublemembrane limited vacuoles were not labelled. The limiting membranes of late, residual body-type vacuoles either showed patchy…

Monoclonal antibodies to polysialic acid reveal epitope sharing between invasive pathogenic bacteria, differentiating cells and tumor cells

1987

Monoclonal antibodies (mAb) for rapid diagnosis and detection of invasive bacteria and identification of pathogenic factors in infectious disease are equally important in medical microbiology and clinical pathology and may even provide a breakthrough in basic medical and cell biology research. Such a situation evolved from the application of a unique mAb against the poorly immunogenic homopolymers of alpha 2,8-linked sialic acid of Escherichia coli K1 and meningococci group B capsules which could be derived from immune-hyperreactive NZB-autoimmune mice. The cross-reactivity of this mAb with identical polysialic acid (polySA) units of the neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM) revealed antige…

Zum Problem des prätherapeutischen Staging des Carcinoma Colli Uteri

1987

In a prospective study of 20 cases, the importance of nuclear magnetic resonance as a diagnostic tool in cervix carcinoma was investigated. The results were compared with those of the Computer tomography as well as with those of the clinical examinations. The histology served as "Standard". In the evaluation of the local tumor invasion the gynecological examination appeared to be the most important. The involvement of regional lymph nodes was detected more accurately by the NMR as compared to CT. The exact clinical staging was not achieved by either method; thus these new diagnostic methods do not alter the planning and the technique of the operation.

The ground-state deformation of98Sr

1987

The half-life of the first excited state (21+) of98Sr has been determined through the measurement of delayed γ-γ coincidences at the fission product separator OSTIS to t1/2=2.74(12) ns. This value is smaller than those obtained earlier from β− — conversion electron delayed coincidences and it indicates a stronger collectivity of the 21+→01+ transition in98Sr [B(E2)=98 (3) spu] than in100Sr [B(E2)=79(3) spu] which is normally assumed to be the better rotor.

Villin: a cytoskeletal protein and a differentiation marker expressed in some human adenocarcinomas.

1987

We studied the expression of villin, a microfilament-associated, actin-binding protein typical of brush-border microvilli, in a variety of human carcinomas by applying immunofluorescence microscopy to frozen sections and immunoblotting methods to tissue extracts using a rabbit antiserum and a monoclonal antibody specific for villin. All of the 24 primary and metastatic colorectal adenocarcinomas tested were uniformly and strongly positive for villin, with the immunocytochemical labeling concentrated at the luminal cell margin. In poorly differentiated tumor areas, rudimentary tubules were stained. All of the six tubular adenocarcinomas of the stomach studied as well as two adenocarcinomas o…

The application of porous silica layers in open tubular columns for liquid chromatography

1987

Two methods to realize a porous retentive silica layer on the inner wall of 10–25 µm fused silica capillaries for OTLC, etching and precipitation of silica from solution, have been investigated. Etching of the fused silica capillaries with 1M KOH, creates an activated surface, but the capacity of the silica layer is too small to serve as retentive layer in OTLC. Better prospects are offered by the precipitation of silica from a solution of polyethoxysiloxane, dynamically coated on the inner wall of the fused silica capillary. It appears to be possible to deposite a porous silica layer up to 0.8 µm thick (in a 25 µm capillary) by this method, which seems to be suitable for liquid-solid an dy…

Ellipsometric study of the physisorption of benzene on graphite

1987

The optical thickness of benzene on the (001) surface of a graphite single crystal has been studied by ellipsometry. Ellipsometric adsorption isotherms have been measured in the temperature range from 180 to 290 K. The maximum thickness of the adsorbed benzene film is constant in this temperature range and compares favourably with the value expected for one monolayer of molecules lying flat on the surface.

Functions of adolescent drinking in Finland and the Soviet Union

1987

The present study was conducted in Finland and the USSR (Estonia) with two birth cohorts (14 and 17 years old) and their parents. The subjects, 504 in Finland and 329 in Estonia, were drawn from urban and rural areas. 85% of the Estonian and 55% of the Finnish parents returned the questionnaire. The results supported the hypothesis that adolescent drinking is an age-related behaviour aimed at active coping efforts to adopt adult-like behaviour. In both countries abstinence decreased with age, and the use of alcohol was seen as behaviour which became acceptable at an older age than the age when the actual initiation occurred. However, the use of alcohol remained occasional through the ages o…

Cognitive skills and Finnish language inflection

1987

Covariation of cognitive processes and mastery of inflectional forms assessed by Berko's method were studied among 2.6–4.3-year-old children. The erroneous inflections produced by the children were analysed in order to discover rules underlying their morphological test responses. The use of the different rules was guided by the children's age and cognitive skills. The effects of contextual task factors varied at different mastery levels of the morphological test. The results indicate the need for concomitant analysis of the interaction between the child's existing level of morphology, cognitive skills and contextual variables of the tasks.

Teacher stress over an autumn term: relationships between subjective stress and catecholamine excretion during night rest

1987

The relationships between subjective stress and catecholamine excretion during night rest were investigated in a group of 137 teachers. The research design was longitudinal and consisted of repeated assessment (six times in an autumn term) of the stress indicators. At the beginning of the term adrenaline excretion rate showed negative and at the end of the term positive correlations with subjective stress feelings. Cluster analysis revealed three stable profile types among the teachers, in which the stress indicators were related to each other in different ways. The subjective stress process was better reflected in noradrenaline excretion than in adrenaline excretion. The findings were inte…

Noble-gas bubbles in metals: Molecular-dynamics simulations and positron states.

1987

A theoretical treatment of atomic structure and positron states in noble-gas bubbles in metals is presented. The Al-He and Cu-Kr systems are considered as specific examples. For large bubbles (radii above a few tens of angstroms) a calculational scheme is developed combining molecular-dynamics results for the metal--noble-gas interface with positron calculations. It is demonstrated that a positron is trapped at the surface of a noble-gas bubble, i.e., at the metal-gas interface. The annihilation rate with metal electrons is similar to that at a clean surface, while simultaneously there is a significant annihilation rate with gas-atom electrons. This enables relationships between the gas den…

A current source density analysis of field potentials evoked in slices of visual cortex

1987

The method of one-dimensional current source density (CSD) analysis was applied to field potentials recorded from 350 microns thick slices of the primary visual cortex of rats and cats. Field potentials were elicited by stimulation of the white matter and recorded along trajectories perpendicular to the cortical layers at spatial intervals of 25 to 50 microns. The resulting CSD distributions resembled closely those recorded from the cat visual cortex "in vivo". The responses with the shortest latency were distinct sinks in layers IV and VI probably reflecting monosynaptic EPSP's from specific thalamic afferents. From layer IV activity was relayed along three major routes: 1. to the supragra…
