Magnetic resonance imaging of postrepair-myelomeningocele — findings in 31 children and adolescents

Magnetic resonance imaging has clearly demonstrated its efficacy in the diagnosis of pathological processes in the C.N.S. We examined 31 children who had undergone plastic closure of myelomeningocele a few days post partum. We could show that a high percentage of the patients (89%) presented the pathological anatomy of a tethered spinal cord; clinical symptoms of the tethered spinal cord syndrome, i.e. progressive neurological symptoms, however, are rarely observed. Possible revision of neurosurgical treatment of MMC is discussed.

Previous studies have shown that the "synaptic" bodies of mammalian pinealocytes are a heterogeneous group of organelles. Whereas "synaptic" ribbons (SR) exhibit a day/night rhythm with small numbers during daytime and high numbers at night, the so-called "synaptic" spherules (SS) show species-specific differences in their rhythmicity. In the present study the numbers of SR and SS were monitored in male guinea pigs over a full 24-h period at 4-hourly intervals (LD 12:12, lights on at 7:00). The production of replacement queens in experimentally orphaned colonies was investigated in the neotropical termiteNasutitermes coxipoensis holmgren. A single adultoid replacement queen was produced with six weeks in more than 50% of the nests. The new queen begins oviposition extremely quickly. Replacement kings are seldom seen but must be present since brood in the nest in atribuable to the replacement queen. InN. coxipoensis, replacement adultoid queens and kings seem to develop preferentially from the few aged nymphs which are present in the nest throughout the year.

Suppression of humoral antibody formation against sheep red blood cells by infections with HSV-2 and the influence of mouse cytomegalovirus

HSV-2 infections suppress the antibody response to HSV-1 but do not impair the mouse cytomegalo virus (MCMV) antibody generating system. In contrast, the sheep red blood cell (SRBC) IgM response is impaired by preinfections with HSV-2 but not with HSV-1. From the time kinetics of this suppression it can be concluded that only a certain submechanism "spills over" to the SRBC system. MCMV suppresses the antibody formation induced by HSV-1.

Biologic effects of ultrasound on liver cells of rat embryos.

Experiments on the biologic effects of ultrasound (US) were carried out on rat embryos exposed for 120 s to a US beam showing features similar to those already employed for diagnostic purposes. Electron microscopic investigation of the liver parenchyma of rat embryos confirmed results obtained from adult guinea pigs with the same duration of exposure, i.e. diffuse vacuolization of cytoplasma and varying degrees of mitochondrial damage.

Experimental determination of the ortho-positronium lifetime in vacuum

Moderated positrons from a22Na source form positronium atoms at the surface of a channel plate multiplier in a weak magnetic field. They decay inside a finite volume and the decay quanta are registered by ten plastic scintillation detectors and counted in a fast data acquisition system with zero deadtime. After corrections for the escape of atoms from the observation volume and for prompt annihilation back-ground we obtain a lifetime of (142.22±0.14) ns. This is in fair agreement with the theoretical value of 142.07 ns but larger than previous experimental determinations. A possible correction from annihilation at the walls of the decay chamber would further increase the lifetime.

Synthesis and some reactions of linear poly(iminohexamethylene)

By complete reduction of polyamide-6, poly(iminohexamethylene) (PIH) was obtained. This new linear polyamine was characterized by i.r. and by n.m.r. spectroscopy as well as by titration. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements and X-ray diffraction found a high degree of crystallinity whose extent strongly depends upon the pre-treatment. The polyammonium salts that form with inorganic and organic acids show the typical polyelectrolyte effect in viscometry. PIH was alkylated with methyl iodide or acrylic acid and was acylated with N-BOC-l-α-amino acids or N-BOC-ω-amino-alkylenecarboxylic acids. The properties of these derivatives are described.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY)-like immunoreactivity is present in the rodent pineal gland. To elucidate possible effects on pineal melatonin synthesis NPY (5 nmol/kg body wt.) was injected into the common carotid artery of male rats. Activities of the melatonin biosynthetic enzymes, serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT) were determined by means of radioenzymatic methods. The respiratory stimulant properties of iv injections of 33, 67, and 100 micrograms synthetic human corticotropin-releasing hormone (hCRH) were studied in 12 normal men in a single blind, placebo-controlled trial. All doses of hCRH induced a respiratory stimulation in every subject, and the stimulation was dose dependent. The onset of respiratory stimulation occurred within 15-30 sec after hCRH infusion was started. Initially, there was an increase in tidal volume (VT), followed by an increase in respiratory rate. The present investigation concerns the issues of the control condition and type of related prime-target relationship operationalization in the lexical-decision paradigm. It is shown that the use of a row of asterisks produces strong inhibitory effects on reaction time to the target relative to a control condition formed with the word “neutro” (“neutral”). The operationalization of prime-target relatedness by means of association of category norms seems equally adequate, although category exemplars do not prime category exemplar targets. Both sets of data are discussed in relation to current research trends using lexical-decision time.

A new system has been developed to study hormone-directed transport in intact plants during parthenocarpic fruit set induced by gibberellins. Gibberellic acid (GA3) and gibberellin A1 (GA1) applied to unpollinated ovaries of pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Alaska) promoted sucrose transport from the leaf to the site of hormone application.
