Relationship between the seed rain and the establishment of vegetation in two areas abandoned after peat harvesting

1987

In this study the number and species composition of diaspores dispersing into two newly abandoned peat harvesting areas in Finland were investigated. In an area abandoned six years earlier a total of 2978 living seeds m−2, representing 18 species, was captured by using water-filled traps during two summers. In a one-year-old succession area the total number of living seeds m−2 was 2241, representing 16 plant species. The soil seed banks were found to be empty of viable seeds. In neither area there appeared to be any relation between number of dispersing seeds and of plant individuals of the same species in the pioneer vegetation. It is suggested that unfavourable conditions on the soil surf…

Effects of muscular exercise on erythrocyte adenosine triphosphate concentration in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

1987

Type I diabetes mellitus represents a metabolic disorder in which intracellular glycolytic pathway is inhibited by insulin deficiency, with the subsequent decreased availability of energetic substrates such as ATP. Some aspects of the energetic metabolism in response to an intensive demand (muscular exercise) were investigated, in a group of 10 ketotic diabetic patients, by measuring erythrocyte adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and blood glucose, free fatty acids (FFA) and lactate levels. In the diabetic subjects, in comparison with normal subjects, the decreased levels of erythrocyte ATP at rest did not increase after exercise, while the increased levels of FFA at rest did not diminish after e…

Effects of a preparation containing a standardized ginseng extract combined with trace elements and multivitamins against hepatotoxin-induced chronic…

1987

A preparation containing a standardized ginseng extract which has been shown to exert anti-hepatotoxic activity in vitro, combined with trace elements and multi-vitamins was compared to placebo in 24 elderly out-patients with toxin-induced (alcohol and drugs) chronic liver disease in order to evaluate its effect on liver function. Each patient was blindly treated either with the preparation containing ginseng extract or placebo for 12 weeks. The preparation containing ginseng extract significantly modified bromsulphthalein retention and blood zinc levels when compared to pre-treatment levels and to placebo. Serum bile acids, and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase before and after a fatty meal were …

Deuteron electrodisintegration near threshold with the Bonn potential

1987

Deuteron electrodisintegration near threshold is calculated for the Bonn potential including consistent meson exchange currents. Experimental data can fairly well be described over the whole q-range if GE is used as electromagnetic form factor for the exchange current, whereas F1 leads to a large overestimation at high q.

ChemInform Abstract: Modified Photobehavior of Carboxylic Acid Derivatives Induced by Protonation.

1987

Abstract A series of carboxylic acid derivatives 1–6 containing a second interacting function have been converted into the corresponding O -protonated species or acylium ions upon treatment with 96% sulfuric acid or oleum, respectively, at room temperature. The resulting stable cations have been spectroscopically characterized and submitted to irradiation. Cis-trans photoisomerization was observed in the ionic speciesderived from trans -crotonic, fumaric and maleic acids, and maleic anhydride. By contrast protonated crotonolactone 5a+ was found to be photostable. Finally, protonated α-bromobutyrolactone 6a+ was clean and efficiently dehydrohalogenated to 5a+ upon irradiation. Since the norm…

Electrical and photovoltaic properties of indium‐tin‐oxide/p‐InSe/Au solar cells

1987

Conditions for efficiency improvement and optimization in indium‐tin‐oxide/p‐indium‐selenide solar cells are discussed in this paper. This aim is achieved by using low‐resistivity p‐indium‐selenide and by incorporating a back‐surface‐field contact. This contact is insured by a p‐indium selenide/gold barrier whose rectifying behavior is explained through the complex impurity structure of p‐indium‐selenide. Electrical and photovoltaic properties of the cells are also reported. The efficiency parameters under AM1 simulated conditions have been improved up to 32 mA/cm2 for the short‐circuit current density, 0.58 V for the open‐circuit voltage, and 0.63 for the filling factor. As a result, solar…

Effect of unbalanced diets on incorporation of δ-aminolevulinic acid into cytochrome P-450

1987

Abstract The in vivo syntheses of two liver microsomal cytochromes P-450 PB 3a , P-450 UT 50 [(1987) Eur. J. Biochem., submitted] ( M r 50 000, 52 000) have been estimated by measuring the specific activity 2 h after i.p. administration of δ-[ 3 H]aminolevulinic acid to male Sprague Dawley rats. The animals were fed either a standard rat chow (5% lard, 22% casein) or unbalanced diets (high lipid, 30% lard or low protein, 6% casein) with or without 50 ppm Phenoclor DP6. The high-lipid diet supported a more rapid body weight gain but had little impact on cytochrome P-450 content, expressed either per whole liver or per mg microsomal protein, and on the incorporation of the precursor into cyto…

Nuclear spin and magnetic moment of 11Li

1987

Abstract Nuclear spin and magnetic moment of 11Li have been measured by optical pumping of a fast atomic beam. The angular asymmetry of the β-radiation from the polarized nuclei was used to detect the hfs of the 2s 2 S 1 2 −2 p 2 P 1 2 resonance line and the NMR signal cubic LiF crystal lattice. The results I= 3 2 and μI=3.6673(25) n.m. indicate a pure 1p 3 2 state of the valence proton.

A simple model to estimate the daily value of the regional maximum evapotranspiration from satellite temperature and albedo images

1987

Abstract We have tried an adaptation of the radiation model proposed by FAO, applicable in any area, for the estimation of the regional maximum evapotranspiration, ET, from temperature and albedo images obtained from a satellite. This model is based on the relationships ETm = k cETo ETo = A + BR g + CR g Ta max where k c is the crop coefficient, ETo is the maximum evapotranspiration of the reference crop (green grass), Rg is the global radiation obtained from satellite albedo images, T a max is the maximum temperature of the air obtained from the near-midday satellite temperature and A, B and C are the empirical coefficients characteristic of each zone calculated for different intervals of …

Effects of Rapid Weight Reduction on Force Production and Vertical Jumping Height

1987

The effects of three weight reduction methods on maximal strength, rate of force development, vertical jumping height, and mechanical power were studied in track and field athletes and volleyball players. The three methods were sauna, diet with diuretic, and diuretic alone. The reductions in weight achieved were 3.4%, 5.8%, and 3.8% of body weight after sauna, diet + diuretic, and diuretic, respectively (P less than 0.001). Maximal isometric leg strength and the rate of isometric force development were decreased after the sauna and diet + diuretic treatments. Dehydration caused by the diuretic method alone did not impair neuromuscular performances. As had been expected from theoretical calc…

Synthesis and spectral studies ofN-2-pyridinylcarbonyl-2-pyridinecarxoximidate copper(II) complexes

1987

Dimeric and polymeric copper(II) complexes containing BPCA (N-2-pyridinylcarbonyl-2-pyridinecarboximidate), having general formulae Cu(BPCA)X·nH2O (X=Cl, Br, NCS, NCO, N3, or CN) and Cu2(BPCA)2-X·nH2O [X=oxalate anion (OX), chloranilate anion (CA) or the dianion of 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (DHBQ)] have been synthesized by the copper(II)-assisted hydrolysis of 2, 4, 6-tris(2-pyridyl)-1, 3, 5-triazine. Spectroscopic results indicate five-coordinate, approximately square-pyramidal, geometry around the copper(II) ion. Half-field absorption in the ΔMs=±2 region of the X-band e.p.r. powder spectra has been observed for the dimeric species.

Characterization of a T cell-derived lymphokine that acts synergistically with IL 3 on the growth of murine mast cells and is identical with IL4

1987

Abstract A mast cell-like cell line (SN-1) was established with the aid of growth factor(s) present in the supernatant of a Con A-stimulated L3T4 + T cell line. In analogy to other mast cell lines, IL 3 was identified as a growth factor for SN-1 cells. In addition, a second lymphokine produced by the T cells synergistically enhanced the IL 3-induced growth. This factor, originally termed mast cell growth enhancing factor (MaGEF), could be separated from IL 2, IL 3, a CSF-like activity and was purified to homogeneity. The N-terminal amino acid sequence (8 residues) and the functional properties of this lymphokine proved to be identical with those reported for BSF-1 (IL 4). Unless applied at …

Radioactively labelled epoxides. part V. Tritium labelled K-region oxides and trans-dihydrodiols of pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene and dibenz[a, h]anthracene

1987

Tritium labelled K-region oxides of pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene and dibenz[a,h]anthracene have been prepared by cyclization of the corresponding trans-dihydrodiols which were obtained by reduction of K-region quinones with sodium borotritide in the presence of oxygen. This synthetic pathway not only yields two metabolically important radioactively labelled derivatives of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a simple and efficient manner, but also requires a rather inexpensive source of tritium.

Amorphous semiconductor-electrolyte junction

1987

Abstract The photoelectrochemical behaviour of amorphous anodic films on niobium (a-Nb 2 O 5 ) grown in a wide range of thicknesses (20 ⩽ d ox ⩽ 25 nm) is presented. The influence of the wavelength, light intensity and film thickness on the photocharacteristics of the a-Nb 2 O 5 /electrolyte junction is investigated. Expressions for the photocurrent curves under steady-state conditions are derived by assuming a variable efficiency of photocarrier generation and different distributions of the electrical potential inside the amorphous films. The influence of the light intensity on the photocharacteristics and the existence of a sub-band-gap photoresponse are explained by assuming a finite den…

Reversion of 7-methylguanosine 5′-phosphate inhibition of mRNA translation by polysomal and soluble factors isolated from Saccharomyces cerevisiae

1987

Abstract Protein fractions that overcome m7GMP inhibition of mRNA translation have been purified from the yeast S. cerevisiae . An active fraction isolated from polysomes contains two polypeptides of 220- and 190-kDa. The active fraction isolated from postribosomal supernatant contains a major polypeptide of 28-kDa and other species of 32-, 24-, 22- and 21-kDa, and sediments in sucrose gradients as a high molecular weight complex of about 200000. This fraction restored yeast mRNA translation in reticulocyte lysates under conditions of yeast and globin mRNA competition; however, this effect was not observed with the 220- and 190-kDa polypeptides from polysomes. Nevertheless, translation of y…

13C spin-lattice relaxation study of chlorinated alkanes

1987

The spin-lattice relaxation of ten polychloroalkanes (ethanes to pentanes) have been studied both neat and in a 50% solution in CDCl3. The T1 values for the CH2, CH2Cl and CHCl2 carbons decrease with increasing molecular weight in accordance with a dipolar-dominated mechanism, whereas those of the CCl3 carbons showed no dependence on molecular weight. In chloropentanes, with chlorine substitution at one end only, the frequency of segmental motion begins to compete with that of overall tumbling of the molecule. Consequently, the T1 minimum is shifted from the middle towards the heavier end of the molecule, and also a relatively large T1 for the terminal methyl is observed. It was also demons…

Analysis of liver-specific protein LSP using murine monoclonal antibodies.

1987

. We describe twenty murine monoclonal antibodies directed against different antigenic determinants of human and rabbit liver-specific protein LSP. Among them, nine were directed against liver-specific epitopes as judged from immunohistological studies. Immunoelectronmicroscopy revealed that seven of these monoclonals recognized membrane determinants differing in staining of distinct areas of the hepatocellular surface. Eleven antibodies were directed against intracellular structures. Western blot analysis showed that the epitopes detected were displayed on either single or multiple protein bands with apparent molecular weights between 24 000 and 60 000. Further differences were observed wi…

Kinetics of the permanganate oxidation of formic acid in aqueous solution

1987

The kinetics of the permanganate oxidation of formic acid in aqueous perchloric acid at 30°C were examined by the spectrophotometric method. The chemical reaction 2MnO + 3HCOOH + 2H+ 2MnO2 + 3CO2 + 4H2O, appears to proceed via several parallel reactions. The overall rate equation has been obtained by using statistical multilinear regression analysis of the 660 cases studied, and the presence in the rate equation of two new terms in relation to previous studies shows that both permanganate autocatalytic effects and acid media inhibition must be taken into account when the reaction proceeds at constant ionic strength.

An automatic test for frequency discrimination

1987

Békésy audiometry has been applied to the determination of the frequency discrimination threshold. The automatic test for frequency discrimination is performed by means of a modified automatic audiometer at fixed frequencies, each administered for a duration of 60 s. The test involves the stimulus of a series of pairs of tone bursts of 500 ms duration: the frequency of one of the tone bursts (f0) is constant, while the other (f0 + delta f) gradually increases and decreases according to the subject's response. The tracings obtained facilitate the evaluation of the discrimination capability of the subject. The pattern obtained from a sample of normally hearing people was analysed in order to …

PRENATAL DIAGNOSIS OF X-LINKED SEVERE COMBINED IMMUNODEFICIENCY (SCID) BY FLOWCYTOMETRIC INVESTIGATION OF FETAL BLOOD

1987

Prenatal diagnosis of SCID has until now been limited due to the inability of obtaining sufficient fetal blood volumes for immunological investigation. - We report the diagnosis of x-linked SCID at 19 weeks of gestation by using 200μl fetal blood for flowcytometrio evaluation. Amniocentesis was performed in the 17th week of pregnancy on a 36 year old woman with positive family history for X-linked SCID. chromosome analysis revealed a normal male caryotype. To confirm the suspected diagnosis of SCID a fetal blood sample was taken by puncturing the umbilical cord vein under sonographic control at 19 weeks of gestation. 300μl were used to perform chromosome analysis, the remaining 200μl were p…

X-ray scattering experiments on oriented polysiloxanes with paired mesogens and different distances between these swallow-tailed side groups show a remarkable dependence of the smectic monolayer thickness on the degree of dilution, whereas the interplanar distance of the side groups remain nearly constant. Due to the dominating interaction of the mesogenic moieties, the flexible main chain is forced to take part in the layer formation. A packing model is proposed to explain the results of the X-ray studies. For polymers with five or more dimethylsiloxane copolymer segments, a diffuse scattering appears in the smectic as well as in the isotropic phase. This scattering is independent of the o…

Electromagnetic energy within dielectric spheres

1987

We present exact and approximate analytic expressions for the time-averaged electromagnetic energy within dielectric spheres on the basis of rigorous Mie theory. Such information is of importance for the study of photochemical reactions within atmospheric water spheres. Numerical results show that on the average the energy inside a cloud droplet is enlarged by a factor exceeding 2 compared with that of a sphere of the same radius of the surrounding medium. In regions of resonance peaks the electromagnetic energy may be increased by more than 2 orders of magnitude.

A CI study of the CuCO and CuCO+ complexes

1987

MO CI calculations are carried out using an optimal space of valence virtual MOs obtained by means of a projection technique, as a linear combination of the AOs which are more occupied in the molecular Fock space. Localization of the occupied MOs and nonvalence virtual MOs is also achieved. The overall procedure is proven to be quite advantageous and well suited to obtain potential energy curves which keep the same physical meaning along the range of distances studied. Using a slightly better than double‐zeta quality basis set, a valence CAS‐CI, and selected CI wave function by the CIPSI algorithm have revealed a possible weak van der Waals interaction for the 2Σ+ state of CuCO, which remai…

Cholinergic modulation of the release of 5-hydroxytryptamine from the guinea pig ileum.

1987

Isolated segments of the guinea pig ileum were vascularly perfused and the release of 5-HT and its metabolite 5-HIAA into the portal venous effluent determined by HPLC with electrochemical detection. Test substances were applied via the arterial perfusion medium. Oxotremorine inhibited concentration-dependently the release of 5-HT and 5-HIAA (by 47% at 1 mumol/l). Scopolamine (0.1 mumol/l) did not affect the release of 5-HT and 5-HIAA, but antagonized the effect of oxotremorine. In the presence of TTX (1 mumol/l), oxotremorine (1 mumol/l) increased the release of 5-HT by 150% and that of 5-HIAA by 220%. This increase was completely blocked by scopolamine. General remarks on the role of the vestibular system in weightlessness

1987

Different methods are described to experimentally achieve weightlessness. Since the function of the otolith system depends on the presence of contact forces opposing gravity, it is disabled in weightlessness and may send misleading positional information to the brain. Without the contributions of the otolith system it is difficult in space to distinguish self-motion from object motion. Furthermore, the disintegration of information from the neck position receptors from those of the otolith system can lead to additional illusory positional sensations. Since the function of the semicircular canal system in previous space flights was found to be essentially undisturbed, the vestibular experime…

Formation of a new cell wall by protoplasts of Candida albicans: effect of papulacandin B, tunicamycin and Nikkomycin.

1987

SUMMARY: Incorporation of polysaccharides into the walls of regenerating protoplasts of Candida albicans was followed in the presence of papulacandin B, tunicamycin and nikkomycin. With the first drug, chitin was incorporated normally whereas incorporation of glucans and mannoproteins was significantly decreased. Tunicamycin decreased incorporation of all wall polymers when added at the beginning of the regeneration process but blocked only mannan and alkali-insoluble glucan incorporation when added after 5 h. Nikkomycin inhibited chitin synthesis, and the walls formed by the protoplasts were enriched in alkali-soluble glucan. Pulse-chase experiments suggested that a precursor-product relat…
