The dielectric relaxation properties of a combined main-chain/side-chain liquid-crystalline polymer were investigated. It was found that the rotation of the side chain about the main chain (δ-process) is not as strongly restricted as in side-chain liquid-crystalline polymers. This is attributed to the facts that the side chain is attached to the flexible spacer within the chain backbone and that the concentration of the side chains is comparatively small. Two low-temperature relaxation processes were observed to occur in the glassy smectic and the crystalline state. They are attributed to intramolecular motions with in the mesogenic groups.

Explicit expressions for Sturm-Liouville operator problems

1987

Throughout this paper H will denote a complex separable Hilbert space and L(H) denotes the algebra of all bounded linear operators on H. If T lies in L(H), its spectrum σ(T) is the set of all complex numbers z such zI–T is not invertible in L(H) and its compression spectrum σcomp(T) is the set of all complex numbers z such that the range (zI-T)(H) is not dense in H ([3, p. 240]). This paper is concerned with the Sturm–Liouville operator problemwhere λ is a complex parameter and X(t), Q, Ei, Fi for i = l,2, and t∈[0,a], are bounded operators in L(H). For the scalar case, the classical Sturm-Liouville theory yields a complete solution of the problem, see [4], and [7]. For the finite-dimension…

Experimental analysis of weak mixing angles between three or four quark generations

1987

New data on weak quark decays and on weak heavy quark production are used to obtain the allowed ranges of elements of the quark mixing matrix for three or four generations of sequential quarks. The analysis yields allowed ranges for the three mixing angles in the six-quark case and for the six mixing angles in the eight-quark case.

Transport-related amino acid metabolism in germinating barley grains

1987

When eight [14C]-labelled amino acids were separately injected into the endosperm of germinating (4 days at 20°C) barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Himalaya) grains, the label was rapidly taken up by the scutellum and further transported to the shoot and roots. Some of the amino acids (leucine, lysine and asparagine) were transported in an intact form through the scutellum to the seedling, whilst glutamic acid and aspartic acid were largely converted to glutamine in the scutellum. Proline was mainly transported unchanged, but a small part of the label appeared in glutamine. Arginine was mostly broken down in the scutellum, possibly providing ammonia for the synthesis of glutamine. During furth…

Balance of T1-weighted images before and after application of a paramagnetic substance (Gd-DTPA)

1987

Ten patients with encephalitis disseminata and 10 patients with cerebral ischemia underwent computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging examinations. The results before and after the application of contrast media were compared. It is shown that T1-weighted MRI images, even after application of gadolinium-DTPA, are of little value for differential diagnosis of these diseases. In contrast, T2-weighted images did support the diagnosis of an acute stage of encephalitis disseminata versus acute ischemia. This was also true for lesions that had not been adequately depicted by computed tomography.

Differential Translational Efficiency of the mRNAs Isolated from Derepressed and Glucose Repressed Saccharomyces cerevisiae

1987

Summary: Carbon catabolite derepression induced changes in the pool of yeast mRNAs translatable in a protein-synthesizing reticulocyte system. Competition experiments with globin mRNA showed that the mRNA population obtained from derepressed cells possessed a higher translational efficiency than mRNA from repressed cells. The mRNAs that could account for the high translational efficiency of the derepressed mRNA were not detected in cells growing in glucose-rich medium. Analysis of protein synthesis in the presence of 7-methylguanosine 5′-phosphate indicated that the initiation factors recognizing the 5′-terminal structure of capped messengers interacted with lower affinity with the represse…

Spin dependence of low energy charge exchange between H 2 + and Na

1987

The difference in charge exchange rate in collisions between spin oriented sodium atoms and H 2 + ions has been measured at an energy of about 1 eV. H 2 + was stored in a Penning trap and polarized by spin exchange with Na beam atoms from a hexapole magnet. The ion loss from the trap due to charge exchange was different as we depolarized the atomic beam. From the data we obtain a ratio of cross sections for singlet and triplet collisionsQ 1/Q 3=1.5±0.2 andQ 3=1.2·10−15 cm2.

Electrophysiological characterization of the pineal gland of golden hamsters.

1987

In one of the most-widely used species in pineal gland research, the strongly photoperiodic golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus, no electrophysiological data on pinealocytes are currently available. To fill this gap, in the present study 185 spontaneously active pinealocytes from male golden hamsters were recorded extracellularly, both during day- and night-time (light: dark cycle 12 ∶ 12, lights on at 07.00 h). As in other species, pinealocytes exhibited action potentials of 1–2 ms duration. An irregular firing pattern was observed in 95% of the pinealocytes, the remainder fired more regularly or showed a phasic discharge pattern. The firing frequencies ranged from 0.2 to 25 Hz and showed…

Presynaptic effects of scopolamine, oxotremorine, noradrenaline and morphine on [3H] acetylcholine release from the myenteric plexus at different sti…

1987

The inhibition by three modulators (oxotremorine, noradrenaline, morphine) of acetylcholine release from the myenteric plexus preincubated with [3H]choline was investigated at different stimulation frequencies and calcium concentrations. Moreover, [3H]acetylcholine release evoked by a low (0.1 Hz) or a high (10 Hz) stimulation rate was investigated at different calcium concentrations either in the absence or presence of scopolamine. A reduced calcium concentration (0.6 mmol/l) inhibited acetylcholine release more at 0.1 Hz (74% +/- 3%) than at 10 Hz (44% +/- 8%). Scopolamine enhanced the stimulated acetylcholine release at a calcium concentration of 1.8 mmol/l. At calcium concentrations hig…

Abstract The three compounds Ph4Sn2(X3CCO2)2 were synthesized from Ph2SnH2 and X3CCOOH (X = H, Cl) or by cleavage of two phenyl groups in Ph6Sn2 with Stoichiometric amounts of X3CCOOH (X = Cl, F). The crystal structures (R = 0.041, 0.030, 0.058) show that the Ph4Sn2 units are bridged by two isobidentate acetates resulting in five-coordinated tin atoms. Evaluation of advanced silica packings for the separation of biopolymers by high-perforamnce liquid chromatography

1987

Non-porous monodisperse 1.5-μm silicas were allowed to react with (A) and (B) N-acetylaminopropyltriethoxysilane to generate bonded phases useful in high-performance hydrophobic-interaction chromatography (HIC). Differences in the selectivity were observed between he amide and the ether phase. Peak capacities between 10 and 30 were achieved for several proteins with the amide and ether phase packed into columns of 36 × 8 mm I.D. and elution of the proteins under chromatographic conditions in which the gradient volume, VG, was held constant by varying the gradient time between 20 and 2.5 min and the flow-rate between 0.5 and 4.0 ml/min. Muscarine receptors on the rat phrenic nerve, evidence for positive and negative muscarinic feedback mechanisms.

1987

Neuronal transmitter stores of the rat phrenic nerve were labelled by incubation with [3H]choline. Release of [3H]acetylcholine was elicited by electrical nerve stimulation (100 or 1500 pulses, 5 or 25 Hz) or by high potassium (27 mmol/l) and the effects of the muscarine receptor agonist oxotremorine and the antagonist scopolamine were investigated. Neither oxotremorine nor scopolamine affected the basal tritium efflux. A low concentration of oxotremorine (10 nmol/l) enhanced and a high concentration of oxotremorine (1 μol/l) reduced the electrically evoked [3H]acetylcholine release. Likewise, the high potassium-evoked [3H]acetylcholine release was reduced by a high concentration of oxotrem…

Tumorspecific Antigens in Human Renal Cell Carcinoma: Ultrastructural Localization of the Antigen by Immune-Electron-Microscopy

1987

In clinical oncology, tumor markers are a valuable tool in therapy monitoring of tumor patients as well as for primary diagnosis. In renal cell carcinoma a number of tumor associated antigens were described which may also be expressed in normal kidney epithelium (Bander et al. 1983; Bander 1984; Moon et al. 1982; Oosterwijk et al. 1987a, b; Ueda 1981). Only occasionally are antigens described which do not react in normal kidney tissue. The here described antigen is restricted to well differentiated human renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and does not show any expression in the normal kidney or other human organs (Table 1). The antibodies produced by hybridoma-technology are highly specific for the…

The effect of dietary imbalances on the activation of benzo[a]pyrene by the metabolizing enzymes from rat liver.

1987

Abstract Male Sprague-Dawley rats (70–80 g) were fed ad libitum a standard control diet (22% casein, 5% lard), or a high lipid diet (30% lard) or a low protein diet (6% casein) or a standard diet containing 50 ppm phenoclor DP6. After 6 weeks on these diets, the cytochrome P-450 microsomal content, the benzo[ a ]pyrene monooxygenase (BaP-MO) and the epoxide hydrolase (EH) were assayed. The formation of mutagenic B(a)P metabolites which covalently bind with DNA was compared. The activity of BaP-MO and of EH were increased by the high lipid diet (+27% and 106% respectively) and by the phenoclor DP6 treatment (+63% and 400% respectively), compared to the standard diet. In animals fed a low pro…

Influence of hydrocortisone on chick embryo retina development

1987

Treatment of chick embryos in ovo with hydrocortisone-21-phosphate (a single dose of 150 micrograms) caused a marked reduction of retinal thymidine kinase activity 24 h later. The inhibitory effect was highest (65-70%) in 8-10-day-old embryos and declined with age, disappearing after day 15. It was accompanied by a reduction in thickness of the retinal layers. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) treatment (10 micrograms daily for 2 days) also produced an age-dependent inhibitory effect on retinal thymidine kinase, whereas treatment with a single dose of 200 micrograms of metopirone, a compound that prevents the 11 beta-hydroxylation of steroid molecules in the adrenal glands, impeded the dec…

Characterization of rodent pineal astrocytes by immunofluorescence microscopy using a monoclonal antibody (J1-31).

1987

In previous studies pineal astrocytes have been characterized immunohistochemically mainly by use of antisera to glial fibrillary acidic protein. Because of the recent demonstration of this protein in non-astrocytic cells the question of its specificity as an astrocytic marker has been raised. A possible alternative tool for characterizing pineal astrocytes is the J1-31 monoclonal antibody, which is directed against a 30 000 dalton astrocytic protein clearly distinguishable from glial fibrillary acidic protein. Immunofluorescence microscopy of this antibody in the pineal gland of rat and guinea-pig revealed a staining pattern similar to that obtained by glial acidic fibrillary protein antis…

Ultrastructural evidence of collagenolytic activity in ductal infiltrating carcinoma of the human breast

1987

The stroma of ductal infiltrating carcinoma of the human breast shows characteristic and localized areas of collagen rarefaction and fragmentation. This finding has been correlated with a peculiar type of fibrillar damage, observed in a small percentage of collagen fibrils isolated in the native state from the tumour stroma. The same pattern of lesion has been reproduced in vitro by human collagenase digestion on reconstituted fibrils. No effect has been detected by other nonspecific proteases in the same system.

1987

In order to investigate the pharmacological screening of a number of pyran-4-ones their synthesis by cyclization with sulphuric acid of the corresponding 1,3,5-triketones has been carried out with high yields. In the course of preparation of the latter the reaction of 2-acetyltetralone with some esters of benzoic acid derivatives has been studied and in particular, for a number of them, an interesting nucleophilic substitution of a chlorine atom with an alkoxy group on a benzenic nucleus has been evidenced.

Ni61Mössbauer study of the hyperfine magnetic field near the Ni surface

1987

$^{61}\mathrm{Ni}$ M\"ossbauer measurements have been performed at 4.2 K on spherical Ni particles covered with a protective layer of SiO, with average diameter of 500 and 50 \AA{}. The hyperfine magnetic field at $^{61}\mathrm{Ni}$ nuclei for 500-\AA{} particles has been found to be 78.3(4) kOe, compared with the field for Ni foil of 75.0(2) kOe. The small difference is due to the demagnetization and dipolar fields in 500-\AA{} particles. The spectrum of 50-\AA{} particles has a surface component with the corresponding value of the hyperfine magnetic field of 40.3(5.4) kOe. This strongly indicates that, in accordance with recent theoretical studies, there is a decrease of the hyperfine mag…

11-cis retinaldehyde binding analysis was performed on a bovine retinal pigment epithelium preparation of cellular retinaldehyde binding protein (CRALBP), whose purity degree was estimated as 75%. Equilibrium binding studies were carried out measuring the replacement of tritium-labeled with unlabeled 11-cis retinaldehyde at 25 degrees C. Analysis of the experimental data both by a direct curve-fitting procedure utilizing a non linear least square regression analysis and by a conventional Scatchard plot revealed a single non-interacting binding site with an apparent equilibrium constant of 0.9 X 10(-7) M. Effects of aging and life-long physical training on collagen in slow and fast skeletal muscle in rats. A morphometric and immuno-histochemical study.

1987

Intramuscular collagen in a slow (m. soleus) and a fast (m. rectus femoris) skeletal muscle was studied by biochemical, morphometric, and immunohistochemical methods. Wistar white rats of 1, 4, 10, and 24 months were used as experimental animals. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of life-long physical training (treadmill running, 5 days a week for 1, 3, 9, and 23 months depending on the age attained). The biochemical concentration of collagen was higher in m. soleus than in m. rectus femoris and it increased in youth and in old age in m. soleus. The trained rats had higher concentrations of collagen than the untrained rats at 10 and 24 months. The morphometrically measured area-fractions …

Serotyping and genotyping of encapsulated Escherichia coli K1 sepsis isolates with a monoclonal IgG anti K1 antibody and K1 gene probes

1987

Among infectious diseases caused by E. coli the capsular type K1 plays a predominant role. E. coli K1 isolates account for 80% of cases of E. coli neonatal meningitis and 30% of E. coli sepsis strains. Serotyping of K1 strains has conventionally relied upon the use of K1-specific bacteriophages or serum agar methods with polyvalent anti K1 serum. In the study present here, 187 E. coli sepsis isolates have been analysed for production of the K1 antigen using K1 phages, K1 serum agar plates and Latex agglutination and ELISA using an IgG2a anti K1 monoclonal antibody. In total, 33 sepsis isolates (about 18%) were identified as K1 positive, with three of these strains proving negative in all te…

Effects of age and life-time physical training on fibre composition of slow and fast skeletal muscle in rats.

1987

The effects of age and endurance training on muscle fibre characteristics were studied in a slow (m. soleus, MS) and in a fast (m. rectus femoris, MRF) skeletal muscle. Wistar rats at ages of 1, 2, 4, 10, and 24 months were used as experimental animals. The trained rats were put to run on a motor-driven treadmill 5 d/wk beginning from the age of 1 month. The body weights of the animals increased continuously throughout their lives. The muscle weights increased up to the age of 10 months, after which they tended to decrease. The trained adult rats had lower body weights as well as lower muscle weights than the untrained adult rats. The amount of the intramuscular lipid decreased with age, es…

At 0.5 Hz (100 pulses) TC failed to modulate the evoked acetylcholine release. A slight (30%) inhibition was observed at 1 Hz (100 pulses). Release of acetylcholine evoked at 5, 25 and 50 Hz (100 pulses) or 100 Hz (200 pulses) was markedly reduced by TC. The degree of inhibition (60%) was similar between 5 Hz and 100 Hz. A concentration of 1 mumol/l TC was a maximal effective concentration at 5 Hz whilst at all higher stimulation frequencies a 10-fold higher concentration was ne…
